Siegelman calls on Pelosi to support subpoena of Alabama Republicans at Netroots Nation
Streaming brought to you by Air America!
In a nearly hour and half conversation
exclusively streamed at Air America, Gov. Don Siegelman called on Nancy
Pelosi to encourage the House Judiciary Committee to force Karl Rove's
testimony in regard to his questionable prosecution by US attorney's in
Alabama. Siegelman also called on Pelosi to encourage the Judiciary
Committee to call for testimony from Alabama Republican operative
William Canary and Bob Riely, Jr., son and former campaign manager for
Alabama Gov. Bob Riely. Canary and Riely were both on a conference call
with Republican Attorney Jill Simpson who has given sworn testimony
that the two specifically discussed Karl Rove's involvement in and the
political nature of the Siegelman prosecution. Canary and Riely would
be unable to claim any sort of executive privelege if called to testify
before Congress. Pelosi will be appearing at Netroots Nation tomorrow

McShame predicts surge failure--
(CNN) — John McCain said Friday he expects the presidential election this fall will increase the occurrence of "spectacular" terror attempts in Iraq.
Speaking at a General Motors facility in Warren, Michigan, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate touted the decrease of violence in Iraq, but said Al Qaeda is not yet defeated there.
"I predict that they will make an attempt as we get in to the election season to make more of these spectacular kinds of attacks which they're still capable of doing," he said. "The suicide bombers, et cetera, would not surprise me and we've already found out that they're going to try and step up their attacks and try and do things in a more spectacular fashion so that they can erode the support of the Maliki government."

According to a study published in Science last year, the Southwest region of the United States will enter permanent drought by 2050, and that's being optimistic. The seven states dependent upon the Colorado River Basin -- Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and California -- will most likely war over what remains of its diminishing water resources. The region's thirsty population will also be beset by rampant firestorms, as portions of the snowpack that remains bypass the liquid stage and evaporate into thin, dry air.

Using Bombs to Stave Off War
BENNY MORRIS
ISRAEL will almost surely attack Iran’s nuclear sites in the next four to seven months — and the leaders in Washington and even Tehran should hope that the attack will be successful enough to cause at least a significant delay in the Iranian production schedule, if not complete destruction, of that country’s nuclear program. Because if the attack fails, the Middle East will almost certainly face a nuclear war — either through a subsequent pre-emptive Israeli nuclear strike or a nuclear exchange shortly after Iran gets the bomb.

White House Announces
White House Announces ‘General Time Horizon’ For Iraq Withdrawal; Is It ‘Conceding Too Much To The Enemy?’
When Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki first requested a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, the Bush administration swiftly shot down his proposal. “Timelines tend to be artificial in nature,” a Pentagon spokesperson remarked. “[W]e’re looking at conditions, not calendars here,” the State Department remarked.
But today, the White House has seemingly embraced a “general time horizon” for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq. The AP reports:
Iraqi officials, in a sign of growing confidence as violence decreases, have been pressuring the United States to agree to a specific timeline to withdraw U.S. forces. President Bush has adamantly opposed a timeline, and the White House said Friday that the timeframe being discussed would not be ”an arbitrary date for withdrawal.” […]
The White House says the two leaders, in a conversation on Thursday, agreed that the accord should include ”a general time horizon for meeting aspirational goals, such as the resumption of Iraqi security control in their cities and provinces and the further reduction of U.S. combat forces from Iraq.”
The White House’s concession today comes after years of resistance to even considering the prospect of a timetable for withdrawing troops, particularly when it came from Congress. Some lowlights of the administration’s stubborn rhetoric:
“Why would you say to the enemy, you know, here’s a timetable, just go ahead and wait us out? It doesn’t make any sense to have a timetable. You know, if you give a timetable, you’re — you’re conceding too much to the enemy.” [Bush, 6/24/05]
“Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq.” [Undersecretary of Defense Eric Edelman, 7/16/07]
“I believe artificial timetables of withdrawal would be a mistake. … I will strongly reject an artificial timetable withdrawal and/or Washington politicians trying to tell those who wear the uniform how to do their job.” [Bush, 4/23/07]
“The…attempt to micromanage our commanders is an unwise and perilous endeavor. It is impossible to argue that an unconditional timetable for retreat could serve the security interests of the United States or our friends in the region.” [Vice President Cheney, 4/13/07]
The White House maintains that agreement “doesn’t reflect a shift in the U.S. position.” An Iraqi government spokesman, Ali al-Dabbagh, reiterated that an agreement should have the goal of “decreas[ing] the number of American forces in Iraq and later withdraw them.”

