The Democratic party

Good summary of how I feel about the Democratic party. I'm quoting populistindependent from the RigInt discussion board. Breaking it into two posts:

"After four decades of real progress spearheaded by the Democratic party - the 30's, the 40's, the 50's, the 60's - we now have four decades of stagnation and political paralysis and domination by the extreme right wing. That coincides with the party abandoning a strong, coherent, compelling and unified program of advocacy for economic justice and instead adopting a grab bag of isolated and disconnected and controversial causes on "culture war" issues.

Think about this: 65-75% of the public, regardless of education level or race or geographical location, supports all of the traditional left wing programs. Public education, workers' rights, workplace safety, government regulated public utilities, protection and preservation of public resources, support for ag research and management, food and safety inspection, universal health care, regulation and restriction of capital and finance, consumer protections of all kinds, public transportation, equal protection under the law.

So why is it that we do not have a solid base of 65% or more of the public to work with? The public does not trust us. They do not think we stand for, nor do they think we will fight for any of those things. Why is that? Because we don't and we won't. We have not for almost 40 years.

Public transportation? Hah. We advocate bike riding, which is not realistic for most working people, and hardly a week goes by without someone here claiming that riding a bike is "saving the planet." Is there any wonder that many in the public roll their eyes at that and reject modern liberalism?

Public education? Hardly. We don't stand in solidarity with the teachers unions, we don't strongly advocate for universal public education. Why is it that when we are smearing those "stuck on stupid" people out there who won't agree with us, I never see anyone advocate for increased spending on public education? No such connection is made. No, we say get rid of "them" - "fuck 'em! we don't need them!" and then say things like "if the American people are so stupid that they would vote for Bush, they deserve everything they get. Or we hear mean-spirited and ugly little references to "cleaning out the gene pool" of stupid people."

Take care Sammy

Good luck !

"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."

Muddy Waters

continued...

"Regulation of corporations? No. we advocate give aways to the corporations, in the form of tax breaks and incentives, to "do the right thing." That is how we wind up with social disasters like the ethanol craze.

Workers' rights and taking care of the poor? Not a chance. We blather about "personal responsibility" and "free markets" and the "law of supply and demand."

Rebuilding our public agricultural system? No, we favor "organic choices" - a libertarian and free market solution only available to the well off and pampered few.

The people will say "but we are against the war!" One problem with that - there is no "war" to be against. Saying that we are "at war" is a right wing argument, a way to manipulate and deceive the public. If we say we are "against" it, then we have acknowledged that "it" is real and exists - we have reinforced the most potent theme the Republicans have going for them. We are not at war - our government is occupying a country for the benefit of a handful of corporations, for the benefit of the wealthy and powerful few. That is exactly the same thing the government is doing here. The difference is that the Iraqis are resisting this total domination of their lives and their country by corporations, while we are too weak and cowardly for that and are rolling over for it.

Would the "war" be over, and could we all then celebrate if the Iraqis did roll over, and aspire to turn their country into happy little consumer suburbia with corporations calling all the shots? The violence would be over - the obvious organized state-sponsored violence, that is.

These are just a few of thousands of such examples of our disconnection with the people and with reality.

The reason that the public does not support us, to the extent that they do not, is not because they are conservative politically. It is because we are far too conservative politically. It is not that we are too radical - we are not radical enough, by a long shot."

First thing I seen when I saw it land
Cats jumped out and they formed a band

Flyin' saucer rock and roll, flyin' saucer rock and roll
I couldn't understand the things they said
But that crazy beat just a stopped me dead

Well the little green men, they were real hep-cats
Rockin' and rollin' doin' their crazy flats
They brought out a sax and they started to blow
They brought out the drums and they started to roll

Well, I come out a-hidin' and I started to rock
Little green men tought me how to do the bop
They were three foot high, hit a few bars
Started rock and roll all the way from mars

Why All of Our Efforts Won’t Stop the Attack on Iran

...
Hizbollah’s rapid seizure of the Muslim sections of Beirut, accomplished with little resistance, may have been deliberately provoked by the U.S.-backed quasi-government of Lebanon when the latter shut down the party’s private communications network.)

