One of the most influential scientists behind the theory that global warming causes hurricane activity to intensify is reversing his position. Hurricane expert Kerry Emanuel of MIT says in the March issue of Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society that hurricane frequency and intensity may not substantially rise over the next two centuries.

His new method of simulating weather patterns as computer models shows that there will be in fact an overall drop in the number of hurricanes. During the intense 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons, Emanuel was one of the first to blame global warming and even said that active storm seasons will become the norm.

But now Emanuel is changing his mind saying, "The results surprised me. The take home message is that we've got a lot of work to do."

One of the co-founders of Greenpeace, Patrick Moore, says that the environmental organization is wrong for calling nuclear energy "evil." He says, "We made the mistake of lumping nuclear energy in with nuclear weapons, as if all things nuclear were evil."

Moore, who left the organization in 1986 after 15 years of service, also lashed out at the movement he helped create saying, "That's why I left Greenpeace: I could see that my fellow directors were taking the organization into what I call 'pop environmentalism' which uses sensationalism, misinformation, fear tactics to deal with people on an emotional level rather than an intellectual level."

Apparently unhappy with the recently- merged company's political and business direction, talk radio syndication biggie Sean Hannity is exiting Citadel - ABC Radio (NYSE:CDL) for a yet- to- be- disclosed rival. The move could dramatically reshape programming lineups on a number of major stations.

Syndicated in over 500 markets nationwide, Hannity's afternoon drive show is said to bring in $35m in annual revenue, which will now be lost as Sean jumps ship. The program is considered to be the second- biggest cash generator in ABC Radio's network lineup, with his compensation at a reported $5m per annum.

Barack Obama's controversial former spiritual adviser was back in the pulpit over the weekend and so was his harsh view of America. Broken Republican Promises...

In each of the past two elections the republican party has relied on promising to protect gun rights and erase the line that divides church and state as a means to attract rural and small town voters. Now after 8 years the voters who voted for those issues can't afford to buy bullets for their guns or put gas in their car to drive to church.

Top in executions

LONDON — China executed more people than any other country in the world last year by putting at least 470 people to death, but the number of executions in the country actually fell compared to the year before, Amnesty International said.

In its annual report on worldwide executions, the human rights group said Tuesday that Iran remains the country with the second highest number of executions, and that the number had nearly doubled from the year before. The 377 inmates included a man stoned to death for committing adultery.

The United States was fifth in the rankings with 42 executions, reflecting a drop in the number of people put to death during the year. That was the lowest number of executions in the United States in about 15 years, Amnesty officials said. However, lethal injection executions have been on hold nationally while the U.S. Supreme Court considers a challenge in a case from Kentucky.

Amnesty analysts said China reformed the way capital cases are handled early in 2007, leading to a substantial reduction in executions. But they cautioned that the actual number of people put to death in China in 2007 is undoubtedly higher than the figure of 470 executions that could be confirmed — and they warned that the drop may be temporary.

Wholesale prices soar 1.1 percent in march, driven by big increases in food and energy

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Inflation at the wholesale level soared in March at nearly triple the rate that had been expected as the costs of energy and food both climbed rapidly.

The Labor Department reported Tuesday that wholesale prices rose by 1.1 percent last month, the largest increase since a 2.6 percent rise last November, which had been the biggest one-month jump in 33 years. Analysts had been expecting a much more moderate 0.4 percent rise in wholesale prices for the month.

Core inflation, which excludes energy and food, was better behaved last month, rising by just 0.2 percent, down from a worrisome 0.5 percent rise in February.

For the past 12 months, wholesale prices are up by 6.9 percent and core inflation is up by 2.7 percent, the biggest year-over-year increase in nearly two years.

The inflation pressures are occurring at a time when the overall economy is slowing and many analysts believe may have toppled into a recession. That raises concerns that the country could be facing another bout of stagflation, the malady that last occurred in the 1970s when economic growth stagnated but inflation kept rising.

Sound and Fury? Following up

Sound and Fury?
Following up on TPM Reader AY's note below, we seem to have a pretty good read now, which WaPo's Chris Cillizza says he was waiting for, on the effect of "bitter". We have three polls out today -- one shows a 2 point gain for Hillary, one shows a 2 point gain for Barack, and one shows no change at all.

