Dear MoveOn member,

CNN is now reporting that up to 100,000 people have died from the cyclone that hit Burma. The scale of this disaster is hard to even imagine, and relief is urgently needed. Obama Shifts Focus To McCain & He Needs Only 173 More Delegates

After last night Obama needs only 173 more delegates to cinch the democratic nomination for president. Hillary probably will be mostly given a pass to continue until after the next big primaries later this month. Even with her winning West Virginia, Obama is still going to pickup more delegates making it only a matter of time until her team decides how she is going to bow out and comes to some type of deal with the Obama team.

Obama Shifts His Focus To McCain

By Patrick Healy and Jeff Zeleny, Published: May 7, 2008

"After a commanding victory in North Carolina and a strong showing in Indiana that left Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton with diminishing options, Senator Barack Obama has declared himself on "a clear path to victory" in the campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination and warned supporters that Democrats would face a bruising campaign against Senator John McCain.

But as Obama turned his sights on the presumptive Republican nominee, Clinton vowed to fight on and seemed surprisingly energetic as she added a campaign stop in West Virginia for that state's primary Tuesday. But her advisers also acknowledged that with too little money flowing in, Clinton had loaned her campaign $6.4 million in the past month and faced serious financial challenges."

"The results from the two primaries - Obama won by a decisive 14-point margin in North Carolina and lost by just 2 points in Indiana - widened the Illinois senator's lead in pledged delegates and should help him persuade Democratic leaders to coalesce around his campaign.

The results demonstrated his ability to weather the storm over his former pastor's incendiary remarks and they increased his lead in the popular vote, undercutting a key Clinton argument about his electability."

Humans may spread platypus disease: researcher

A mysterious fungal disease is infecting growing numbers of Tasmanian platypuses. (University of Tasmania: Dr Niall Stewart)
Map: Campbell Town 7210

New research into a fungus killing Tasmanian platypuses suggests the disease could be spread by soil on car wheels or bushwalkers shoes.

Research fellow at the University of Tasmania, Niall Stewart says the disease is rapidly spreading throughout the state but exactly how it's being transmitted is still a mystery.

Dr Stewart says it is likely the disease is being spread from animal to animal, although they're investigating other possibilities.

"We're wondering whether four wheel drives can carry it in, mud on the four wheel drive vehicle or it could be walked into an area on bushwalkers feet - it's one of those areas of the disease that we know nothing about," he said.

"We know that the disease occurs but we don't know how the fungus that causes it, moves about the place."

"It looks more like it's spreading from animal to animal, it was in a small area around Campbell Town and it seems to be spreading out from that area as the years go by," said Dr Stewart.

"Being a fungal pathogen, I mean it could even be carried possibly by birds and animals as well, it's just one of the many things we don't know about it yet."

Dr Stewart says people can help with the research by reporting diseased animals.

"If people do see them, that's what we're interested in finding out, as I said we've only got about two people on the field work at the moment so it's sort of hard for them," he said.

"I mean they're going flat chat all around the state trapping, but if we get a few people who are out fishing, bushwalking or something who spot them if they could give us a tingle, that would be great."

Wow, we're Nobel Nominated!

That trumps O'Reilly's imaginary Peabodies!

Beyond Problems:

Into Brainstorming Creative Solutions for Change

Every senator and congressman who votes to fund an illegal war of aggression is complicit in that war and is hence a criminal.

Curious to discover whether this month’s Virginia event would be merely yet one more lame “progressive” conference… or, one that could actually initiate real change, I contacted Garda Ghista, the president of theconference sponsoring organization, World Prout Assembly...

...

"More astute citizens, however, are finally waking up to the true Mayday nightmare scenario in which we are now living. And those who actually know what is going on fully realize that, regardless of which of the current, Rove-approved, Three Muskateer political candidates - who spar for the camera, sprouting claws on cue - wins the election? The genocidal slaughter taking place both inside the US and across the sea – will continue, unabated. Meanwhile, phone calls and letters to Congress fall upon the deaf ears of federal sociopaths who apparently have decided some time ago they no longer even need to pretend like they care. Both political parties are good-to-go with waging the current radioactive wars - using Depleted and non-Depleted Uranium both - upon dying nations while outraged Americans in an ever-sinking economy devoted to wars everlasting lose, first, their vacations, then eventually their jobs, their homes, their medical coverage, and their ability to put wholesome, non-genetically modified, non-irradiated food on their dinner tables."

