Obama has said he found religion through Wright in the 1980s and consulted him before deciding to run for president. He prayed privately with Wright before announcing his candidacy last year.

During the 1984 presidential campaign of Jesse Jackson, Jackson referred to New York City as "Hymietown" in a discussion with a black reporter. Though Jackson thought he was speaking off the record, the reporter printed the quote. In response to the charges of being a "Black Hitler", Farrakhan responded during a March 11, 1984 speech broadcast on a Chicago radio station:
"So I said to the members of the press, 'Why won't you go and look into what we are saying about the threats on Reverend Jackson's life?' Here the Jews don't like Farrakhan and so they call me 'Hitler'. Well that's a good name. Hitler was a very great man. He wasn't great for me as a Black man but he was a great German and he rose Germany up from the ashes of her defeat by the united force of all of Europe and America after the First World War. Yet Hitler took Germany from the ashes and rose her up and made her the greatest fighting machine of the twentieth century, brothers and sisters, and even though Europe and America had deciphered the code that Hitler was using to speak to his chiefs of staff, they still had trouble defeating Hitler even after knowing his plans in advance. Now I'm not proud of Hitler's evil toward Jewish people, but that's a matter of record. He rose Germany up from nothing. Well, in a sense you could say there is a similarity in that we are rising our people up from nothing, but don't compare me with your wicked killers." [16]
Farrakhan was censured unanimously by the United States Senate for the speech.

SAN DIEGO – The contrition, tears and poor health of Thomas Kontogiannis were not enough to spare him a prison sentence of eight years and one month for his role laundering bribe money for former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham.
On Friday, U.S. District Judge Larry Burns also fined the wealthy Long Island financier $1,050,000 – twice the value of the bribe that Kontogiannis laundered through fraudulent mortgages that allowed Cunningham to buy a $2.4 million mansion in Rancho Santa Fe.

Cunningham is serving an eight-year, four-month sentence in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy and tax evasion. Brent Wilkes, a former defense contractor from Poway, was convicted of 13 charges of bribing Cunningham and was sentenced to 12 years, though he is appealing his convictions.
Kontogiannis, 59, pleaded guilty 15 months ago to a single charge of money laundering. The deal included a cap on his prison sentence of 10 years – a move that the prosecutor on the case, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Forge, admitted in court Friday was a mistake.

That is because after pleading guilty, Kontogiannis continued issuing millions of dollars in fraudulent mortgages and has continued to profit by them, Forge said.

Teen Marijuana Use Linked to Later Illness

Self-Medication, Especially for Depression, Raises Risk of Mental Problems, Study Says

Teenagers who smoke marijuana put themselves at risk for future mental illness and higher rates of depression, according to a report to be released today by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Although fewer teens overall are smoking marijuana, the report said, there is growing concern that those who do, particularly those who view the drug as a way to cope with depression, do not understand its consequences. It also is not clear whether their parents, who might have indulged when they were younger, understand the risks, experts say.

The report, whose release coincides with the start of Mental Health Awareness Month, said studies show links between marijuana use and risk of mental illness later in life, and that use could increase the risk by as much as 40 percent.

Teenage girls who smoke marijuana are particularly at risk, the report said. It found that teen girls who smoke marijuana daily are more likely to develop depression than those who do not.

The report also found that teenagers who smoke marijuana at least once a month are three times more likely to have suicidal thoughts than non-users. It said that even though the percentage of teens who are depressed is equal to the percentage of adults who say they are depressed, teenagers are more likely to seek solace in marijuana or other illicit drugs.

"Significant numbers of teenagers are self-medicating,'' said John P. Walters, director of the White House office. "They're turning to marijuana to reduce [symptoms of depression], and [the depression] is getting worse."

The report said that too often teens do not seek treatment for their depression, choosing instead to seek relief by smoking marijuana. They do not realize that pot can make their problems worse and can set them up for serious health consequences, it said.

Susan Lydick, coordinator of the Youth Suicide and Depression Initiative at the Fairfax Partnership for Youth, said the report offers new information to parents and the general public -- groups that are often unaware of the interplay between drug use and depression.

Walters said advances in technology allow researchers to better understand the effect drugs such as marijuana have on brain function. The research being done today "is breaking new ground in showing the role marijuana use is playing in depression," he said.

So, where' is everybody?

It contains ricotta cheese, lemon, and sugar, all in a tart. There's little more needed in a dessert in my opinion.

