How does one define "unemployed?"

One in ten Ohioans are on food stamps right now. According to researchers, it is the highest amount in Ohio's history. My guess is that they have similar findings in Michigan and other decimated areas.
....Yet the unemployment rate is almost 5%. Does 5% account for the undocumented workers and the people who work only part time for five hours weekly so they qualify for welfare?
Does 5% account for the 21 countries that were recently ranked as BETTER than the United States?

Some Folks pronounced McCain DOA!

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 — Jubilant Democrats took the gavels in the Senate and House today for the first time in 12 years, pledging a new era in Congress and a new effort at bipartisan progress.

I will talk after I contact Obama's office....

I am bored and tired of just hearing self vainglorious statements based on individuals bias. I thought a few here at least knew honour amongst friends (Ha!) regarding a good debate or a "real" chess game.

But I am not here to have pedestrian twits throw droll slurs at me. I am Not here for your vitriol. You said negative things regarding Clinton and only praised LIAR Obama. They both are horrid and that again your stupid masses are voting for THE WORSE, which was Obama...but now Hillary is following COAL and LIQUID COAL development, perhaps if every The Sheeple gets bold enough to Baaa as they go to to warn others slaughter ... Tsk Tsk

I want Gore or NO ONE. I give. You are right. I will not vote for either of the LIARS you are giving me. All I am given that all here has allowed -- like Reagan and NADER and voting AGAINST CARTER, thinking LIKE NOW voting for Obama, you were HIP. Tsk Tsk.

Happy Birthday Israel

Company is Coming Carrying UN Flags!

...
“In 1948 the mechanism of denial and ethnic cleansing as an IDEOLOGY, not a policy but a formula began. When Zionism began in the 19th century it was meant to be a safe haven for Jews and to help redefine Judaism as a national movement, not just a religion. Nothing wrong with either of those goals! But by the late 19th Century it was decided the only way these goals could be achieved was by ridding the indigenous population and it became an evil ideology.

“Israeli Jewish life will never be simple, good, or worth living while this ideology of domination, exclusiveness and superiority is allowed to continue. The mind set today is that unless Israel is an exclusive Jewish State, Palestinians will continue to be obstacles. However, there has always been a small vocal minority challenging this.

“The only thing that can save Palestinians is for the world to say “ENOUGH is ENOUGH!” The way to challenge and change the ethnic cleansing is to pursue true democracy and the use of sanctions and divestment, for money talks.”

Since 1948, USA taxpayers have provided over 100 Billion dollars to Israel, which is not a democracy, but an ETHNOCRACY!

Jeff Halper, Founder and Coordinator of ICAHD/Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and a Noble Peace Prize Nominee for 2006 argued, “Israel is a not a democracy but is an Ethnocracy, meaning a country run and controlled by a national group with some democratic elements but set up with Jews in control and structured to keep them in control.”1

In 1973, Ariel Sharon told Winston Churchill III, “We’ll make a pastrami sandwich of them. We’ll insert a strip of Jewish settlement, in between the Palestinians, then another strip of Jewish settlement, right across the West Bank, so that in 25 years time, neither the United Nations, nor the United States, nobody, will be able to tear it apart.”

But all things are possible and miracles do occur; and one man’s dream can change everything.

Medical and empirical evidence indicates that we are becoming energetically weak, intellectually impaired and chronically ill from insidious RF waves we can neither see, touch, smell nor taste. Clueless Americans who allow themselves to be implanted with identification and tracking chips will suffer most grievously. Millions, already physically and emotionally addicted to microwave-spewing cell phones, laptops, personal data gadgets and entertainment devices which they cuddle to their brains and bodies, will have little moral or philosophical aversion to being chipped. But for the more discriminating, we are reviewing here crucial research data, which, if taken seriously, may save lives and stiffen resolve to reject the fascist subdermal tracking system-no matter what the cost.

