When I was 8 or 9 years old, I acquired
a split beaver magazine. You can imagine
my disappointment when,upon examination
of the photos with a microscope, I found
that all I could see was dots.

"It was just a few years after the liberation of the [Nazi concentration] camps that David Ben-Gurion declared the founding of the Jewish State of Israel. We know that the establishment of Israel was just and necessary, rooted in centuries of struggle and decades of patient work. Ben-Gurion simply "declared" the state of Israel, and it appeared!! No mention here – or anywhere in the entire speech –of the dispossession of the Palestinians. Nor any mention of the role of imperialism and colonialism in the creation of the state of Israel.

On Goddessesand the 23 Enigma

As we began preparing for the present issue of North of Way, it became obvious that we would have to do something about the intriguing number 23. 23 was to be the issue numeral designation—as it was to follow 22. And many in the creative classes seem to be more than interested in the number. Movies, books, songs-- you name it! It is in the air. Fascination is abundant in the culture concerning 23. .

After a little research, we came upon the “23 Enigma,” a central belief of the Discordian religion. Basically, the 23 Enigma holds that, eventually, everything is connected to the number 23. Or, in the words of Robert Anton Wilson, “When you start looking for something you tend to find it...” Wilson has also said, more or less, that the 23 Enigma is an example of the tendency of seeing patterns and perceiving truths in most everything—given “sufficient cleverness”. The Wikipedia entry on Discordianism mentions that the 23 Enigma is examined in several works, including several by Wilson (Illuminatus Trilogy, etc.), Arthur Koestler’s Challenge of Chance, and the religious document Principia Discordia, In them, 23 is variously considered lucky, unlucky, weird, and sacred to both the strange gods of the Cthulu Mythos and to the Goddess of Chaos, Eris, who, herself, is the Matron of Discordianism.
Goddess Erin
There are, in fact, more than a few goddesses in the North of Way readership. And, more than likely, the closest among them to Goddess Eris is Erin, a driving force behind the Philadelphia, AFC-based Hot Glam/Dom Catholic School Girl aesthetic persuasion. Goddess Erin’s many projects include chronicling the activities of local outsider artists, such as the Great Bilal. This goddess also pursues a career as a legitimate suburban costume hero, fighting crime and keeping her community safe and harmonious. Quite the opposite of chaos, don’t you think? All hail Goddess Erin. Enigma 23 solved!

The Blast was an anarchist newspaper published by Alexander Berkman from 1916 through 1917. Conceived of by Berkman more as "revolutionary labor paper" than a strictly anarchist paper, it focused on California and the national labor movement. When Berkman left his position as editor of Mother Earth, he moved to San Francisco and began work on his own publishing project. The magazine lasted 29 issues, and covered subjects such as Emma Goldman and Margaret Sanger's arrests for birth-control advocacy, Pancho Villa, and the trial of labor agitators Tom Mooney and Warren Billings. The magazine was shut down in June of 1917 when Berkman was arrested for encouraging resistance to the draft. In 2005, all 29 issues of The Blast were re-published in book form by AK Press.

Emma Goldman? They used her resistance activities as a pretext to deport her. Sent her "back" to Russia. This reminds me of the recent practices by the government to send convicted felons back to home countries that they had not lived in since toddlerhood. This reversion started with Clinton's "Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act".

This is the second time in a week where Goodman’s editorial judgment has left me deeply disappointed. First was the refusal to cover -- yet again -- the AIPAC conference, with all its implications for US politics and the Middle East. In a year when even the mainstream media was finally forced to take notice (with Jon Stewart of the Daily Show going so far as to refer to the lobby group as the 'Elders of Zion', Democracy Now appeared alone in missing the irony of three presidential candidates pledging to fight the domination of lobbyists in Washington genuflect to the most powerful of them all.