So after four days of the story nonstop it appears to have had zero effect on public opinion.

Now, there is one possible counter-argument. Obama had been gaining ground up until this last run of polls, though SUSA had him falling. So it's plausible to speculate that he would have continued gaining if not for the latest controversy. That would suggest a parallel to Texas and Ohio, where Obama appeared to be making headway until the Nafta controversy and (possibly) the 3 AM ad blunted his momentum.

But based on what we know today it appears that all the sound and fury has signified nothing.

(ed.note: You'll note that two polls came out yesterday. ARG has a huge Clinton lead and huge Clinton gain and Susquehanna had a very small Clinton lead -- 3 points. ARG's record this year has been very poor however; and the Susquehanna sounding was a small sample, which in any case stopped sampling on the 10th, before controversy erupted. Of the three polls conducted after the flap about Obama's comments about the rational voting behavior of people in economically neglected communities, there's almost no change. One poll has a 4 point swing to Obama, another a 4 point swing to Clinton (both within the MoE), and the third has results identical to the previous survey.

It's possible that Clinton hammering Obama with a concerted ad campaign over his remarks about economically depressed small towns will hurt him. But it's also possible all that hammering with just give Clinton a swollen thumb.

The seed that was planted in the Constitution came from the Declaration of Independence, articulated and signed by the founding fathers and fought for by the blood of our country's founding patriots: "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." This is the seed that led to the abolishing of slavery.

As we reported last week, millionaire-funded and operative-helmed attack groups looking to make a splash in the elections this year are choosing nonprofits as their preferred vehicle. Acting as 501(c)(4) organizations, the groups are allowed to attack all they want and keep their donors secret.

There's a catch, of course. The groups are nominally "social welfare" organizations, groups that are allowed to engage in political activity as long as that is not its primary purpose. That's why you see all the groups claim that they are focused on issues, not candidates, even when it's apparent that's not the case.

It's a hazy line, and one that the groups hope that the IRS doesn't explore. But as Roll Call reported yesterday, the IRS says it's taking a "close look" at whether the groups go too far.

But don't expect the IRS to step in any time soon. The IRS official tells the paper that the IRS likely wouldn't act until after the groups filed their taxes next year (by which time, of course, a president might be in the White House due in large part to a campaign by a lawbreaking group). And what happens then? Well, it's unclear:

The IRS director also agreed that -- perhaps unlike the FEC -- a broad IRS sweep of wayward nonprofits may yield better results than the recent high-profile fining of 527s by election regulators. And although the IRS is likely to just revoke a group's tax status and slap it with a fine, another source within the IRS said that serious violators could "go through our criminal investigations area ... and it could end up at the Justice Department."

Rep. Barney Frank said the trailing Democratic presidential candidate should drop out of the race by no later than June 3 — the date of the two last Democratic primaries — even if it is the candidate he supports, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"Probably sooner," the Massachusetts congressman added in an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press. He suggested that the trailing candidate should drop out once it became clear that candidate had no remaining practical chance of winning the nomination.

South Dakota and Montana vote on that day. Sen. Barack Obama currently leads Clinton in both pledged delegates and in the popular vote. But neither can mathematically win a majority by that date and the final outcome will depend on superdelegates.

As a member of Congress, Frank is one of the nearly 800 elected officials and party leaders who are superdelegates to the Democratic National Convention.

Obama lately has been battling criticism over his remarks that some voters in small towns in Pennsylvania and in other parts of rural America have grown bitter because of hard economic times and hollow promises by politicians and "cling to guns and religion." Both Clinton and Sen. John McCain, the certain Republican nominee, have painted the Illinois senator as an elitist out of touch with small-town America.

Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said he thought that Obama had "a very legitimate point to make," but expressed it poorly.

"Bitter is not a good word to use," Frank said. He said Obama should have stuck with an economic argument rather than talking about guns and religion. Obama should have said "yes, people are angry," and that's why they should oppose trade deals that drive jobs abroad and other economic plans that disadvantage U.S. workers.

Have the two parties ever been more disappointing?

The one good thing about election 08 may be that if this tone continues, everyone will see that it's time for a real people-driven party.