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, according to Giraldi, was the only senior official present urging delay. That suggests that the military is not enthusiastic about a widened war in Southwest Asia, but that the other regular members of the NSC (Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley as well as President Bush and Vice President Cheney) are willing to provoke just that.

They will do what they do with the solid backing of Congress, the presidential candidates, and the mainstream press which if history is our guide will for a time shape shockingly malleable public opinion. Yes, I fear that we (most of us) will be fooled again.

The Congress has passed near-unanimous resolutions against Iran, endorsing the administration’s unprecedented designation of a component of a nation’s military as a “terrorist organization.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be on board the program. Recall how after the Democratic victory two years ago she capitulated to AIPAC by stripping from a military spending bill the requirement that Bush seek Congressional approval before attacking Iran. (That was after she’d pointedly declared that Bush-Cheney impeachment hearings were “off the table.”

And after Rep. John Conyers, head of the House Judiciary Committee and sometimes maverick, bitterly disappointed those pinning their hopes on him by going along with the Democratic leadership’s line. And after the Democrats had made it clear they weren’t serious about ending the war they’d been elected to end—showing us how very well the democratic system works in this country.)

Speech on Iran-US relation at MIT

by Brian H. Appleton (source: CASMII) - Sunday, May 11, 2008

...
I am here on a mission to make love not war…and why would I not try to save a country I love and a people I love, who showed me only kindness…IRAN…from bombardment, by supporting this film designed to win over American hearts. The main hero of this film is an American by the name of Tobb Del’Oro, who was a non governmental, self appointed goodwill ambassador to Iran. The film is a tribute to his leadership and provides his death with new meaning. It is also a tribute to Farzaneh, the incredibly loyal tour guide and to all the Iranian people.

Mr. Bush has alluded to Iran as part of the “Triple Axis of Evil” and to starting World War III over Iran, Mrs. Clinton has used the words “obliterate Iran.” To my knowledge, Iran has not bombed any other country or started any wars for the past 100 years, it defended itself in an 8 year “silent war” in which a million young Iranians died fighting Iraq armed by the US government. Iran has no proven nuclear weapons program, is a member of the NPT and has cooperated voluntarily with UN inspectors and yet we see the president and all three presidential candidates saber rattling because Iran might be thinking about it…while her neighbors who are not members of the NPT are full of nuclear weapons.

The town of Boston is where the spirit of 1776 started, it is where the Boston Tea Party took place, it is where we threw off the yoke of tyranny and our Republic was born. Surely we must be able to relate to a people who want a choice other than a monarch or a mullah. Columbia University ridiculed Mr. Ahmadinejad. Perhaps he is not as polished or as sophisticated as we would like. Perhaps he does not want to be a US puppet. That shouldn’t be a crime.

I believe that we the people of both America and Iran do not want a war and we deserve better leadership.

The Iranian people are a very kind and generous people especially towards foreign visitors…they always extend a helping hand…even in times of natural catastrophe it is not “every man for himself.” This film tells the story of their character.

I give you Jahangir and his film Bam 6.6, which is not only a tribute to Iran but to all of our common humanity for celebrating what is the very best in us. Thank you Jahangir for your leadership and for showing us what HOPE and COURAGE look like.

Families will make case for vaccine link to autism

By KEVIN FREKING, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Families claiming that a mercury-based preservative in vaccines triggers autism will challenge mainstream medicine Monday as they take their case to a federal court.

Two 10-year-old boys from Portland, Ore., will serve as test cases that determine whether the children and their families in similar situations should be compensated. Attorneys for the boys will attempt to show the boys were happy, healthy and developing normally. But, after being exposed to vaccines with thimerosal, they began to regress and show symptoms of autism.

Thimerosal has been removed in recent years from standard childhood vaccines, except flu vaccines that are not packaged in single-doses. The CDC says single-dose flu shots currently are available only in limited quantities. In 2004, a committee with the Institute of Medicine concluded there was no credible evidence that vaccines containing thimerosal caused autism.

ya A.!

before dawn every morning,

Autism is a crippling disease. I don't know much about it though.