Some Bay Area Democrats May Oppose Iraq Attack
Barbara Lee is Finding Support for Opposition to Military Action
by Edward Epstein, Chronicle Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — Rep. Barbara Lee of Oakland stood alone last September, casting the only "no" vote when the House gave President Bush backing for the war against terrorists. But now several of her Bay Area Democratic colleagues say they'll join her stance if Bush seeks a resolution authorizing military action against Iraq.

"Barbara Lee had it right," said Rep. Pete Stark, D-Fremont, a 15-term congressman who voted with the president last September. "I'm sorry I voted for the resolution."

Woolsey said constituents' communications with her office were running about 200 to 1 against attacking Iraq.

Stark will get a chance to express that feeling on the floor of the House because the White House said again Tuesday that it planned to seek a congressional resolution supporting the president's tough line toward Iraq, although Bush hasn't yet said exactly how he intends to bring down Saddam Hussein.

Many Democrats say they don't want a vote before November, fearing that Bush wants to turn Iraq into a campaign issue, but Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Tuesday he expected a vote well before the election.

Stark, who voted against the 1991 resolution that authorized Bush's father to use military force to oust Iraqi forces from Kuwait, said the current president had twisted last September's resolution beyond its intent to find the perpetrators of the terror attacks.

"Something has to change," Stark added. "You've got some dots to connect to show that Iraq poses an imminent danger to us."

In 1991, the House voted 250-183 to back the elder Bush in the Persian Gulf War. Seven of the nine members in the Bay Area's House delegation at the time, all but one of them Democrats, voted against the measure.

The views of the current 11-member local delegation again show the Bay Area marches to a different drummer. Observers expect both houses of Congress to back Bush on Iraq.

Polls in California and nationally also show that a majority of Americans would support military action to oust Hussein, although they want Bush to form an international coalition to support an attack and would like to see U.N. action first.

South Bay first-term Rep. Mike Honda, D-San Jose, said he needed to see much more convincing evidence that Hussein plans an attack against America before he would vote for military action. "I wouldn't vote to support it without more debate," he said.

Honda said he would reconsider if Bush presented clear evidence, much as President John F. Kennedy did in 1962 when he showed that the Soviet Union was placing nuclear-tipped missiles in Cuba. "That's the same expectation that members of Congress have today," he said.

Lee said that she viewed a potential war with Iraq as an unprecedented action in U.S. history.

WAR TALK 'MORALLY WRONG'

"Any talk of war I personally feel is morally wrong, and a military strike should not be authorized by Congress," she said.

"I don't believe ever in our history have we executed a pre-emptive strike on a country where no one has seen the evidence on what the threat is," Lee said recently.

Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Marin, said, "I would vote no. I don't believe our world, our nation, our communities or we as individuals will be safer by going to war against Iraq."

Woolsey said constituents' communications with her office were running about 200 to 1 against attacking Iraq.

Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, who like Stark voted in favor of last September's resolution but against the 1991 measure, wouldn't say how he intended to vote this time.

But he hopes the president will give the U.N. time to put its new inspection program into place.

Among other Democratic members, Reps. Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, Zoe Lofgren of San Jose, Anna Eshoo of Atherton and Mike Thompson of Napa have all expressed reservations about military action.

Pelosi, the House minority whip and the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, "is willing to listen to the president," said spokesman Brendan Daly. But she has asked about how imminent the Iraqi threat from weapons of mass destruction actually is and is worried about how long the United States would have to occupy Iraq if Hussein is overthrown.

Pelosi voted against the 1991 resolution.

Thompson said Bush should allow his "saber rattling" to work. "If this saber rattling allows him to get Saddam to open the country to weapons inspectors, it's all for the best," he said. "War should be our very last option."

LANTOS, TAUSCHER MOST HAWKISH

Of the Bay Area's 11 Democratic House members, Reps. Tom Lantos of San Mateo and Ellen Tauscher of Walnut Creek, are the most hawkish on unseating Hussein. Lantos voted for the 1991 resolution.

Tauscher said she was unhappy that Bush might be pushing the U.N. too fast and thought a pre-election vote would be wrong, but Hussein must be forced out.

"Saddam Hussein . . . is irresponsible, with a voracious appetite for weapons of mass destruction and the willingness to use them," she said.