At the top, of course, we have the Clinton/Obama battle going out of control, with Hillary the Democrat sounding more and more like McCain the Republican every day.

How dare Obama say working-class voters are frustrated, angry and fed up, Hillary says -- something McCain's party, which advocates for the over-taxed and powerless rich white upper class, has said for years. These two wealthy senators who haven't left Washington in years and seem convinced they're entitled to be president consider Obama 'elitist.'

And of course, there's McCain himself, saying the O-man wants to raise your taxes because he'll "let" Bush's tax cuts expire. Sorry, McCain, but that's the law the president and the GOP passed. That's like blaming the governor when your driver's license expires because you didn't get to the DMV in time to meet the deadline.

And also of course, McCain opposed the tax cuts in the first place. Could you be more disingeuous? {Flip-flop?}

One can only hope the voters see through this. And it should help Obama. It also makes the case for what the third-party people who turn to a Ralph Nader at times like these often say: the two parties are pretty much the same.

Because the two establishment candidates are saying pretty much the same thing as they take on the outsider, and the insiders are mocking the very idea of change. The level of the debate, meanwhile, sinks ever lower.

If Hillary succeeds in stealing the nomination from the guy getting the most votes, I'll have a hard time arguing the Democratic Party is any different from the GOP.

Prepare to have your credulity tested.

Back in February, the AP broke the story that the White House had secretly modified a proposed rule to crack down on contract fraud. The rule, originally drafted by the Justice Department, was intended to force contractors to police themselves and report evidence of fraud or abuse. But the White House's version of the rule specifically exempted contractors working overseas on contracts that exceeded $5 million.

The Justice Department, which needs all the help it can get in busting corrupt contractors, was dismayed. But it made the major overseas contractors (like, say, Blackwater, KBR, CACI International, etc.), who had been opposing the rule, very happy.

When the AP asked why the White House had inserted the loophole, no answers were forthcoming. A spokeswoman from the Office of Management and Budget would only say that it was a "proposed rule," and that they were reviewing public comments.

The first Congressional hearing was set for today. And the White House has let it be known that the loophole is gone -- and that it was all a big misunderstanding:

Reversing itself after months of criticism, the administration closed the loophole that was quietly slipped last year into a proposed Justice Department crackdown on government contract fraud....
Government policywriters said the original rule was drawn up quickly, and chided the Justice Department for not explicitly making sure that overseas contracts should be included in the crackdown. "It was only after publication of the proposed rule ... that DoJ and other respondents expressed concern about the overseas exemption," the draft states....

A Bush administration official on Monday called the loophole "a drafting error" that happened when policywriters merely cut and pasted a 20-year-old Defense Department regulation into the contracting crackdown.

Oh well. Mistakes do happen.

Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT), who had called for the hearing, seems not to take the White House's story at face value: "This investigation proves why oversight works.... The question is why it required a congressional investigation to prevent the Bush administration from giving overseas contractors a free pass to defraud taxpayers."

Lawmakers Want FBI Access to Data Curbed

Bipartisan groups in Congress are pressing to place new controls on the FBI's ability to demand troves of sensitive personal information from telephone providers and credit card companies, over the opposition of agency officials who say they deserve more time to clean up past abuses.

Proposals to rein in the use of secret "national security letters" will be discussed over the next week at hearings in both chambers. The hearings stem from disclosures that the FBI had clandestinely gathered telephone, e-mail and financial records "sought for" or "relevant to" terrorism or intelligence activities without following appropriate procedures.

The Justice Department's inspector general issued reports in 2007 and earlier this year citing repeated breaches. They included shoddy FBI paperwork, improper claims about nonexistent emergencies and an insufficient link between the data requests and ongoing national security probes.

"It is clear that the NSL authority is too overbroad and operates unchecked," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), a co-sponsor of the House bill. "We must give our law enforcement the tools they need to protect us, but any such powers must be consistent with the rule of law."

The House bill, sponsored by Nadler, Rep. Bill Delahunt (D-Mass.), Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.), would tighten the language governing when national security letters could be used, by requiring that they clearly pertain to investigations of a foreign power or an agent instead of just being considered "relevant" to such investigations.

The House bill would also force the FBI to destroy information that had been illegally obtained -- something that existing rules do not require -- and it would allow the recipient of a letter to file a civil lawsuit if the missive is found to be illegal or without sufficient factual justification.

