I thought XM was buying Sirius?

Sirius Buyout of Rival XM Approved
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has approved the $5 billion buyout of XM Satellite Radio by a rival, Sirius Satellite Radio, saying the deal was unlikely to hurt competition or consumers.

The merger was approved without conditions despite opposition from consumer groups and an intense lobbying campaign by the land-based radio industry.

The combination still requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission, which prohibited a merger when it granted satellite radio operating licenses in 1997.

The Justice Department, in a lengthy statement explaining its decision, said the two companies compete not just with each other but also with other forms of radio and entertainment. Customers must buy equipment that is exclusive to either XM or Sirius, and subscribers rarely switch providers.

“People just don’t do that,” an assistant attorney general, Thomas O. Barnett, said in a conference call with reporters.

The government also appeared to endorse the argument of the companies that they compete with other forms of audio entertainment, including “high-definition” radio, Internet-based radio stations and even devices like Apple’s iPod.

The buyout received shareholder approval in November. The companies said the merger would save hundreds of millions of dollars in operating costs — savings that will ultimately benefit their customers.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/24/business/24radio-web.html?_r=1&ei=5089...

I don't think this will benefit the customers since it is now a monopoly. And you know what happens when there is no competition.

That savings of operating costs will only last so long. And people will be losing jobs because of it.

I give it a 90!

Cause I remember the original when it first came out and how campy the original video was...not quite THIS campy but close - it was just at the birth of MTV.

Cheney says biggest burden carried by Bush

ABC NEWS

An an exclusive interview with ABC News, Vice President Dick Cheney was asked what effect the grim milestone of at least 4,000 U.S. deaths in the five-year Iraq war might have on the nation.

Noting the burden placed on military families, the vice president said the biggest burden is carried by President George W. Bush, who made the decision to commit US troops to war, and reminded the public that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan volunteered for duty.

GOP Gov. Crist of Florida likes women, A LOT, I mean it, stop laughing

For some reason, the Florida press is pushing several stories feeding the notion that Republican Governor Charlie Crist really likes women. Could this have something to do with rumors that the very-single and always-tan Mr. Crist is being considered as a VP choice for John McCain? (There are other rumors too.) There's this, which is embarrassing enough ("chick magnet"? Yeah, right), and then there's this from his dad, regarding his son's "fondness" for women:
"Always! I mean, I can't keep up with him. And they like him, too."

Yeah, they like me a lot too.

Science Meets Metaphysics, interview with Bruce Lipton

...
These amazing systems give us all these characters and life, and then, you have to recognize that every one of those characters and systems is already present in every single cell. Every cell has every system that we have. These cells are miniature people! They’re living an experience in communities with each other that is an exact parallel to what we share. We have such a limited vision that we tend to look at ourselves as individual entities. Yet, we fail to perceive that the real living entity on this planet is an organism called Humanity. We are the cells in the body of that humanity as much as the single cells in my body are living in their community, creating this thing called me.

...

If you're part of the dinosaurs, this is a very dark time for you. But, if you're part of the mammals, this is a very light time for you.

...

Devra: This is really interesting. When we go into this fully, when we finally transcend the dinosaur into this full mammalian thing, what will happen? What will the shift look like?

Dr. Lipton: This is where the meek inherit the earth. The mammals were not actually derived from the dinosaurs; they were derived from the smaller reptiles. Mammals were small, furry and soft. Dinosaurs were these big, giant, scary things. Mammals were meek and they ultimately took over the world. This is what will happen again. This phase into harmony and higher awareness will spread and eventually eliminate most of the health problems we have. Our present health problems are related to disharmony in the system. The more disharmony you have, the more the system starts to die. The more system starts to die, the more the parasites come, making the thing look really scary. But once harmony is brought back into the system, health will return as well. Today the biggest issues of death are not really organic issues. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer and 90% of that is lifestyle. 60% or more of cancer is also considered lifestyle. However, in fact, the biggest leading cause of death is the medical profession.