I assume there are different levels of severity.

=========

Autism is a brain development disorder that impairs social interaction and communication, and causes restricted and repetitive behavior, all starting before a child is three years old. This set of signs distinguishes autism from milder autism spectrum disorders (ASD) such as Asperger syndrome.[2]

====================

I talk to several people (on the net) that have Asperger's and they seem OK. Seem.

===========

Asperger syndrome (pronounced /ˈæspɚgɚ ˌsɪndroʊm/, also called Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's disorder, Asperger's or AS) is one of several autism spectrum disorders (ASD) characterized by difficulties in social interaction and by restricted, stereotyped interests and activities. AS is distinguished from the other ASDs in having no general delay in language or cognitive development. Although not mentioned in standard diagnostic criteria, motor clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported.[1][2]

Asperger syndrome is named after Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger who, in 1944, described children in his practice who lacked nonverbal communication skills, failed to demonstrate empathy with their peers, and were physically clumsy. Fifty years later, AS was recognized in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10), and in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) as Asperger's Disorder

I can see why

a person might not want to communicate in this reality...

A little more about Aspergers (which I probably have :/ )

As of 2006, no studies addressing the long-term outcome of individuals with Asperger syndrome are available and there are no systematic long-term follow-up studies of children with AS.[3] Individuals with AS appear to have normal life expectancy but have an increased prevalence of comorbid psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety that may significantly affect prognosis. Although social impairment is lifelong, outcome is generally more positive than with individuals with lower functioning autism spectrum disorders;[1] for example, ASD symptoms are more likely to diminish with time in children with AS or HFA.[63] Although most students with AS/HFA have average mathematical ability and test slightly worse in mathematics than in general intelligence, some are gifted in mathematics[64] and AS has not prevented some adults from major accomplishments such as winning the Nobel Prize.[65]

Children with AS may require special education services because of their social and behavioral difficulties although many attend regular education classes.[3] Adolescents with AS may exhibit ongoing difficulty with self-care, organization and disturbances in social and romantic relationships; despite high cognitive potential, most remain at home, although some do marry and work independently.[1] The "different-ness" adolescents experience can be traumatic.[66] Anxiety may stem from preoccupation over possible violations of routines and rituals, from being placed in a situation without a clear schedule or expectations, or from concern with failing in social encounters;[1] the resulting stress may manifest as inattention, withdrawal, reliance on obsessions, hyperactivity, or aggressive or oppositional behavior.[52] Depression is often the result of chronic frustration from repeated failure to engage others socially, and mood disorders requiring treatment may develop.[1]

===================

Simon Baron-Cohen has argued that AS and high-functioning autism are different cognitive styles, not disabilities, and that a diagnosis of AS/HFA should not be received as a family tragedy, but as interesting information, such as learning that a child is left-handed. According to Baron-Cohen, "people with AS/HFA might not necessarily be disabled in an environment in which an exact mind, attracted to detecting small details, is an advantage."[5] Tony Attwood argues, "the unusual profile of abilities that we define as Asperger's syndrome has probably been an important and valuable characteristic of our species throughout evolution."[81]

So

Why does Israel have to occupy Palestine?

And so...

Beats me, Bob...

I wonder when's the last time anyone asked the government there that question...

Any one remember when this blog...

and AAR was new? there was a feeling, maybe it was only my own delusion...but a feeling that if we had good excdhange of ideas we might be part of a greater solution.; a solution this country needs more than ever.

But somewhere along the line we got bogged down with our own bullshit. I am as uch to blame as the next guy...I remember pioneer (what I thought as) `bold new directions' for the blog....trying to express ambigious moods and whims indirectly through lyrics, pictures...etc...

as often as not, you are more likely to encounter youtube videos than news...When was the last time someone researched a subject and that subject ended up being used on the show?

Hell, I wouldn't doubt if there are some regular bloggers who haven't listened to the show for months, years maybe...

should that be a requirement?