So many Americans have failed to participate as Citizens and, instead, have invested so much of their freetime in escapist pasttimes. We are willingly giving up our Citizenship and replacing it with mere Consumerism.

My own pet peaves are lawnmowers. I've got a perfectly healthy mobile neighbor whose lawn is just about the size of a quarter of a lot and he got himself a riding mower and cuts that patch of lawn in ritualistic fashion. Now there's a guy whose consistency could benefit political engagement! This is just a little nitpicky example.

When you tune in to see the thousands of NASCAR "recreationists" who like to see gasoline burned for entertainment -- well, it becomes clear that each person counts in creating bigger and bigger literally problematic human behaviors that must be reconsidered as we face big climate changes, etc. It would be better to use that gas to commute to Washington AND PROTEST Government Waste and Crime than to continue the escapist pursuit!

Obama's use of the 'cling'word is valid, or else it wouldn't have STRUCK such a nerve. (Hillary herself used the term 'trailer park trash', so evidently she knows what would strike that nerve and she was willing to unethically capitalize on it! Disgusting!!)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Home foreclosure filings surged 57 percent in the 12 month-period ended in March and bank repossessions soared 129 percent from a year ago, as homeowners struggled to make mortgage payments, real estate data firm RealtyTrac said on Tuesday.

For the month of March, foreclosure filings, default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions rose 5 percent, led by Nevada, California and Florida, RealtyTrac said.

The rise in March to filings on a total of 234,685 properties followed a 4 percent decline in February, RealtyTrac reported.

RealtyTrac said the peak has yet to be reached.

"What we're really looking at is ongoing fallout from people overextending themselves to buy homes they couldn't afford and using highly toxic loan products to get into the houses in the first place," Rick Sharga, vice president of marketing at RealtyTrac, based in Irvine, California, said in an interview.

"We're going to see quite possibly a record amount of foreclosure activity in the third or fourth quarter," reflecting sharp payment increases on adjustable-rate subprime mortgages in May and June, Sharga said.

One in every 538 U.S. households living in single-family dwellings received a foreclosure filing in March. The single-family dwellings can include condominiums.

There are three phases of the foreclosure process in most states -- an initial default notice, notice of a scheduled auction, and an "REO" filing if the property is not sold at auction but instead repossessed by the bank, Sharga said.

REO refers to real estate-owned property.

All of the households in the report received at least one of these filings last month.

A growing number of bankruptcies among US retailers is set to prompt thousands of store closings, the New York Times will report on the front page of its Tuesday edition.

"The consumer spending slump and tightening credit markets are triggering a wave of bankruptcies in American retailing," with ensuing store closures "expected to remake suburban malls and downtown shopping districts across the country," writes Michael Barbaro for the Times.

Barbaro notes that over half a dozen store chains have filed for bankruptcy in recent months amidst "mounting debt and plummeting sales" and warns that financial troubles are "quickly spreading to bigger national companies."

The Times articles comes amid a slew of reports underscoring America's economic woes. Even presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, who only months ago panned talk of a recession, admitted today that he thought the country was now in one.

Even relatively well-off retailers face troubles. Added Barbaro in the article, such store chains who can avoid bankruptcy "are shutting down stores to preserve cash through what could be a long economic downturn."

This month the Pennsylvania House soundly defeated a bill to require handgun owners to report the theft or loss of their guns to police.

As the state's hotly contested April 22 primary approaches, the Democratic presidential candidates have struggled to avoid alienating either side, to the point of pandering.

I live in Florida and don't want to see anyone over the age of 70 driving on the roads unless they pass a law to submit all in that age bracket to stricter than usual ROAD tests for competency requirements. The same should be said for politicians.

The only time anyone seeks out the demographic that includes senior citizens it's when they're trying to put together a TV lineup made of Golden Girls, Murder She Wrote, Matlock et al. Sorry, But thems the facts. With a nod toward the truly devoted seniors who make it their business to live in the NOW and not let their brains turn to mush with not current interests.
I should know I have a very youthful looking 83 year old Mother who sadly had no interest in anything remotely cultural or political. And it's sad to see how her mind's degenerated as she appears outwardly to be more than 10 yrs younger than she is.