In the Senate, California Democrats Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, who as Marin's congresswoman in 1991 voted against the Gulf War resolution, have both pressed Bush for more information about a possible attack but haven't taken a position on a possible resolution.

Many Dems Reject War Resolution

A majority of House Democrats on Thursday rejected President Bush's request for blank-check authority to wage war with Iraq, despite the fact that House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt, D-Missouri, helped draft the resolution and lobbied for its passage.

As expected, the resolution authorizing Bush to order the invasion of Iraq – without a Congressional declaration of war -- passed the House and Senate easily in votes late Thursday and early Friday. The Senate approved the resolution by a lopsided 77-23 vote; the House by a somewhat narrower 296-133 margin.

The surprise came in the size of the vote against the resolution. Just weeks ago, when foes of the administration canvassed the House to determine the size of the opposition bloc, they counted just a few dozen firm votes against the administration's proposal.

Even as Thursday's vote approached, an "alternative to war" resolution proposed by US Rep. Barbara Lee, D-California, attracted just 39 co-sponsors. The relatively small number of caucus members who had expressed explicit opposition to the resolution before the vote led Gephardt aides to suggest that the minority leader's outspoken support for the Bush administration's hard-line position – a stance that made opposing the president's request more difficult – would be vindicated as a clear majority of House Democrats would join the Republican majority to back the resolution.

But Gephardt, a man whose presidential ambitions are no secret, was not vindicated.

Of 207 House Democrats voting on the resolution, 126 opposed it, while only 81 voted for the measure. "I hope the story today won't be (that) this is a huge, overwhelming victory for the president of the United States and for war, beacuse it is not," said Illinois Democrat Jan Schakowsky, who was one of the first to break with Gephardt on the issue. "I think what we did will surprise some people. This (the larger-than-expected vote against the resolution) is against conventional wisdom that 'oh, everybody's going to be with the president.'"

The 126 Democrats who opposed the resolution were joined by one independent member, Vermont's Bernie Sanders, and six Republicans -- John Duncan of Tennessee; John Hostettler of Indiana; Amo Houghton of New York; Jim Leach of Iowa; Connie Morella of Maryland; and Ron Paul of Texas.

The House Democrats who opposed the White House and their own caucus leader included Minority Whip Nancy Pelosi, D-California, who is also the ranking Democratic member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, John Conyers, D-Michigan; the ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, David Obey, D-Wisconsin; the ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee, Charles Rangel, D-New York; and International Relations Committee members Donald Payne, D-New Jersey; Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Cynthia McKinney, D-Georgia; Earl Hilliard, D-Alabama; Bill Delahunt, D-Massachusetts; Gregory Meeks, D-New York; Barbara Lee, D-California; Earl Blumenauer, D-Oregon; Grace Napolitano, D-California; and Diane Watson, D-California. They were joined by senior Democratic members such as George Miller, D-California, and James Oberstar, D-Minnesota, who told the House: "Our Constitution entrusts to Congress alone the power to declare war, a power we should invoke with great care on evidence of a clear and present danger to our country. President Bush has asked Congress to cede that power to him, to be wielded against Iraq; at a time of his choosing; with or without United Nations support; in a unilateral, pre-emptive strike, on his own determination of the level of threat Iraq poses to our national security. I will not surrender our constitutional authority."

Pelosi, the number two Democrat in the House, was equally outspoken in her opposition to the resolution. Rejecting the argument that the president needed maximum flexibility to act quickly against an immediate threat, Pelosi noted that Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet had told Congress that the likelihood of Iraq's Saddam Hussein launching an attack on the U.S. using weapons of mass destruction is low. "This is not about time," she said. "This is about the Constitution. It is about this Congress asserting its right to declare war when we are fully aware what the challenges are to us. It is about respecting the United Nations and a multilateral approach, which is safer for our troops."