MoveOn at Ten
The Nation Christopher Hayes
This year, MoveOn turns ten. News of the organization's advanced age tends to elicit the same startled response as word of a childhood star's divorce. But more important, the anniversary serves to highlight just how far the organization has come. What started as a simple one-sentence petition hastily posted to the web has evolved into the most readily identifiable group in the vanguard of a revived progressivism, with a membership that exceeds 3 million. Capable of dominating a news cycle with a single ad and raising millions of dollars with a lone e-mail, MoveOn pioneered an entire approach to conducting politics through the Internet that has been replicated and spun off across the country and around the globe, an approach that, as the Obama campaign has dramatically demonstrated, has permanently transformed the landscape of American politics. And yet the roots of its success remain largely misunderstood.

McCain surrogate: ‘The Muslims’ are ‘going to kill us.’
During a phone call with Florida reporters today that was arranged by the McCain campaign, McCain surrogate Col. Bud Day defended the war in Iraq by arguing that “the Muslims have said either we kneel or they’re going to kill us“:
One of John McCain’s fellow POW’s in Vietnam defended the war in Iraq, saying, “The Muslims have said either we kneel or they’re going to kill us.”
In a phone call with reporters arranged by the McCain campaign, Colonel Bud Day added: “I don’t intend to kneel and I don’t advocate to anybody that we kneel, and John doesn’t advocate to anybody that we kneel.”
This isn’t the first time that Day, who was a member of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, has spoken on behalf of the campaign. Last month, Day was featured on a campaign conference call to pushback against comments Gen. Wesley Clark made about McCain. (HT: Greg Sargent)

McCain missed every single Afghanistan hearing his committee held.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), “the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has attended zero of his committee’s six hearings on Afghanistan over the last two years,” ABC News reports:
A review of the Senate Armed Services Committee hearings as listed on the committee Web site for the past two years reveals that McCain’s committee has held six hearings that included the word “Afghanistan” in the title or Central Command — which overseas U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
McCain missed them all.
The McCain campaign said the senator’s “previous foreign policy experience make up for his recent lack of attendance at hearings.”

"Isn't it about time we...nationalize the commons?"
New Hampshire saved by nationalized oil.
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Two years ago, New Hampshire refused to accept heating oil from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the pro-Castro U.S. critic who once called President Bush ``the devil.'' But with fuel prices rising, well, free oil is free oil.
With the state's blessing, New Hampshire residents will be receiving some of the fuel this winter.
New Hampshire becomes the last state in the Northeast to embrace the offer.
``A lot of people have said, `We need help and we value any help we can get,''' said Amy Ignatius, director of New Hampshire's office of energy and planning.
The oil giveaway will be managed by Citizens Energy, a nonprofit organization set up by former Massachusetts Rep. Joseph Kennedy to help the poor stay warm. But the state energy office plans to help Citizens publicize the aid and sign up fuel-oil dealers.
But the idea galled some New Hampshire Republicans, including Sen. John Sununu, who called it a ``disgrace'' and an attempt at grandstanding by Chavez, and Democratic Gov. John Lynch squelched the effort.
This year, though, ``the state's role is to make sure people are aware of the program,'' Lynch spokesman Colin Manning said.
Chavez's supporters defend the heating oil program as another example of a generous deed by a president leading a socialist revolution for the poor.

Community College
S'what I do. I teach English (various, but mostly comp 1) in community college, and I love it.
Yeah, at first I was pretty appalled that some of the students walking into the classrom had made it out of highschool into college. Then I began to recognize that the public school system in mainstream places are essentially concerned with oppressive indoctination, fomenting failure and shame for the purpose of maintaining a docile workforce. You're encouraged to feel ashamed of the "wrong" way of speaking you've learned from your family.
Yes, mhappenow, the homeschooled kids come in with more confidence and usually more "acceptable" (whatever that means) writing skills than the whipped and language-fearful public school kids.
The fun is to help people use the use the languages they have to say the things they must (and we must). Then, possibly help with learning to copy-edit for "acceptability," a kind of bilingualism, like teaching your kids not to swear near some people.

Qatar becomes biggest investor in Barclays
The Gulf state of Qatar became the biggest investor in Barclays on Friday, after the British bank raised 4.5 billion pounds (8.9 billion dollars, 5.7 billion euros) with a share issue.
Barclays said in a statement that existing shareholders had snapped up 19 percent of the shares, while the remainder was bought by Asian and Middle Eastern investors in line with an agreement sealed last month.
Following the cash call, the state-run Qatar Investment Authority owns about six percent of Barclays, while a fund representing the interests of Qatar's prime minister has just under two percent.