Off track? Forgive me but my point is. Sammy can go a lot farther than talk radio in the current state of "Everyone's a star" He is a star. And a real one with a viable REAL talent.

He's way too good for this cesspool.

If I was drawing up the Commander in Chief test, I can think of two questions that would be on there. First, what's the difference between Sunni and Shia. Second, who commands what in our military?

Just yesterday, John McCain seemed to say that General Petraeus is the top military commander of our Armed Forces, telling the Associated Press that he wouldn't shift the focus of the military from Iraq to Afghanistan "unless Gen. [David] Petraeus said that he felt that the situation called for that."

Petraeus, of course, is our commander of forces in Iraq. That's it. He's not responsible for Afghanistan, or our regional commitment, or our global commitments. As a Commander in Chief, McCain should know that there are people much more qualified to speak to our global strategy than Petraeus -- including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the Secretary of Defense, and the CENTCOM commander.

Of course, this is all a side-point, because the Commander in Chief makes these decisions, ultimately, not one General, as Senator McCain seems to be saying.

Sen. Barack Obama's political opponents charge that his recent remarks on the economic woes and bitterness of low-income voters put him gravely out of touch with small town Pennsylvanians.

But a review of campaign finance records -- conducted for The Huffington Post by the Spotfire Division of software firm TIBCO -- reveals that it is Obama, not Clinton, who has received the majority of donations from these very same Keystone State communities.

Indeed, through then end of February 2008, Obama received nearly $250,000 in contributions from Pennsylvanians residing in zip codes with populations under 30,000 people. That total, which does not include Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and both city's suburbs, was roughly $30,000 more than the amount raised by Clinton: $220,000.

When the population size is made even smaller, Obama continues to best his Democratic rival. Among those non-urban Pennsylvania zip codes with populations under 20,000, the Illinois Democrat has brought in just over $200,000. Clinton has raised slightly more than $170,000.

Now, cracks are starting to appear in the IPv6 egg.

They haven't released many details yet, but U.S. carriers say they are developing commercial services that will take advantage of IPv6, a long-anticipated upgrade to the Internet's main communications protocol known as IPv4. Many of the new services are due out in the next year, carriers say.

IPv6 uses a 128-bit addressing scheme and supports a virtually limitless number of devices connected directly to the Internet. IPv4, on the other hand, has 4.3 billion addresses, and most of them have been handed out. IPv4 address space is expected to run out by 2012, a deadline that is forcing carriers around the world to migrate to IPv6.

"We've seen commitments by the major telecom carriers. They're going to be IPv6 ready and enabled by 2010," says Jerry Edgerton, CEO of Command Information, a Herndon, Va., provider of IPv6 services whose carrier customers include Verizon and British Telecom. "These carriers are now global players, and so are their customers. IBM just moved its supply chain management to China last year. This globalization factor is going to drive demand to IPv6. If I'm a global enterprise, I need to be compatible with the rest of the world."

I am not seeing too much demand for this on the enterprise level yet, most transport level carriers (ATT, Level3, etc) are far enough into their upgrade that they will not have any trouble keeping up when demand arises. That will not start happening in earnest until we start running out of ipv4 ip address, which should be within the next 2 years.

Most of the networking equipment being produced today is all 6net ready. I would advise anyone who is remotely involved with setting up networks to get started on learning this asap. It is not too complicated, but it deals strictly in hex and is alien to some

My boy came back from Iraq with one less leg and only 2 fingers on his left hand. I used to joke with him he was never good with his hands but he was always good with the books. He wants to go to college but can't do it on his disability payments (which got cut recently). Hell, I got drafted to go to 'Nam and had full G.I. benefits for college but was too dumb to use them. Now he volunteers, does 3 tours in Iraq and gets squat.

John McCain won't vote for G.I. Educational benefits even though he used them to get his law degree.

What the fuck is wrong with that man God?

Sorry 'bout the language, I'm bitter but you knew that anyway, after all you are God.

If I can get some gas in the truck I promise to make it to church this week. Don't worry about the bullets. It's no fun huntin' without my boy anyway.

Brown's US trip overshadowed by Pope's visit

He's been on the front pages of all the major newspapers and the focus of fevered public attention for days. He will tour baseball stadiums and address the United Nations.