I don't think so, but...maybe it would have helped us retain a focus...a focus that would be helpful to Sam and his carreer?

Once again, I'm as much to blame as anyone, if there is really any blame to be had.

But, maybe we should re-evaluate why we are here?

I'd like to think I'm here to exchange ideas...or am I here just to kill time?

I don't know, it's hard to say.

I do value our unique community

but, I do wish we could focus our energies...maybe we can make a difference?

"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."

what kind of difference?

Saving the world would be a good start?

I don't know...I'm in the middle of a depression...been so for weeks.

this kind of mood is better suited for burning everything down and starting over...

not so good for making real change. just a vague feeling that I can do better.

maybe we all can do better.

but the last thing I want to do is set a bunch of rules that no one will follow anyway.

I'm just dissatisfied and, probably, taking out on everyone else.

I hear you Chubby Bubba

But, right now I am dead sober.

And that is not condusive to thinking.

To tell the truth, I would like to see Sam over at Nova M. Seems like they are trying to pick up where AAR left off.

But on the good side: My meds should be arriving tommorow.

Then I will be able to think.

And I like to think a difference is being made. There are alot of angry Americans.

I mean, look, if you were to ask 1000 peeps under the age of 30 if they trust their Gov. or if they think we should cut military spending and increase social spending, I reckon the results would be mighty refreshing.

Speaking of USED TO

I USED TO be solution oriented...just not any solution you wanted to hear...

I have never written the words I hate America

From Dissident Voice

Max Shields said on May 8th, 2008 at 3:32 pm #

On this I agree with Rich. Obama is right in the pocket of the DLC. So, the conversation between him and McCain are fait accompli.

The double talk about if you wage a cogent argument concerning the DLC/Obama Repub-lite is “fascist leftist” is itself fascist DLC.

We can all call one another names. The point, the most direct point is posed by Rich. And I quote: “lack of evidence from Obama supporters as to WHY they would vote for this DLC/Corporate candidate - and call him progressive..”

The supporters are at least two fold: young who have yet to discern the rehashed DLC talking points and seem to be going at this as a one and done horse race; the other are so-called Dem progressives that while they are regularly marginalized by the Party, “hope” springs eternal that they can infiltrate and convert the Party. It’s a total delusion. They don’t understand centers of power and how that will never allow this “conversion” from within.

Let’s be frank, Obama is of the system, and a vetted DLC member. There is nothing substantial to differentiate him from Bill Clinton, Al Gore (2000), John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton. Many of these are actually (voting record) to the left of Obama.

So, I sympathize with Rich’s point. It’s central to collapsing US economy and the ensuing hell it will reign on middle and lower income people throughout the country. This makes these candidates a waste of time regarding the fundamental changes which they are bound to ignore because of their benefactors and the centers of powers which will continue to pull the strings regardless of who sits in the Oval Office.

Is it imaginable that Obama if faced with a Depression could reinvent the system. I don’t see evidence of that, but necessity can sometimes be the mother of invention, but hardly a natural change agent.

Sketch from a Morro Bay clothing designer...

I bet the answers would be exactly the same as they were 20 or 30 years ago.

I believe people are basicaly good. but there are a lot of powers that be which end up dividing, conquring and ruling us.

but, it appears that the pendulum is returning to center. and I believe great changes can be made in the next few years if we stay positive and don't give up...

"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."

solution:

Stop the corporate pillaging.

Look, that is the fundamental problem in this Nation.

The problem is the predatory capitalism and the ideaology that goes with it.

damn this blog needs a spellcheck.

Personally, I think the entire corporate structure is wrong.

I dont think its right that you can build a company, make it run, work there for fourty years, yet you own nothing. You are making someone else rich.

That is where the Unions and the Gov are supposed to come in.

Well, the Unions have been stomped out quite a bit.

And the Gov. has become no less than management's enforcers.

The main role of Gov should be to protect the people from exploitation .... not encourage it.

People need to stop sympathizing with their bosses and stop pretending they are part of the investment class. THEY DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOU!