Major grower ends crop,

Major Northeast Tomato Grower Ends Crop for Lack of Migrant Workers

MICHAEL RUBINKAM
AP News

Mar 24, 2008 16:32 EST

Saying the nation's immigration system is broken, Pennsylvania's largest grower of fresh-to-market tomatoes announced Monday he will no longer produce the crop because he can't find enough workers to harvest it.

Keith Eckel, 61, a fourth-generation farmer and the owner of Fred W. Eckel Sons Farms Inc., said he saw a dramatic decline last summer in the number of migrant workers who showed up to pick tomatoes at his 2,000-acre farm in northeastern Pennsylvania.

He said Congress' failure to approve comprehensive immigration reform had hindered his ability to hire enough workers to get his crop to the market. Most of Eckel's workers came from Mexico.

"There are a number of workers hesitant to travel, legal or illegal, because of the scrutiny they are now under," said Eckel, whose tomatoes have been shipped to supermarkets and restaurants throughout the eastern United States. "So there are less workers crossing state lines."

Eckel, who planted 2.2 million tomato plants last year, said he also will stop growing pumpkins and will plant half as much sweet corn as usual, resulting in a loss of nearly 175 jobs.

Eckel, one of the largest growers of fresh tomatoes in the Northeast, said it cost him $1.5 million to $2 million to plant and harvest a tomato crop — too much of an investment to risk not having enough workers at harvest time.

"The system to provide our labor is broken and the emotion surrounding the immigration issue is standing in the way of those in the political arena moving forward to solve it," Eckel told a news conference at his farm in Clarks Summit.

Hillary would be better than McCain for many reasons. She made all these campaign promises, she has to keep some of them. She would not pick a conservative to serve as a supreme. She'll only be there 4 years at the most.

There will be a great many people complaining if she reneges.

I'm hoping she's not going to win.

A Dying Conservative's Last Words: "Keep Listening to Rush"

RUSH: Kay in Nashville, you're up first on the program today. It's great to have you with us.

CALLER: Rush.

RUSH: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, my dad, he passed away March 15th, at nine o'clock p.m. He was 85 years old and a great conservative. He left me these words on his dying bed. He said, "I love you. I love your family." I have four children. "I love Ronald Reagan, and keep listening to Rush."

RUSH: No. He really said that?

CALLER: So there you go.

RUSH: Your dad --

CALLER: My dad.

RUSH: -- on his dying bed said --

CALLER: Yes.

RUSH: -- "Keep listening to Rush?"

CALLER: Yes. He was a great American and a staunch Republican. He did really well during the Ronald Reagan years financially, and he and I talked about once a week. I live in Nashville. He lived in Charlotte, North Carolina.

RUSH: How old was your dad when he died?

CALLER: 85.

RUSH: Now, you know, this is very humbling to me. I hope you understand, Kay, what I mean. These kinds of things when people say them to me, I'm really as close to speechless as I get -- other than to say I'm grateful that you called and you got through to be able to tell me this. But one of the things that I've always noticed, when I talk to elderly people -- I ran into a couple recently on the golf course. They're in their eighties, and they care as much about the future of the country now as they did when they were younger, and I've often marveled as that, because I would think when you get to be a certain age and know that you've got many fewer years ahead of you than you have behind you, that you might just take a break from it and say, "Why should I care about this? I'm not going to be around to see if any of this happens," but then the reality sets in: They've got kids, and they are true patriots, and they do care about the future of the country long beyond their time as citizens in this country.

That is irreplaceable. That is the kind of thing that keeps this country going, that people care about it and have great concern beyond their own time on earth as Americans

He said only after his complete disaster would bigoted fascist corporatist be revealed to the public. If people haven't figured it out yet about how a Southern Strategy works. If people continue to support torture and the deresolution of our civil rights. If people continue to remain quiet as we invade and occupy while our real enemies go free. If people continue to do this from their leveraged McMansions, then they have not learned even yet.