Pelosi joined 70 Democrats, Vermont Independent Sanders and Maryland Republican Morella in backing Barbara Lee's amendment, which spelled out explicit support for the principle that: "the United States should work through the United Nations to seek to resolve the matter of ensuring that Iraq is not developing weapons of mass destruction, through mechanisms such as the resumption of weapons inspections, negotiation, enquiry, mediation, regional arrangements, and other peaceful means." Lee's bill was co-sponsored by 18 Congressional Black Caucus members, former House Minority Whip David Bonior, D-Michigan, and Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Dennis Kucinich.

"It is fear which leads us to war," Kucinich told the House. "It is fear which leads us to believe that we must kill or be killed. Fear which leads us to attack those who have not attacked us. Fear which leads us to ring our nation in the very heavens with weapons of mass destruction."

Another fear – that of the Bush political team's determination to make Iraq an election issue for members who oppose the administration – was described by several members as a factor in the timing of the vote and the willingness of House leaders to concede so much of their authority to the president. Rangel went so far as to describe the whole debate as "a diversion that we have been forced to place on the front burner."

Intriguingly, for all the fears of some Democrats that a "no" vote might be politically risky, at least two of the Republicans who voted with the majority of Democrats in opposition to the resolution face difficult reelection fights this fall. Iowa's Leach and Maryland's Morella are among the most endangered Republican incumbents in the country – the former from a midwestern district with vast stretches of farmland, the latter from a Washington suburb. Yet, both broke with the administration to oppose what Leach described as a "resolution (that) misfits the times and the circumstances."

"As powerful a case for concern as the preparatory clauses of this resolution outline," explained Leach, "they do not justify authorization for war, particularly absent further Security Council and multinational support."

In the Senate, one Republican -- Rhode Island's Lincoln Chafee -- voted against the resolution. He joined 21 Democrats and Vermont Independent Jim Jeffords in voting "no." The Senate foes were led by West Virginia's Robert Byrd and Massachusetts' Edward Kennedy, the chamber's senior Democratic members. They were joined by Armed Services Committee chair Carl Levin, D-Michigan; Intelligence Committee chair Bob Graham, D-Florida; and Judiciary Committee chair Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont.

Among those voting for the resolution were prospective 2004 Democratic presidential candidates Joe Lieberman, D-Connecticut; John Edwards, D-North Carolina; and John Kerry, D-Massachusetts.

Among senators seeking reelection this year, the only vulnerable incumbent to oppose the resolution was Minnesota's Paul Wellstone.

"A pre-emptive go-it-alone strategy towards Iraq is wrong. I oppose it," said Wellstone. "We should act forcefully, resolutely, sensibly with our allies, and not alone, to disarm Saddam. Authorizing the pre-emptive, go-it-alone use of force now, right in the midst of continuing efforts to enlist the world community to back a tough new disarmament resolution on Iraq, could be a costly mistake for our country."

Hypocrit is soo right, after watching Bush's War last night...

Torture Architect John Yoo Hypocritically Blasts Democratic Party For Violating Constitution’s Intent

In today’s Wall Street Journal, former Justice Department official John Yoo blasts the Democratic party for its “undemocratic” system of superdelegates:

This delegate dissonance wasn’t anything the Framers of the U.S. Constitution dreamed up. They believed that letting Congress choose the president was a dreadful idea. Without direct election by the people, the Framers said that the executive would lose its independence and vigor and become a mere servant of the legislature. They had the record of revolutionary America to go on. All but one of America’s first state constitutions gave state assemblies the power to choose the governor. James Madison commented that this structure allowed legislatures to turn governors into “little more than ciphers.”

Since when did Yoo become so concerned with the Constitution? During his time in the administration, he aggressively urged the administration to push moral, ethical, and legal boundaries:

– Yoo was the author of the administration’s infamous torture memo, which argued that interrogation techniques only constituted torture if they are “equivalent in intensity to…organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death.” [Link, Link]

–Thanks to Yoo’s legal work, the Bush administration justified the creation of a new category of detainees: “illegal enemy combatants.” He advised that President Bush did not have to comply with the Geneva Conventions in handling detainees in the war on terror. [Link]

– Yoo argued that President Bush “didn’t need to ask Congress for permission to invade Iraq.” The 1973 War Powers Resolution, according to Yoo, is “irrelevant.” [Link]

– Yoo helped craft the legal justification allowing the Bush administration to secretly eavesdrop on Americans without court-approved warrants. In 2001, Yoo brushed aside constitutional concerns, stating that after 9/11, “the government may be justified in taking measures which in less troubled conditions could be seen as infringements of individual liberties.”[Link]

Additionally, despite what Yoo claims, the Founders never envisioned “direct election by the people.” In fact, during the Constitutional Convention, “a plan to have the president elected directly by the people was defeated twice.”

