Are liberals smarter than conservatives?

Slate

It looks that way, according to a study published this week in Nature Neuroscience. In a rapid response test—you press a button if you're given one signal, but not if you're given a different signal—the authors found that conservatives were "more likely to make errors of commission," whereas "stronger liberalism was correlated with greater accuracy." They concluded that "a more conservative orientation is related to greater persistence in a habitual response pattern, despite signals that this response pattern should change."

Does this mean liberal brains are fitter? Apparently. "Liberals are more responsive to informational complexity, ambiguity and novelty," the authors wrote. New York University, which helped fund the study, concluded, "Liberals are more likely than are conservatives to respond to cues signaling the need to change habitual responses." The study's lead author, NYU professor David Amodio, told London's Daily Telegraph that "liberals tended to be more sensitive and responsive to information that might conflict with their habitual way of thinking.".......

New Lieberman Poll Should Serve As Warning To Bush Dogs Everywhere
By: Nicole Belle @ 1:32 PM - PDT According to a recent poll, if given the opportunity now, voters of Connecticut would only too happily show Lieberman the door and handily elect Ned Lamont. David Sirota at OpenLeft explains how Republicans and LieberDems alike should take that as a sign that the general public isn’t buying what they’re trying to sell anymore.

THE VILLAGES, Fla. - Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson gave no opinion Thursday when asked about efforts by President Bush and Congress to keep Terri Schiavo alive, saying he does not remember details of the right-to-die case that stirred national debate.

Thompson was asked in an interview for Bay News 9's "Political Connections" program whether he thought Congress' intervention to save the life of the brain-damaged woman two years ago was appropriate.

The suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a US Air F

Sept. 14-16, 2007 -- UPDATED -- The suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a US Air Force Special Operations Command officer

We live in dangerous times. With fascism comes to inevitability of extra-judicial murders being carried out by the government. The "disappeared" of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia in Henry Kissinger's "Operation Condor" are a bloody testament to extra-judicial killings. And the names Tillman, Westhusing, Kokal, Weiss, and others are now joined by Sergeants Omar Mora and Yance Gray, two authors of an August 18, 2007, New York Times op-ed opposing the Iraq war who were recently killed in a vehicle "accident" in Iraq. Staff Sergeant Jeremy Murphy, another author of the anti-war article, was shot in the head in Iraq while the article was being written. Murphy is recovering from his wounds in a U.S. military hospital.

When the body of Air Force Captain John Frueh was found near his rental car near Badger Peak in northeast Skamania County, Washington on September 8, questions began to be asked. Frueh was assigned to “Operations Weather” for the Air Force Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field in Florida. Hurlburt is the headquarters for the Air Force's special forces activities. Frueh was a veteran of special forces combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. He had flown to Portland, Oregon to attend his best friend's September 2 wedding. Frueh was to have returned to Florida on September 4.

No cause of death was given by the authorities. Frueh had flown to Portland on August 25 to attend his friend's wedding. According to The Oregonian, Frueh had last spoken to his family in Florida on August 30 after renting a car at Portland International Airport. Frueh was 33, married, and a father of two young children.

Republicanists Using Their Politicized Big Government Tools to Fight Against Democracy in America
Voter Roll Purges Ordered for 2008 by DoJ in 10 Key States...

Gonzalez and Schlozman and Griffin may be gone, but the long-term politicization and damage at the DoJ was done and institutionalized long ago. The usual suspects --- Thor Hearne, Hans von Spakovsky, Joe Tanner, et al. --- are still plying their insidious anti-democracy trade with all of the tools of big Republican government at their disposal.

If you Dems think "nothing could possibly go wrong in 2008," you'd better think again. As Steve Rosenfeld at AlterNet reports, the Republicans aren't taking '08 lying down. Not by a long shot.

Earlier this year, the DoJ sent another round of threatening letters to 10 key battleground states, threatening to sue them if they do not purge their voter rolls. Yes, the Republicanists have found a "legal" way to use the DoJ to do the illegal vote-caging work the party and their phony well-funded "grass-roots" used to have to do. No wonder Thor's American Center for Voting Rights was able to go "out of business."

The DoJ is the new ACVR.

"They want more people showing up on Election Day and not finding their names," former DoJ Voting Section attorney David Becker, now of People for the American Way (PFAW), tells Rosenfeld. "They want people not voting."

If you don't haven time to read Rosenfeld's entire in-depth investigative report (which should have been on the front page of the NY Times) here are a few of the key grafs...

Thompson's forgetfulness

"I don't recall" should be the regressives' battle cry!

The suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a US Air F

Why would Frueh driven a long distance from Portland to Washington? Frueh was last seen on August 29 going for a walk in Nob Hill, in northwest Portland. He was carrying in his backpack a camcorder, Global Positioning System (GPS), camera, and cell phone. According to the Portland Police, the last call from Frueh's cell phone was at 12:29 pm on August 29 from the intersection of I-205 and S.E. Mill Plain Road in Vancouver, Washington, ironically, close to a Search and Rescue facility.

There is also the question as to how Frueh traveled to a stop off of the interstate highway in Vancouver, Washington on August 29 if he did not rent his car at Portland International until the next day, August 30, the same day his family in Florida last heard from him by phone. Considering Frueh's last cell phone call was on August 29 from Vancouver, why did he presumably use a pay phone to call his family in Florida?

Frueh's last reported phone call at Portland airport came on the same day, August 30, that five or six nuclear weapons aboard a B-52 supposedly went "missing" during a flight from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. Frueh's position in the headquarters of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command "weather operations" would have given him access to a highly classified information.

Suicide in this case appears highly unlikely. Frueh had recently been selected for Major. He was attending his best friend's wedding and he had a wife and two children.

Police in Washington state immediately ruled out foul play in Frueh's death. A report was floated that he suffered from a "medical condition."

There is something definitely amiss in the U.S. armed forces. George Bush's lickspittle general, David Petreaus, reportedly harbors presidential ambitions. Admiral William Fallon, Petraeus' boss as the Commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) is quoted as saying Petraeus is "an ass-kissing little chickenshit," adding "I hate people like that."

It is noteworthy that Fallon was not asked to testify before Congress about Iraq. Every faltering dictatorship experiences internecine feuds within the military. It was true with Czarist Russia, Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and the Colonels' Greece. It is also true with the United States.

Dershowitz Demands Obama

Dershowitz Demands Obama Fire Brzezinski!
By M.J. Rosenberg | bio
It is almost laughable. Alan Dershowitz, legal gadfly and OJ Simpson lawyer, is demanding that Barack Obama dismiss foreign policy adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, because Brzezinski said something nice about the Walt-Mearsheimer book about the Israel lobby.

Cool. Second degree Mc Carthyism! Obama didn't do anything. Brzezinski didnt do anything. But Walt and Mearsheimer wrote a book the lobby does not like and so Brzezinski must go down for not condemning it. There are two possible explanations for this.

One is that Dershowitz has decided to take it upon himself to corroborate part of the Walt-Mearsheimer thesis i.e. that Dershowitz and other de facto lobbyists see it as their role to squelch any opinion on the Middle East that they don't agree with.

The other is that Dershowitz decided to celebrate the Jewish New Year by simply being Dershowitz and, as is his custom, embarrassing millions of Jews who cringe in disgust every time he publicly mouths his paranoid musings about Jews and anti-Semitism. (I mean, we Jews have Scarlett Johannsen, Shawn Green, Jon Stewart, Natalie Portman, Sara Silverman, Laura Rozen, Ari Berman, Suzanne Goldenberg, Ezra Klein, Matt Yglesias, Max Blumenthal, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Borat, and Josh Marshall. Why do we have to suffer the humiliation of being "represented" by Alan Dershowitz)? Read the story and weep, or laugh. And hope that Obama does not cave....any more than he already did.

PS THOSE INTERESTED in following the daily attempts to muzzle debate on this issue should go to this site and subscribe to their e-mails. I don't agree with all of it but there are enough horror stories about the squelching of debate over the issue that dare not speak its name that it is worth reading.

Disagree, on both counts. Reckon in the beginnin', the financial profiteers' aspect were a powerfully stimulatin' by-product of the overridin' power/sphere of control/influence aspect, but I can see how a body might feel this is a distinction w/o a differnce.

Personally, I think the distinction matters, but it ain't the hill I wanna die on.

The suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a US Air F

UPDATE 9/14/07 -- Captain Frueh was not the only suspicious Air Force death in recent weeks. KXMC-TV in Minot, North Dakota has reported that 20 year old Airman First Class Todd Blue died on September 10 while visiting his family in Wytheville, Virginia. Blue was assigned to the 5th Security Forces at Minot Air Force Base last August. Authorities have not released details on Blue's death. Lt. Col. Paul Wheeless, the commander of the 5th Security Forces Munitions Squadron was fired over the recent "loss" of five or six nuclear-armed cruise missiles loaded at Minot aboard a B-52 destined for Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates ordered a clamp down on any information about the B-52 incident being disseminated to the press. However, what we now know about the nuclear weapons "incident" and two suspicious Air Force deaths within the continental United States, coupled with the feud between General Petraeus and Admiral Fallon, all point to something seriously wrong within the ranks of the military.