There is an argument to be said that even overturning all Supreme Court justices to the right is not too high a price to pay for the education of those idiots. I'm not worried about me or my family. We have it made.

I'm down to not voting that way for people like you and the other bloggers, you know this. The folks on this blog really do give me hope for America.

Green Zone shelling mirrors

Green Zone shelling mirrors militia ire By HAMZA HENDAWI and QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writers
Mon Mar 24, 5:33 PM ET

BAGHDAD - Rocket attacks on the U.S.-protected Green Zone may carry a message with implications across Iraq: rising anger within the Mahdi Army militia.

The Shiite fighters led by anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr are reorganizing their ranks, taking delivery of new weapons from Iran and ramping up complaints about crackdowns by U.S. and Iraqi forces that could unravel the Mahdi Army's self-declared cease-fire, according to militia commanders.

U.S. commanders credit the 7-month-old cease-fire for helping curb violence in Baghdad and slow the pace of U.S. military deaths, which reached 4,000 on Sunday. Washington also is highly concerned over any signs of expanding links between Iran and rank-and-file al-Sadr supporters before local elections this year.

The latest rumblings in the Mahdi Army are provoked by the belief that the Americans and their Iraqi allies abused the cease-fire by conducting raids that have targeted hundreds of al-Sadr's backers and aides.

Militia commanders told The Associated Press they viewed the arrests as a move by Shiite rivals to deny them a prominent political voice. They also cited al-Sadr's statement this month that his cease-fire did not preclude his followers from self defense.

Wall Street May Cut 20, 000

Wall Street May Cut 20, 000 Jobs Over 2 Years: Report
By REUTERS
Filed at 5:37 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City risks losing more than 20,000 jobs in the high-paying financial sector over the next two years as the crisis in mortgage markets drives down Wall Street's profits, according to a report issued on Monday.

The city's Independent Budget Office, in its report, estimated that Wall Street's profits for 2007 will sink by more than 80 percent to the lowest level since 1994.

Profits for 2007 are expected to total just $3.2 billion, down from $20.9 billion in 2006, the report said.

Banks and brokerages account for almost 35 percent of all salaries and wages in New York City. Fallout from investments in the risky subprime mortgage market has forced Wall Street banks to write-down more than $150 billion -- and more red ink is expected.

"The economic situation is particularly precarious. If the problems affecting Wall Street and housing worsen, the recession will be deeper and the fiscal pressures on the city will quickly mount," said Ronnie Lowenstein, director of the Independent Budget Office.

Lowenstein said the projections do not include any impact from the buyout of Bear Stearns & Co Inc by JPMorgan Chase. JPMorgan agreed to buy Bear, which until recently had been the fifth-biggest Wall Street investment bank, after Bear collapsed 10 days ago because large subprime losses and failing confidence in the firm prompted a run on the bank.

Wall Street's profits in 2008, however, are expected to double to $6.6 billion and rise again in 2009 to $12.2 billion, the agency said.

Things happen that are unexpected. You think you are in a good position and shit happens.

But other than that, it isn't the time, yet, to play around with voting. We need to get a third party strong enough to take on the Repubs and Dems. And that starts locally.

I'm voting some Greens in. A few in my group are running for local and county offices, and one is running for State office.

Mondale issues blistering attack on Cheney

Former Vice President Walter Mondale's presentation at the Humphrey Institute on the vice presidency

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Former Vice President Walter Mondale today accused the current vice president, Dick Cheney, of a wholesale assault on the Constitution, the balance of powers, and the system that evolved since World War II to coordinate intelligence and defense policy.

"They wrecked that system," Mondale said this morning at a University of Minnesota scholarly conference on the vice presidency.