I'm Irish..I fall down all the time and I don't get a black eye

yeah, that looked more like a punched eye 8-)

He's not going to last if he doesn't start throwing strikes

50 pitches in the second inning. Well at least they have a really good Japanese reliever to come in later. Okajima is the shit.

“Sinbad you get to the

“Sinbad you get to the left flank now” barked Hillary
on that raw gray morning in Bosnia. “I know you’re
scared well I’m scared too but we have a squad of Army
Rangers pinned down by that damn Serbian sniper
fire and we are their only hope. Crow you drive
I’ll handle the 50 cal. machine guns and Chelsea I need
you to call in some air support and drop some mortar
rounds to help keep their heads down.”

“I am all over it mom.” said Chelsea as the first
“whoomp” of the mortar tube sounded, as it sent it’s
deadly projectile skyward.

Sheryl Crow gunned the motor of the Humvee
as the rifle fire cracked and Hillary w/ a big
cigar in her mouth laughed as she turned the
50 cal. machine gun towards the tree line where
the snipers were and sent hot lead streaming across
the valley. Crow started to sing to calm her
nerves ..... “I’m gonna soak up your guns and make
everything all right / got my 45 pistol strapped on /
so I’m ready to rock on ...” The Humvee tore
up that muddy mountain road toward the trapped
Americans.

Although no press was there one report had a G.I.
crying and yelling, “Bill sent Team Hillary to save
us. God Bless America and God Bless Hillary too.”
His fellow Rangers started chanting, "U.S.A., U.S.A."

Warcraft?

My grandson plays Warcraft. He's even made his own games there. In fact he drew some characters to make his own game.

They aren't posting the speed of the pitches?

I don't know if ESPN ever does. Local broadcasts do it all the time. But I don't see why they aren't doing it tonight.

It's over if he doesn't get this guy.

Budding Talent ToniD

That reminds me of guys I went to school with. We played D&D and they would all illustrate our characters. They are all professional illustrators now. Comic books and stuff. I was a film major so no real talent myself. But that's exactly where they started. I really like the second one.

Some Good pitches there !

Now..That was some major league quality pitches..

He is pretty good.

He drew those when he was 12.

When he was 3 he loved dinosaurs, so I used to draw them for him. He used to watch me draw and started early with crayons trying to draw the dinosaurs. He does have a talent for writing also. Hope he uses these talents.

McCain silent on reaching

McCain silent on reaching 4,000 U.S. deaths in Iraq.
With the deaths of four more soldiers last night, the U.S. military reached the grim marker of 4,000 soldier fatalities in Iraq. Both Sens. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) released statements recognizing the soldiers for their sacrifice and mourning their families’ loss. One campaign, however, has been silent:

One note — John McCain’s office has issued a statement today about elections in Taiwan but nothing about the 4,000.

On his campaign website, McCain calls for “a greater military commitment” and says “more troops are necessary.”

another casualty in the senseless insane war in iraq

(CNN) -- NASA sent conflicting signals Monday evening about what an official told CNN is a planned $4 million budget cut in NASA's Mars Exploration Rover program.

Initially the Rover program's principle investigator, Steve Squyres, said one of two vehicles operating on the planet will be suspended because of the cut. He said he learned he would have to trim $4 million from the program's $20 million budget.

He said the move would probably force the rover Spirit into hibernation.

But, he said, the rover could be reactivated if funding is later restored. Squyres also said the cuts would mean layoffs among a staff of 300 scientists who operate and analyze the rovers.