“Building A New World” Conference
May 22 in Virginia

...not merely to share more information on radical topics than the controlled “left” events would ever allow. Instead, according to the stated goals for the “Building A New World” Conference by lead organizer, Garda Ghista, this is a different type of conference - one that promises to deliver room and space for bright minds and accomplished activists to “think outside the box” and brainstorm solutions for desperately needed political, social, humanitarian, and economic change.

Wednesday, May 7, 2008 - The morning after: Let the beginning begin

...
Unlike many Obama supporters, I have never seen this particular man from Illinois as a savior, even if there is some irony in the possibility that the first Black president would hail from the same state as Abraham Lincoln. As a life-long leftwinger (well, at least during my adult life, as I was for Barry Goldwater as a naive high school junior obsessed with the Communist menace), I don't have any illusions that Obama is anything more than a good liberal from the more leftish wing of the Democratic Party. And as many of my friends know, I strongly believe that the failure of the Democratic Party to deliver on its promises over the past decades is the main reason that Americans have moved politically to the right, supporting candidates like Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush--very much against their own best interests, as they seem to be figuring out at long last.

The Clintons, despite Bill's personal charm and charisma, were emblematic of this failure. I am thrilled to see the relegation of Clintonian politics to the dustbin of history, and when I drank those cognacs that was in large part what I was celebrating.

This is also why I have refused to vote for Democratic candidates most of the past 40 years since I became eligible to vote. In 1968, as a first time voter, I cast my ballot for Eldridge Cleaver of the Peace and Freedom Party; I did not vote for president again until 2004, when, partly out of solidarity with my desperate liberal friends--but mostly because I felt that the politics of George Bush had to be seen to be repudiated before we could make any progress in this country--I voted for John Kerry. But the lackluster, hesitant, cowardly Kerry, with everything he had going for him including an already very unpopular war in Iraq, proved incapable of inspiring Americans to vote for him out of anything other than desperation to get rid of Bush--and desperation does not seem to be enough to win elections these days. Inspiration seems to work much better.

That is why Barack Obama is likely to beat McCain when the two finally get to fight mano-a-mano, because he is an inspiring and charismatic candidate who will be going up against an opponent who insists on running on George W. Bush's record--and I say, let him. But to me, this is not really about Obama.

Platypus Fans -> Neither Fish Nor Fowl: Platypus Genome Decoded!

Neither fish nor fowl: Platypus genome decoded

Published: Wednesday May 7, 2008

Arguably the oddest beast in Nature's menagerie, the platypus looks as if were assembled from spare parts left over after the animal kingdom was otherwise complete.

Now scientists know why. According to a study released Wednesday, the egg-laying critter is a genetic potpourri -- part bird, part reptile and part lactating mammal.

The task of laying bare the platypus genome of 2.2 billion base pairs spread across 18,500 genes has taken several years, but will do far more than satisfy the curiosity of just biologists, say the researchers.

"The platypus genome is extremely important, because it is the missing link in our understanding of how we and other mammals first evolved," explained Oxford University's Chris Ponting, one of the study's architects.

"This is our ticket back in time to when all mammals laid eggs while suckling their young on milk."

Native to eastern Australia and Tasmania, the semi-aquatic platypus is thought to have split off from a common ancestor shared with humans approximately 170 million years ago.

The creature is so strange that when the first stuffed specimens arrived in Europe at the end of the 18th century, biologists believed they were looking at a taxidermist's hoax, a composite stitched together from the body of a beaver and the snout of a giant duck.

But the peculiar mix of body features are clearly reflected in the animal's DNA, the study found...

If I remember correctly, I think the King either wanted to ban the platypus family until their prince was born, or the platypus family did go live somewhere else until the prince was born because the royal family was so upset....
Rogers way of teaching the difference between humans and animal reproduction cycles....I remember NOT liking the banning or whatever it was that was discussed about the platypus family having their baby first causing a problem...but I was a very sensitive child.

What We Do Matters

Amy Goodman Interview with The Progressive -

Excerpt:

Q: You and David have a new book coming out in April, Standing Up to the Madness. What’s it about?

    Goodman:

The idea of how people make a difference. People make up movements in every continent.

Every action we engage in really does matter, whether it's kids trying to put on a school play and being told they can’t talk about war. It’s about dissident soldiers and officers who say no.

Even when the trend is going the other way, what it means to find that strength inside and say, "I cannot live with this." This determines what direction we go in and defines history.

Excerpt of interview with Amy Goodman:

    Tavis:

I've only got about 30 seconds here, right quick. Let me ask how it is that you remain hopeful, given that what you do is really cutting against the grain every day.