But the world leader whose visit has America transfixed is not the man from Kirkcaldy. It's the cleric from Bavaria causing all the commotion, and it appears inevitable that he will upstage Britain's prime minister over the next few days.

Gordon Brown flies into the US tonight just hours after Pope Benedict XVI's arrival from the Vatican for his first visit.

Although Brown's three-day trip has been billed by Downing Street as one of the most important of his premiership, it is being swamped in the US by the coverage of the Pope's visit.

The pontiff has already had thousands of column inches in the US papers — and been on the front pages of the New York Times and Washington Post since last week, with long features inside — while Brown's visit has yet to warrant a mention in either publication.

British officials disclosed today that they had been unaware of the Pope's plans to visit the US when a date for meeting George Bush was fixed.

It was days before they discovered that it would coincide with a papal visit, but by then it was too late. An official said: "We knew early on that the visit clashed with the Pope. There was no suggestion of moving it."

The Pope is due to meet Bush at the White House tomorrow morning, an event to be attended by thousands, while Brown is scheduled to make a more subdued visit on Thursday.
The biggest diary clash will be on Friday, when Brown is to make a major speech on foreign policy, calling for the reshaping of international institutions such as the UN.

But the prime minister's speech in Boston is in danger of being largely overlooked as the Pope, in an unfortunate piece of timing, is addressing the UN general assembly on the same day. An official tried to put a brave face on it today, claiming publicity was not necessarily the most important criterion and that Brown's speech would be read by foreign policy specialists.

Now that was a real hi-tech lynching. Moreover, there is talk that the old geez has a squeeze on the side. That's why he remain quiet during his tenure as chairman of the senate judiciary. Chimpy had the goods on him.

As far as Chris "Chucky" Mathews is concern, Pennsylvania did reject his brother as Lieutenant Governor. But, considering they elected Santorum and Specter, well, let's hope they have wised up. But don't hold your breath.

The Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg just released their latest polls from Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Indiana. Here are the head-to-head numbers:
The poll found Clinton leading Obama 46% to 41% in Pennsylvania -- a far cry from the double-digit margins she held in earlier polls.

In Indiana, where little polling has occurred, previous surveys gave Clinton the edge. The Times/Bloomberg poll put Obama ahead, 40% to 35%.

The leads in Pennsylvania and Indiana are within the poll's margin of sampling error.

In North Carolina, the poll found, Obama leads Clinton 47% to 34% -- a finding in keeping with expectations that he will do well in the state, which has a large African American population. Among blacks there, 71% supported Obama; only 5% backed Clinton and 24% were undecided.

One reason Clinton is struggling in Indiana and North Carolina is that a mainstay of her coalition in earlier contests -- women -- have been defecting. In Indiana, the poll found women split their vote, 35% for each candidate. In North Carolina, they favored Obama, 43% to 36%.
Many interesting nuggets, but this is probably the most interesting:
In Pennsylvania, the flap seems to have marginally helped Obama more than hurt him: 24% said his handling of the issue made them think more highly of him; 15% said it made them think less highly of him; 58% said it made no difference in their views.
Let's see how the painfully pompous pundits dissect that number. Of course, they'll all have to wait for Time Magazine's chief pompous pundit, Mark Halperin, to explain what it means. But, he'll have to wait for the talking points from his high level source at the Clinton campaign to explain it to him.

Remember, Clinton is supposed to win Pennsylvania by 20 points. That's the margin she needs to declare victory.

I do hope he is able to get treatment and beat this again of course and did say that the dx was very sad because any relapse means that he has to go thru all he went thru treatment wise all over again, just as he has gotten back on his feet.

I do hope he has the strength to go thru treatment and recover. Regardless of what he has and has not done.

Barack Obama's dad was such an important but absent figure in his life that he devoted his first book, Dreams From My Father, to the search for details about his father's life and how the quest helped forge a son's identity.

Now, a long-forgotten essay written 43 years ago by Obama's father has surfaced, and its contents reveal much not only about the senior Obama's grasp of economic theory but also the iconoclastic politics that, his son would later write, sent him into the spiral of career disappointment that concluded with his death in 1982 in his native Kenya.