But shortly after CNN.com published the story, NASA administrator Michael Griffin said the agency will not shut down one of the two Mars rovers, according to spokesman Bob Jacobs.

Something tells me that even the Bear Stearns people won't have to get stuck with such limited options. Considering the damage they caused (and will continue to cause thanks to their poor business practices) they ought to be subjected to much worse. Of course they won't because their Republicans friends who helped set up this lousy mess will find new ways to coddle the bastards. Probably they will do it with your tax dollars just before telling you how they cut taxes. Too bad the US as a country will one day be begging for "payday loans." Oh the glorious so-called free market economy. Only someone stupid enough to fall for WMD in Iraq and Mission Accomplished will fall for Republican economics. Not very reassuring, is it?

"Payday loans"

one more example of how neocons can take something like loan sharking and make it "respectable". here in cincy, the biggest one is owned by the individuals that formerly owned a bank bought by national city.

because of the way these advances are structured they get away with charging obscene interest rates. they rely on you having to roll it over repeatedly, which is really a pretty safe bet, because once you draw upon future earnings on a fixed or low income you never catch up.

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- Reason No. 1: "Most Americans have yet to feel any of the costs of the Iraq war," write Nobel economist Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes in an excerpt of their new book, "The Three Trillion Dollar War," in Vanity Fair. "The price in blood has been paid by members of the volunteer military. The price in treasure has been financed entirely by borrowing. Taxes have not been raised to pay for the war."

Well, folks, the party's over. Campaign rhetoric won't hide America's excesses, denial, incompetence and arrogance much longer. No matter who's elected, taxes will increase to cover massive debts. Greed has driven America's great economic engine into a "debt contagion" ditch with a recession, bear market, price inflation, and weak job

does anyone know what has gotten into Paul Krugman? This morning I read that he says that the occupation in Iraq is not responsible for our economic woes....he says war is generally good for the economy. I also don't understand his disdain of Barack Obama. I used to eat up everything he said...now I have to wonder. Has he changed or have I....

he drew some characters to make his own game.

the Krug...

I dont know...he is usually so spot on, but he has been really screwy lately.
I cant imagine that he believes that war is good for the economy in a country where we make nothing! It was one thing when American business' had access to government contracts. Now its all subsidiaries of Halliburton. Maybe they would hire Americans. but with their move to Dubai and general offshoring of much of the actual work, I don't see how this benefits unions or goods producers.

misspoke? misstatement?

misspoke or misstatement isn't listed in my thesaurus for "lied" or "lie":

Saying she made a rare error, Hillary Clinton repeated Tuesday that she “misspoke” when she suggested she landed under sniper fire during a goodwill trip to Bosnia in March 1996.

Speaking to KDKA radio in Pittsburgh, the Democratic presidential candidate said it’s been a long campaign and this is the first time she has said the wrong thing.

“I have written about this and described in many different settings and I did misspeak the other day,” Clinton said during a live 10-minute interview. “This has been a very long campaign. … Last week for the first time in 12 years or so, I misspoke.”

The New York senator has had to backtrack about her description of her trip to the Balkans when she was first lady after a fact check revealed that, rather than dodging hostile fire, she was greeted on the tarmac at Tuzla Air Base by an 8-year-old child and Bosnia’s acting president.

Clinton’s faulty memory was also corrected by the comedian Sinbad, who joined her on the trip and told The Washington Post he doesn’t remember any threats to their safety.

During a speech last Monday on Iraq, Clinton said of the trip: “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”

“The military took great care of us,” Clinton said Tuesday. “They were worried about taking a first lady to a war zone and took some extra precautions.”

She's also made the same claim in writing in her book.

bragging rights? payback for what they did to clinton? you make a good point, but sitting on their collective hands because they can't get a 100% victory doesn't make sense either.

the real point i was trying to make is that starting in 2009 everything that is wrong that had nothing to do with the dems is still going to be blamed on the dems. in fact i guarrantee the loudest blamers will be the likes of bush and cheney.

just like the common man can be held accountable for a crime many years after the fact, bush and cheney should be held accountable.