Autism

I know two families who have to care for an autism member, and another with Asperger. The daily grind of daily life and having to keep emotions in check can get to be an incredible burden, although nobody would ever give it up. Although Asperger Syndrome can appear differently for different people, the boy i know with it simply appears to act without conscience, almost cruelly at times. He simply cannot connect with anyone in many ways.

That family is where I first heard the idea that mercury was causing autism. They realized the truth about it all fairly quickly as well. Regrettably the families in this suit, if it's another like the ones that have gone before, will fail and they will feel like the system is against them.

-seldom go the way we want-

I don't believe that.

Maybe we all do make differences by believing the different

things and ways that we do?

what are the alternatives?

I've gone through three cycles of getting rid of stuff. (just saying.)

Right now I'm sensitive to how it seems most people lie to themselves (not talking about the blog) and others, just out of habit. There was a post a while ago about bullshitters being different from liars. Maybe to a lie detector, but bs is not the truth. People that are not accustomed to using truth can not find the essence of a problem. (just saying.)

I'm not here for a social network, I want to exercise my mind. The blog is also a good place for developing social skills, which I am lacking and for the social network. The bloggies that read, absorb and then write something are the ones I consider my peers. When someone writes a post that catches my attention I push myself to be a good enough thinker and writer to respond or make a post of my own.

I've been subject to depression over the passed years. This is what I learned about depression last year. 'Doesn't matter how depressed you are, you can always get more depressed.'

For my purposes this blog works better when it is not so popular. When the groupies have gone I think it is better.

Ever heard of the write in? THAT is my choice at the moment because of my party affiliation...so just because I can..guess what I'm going to write in now...

don't sweat the small stuff!

(or most of the big stuff)

Yeah Alice

I listen to audiobooks. I read articles off the internets.

But for the most part my attention span is too shot to focus on reading novels etc.

I do love me audiobooks though :)

Im listening to this now:

I'd vote for siestas

and mandatory toys in all cereals. No more of this "mail in three proofs of purchase" bullshit.

But i would settle for a world where my cereal issue above becomes the biggest concern we face.

eya James!

"No matter how cynical I get I just can't keep up"

Lily Tomlin

As my commute has grown to an hour each way

i've come to looooove audio books. And podcasts, even ones by crappy authors. And old radio shows. I recently got a hold of a ton of old Goon Show episodes, and while the comedy usually doesn't hold up, their jaz band does. ;-)

Bob, if you have some server space somewhere, i can give you a list of what i have, in case you might want some.

groupies?

nubies may be a better description.

most people here are sincere.

What do you read, my lord?

HAMLET

Words, words, words.

What is the matter, my lord?

Between who?

LORD POLONIUS

I mean, the matter that you read, my lord.

Demonoid.com is where I get all mine.

If you want jbennett I could give you an invite code.

There is a HUGE selection. All torrents.

my short take...

The powers that be run both parties.

They've chosen obama because he is actually more corporate than hillary and he would appeal to "radical" (lol)

Mccain is merely being presented as a false choice aka a decoy.

There is only one issue that will keep us from degenerating into a fascist state by 2012 and that's the economy.

Mentioned a few times in the past that it was a planned meltdown didn't.I ?

As the economy gets worse you'll see true radicalism and then calls for more "security" to.combat homegrown "terrorists" and if not enough ppl bite they'll arrange a few incedents themselves.

There's a lot of money riding on there being a rapture and israel becoming the center of world government...ludicrous perhaps but so is not believing in evolution.

Do the math...who will be pres in 2012?

poor wc sj

Just, for me, when there are not so many voices all at once the exchange of ideas works better.

I was thinking:

If Sam goes to Nova M. That would be quite a lineup.

Sam 3-6
Randi 6-9
Malloy 9-12

Thats how Id do it. Then if we could get Thom in there at 12 -3 and maybe Maron at 9-12 that would be quite a lineup indeed!

"As the economy gets worse you'll see true radicalism and then calls for more "security" to.combat homegrown "terrorists" and if not enough ppl bite they'll arrange a few incedents themselves."