Parts of the article, titled "Problems Facing Our Socialism," have been making the rounds on several small blogs over the past week, but Politico is now reproducing the entire piece in its original form online for the first time. (Click here to read it on Politico.com (PDF))

The scholarly eight-page paper credited to "Barak H. Obama" is never mentioned in Dreams From My Father, nor has the candidate discussed it in any of his many public speeches. (Politico brought the article to the campaign's attention late last week, but aides did not respond to a request for a comment from Obama.)

The paper's substance, though, offers insight into the mind and the political trajectory of a man described by his son largely through his emotional life, his family, and his traditions.

Published in the esoteric East Africa Journal in 1965, the year after Kenyan President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta took power and the country declared independence from British rule, the paper takes a gently mocking tone to the Kenyatta government's key, controversial statement of economic policy, titled "African Socialism and its Applicability to Planning in Kenya."

Obama Sr.'s journal article repeatedly asks what the Kenyan government means by "African Socialism," as distinct from Soviet-style communism, and concludes that the new phrase doesn't mean much.

Elements of Obama's argument now seem prescient, others deeply dated, but his central aim - particularly in the context of the heady early days of African independence - was moderate and conciliatory.

"The question is how are we going to remove the disparities in our country such as the concentration of economic power in Asian and European hands while not destroying what has already been achieved and at the same time assimilating these groups to build one country," Obama Sr. wrote.

When he wrote the paper, he was in Nairobi and working toward a never-completed Harvard doctoral dissertation, according to his brief biography in the journal. He had divorced his wife, who was raising his son in Hawaii, two years earlier.

But even back in Nairobi, Obama Sr. also felt free to mock the Kenyan government.

The hospital was rated the nation’s worst VA facility in a 1995 study, though a spokeswoman said that “more than $250,000 has been spent during the last six months to eliminate suicide risks” there. In November, CBS reported that “at least 6,256 US veterans committed suicide in 2005 — an average of 17 a day.”

The video — part of an exhibit funded by $10 million from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. — alleges liberal bias in the media by interviewing Accuracy in Media’s Cliff Kincaid, NBC News anchor Brian Williams, journalist Clarence Page, Fox anchor Brit Hume, and Fox contributor Juan Williams. Schwarz writes:

At seven minutes long, the video is like cable news in general: unbelievably superficial. It shows snippets from Bill Clinton’s angry response to questions on 9/11 from Fox’s Chris Wallace in 2006, and George H.W. Bush’s angry response to questions on the Iran-Contra scandal from CBS’ Dan Rather in 1988. Then it describes a 2006 Gallup poll in which 44% of Americans called the media “too liberal,” while 19% found it “too conservative.” Hume tells us that those who think journalists are liberals are “by and large correct,” while Brian Williams explains that until recently “conservative America” had nowhere to go for its news.

So the message, while shallow, is clear: the media is liberal, and any critique that it may have a corporate or conservative bias is so ridiculous it doesn’t even need to be voiced.

Tibet's spiritual leader the Dalai Lama maintained Monday that Beijing was carrying out "cultural genocide" in the Himalayan territory despite denial of the charge by the Chinese leadership.

In an interview with NPR, the US public radio network, the exiled 72-year-old leader currently on a US visit also expressed confidence he would eventually return to his homeland.

The Dalai Lama, who is on exile in India after fleeing a failed 1959 uprising, lamented the loss of Tibetan culture under Beijing's so-called autonomy rule.

"Since we have our own unique cultural heritage, including our language, our script, these matters should be in the hands of Tibet, who knows about our culture, about our religion," he said.

"With this present arrangement, whether intentionally or unintentionally, some kind of cultural genocide is taking place," said the Dalai Lama, whose US visit is his first overseas trip since Beijing's clampdown of pro-Tibet protests.

Tibetan exiles claim the crackdown has left more than 150 Tibetans dead while Beijing says Tibetan "rioters" have killed 20 people in the latest disturbances in the territory...

Group: Campaign Finance Reformer Has the Most Lobbyists Raising Campaign Money

Washington lobbyists and members of Congress gathered at a popular Capitol Hill bar and restaurant last night to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, whose staff refused to disclose exactly how much was raised or by whom.