Crust

* 1 3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
* 1/4 sugar
* 1 tsp vanilla sugar (or 1 tsp vanilla)
* Salt, pinch
* 5 Tbsp unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
* 1 egg yolk
* 6 oz. Limoncello (water will work if Limoncello cannot be found)

For the filling

* 4 Large lemons
* 2 eggs
* 1 1/4 sugar
* 16 oz Ricotta Cheese
* 2 Tbsp powdered Sugar

Starting with the dough ingredients, mix together the flour, sugar, vanilla sugar and salt together. Add the butter and egg yolk, and work together by hand. Add an ounce of the limoncello and incorporate that into the dough. Repeat until you get the consistency to the point where you can shape the dough into a ball.

Roll out the dough between two pieces of parchment paper until it is slightly larger than your tart pan (I used my 9 inch tart pan, but it could have accommodated the ten inch). Line the pan with the dough and place in the refrigerator to chill for at least one half of an hour.

Pre heat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Zest two lemons and set the zest aside. Get the juice from one of the two zested lemons. Also set aside.

In a glass bowl, cream together the 2 eggs with 3/4 cup of the sugar. Fold in the ricotta cheese, and mix well. Fold in the zest and lemon juice.

Pour the filling into the chilled tart shell. Place in the oven and bake for forty five minutes. Remove and allow to cool.

Slice the remaining two lemons into thin slices, and quarter those slices.

Meanwhile, in a skillet place the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar with 10 tablespoons of water. Mix and bring to a boil. Add the lemon slices and lower the heat to a simmer. Allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Place the sugared lemon slices on the tart before serving. Dust with powdered sugar.

Serves 12

Yesterday I discovered an astonishing audio recording of a sermon, by controversial McCain endorser Pastor John Hagee, in which Hagee elaborates on his view that Hitler and the Nazis were divine agents sent by God to (with gruesome inefficiency it would seem) chase Europe's Jews towards Palestine.

In his 2006 book "Jerusalem Countdown", Hagee proposed that anti-Semitism, and thus the Holocaust, was the fault of Jews themselves - the result of an age old divine curse incurred by the ancient Hebrews through worshiping idols and passed, down the ages, to all Jews now alive. In the sermon Hagee also clarifies a point, on his theological views, that has long concerned me.

Let us review: A former CEO of Halliburton became Vice-President of the United States and oil prices have risen to all-time record levels. Halliburton's subsidiaries rake in record profits from government military no-bid contracts.

A former oil man (though a failed one) became President of the United States and Exxon is posting the world's greatest quarter-over-quarter profits in history.

Not one justification made by the President or the Vice-President for the war in Iraq has proved accurate.

The U.S. economy has been on a decline throughout the tenure of the present administration.

Is it any wonder that 89% of Americans believe that the most widely recognized Bush administration blunder, the war in Iraq, is responsible for their economic distress?

Think of the Iraq war as symbolic of dozens of administration failures that, when combined, explain why George W. Bush is the worst president ever.

I am amazed, too. But I learned my lesson when I first saw Mike Tyson fight: I said, "No one will ever be able to beat that beast. He will die a champion."

My amazement was not sustained as expected. I'm a lot more cautious after being burned.

Earlier this morning, Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) was rushed to the hospital in Cape Cod, Massachusetts with the “symptoms of a stroke.” Kennedy, who is 76, was transfered to Mass General Hospital in Boston after being treated in the emergency room.

In October, Kennedy had surgery to repair a nearly complete blockage in a major neck artery. The discovery was made during a routine examination of a decades-old back injury.

The hourlong procedure on his left carotid artery -- a main supplier of blood to the face and brain -- was performed at Massachusetts General. This type of operation is performed on more than 180,000 people a year to prevent a stroke.

The doctor who operated on Kennedy said at the time that surgery is reserved for those with more than 70 percent blockage, and Kennedy had "a very high-grade blockage."

Distinguishing between a seizure and a transient ischemic attack, TIA, often called a mini-stroke, can sometimes be difficult.

Seizures are little electrical storms in the brain. They tend to be brief; an occasional one can happen to anyone even without a prior history of seizures, especially if there has been some prior brain trauma.

A stroke is either ischemic -- a clog in a blood vessel -- or hemorrhagic, bleeding in the brain. Hemorrhagic ones are very rare. Kennedy had the carotid artery surgery to try to prevent the ischemic type. A stroke kills brain tissue; how much depends on how big it is and how long it lasts. Some people show no lasting effects; others can be partly paralyzed on one side or somewhere in-between.

"Sen. Kennedy was at high risk because he had surgery for an artery in his neck," said Dr. Wendy Wright, The Emory Clinic, Assistant Professor, Departments of Neurology and Nuerosurgery,

But she said there are a lot of things that can cause seizures, such as an infection or medication.

"Certain medications are known to cause seizures. A stroke can cause a seizure, a brain tumor or a head injury, or something in the brain itself," Wright said. "Common symptoms that we know about are falling on the ground, shaking and having confusion."