This isn't some academic difference of opinion over the proper balance between branches of the federal government, Mondale said, during a question and answer session after his prepared remarks:

"I think this was a brutal, deliberate policy to ignore a wide range of written laws and constitutional principles and the legitimate powers of Congress…It's different than anything we've seen in American history and I think it ought to be seen not as two responsible positions, but ought to be seen as a dramatic challenge to American's system of government."

Peru Tribe Battles Oil Giant Over Pollution

It is a familiar story. Big business moves into a pristine wilderness and starts destroying the environment and by turn the livelihoods of the indigenous people who live there.0324 04 1

But in a reversal of plot, there are now cases of people living traditional lifestyles who are now invading the territory of the big companies and taking them on at their own game.

The story of the Achuar tribe living in the Amazon rainforest of north-eastern Peru is one of them.

Last year, they filed a class action lawsuit against oil giant Occidental Petroleum, in Los Angeles.

Now they are awaiting a judge’s decision on whether the case can proceed in the US or will be sent back to Peru, where it stands little chance of coming to cour

McCain: Osama bin Laden and

McCain: Osama bin Laden and I agree on Iraq
David Edwards and Mike Sheehan

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told supporters at a town hall meeting that he, top US commander in Iraq Gen. David Petraeus, and terror mastermind Osama bin Laden all agree about the Iraq war.

"As you probably know, an audiotape ... was released where bin Laden said, and I have to quote bin Laden: 'The nearest field of jihad today to support our people in Palestine ... is the Iraqi field.' He urged Palestinians and people of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to 'help in support of their mujahideen brothers in Iraq which is the greatest opportunity and the biggest task.'"

McCain followed that with, "For the first time, I have seen Osama bin Laden and Gen. Petraeus in agreement, and that is, the central battleground in the battle against al-Qaeda is in Iraq today! That's what bin Laden is saying, and that's what Gen. Petraeus is saying, and that's what I'm saying, my friends."

The Arizona senator took a swipe at his fall election rivals using a condescending political slur often employed by President George W. Bush: "My Democrat [sic] opponents, who want to pull out of Iraq, refuse to understand what's being said and what's happening, and that is, the central battleground is Iraq in this struggle against radical Islamic extremism. And my friends, we're succeeding."

Stand with Tibet

The Chinese government isn't used to listening to the international community. But, the summer Olympics will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to shine the spotlight on abuses committed by the Chinese government.

Japanese protest against US base

Residents of Okinawa have gathered to protest against the US military presence on the southern Japanese island, following a series of incidents allegedly involving US personnel, including the rape of a schoolgirl.
Thousands of people attended Sunday's demonstration, despite pouring rain, though the numbers were less than the 10,000 hoped for.
Sunday's protest was one of the largest demonstrations against the US military in Okinawa since 1995, when three US servicemen were accused of gang-raping a 12-year-old, sparking efforts to reduce the number of Americans stationed on the island.
"Crimes and accidents due to the bases have happened over and over," the Japanese Kyodo news agency quoted Mitsuko Tomon, the Okinawa city mayor, as saying in his address to protesters.

Cloned Meat Should Be Labeled

For years, the FDA has asked major cattle cloning companies to keep their products off the market. For years, they've ignored. One Kansas farmer has already come forward and admitted to openly selling semen from prize-winning clones to U.S. meat producers, while another cattleman says that, "This is a fairy tale that this technology is not being used and is not already in the food chain." This is unacceptable.

Tell Congress: Cloned animal products should be clearly labeled.

One more.......Liquid Coal is not the Answer

There's a dirty idea gaining ground on Capitol Hill right now. It has to do with new energy legislation in Congress that could include liquid coal, which is about as energy efficient and practical as it sounds. Think of it as turning a hybrid into a Hummer.

Congress needs to know that liquid coal is not the answer. Tell your Representative today that what we need are real solutions to global warming like more efficient cars and clean, renewable energy, not legislation driven by special interests like the coal industry.