So much for every vote counts

Mark Tomasik: Don't discount Gore-led ticket

U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney, whose district includes much of Martin and St. Lucie counties, is hoping he wont have to attend the Democratic Party national convention in Denver in August.

If he does go, that will mean the Democrats still havent decided a nominee for the presidential election. And if neither Sen. Hillary Clinton nor Sen. Barack Obama has clinched the nomination by August, Mahoney says we may see a brokered convention, meaning the nominee could emerge from a negotiated settlement.

If it (the nomination process) goes into the convention, dont be surprised if someone different is at the top of the ticket, Mahoney said.

A compromise candidate could be someone such as former vice president Al Gore, Mahoney said last week during a meeting with this news organizations editorial board.

If either Clinton or Obama suggested to a deadlocked convention a ticket of Gore-Clinton or Gore-Obama, the Democratic Party would accept it, Mahoney said.

Mahoney, who is one of the superdelegates who gets to cast a vote at the convention, hasnt endorsed a candidate. He said he doesnt intend to endorse anyone because I dont see it as my job as a district representative to endorse a nominee for the presidential race.

If neither Clinton nor Obama has enough delegates to secure the nomination by the time the convention starts Aug. 25, Mahoney will have to cast a superdelegate vote for someone. Superdelegates make up about one-fifth of the total number of delegates to the convention and are free to support any candidate for nomination. Most superdelegates are current or former elected officeholders or party officials.

As an uncommitted superdelegate, Mahoney said he has been wooed by Clinton and Obama for an endorsement. Clinton has been the more aggressive solicitor, Mahoney said.

Mahoney said he has met twice with Obama. He has met more often with Clinton. Two weeks ago, Mahoney attended a cocktail party at Clintons house in Washington, D.C., he said. Mahoney told of how impressed he is by Clintons commitment to helping people and her human touch. When Clinton learned that Mahoneys daughter is interested in horses, she called the girl to encourage her interest, Mahoney said.

While Mahoney hasnt committed to either contender, he clearly likes Clinton and her stance on issues. He praised her for having a grasp of matters of importance to Floridians, especially homeowners insurance reform. (He also made the point that Sen. John McCain, the apparent Republican presidential nominee, is the only candidate in either party not to support national reform of homeowners insurance.)

Mahoney described Clinton as being incredibly bright, very personable and having an unbelievable grasp of policy during his meetings with her.

Mahoney said he had intended to skip the convention because I have better things to do in my district than attend what recently has become a glorified pep rally. He will stay away if his superdelegate vote isnt needed. Meanwhile, hes lobbying to get the results of the Jan. 29 Florida primary vote to count.

The national Democratic Party and its chairman, Howard Dean, stripped Florida of its delegates as punishment for violating party rules by moving up the states primary date from March to Jan. 29. Dean banned the Democratic candidates from campaigning in Florida. Still, a record 1.75 million Democrats voted in the Florida primary. Clinton won by 17 percentage points.

A recent statewide poll of registered Democratic voters by the St. Petersburg Times and its television partner showed that the campaigning boycott of Florida had little effect on Democratic voters choices in the Jan. 29 primary. The poll showed that 56 percent said the lack of campaigning had no effect at all on their vote. Also, 77 percent of the people polled said that it is very important to them that the results of the Jan. 29 primary count.

Mirroring our editorial boards position and the poll results, Mahoney said the Jan. 29 results should be counted and the full slate of delegates should be seated at the convention.

The delegates have to be treated fairly and responsibly and given full weight, Mahoney said.

The St. Petersburg Times poll showed that one in four state Democrats might not vote for the partys nominee if Florida delegates arent given a full say in the presidential nomination. That would seem to indicate that all Florida Democratic candidates for office in November could be in jeopardy of losing support.

Mahoney dismisses this notion, saying the issues are too important for Democratic voters to either sit out the election or vote Republican. Democrats need to first clean up the mess they made in Florida and honor the votes of the Jan. 29 primary before they try to convince voters they successfully can govern the nation.

tweety was in love watching her this morning!!