What Was McCain Thinking?
http://www.dailykos.com/hotlist/add/2008/7/18/16550/3804/main//
DETROIT (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain commented on Friday on the unannounced timing of a high-security trip by Barack Obama to Iraq, saying he believed his Democratic rival was going this weekend.
But McCain's spokesman said the Arizona senator knew nothing about Obama's schedule. Obama said last month he would go to both Iraq and Afghanistan soon. But his campaign has given no dates, seeking to cloak the trip in a measure of secrecy for security reasons.
"I believe that either today or tomorrow -- and I'm not privy to his schedule -- Sen. Obama will be landing in Iraq with some other senators" who make up a congressional delegation, McCain said at a Republican fund-raiser.

(...)According to Arnebeck, Connell "[D]esigns websites and he manages the information technology. Interestingly, he's done this for the Bush campaign of 2000 and the Bush campaign of 2004. Simultaneously, he was doing IT work for the State of Florida in 2000, and for the office of the [Ohio] Secretary of State in 2004.
Indeed, Arnebeck believes that Connell's role in the suit, at least at first, will be that of a witness. "He, by virtue of his involvement in a variety of these roles that we're concerned with --- as a witness, he can provide a perspective. He's the one person who can bring a great deal of information together to better inform folks of what happened and what some of the vulnerabilities are and where some of the data security breaches may have occurred."
One of the more frightening aspects of Connell's work is that his company, Gov Tech Solutions, was the first private company to be allowed to put servers behind the firewall of the Congressional computer systems. This led to him creating and managing several powerful Committee IT networks, including those for the House Intelligence Committee, the Ways and Means Committee, the Judiciary Committee, the Ethics Committee, and the House Committee on Rules. Of course, it is completely possible that the firewall could have been created with secret security gaps that can be exploited to hack into any congressional computer. If that has happened, every computer in any senate or congressional office is subject to hacking by Bush/Republican operatives.
Currently, Connell is running the IT operations for the McCain campaign. Isn't that a comforting thought…
A Must
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If i recall correctly
I believe Connell also made it possible to bypass the Congressional firewall enabling eavesdropping on Congressional e-mail...

Colombian government cancels referendum
July 18th, 2008 ·
The Colombian government canceled the referendum about a possible rerun of the 2006 presidential elections, now the crisis between the country’s Supreme Court and the Government seems to be solved.
Bogotá and Colombia’s highest court clashed after the Supreme Court wanted the legality of the elections investigated. According to the court, the elections may have been illegal, because it took the bribery of at least one congressman to make it possible for Colombian President Álvaro Uribe to run for office again.

Human rights groups accuse the government of exaggerating the security threat to provide cover for a crackdown on dissent.
In a separate announcement, the government warned that foreign entertainers who have engaged in activities that "threaten national sovereignty" will not be permitted to enter the country.
The restrictions come after the Icelandic singer Bjork shouted "Tibet! Tibet" at the end of her song Declare Independence at a concert in Shanghai in March. Officials reacted angrily, saying her outburst "broke Chinese law and hurt Chinese people's feelings".
In a statement posted on its website, the Ministry of Culture warned: "Any artistic group or individual who have ever engaged in activities which threaten our national sovereignty will not be allowed in."
The rules state that performers should not "whip up ethnic hatred", "violate religious policy or cultural norms" or "advocate obscenity or feudalism and superstition".
Agencies responsible for bringing the artists to China will be banned for two years if the rules are violated.

FYI -- During the Nuremburg Trials -- it was 'aggressive war'
The charges used against the Nazis after World War II were basically two:
1. Did the defendent plan an aggressive war?
2. Did the defendent wage an aggressive war?
Violate either and one was guilty.
Violate both and one was guilty punishable by death.
We MUST hold Bush, Cheney, the Neocons and their minions responsible for PLUNGING this nation into two WARS OF AGGRESSION (which is what a 'preemptive' war IS) BEFORE they succeed in plunging us into yet another one.
As of today I say two WARS OF AGRRESSION because there have been two GEORGE W. BUSH WARS OF AGGRESSION:
The first was against Afghanistan on the pretense that that nation was harboring the perpetrator of the 9/11 attacks. That is where it is necessary to realize that 9/11 WAS a Neocon "Pearl Harbor" (and all we lack are new legitimate government fact-finding investigations to determine whether that "Pearl Harbor" style event desired by the Neocons was "allowed" to happen or was an "inside job"). The pursuit of Osama bin Laden was never more than a pretense for taking Afghanistan to its knees long enough to begin the process of regional natural gas, oil, gold and opium seizure, development and extraction, a pretense Bush eventually abandoned once these objectives were reached.
The second WAR OF AGGRESSION was against Iraq under the manipulation of data and the OBVIOUS LIE that Saddam Hussein was a party to the 9/11 "attack".
CITIZEN Petitions RECOGNIZING the reality of these two BUSH WARS OF AGGRESSION must be made and taken as far as possible to establish that we, the people of the United States, are not a party to these heinous acts by Bush et al(that is, we are not "good Germans" as the saying goes), and that we will not tolerate more of the same -- whether from John McCain (if the election is stolen by some means obvious or hidden) or from Barack Obama (if he is duped into further incursions as was Democrat Lyndon Johnson regarding Vietnam).
If we are to salvage anything from this time when Bush & Company perpetrated grave injustices on the people of the Middle East and Central Asia and the American Citizenry at home -- it must be that we RECOGNIZE and REJECT all WARS OF AGGRESSION waged in the name of the American people.
music makes loose control!!!! woop!