The optimistic part of me "the majority" thinks that that boat might have sailed for em. They fucked that schtick all up with their phony color codes etc..

I think people have caught on to that little game.

Sure not all the way. However, I know plenty of peeps that I can talk openly too about 911 being an inside job. I think MOST of the country knows we were lied into war. And more importantly, I think most Americans know they are being shafted, what with the gas prices, healthcare etc...

I think the approach will be to try to give us just enough to prevent massive dissent.

However, If we start demanding real change, that would be a major cog in the machine.

Reccomend Richard Farina's book:

"Been down so long it looks like up to me"

and when they paint the car

Make dam sure they drape the engine with some masking paper to keep the overspray off that nice detailing.

Make sure it's on the work order...

see what i mean by multi-branched

streams of conciousness,

effortlessly flowing and mingling?

not much forcing, more like relaxing into it.

Not even that big

just a 318, the most common mopar engine from what i can tell. And easiest to work on (even my daughters would help). I might just get an Earl Scheib job, i miss that sleepy look in his commercials: "I can paint any car for ninety nine, ninety fiiiive... zzzzzz" Now the bottom rung is $250 or so, but this might end up being a rattle-can finish. We'll see what we can do. I used to do good flame jobs in art school with spray cans, but flames just don't match anything from this era.

Good point!

I'll be sure to do that (covering the engine). Now i'm just getting a feel for how much i can smooth it down and enjoying what i can do with a tiny bit of bondo. An I need to add a hood scoop; nothing huge, but i have a small one.

If you and your brother are free next weekend, we have a car show here in Petaluma next weekend. Petaluma is where most of the principal photography for American Graffiti was done, so there's an here event every year. And a lot of cruising.

Scallops

and diagramerring.

Nah eff the rattle cans.

slam a cheap paint job on the outside

(baby blue) get a quart of paint the same color to

do the firewall and inners, and paint on top of THAT paint job...

(take ya 300 bucks worth of rattle cans anyways)

for you car guys - sm / sj

[mmr : ) hanging in there - not too much longer I think]

Something I learned working in the fine arts bronze foundry. [where you assemble bronze art work by tig welding the various parts together - matching the artists surface texture to make the welds invisible.]

Something you may find useful.
How to sand [for instance] a compound curve.
Use a cross hatch pattern. This overcomes the natural tendency of the shoulder-arm-hand to always repeat a motion.
90 degree cross hatching evens out the highs and lows.
Repetitive motion - the highs and lows of the surface stay in the same relationship.

So the technique would be over a given place on a surface, three strokes all in one direction, and then three strokes at 90 degrees. [say for example with a sanding block, you end up with an area that has been cross hatched equal to the area of the sanding block.]

Just go the category selection and select audiobooks, their is also genre subcategories.

For what it's worth, I HIGHLY recommend the Dark Tower series by Stephen King ;)

Best fiction I've ever read.

Anyway, I am gonna hit the hay.

take care everyone

and dont expect...

Me to rave about who should and should not be president at this time... I'm more of the mind that there is a big lesson to be learned that no one could convince you of until you see it for yourselves.

Sometimes you just gotta let the kid fuckup.

I will give this advice though to both obama and hillary supporters...start building a serious third party now while you have a chance... You can file this with my investing in seeds advice from years past.

thanks Bob

naw bob...

They want massive dissent... There's nothing more efficient than slave labor and well it is all about money for some.

Check the prisons and the work being done by prisoners if you need a better clue.

Where do you see the economy in 4 yrs?

yea sj

I don't know about car paint. Just "surface." I would take some bronzes to a mirror finish and any imperfections, or ripples, in the surface would show up in the reflection.

getting back to the garden

reading up thread (not the car part)
this song came to mind

I came upon a child of god
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going

And this he told me
Im going on down to yasgurs farm
Im going to join in a rock n roll band
Im going to camp out on the land
Im going to try an get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe its the time of man
I dont know who l am
But you know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

By the time we got to woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