Perhaps feeling threatened by the hotness of Bill Richardson's beard, Obama Girl is back with a brand-new video wherein she once again declares herself Barack Obama's most devoted fan wearing the least clothes. In this installment, O-Girl pleads with Hillary Clinton to stop the negative campaigning (because it is so totally all her) and join her and Obama in uniting the party.* Funnier moments: Table-dancing before Hillary in the diner where the Clintons shot that Sopranos spoof; comforting her in that infamous tear-up moment; importing Bill Clinton for a musical cameo; dancing with Obama on Ellen; being in a bikini, a pair of shortie-shorts and a negligee. Also, fairly wicked lyrics invoking powerful arguments from delegate math to Dukakis ("These attacks are insane/They just help John McCain"). Clearly, the fate of the Democratic party lies in her hands! Decide whether "her" refers to Hillary or Obama Girl and then exercise your democratic right to watch the video — at this point it's more like a civic duty, really.

How is Vicki doing this week?

My IM isn't working from this job...

Would someone with it tell Marc to be careful with that key since the Bio Alarm System picked up some sort of organism generated from the dirt on The Mall at the Peace Rally in 2005 and the Pentagon sprayed something into Crystal City last month.

IRAQ WRAPUP 6-Iraqi forces battle militias in Basra,

BASRA, Iraq, March 25 (Reuters) - Iraqi security forces battled the Mehdi Army militia in Basra on Tuesday in a drive to win control of the southern oil city, but violence appeared to be spreading to Baghdad and other cities.

Police and health workers said at least 12 people were killed in the fighting in districts of central and northern Basra where Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's Mehdi Army has a strong presence.

"There are clashes in the streets. Bullets are coming from everywhere and we can hear the sound of rocket explosions. This has been going on since dawn," resident Jamil told Reuters by telephone as he cowered in his home.

Columns of black smoke rose above the city and explosions and machinegun fire could be heard. Reuters Television pictures showed masked gunmen firing mortars in the street, while others drove around in captured Iraqi army and police vehicles.

The Mehdi Army, which has thousands of fighters, has kept a relatively low profile since last August when Sadr called a ceasefire, one of the main factors behind the sharp reduction in sectarian violence in Iraq in recent months.

Bush’s Dirty Secret:

Bush’s Dirty Secret: Bribing Iraq Insurgents Not to Fight

By Paul Craig Roberts

It is impossible to keep up with all the Bush regime’s lies. There are simply too many. Among the recent crop, one of the biggest is that the "surge" is working.

Launched last year, the "surge" was the extra 20,000-30,000 US troops sent to Iraq. These few extra troops, Americans were told, would finally supply the necessary forces to pacify Iraq.

This claim never made any sense. The extra troops didn’t raise the total number of US soldiers to more than one-third the number every expert has said is necessary in order to successfully occupy Iraq.

The real purpose of the "surge" was to hide another deception. The Bush regime is paying Sunni insurgents $800,000 a day not to attack US forces. That’s right, 80,000 members of an "Awakening group," the "Sons of Iraq," a newly formed "US-allied security force" consisting of Sunni insurgents, are being paid $10 a day each not to attack US troops.

Plan to Deal With Radiation Hazard Before Shoura Council
Ghazanfar Ali Khan, Arab News

RIYADH, 24 March 2008 — The Shoura Council has discussed a national plan to deal with any potential leakage of radioactive material in the Kingdom following warnings of possible attacks on Iran’s nuclear reactors.

“The plan to check radiation hazards was discussed by Shoura members, but it will be discussed and reviewed again before being tabled for voting,” a Shoura Council member said yesterday.

Knowledge, Vision and Strategy for Trade Union Revitalisation

By Mark Evans

Introduction

The trade union movement is in crisis. It is a crisis that is illustrated by the facts of plummeting membership and decline in the power of collective bargaining and influence in the political sphere. As a UK based trade union representative I believe that without strong trade union organisation the global justice movement will only ever have very limited success in resisting corporate led globalisation. Below I will try to pinpoint the main reasons for the current crisis before moving on to make suggestions for trade union movement revitalisation.