"Like most campaigns, we do not release numbers of attendees or dollars raised per event," said McCain spokesperson B.J. Boling.

While McCain did not attend the event, a copy of the invitation obtained by ABCNews.com shows that donors who paid between $1,000 and $2,300 were invited to rub elbows with some of the 32 members of Congress supporting McCain for a reception at the Charlie Palmer Steakhouse. Donors who raised at least $10,000 were designated co-chairmen for the event and were treated to a "VIP Roundtable" before the main reception. The invitation lists 24 lobbyists as "co-chairman" for the event. The lobbyists represent a range of industries, including the finance, telecommunications, technology and healthcare sectors.

McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates, according to the latest finding from government watchdog group Public Citizen. The group, which advocates for public financing of elections, has identified more than 2,300 well-connected individuals, known as "bundlers," who have solicited contributions from friends and associates on behalf of a presidential candidate.

McCain reveals confusion over Petraeus role

Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona may not have been paying the closest of attention last week during hearings on the Bush administration’s Iraq policy.

Speaking Monday at the annual meeting of the Associated Press, McCain was asked whether he, if elected, would shift combat troops from Iraq to Afghanistan to intensify the search for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

“I would not do that unless Gen. [David] Petraeus said that he felt that the situation called for that,” McCain said, referring to the top U.S. commander in Iraq.

Petraeus, however, made clear last week that he has nothing to do with the decision. Testifying last week before four congressional committees, including the Senate Armed Services Committee on which McCain is the ranking Republican, Petraeus said the decision about whether troops could be shifted from Iraq to Afghanistan was not his responsibility because his portfolio is limited to the multi-national force in Iraq.

Decisions about Afghanistan would be made by others, he said.

“I’ve been sort of focused on another task,” Petraeus said when pressed about whether more troops should be diverted to Afghanistan rather than Iraq.

McCain did not stay for the full Petraeus appearance before the armed services committee, so he might have missed that explanation.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Adm. Michael Mullen, has talked about the possibility that reducing troop levels in Iraq would make it easier to send more U.S. forces to Afghanistan.

In his remarks at the Associated Press meeting, McCain said he is concerned about stress on the force.

Merck minimized the true risks of Vioxx: JAMA study

The risk of death linked to Merck's anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx was minimized in trial studies the company made public, according to a study out Tuesday.

The report, appearing in the April 18 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), compares Merck's internal data from 2001 with the results of clinical tests made public in 2004 and 2005.

Merck voluntarily withdrew Vioxx from sale in September 2004 after a 2001 company internal study showed the drug doubled the risks of heart attack in patients who took it for 18 months or longer.

"Sponsors have a marketing interest to represent their products in the best light. This approach conflicts with scientific standards that require the symmetric and comparable reporting of safety and efficacy data," wrote doctors Bruce Psaty and Richard Kronmal with the University of Washington, Seattle, the study co-authors.

The analysis was based on clinical tests carried out in 2000 and 2001 on 3,000 Alzheimer patients.

"The mortality findings and the Alzheimer disease findings would, in our judgment ... (led to) to stop the trial early," the researchers wrote.

Merck's internal analyses dating from April 2001 of pooled data from the two trials "identified a significant three-fold increase in total mortality."

But, the new study said, "These mortality analyses were neither provided to the FDA nor made public in a timely fashion."

Merck said in a statement it was not given a chance to respond to the article prior to publication.

"We are disappointed that such false and misleading statements about Merck from trial lawyers have made their way into a medical journal," said Peter Kim, president of Merck Research Laboratories.

According to Merck, "a full, unbiased evaluation of the Merck documents shows significant errors in the conclusions put forward by the authors of the JAMA articles."

it was about posting videos. MMR said the link would be good so the dialup people didn't have probs loading the blog. So Lucille changed to the link.

A few of us asked her to say a little of what the links were and I explained that I didn't go to a link I didn't know because I ruined 2 computers with viruses because of links on the old MRR blog.

Lucille said she was sorry and wouldn't be posting any more. And that's all of it.

But - no roasted apples tonight - Chinese - Sesame Chicken. And yes I do use chopsticks - real ones not the break apart ones from the restaurant - so I can't eat and type, cause I need to hold the bowl with one hand, and move the food with the other.