Bush signs lobby-ethics bill

Bush signs lobby-ethics bill By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer
40 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush signed a bill Friday that will require lawmakers to disclose more about their efforts to fund pet projects and raise money from lobbyists, a measure that backers call the biggest ethics reform in decades.

The new law will require lawmakers seeking targeted spending projects, or earmarks, to divulge their plans in advance. Lawmakers and political committees must identify lobbyists who raise $15,000 or more for them within a six-month period by bundling campaign donations from many people.

The law, drafted by congressional Democrats in response to lobbying scandals that landed two former lawmakers in prison, will bar House and Senate members from taking gifts from lobbyists or their clients. Former senators and high-ranking executive branch officials will have to wait two years before lobbying Congress; ex-House members will have to wait one year.

Senators and candidates for the White House or Senate will have to pay the full share of their use of private planes. House members and candidates will be barred from accepting trips on private airplanes.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. — who had pushed for the bundling provisions and was one of four lawmakers who participated in a Democratic conference call to reporters — said the measure marks "the most sweeping ethics reform since Watergate."

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- At some point in the near future, worldwide oil production will peak, then decline rapidly, causing depression-like conditions or even the starvation of billions across the globe.

That's the worst-case scenario for subscribers to the "peak oil" theory, who generally believe oil production has either topped out or will do so in the next couple of years.

What follows depends on who one talks to, but predictions run the gamut from the disaster scenario described above to merely oil prices in the $200-a-barrel range while society transitions to other energy sources.

It's not a view held by most industry experts, including the oil companies, the government and most analysts at the financial houses.

Bush extends National Emergency another year

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
September 12, 2007

Notice: Continuation of the National Emergency with Respect to Certain Terrorist Attacks

Consistent with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency I declared on September 14, 2001, in Proclamation 7463, with respect to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, New York, New York, the Pentagon, and aboard United Airlines flight 93, and the continuing and immediate threat of further attacks on the United States.

Because the terrorist threat continues, the national emergency declared on September 14, 2001, last extended on September 5, 2006, and the powers and authorities adopted to deal with that emergency, must continue in effect beyond September 14, 2007. Therefore, I am continuing in effect for an additional year the national emergency I declared on September 14, 2001, with respect to the terrorist threat.

This notice shall be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to the Congress.

A 6-foot-11 center out of Loyola, LaRue Martin entered the NBA with much fanfare in 1972. Unfortunately, he never quite lived up to the hype, spending four seasons on the Portland Trail Blazers’ bench before retiring in 1976.
Martin set the basketball world abuzz when he outplayed Bill Walton in a game between Loyola and UCLA in 1971–72. The Portland Trail Blazers were so impressed that they made Martin the first overall pick in the 1972 NBA Draft.
However, Martin never caught on in the NBA, and after the Blazers drafted Walton in 1974, he never had the chance. In four seasons Martin never scored more than 7.0 points per game, and he never shot better than .452 from the field. He notched both of those numbers during the 1974–75 season, when Walton missed most of the year with injuries.
Martin retired in 1976, one year before the Blazers won their first NBA Championship. In four seasons he tallied 5.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Federal agencies flunk their audits

By MARTHA MENDOZA, AP National Writer

Ten years after Congress ordered federal agencies to have outside auditors review their books, neither the Defense Department nor the newer Department of Homeland Security has met even basic accounting requirements, leaving them vulnerable to waste, fraud and abuse. An Associated Press review shows that the two departments' financial records are so disorganized and inconsistent that they have repeatedly earned "disclaimer" opinions, meaning that they simply cannot be fully audited.

"It means we really can't put any faith in the numbers they use," said Ross Rubenstein, who teaches public administration at Syracuse University's Maxwell School.

The Federal Financial Management Improvement Act of 1996 requires, among other things, that the financial systems of major federal agencies "comply substantially" with generally accepted accounting standards. Each year, those agencies are required to release results of outside audits.

So says Quigo! Oh, this keeps getting better. Poor Michelle Malkin is playing the victim again, but this time she’s fighting back. She’s placing ads against her FOX colleague Geraldo Rivera. He’s been trying to fight the racist—anti-immigration positions that his network is promoting and he finally had enough of Malkin’s routine. He couldn’t have made his feelings any clearer in the Boston Globe and on H&C.

Malkin placed some Google ads against Geraldo and also placed on the FOX Noise website and Quigo. The funny still keeps coming as she received an email telling MM that her content was offensive and the account was blocked.