    Goodman:

Because I see so many people in every walk of life who are standing up, who are being so brave. I see so many movements, people in this country and around the world. This year is a turning point itself.

I mean, it is so critical that people act - it's not so much who someone votes for, it's that they're involved.

And it's not just standing up for themselves or their community, but what people do next November and how people organize now will affect people all over the world, because we are in the most powerful country on Earth.

    What we do matters.

    Tavis:

Amy Goodman has a new book out, co-written with her brother, David Goodman. It's called Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times.

There are few people who I admire and respect more than I respect and admire Amy Goodman for what she does every day.

Fun Platypi Facts!!!

  • The birth of the first platypun captivity in 1944 at Healesville Sanctuary (outside Melbourne, Australia) was such big news it made headlines around the world, despite the fact World War II was still raging. She was named Corrie and was born under the care of zoologist David Fleay.1
  • It took 47 years for another birth in captivity—in 1991 at Warrawong Sanctuary in South Australia.2 Then in 1999, Healesville again made headlines with the rare birth of twins in captivity.3
  • The platypus is extremely difficult to breed in captivity. Experts say this is because it is so secretive and shy in nature. It also likes routine and order in its life. Creating a habitat in which it feels perfectly at home is considered the greatest secret in successful breeding.4
  • In 1943, Winston Churchill requested David Fleay send him six live platypuses from Australia. Fleay, knowing how difficult it was for his animals to travel, settled on sending just one. Named ‘Winston’, he was placed in a platypusary specially designed to handle the long sea voyage on the MV Port Phillip, along with a huge supply of his favourite food. Remarkably, Winston was thriving on the ship until it was forced to launch a depth charge against a submarine. Hi Star Vox...

I can't help but wonder if you think I am of the opinion that "what we do doesn't matter"....To me what is futile, and "doesn't matter" is the Democratic Party....and Obama...Sorry that's how I feel...I completely understand people who think "more and better dems" is the way to go...I just disagree...A lot...So I hope you and I don't have 'hard feelings' for thinking differently...

Fuck man...maybe I really do I have to find another place to hang out..Because we seem very different from each other (mostly) at this stage of this election...and I feel weird and alone..

I don't even think I know of any places that haven't taken sides

Cyclone Nargis - (Myanmar) Burma

Burma Cyclone -- Stand With The People

Thanks for your post, MMRules.

Hopefully, more help will be allowed into the country.

The World Food Programme has begun to distribute food in and around Burma's main city, Rangoon.

Tens of thousands of people are believed to have been killed, and about a million left homeless by last week's storm.

Survivors face poor sanitation and a lack of access to clean water.

The aid to the populations hit by the Cyclone Nargis represents a major logistical challenge for the UN agency specialised in food assistance.

Reports from the devastated town of Labutta speak of many hungry refugees gathering there (amid the dead bodies).

Many of their boats were destroyed during the cyclone. There are few homes that survived.

--------------

From the World Food Program (one of the few organizations allowed into the country) -

The need for food – especially products like HEBs which can be easily delivered and consumed – is growing, as are water, sanitation, and medical needs.

The death toll and number of homeless are rising each day.

In other developments, the reluctance of the Government of Myanmar to lift the restriction on the movement of commodities and international staff has not changed significantly.

WFP and other UN agencies are awaiting word on the granting of visas for teams of disaster response workers.

In this corner of the universe, a prizefighter named Bolie Jackson, one hundred eighty-three pounds and an hour and a half away from a comeback at St. Nick's Arena. Mr. Bolie Jackson, who by the standards of his profession is an aging, over-the-hill relic of what was, and who now sees a reflection of a man who has left too many pieces of his youth in too many stadiums for too many years before too many screaming people. Mr. Bolie Jackson, who might do well to look for some gentle magic in the hard-surfaced glass that stares back at him.

A boxer breaks his hand before a fight. He is then, of course, he is beaten up so badly in the fight, that he is easily knocked down. But suddenly time freezes, and he switches places with the other boxer. He thinks it is a miracle, but his neighbor, a boy named Henry, says it is because he made a "big, tall wish".

Watchdogs prompt FBI to withdraw 'unconstitutional' National Security Letter.

Nick Juliano
Published: Wednesday May 7, 2008

The FBI has withdrawn an illegal National Security Letter seeking information from an online library and has lifted a gag order that until Wednesday prevented any discussion of the information request.

Lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union and Electronic Frontier Foundation helped the Internet Archive push back against what they say was an overly broad and unlawful request for information on one of its users. The FBI issued its National Security Letter in November, but ACLU, EFF and Archive officials were precluded from discussing it with anyone because of a gag order they say was unconstitutional.

After nearly five months of haggling, the FBI eventually withdrew its NSL, which requested personal information about at least one user of the Internet Archive. Founded in 1996, the archive is recognized as a library by the state of California, and its collections include billions of Web records, documents, music and movies.

Mr. Bolie Jackson

Mr. Bolie Jackson, a hundred and eighty-three pounds, who left a second chance lying in a heap on a rosin-splattered canvas at St. Nick's Arena. Mr. Bolie Jackson, who shares the most common ailment of all men, the strange and perverse disinclination to believe in a miracle, the kind of miracle to come from the mind of a little boy, perhaps only to be found in the Twilight Zone.

big, tall wish

Even though Jackson breaks his hand prior to the fight, he wins because Henry - a boy who adores the fighter and believes in magic - made the "big, tall wish." After the fight the boxer refuses to believe in magic. Henry tells him if he doesn't believe, it won't be true. Jackson just can't believe. Suddenly, Jackson is back in the ring, and counted out.

Scarborough wants tear gas in streets at Democratic Convention

Pigboy now Joe Bendover..If a Democrat ever said this Crap,it
would be news 24/7 !

It makes me sick !

By David Edwards CNBC business analyst Mark Hanes delivered the economic news on MSNBC, then asked host Joe Scarborough to explain why Hillary Clinton isn’t being given more credit for narrowly winning the primary in Indiana, where some early polls had showed Obama leading.

Scarborough explained that Clinton failed to meet recent expectations and that, just as with corporate earning statements, that’s what counts.

“You don’t want this to end, do you?” Hanes asked in conclusion.

“Of course not,” Scarborough replied. “I want the Stones’ Street Fighting Man played in the background while I monitor the streets of Denver with tear gas, the ghost of Abbie Hoffman rising up over the auditorium. Yeah, baby, I want a fight — on both sides”

Bolie Jackson is a washed-up boxer who accidentally breaks the knuckles of his hand right before his big comeback fight. He is knocked down and just about to be counted out when he suddenly, magically switches places with the other boxer. Bolie is now standing over his vanquished opponent who is now the one lying on the canvas being counted out.

Bolie celebrates his victory without even a trace of his broken hand. He doesn't understand what happened. He remembers being knocked down, being unable to get up, knowing he was about to be counted out. He has no memory of getting back up to win the fight, nor can he figure out why his previously broken knuckles feel fine. However when he mentions being knocked down to his manager, his manager tells Bolie that he must be crazy, that he was never knocked down at all. Bolie can think of no explanation so he attributes his memories to being some sort of strange dream. He doesn't remember how he achieved his great victory, but he is all too happy to believe in it when he is told how brilliantly he fought. He figures his knuckles must have only been bruised, not broken, after all.

However, there is one other person besides Bolie who does remember Bolie being knocked down and about to be counted out. That person is young Henry, the son of Bolie's neighbor. And he has an explanation for what happened that reversed that fate. Specifically, Henry tells Bolie that he, Henry, has the power to make a wish and have it come true. And that he had used the biggest, tallest wish he could come up with for Bolie. Henry says that as Bolie lay there on the canvas, about to be counted out, Henry wished that it was the other fighter who had been beaten and that Bolie were the victor. He wished as hard as he possibly could and thus the wish came true.

Bolie can't accept this. He says he doesn't believe in the power of a wish. That belief is for children, not adults. He insists that whether he remembers it or not, he must have simply fought a great fight and that?s all there is to it. Henry warns Bolie that the only way the wish can have its power is if you believe in it. If Bolie doesn't believe, the wish will not be true.

But ultimately Bolie is unswayed. He cannot summon enough childhood spirit within himself to believe in wishes. He finally and fully rejects that a wish could have had anything to do with what happened. And as soon as he does so, time is reversed. We are back to where we started, with Bolie lying on the canvas, and the other fighter standing over him. This time the referee finishes counting Bolie out. He has lost the fight. His broken knuckles are very much and very painfully present and accounted for.

No one has any memory of the alternate history in which Bolie was the victor. Henry remembers making the biggest wish he possibly could for Bolie as Bolie was lying there on the canvas, but obviously the wish didn?t work. So he declares with resignation that he won?t be making any more wishes. He no longer believes in their power. And so Henry has lost this magic of his youth, and has become just like all the rest of us.