Speculation Money Moving Out Of Oil?
Stay tuned. The recent weakness in oil speculation could be a brief dip in the graph but it could also be signaling a shift in the trend.
Just a thought: If the Democrats take all three houses in the 2008 election, and if the Democrats ramrod solar and/or alternative energy tax credits/incentives into the system, we could see the speculation money that moves around (and recently moved into oil) move into the alternative energy market. The money cache is massive and could fund rapid production and growth in the alternative energy sector.
(I know. I'm dreamin'...about plugging-in my high-end golf cart for a sun-fueled trip to the sun-fueled grocery store after leaving the warmth of my sun-fueled house.)
Fuck Conservatism. Socialism has a place in the capitalistic market, and always has. Ask China if directing investment money is advantageous to a society.
If we wait for "market forces" to build a better mouse trap, it will be powered by an internal combustion engine fueled by ANWR oil flowed through a sabotage-vulnerable Alaska Pipeline, and if you submit a late payment, your interest rate will automatically rise to 23%.
Regulate, regulate, regulate. The downside is slower growth. The upside is circumventing another mortgage crisis which has wiped far more wealth from the ledger than over-regulation ever could...especially if you believe that the mortgage (capital) crisis encouraged investment money to shift to oil speculation...which has wiped another shitload of wealth from the ledger.
If Conservatism were a steam engine, they would stop oiling the moving parts to cut costs in an effort to improve the bottom line. And they would boil dirty water.
Oh...and fuck Libertarians, too. Let them live in a cave with bin Laden.
McSame doesnt need someone to sink him for him... he is plenty c

Heard that Bowie named his son Zooey after the character in the book. But changed up the name to reflect the last name "Bowie" Zooey = Zowie Bowie

I met the CEO of Air America
and Phillipe Collins. They got an angry ear full from me. At one point I even said I was not kicking them in the nuts because we were in full sunlight view in a public location. They left understanding that I would not support Air America unless Sam is on the air.
This was after the meet up an the Irish pub which was a blast. Sam must have brought in over dozens patrons to come to Netroots.
Atrios was there. Nancy from Dallas Air America was there. And senior AAR management was showing up as we left. pffft.
Yes we is.. :)
Oh is that how Bowie got that name? Neat..
I'd love to hear about infopeople when you have the time...
Three cheers for Fernando..

True, McCain punches holes in his skiff everyday. But the corporate media just airlifts him another pump.

The GOP Threatens To Sue Its Own Supporters Hotlist

So Sue Me!Republican Change
The great minds at the Republican National Committee are once again demonstrating their transcendent grasp of marketing, finance, and public relations.
In an action so preposterously witless as to scramble the common cranium, the GOP has sent a "cease and desist" letter to CafePress citing trademark infringement on the part of sellers using the term "GOP" or the elephant logo.
Attorney Paul Alan Levy of Public Citizen is representing CafePress and wrote this on the CLP Blog:
"[W]e might ask why the RNC has chosen an election year to try to suppress speech about the Republican Party, especially since many of the images are highly favorable to their cause. Many of the CafePress users appear to be Republican grassroots activists. Is this the right year for RNC staff members to start going after their own supporters?"
Asking the RNC why they are trying to suppress speech is like asking why tobacco companies add nicotine to cigarettes - the only way you can get people to consume either one is to artificially manipulate their behavior. Tobacco companies do it with addictive chemicals. Republicans do it with message control and censorship.

Good for you!!!! Standing up to those idiots. I am sure that Sam was embarassed but inside was very very touched.
There is nothing on AAR during the week worth listening to - esp when it comes to driving around in the car...but at least I am getting to enjoy a bit of music again right?
Good work 'nando!!!

RE who is who in the pic?
Fernando is first on the left, I am peeking out next to him. Fernando is, of course, as interesting in person as online. I didn't get the names of the next two, son and mom, but I did get website info so I can learn about how the water powered car turns out. After a bit, I offered my prime seat to another arrival and was privileged to meet several other "lurkers" from Austin back in the shadows, as well as Nancy of Dallas. (You bet I will sign up for the dallasairamerica.org newsletter.) I met other people for the first time who also have city-subsidized home solar panels. (Ours just got hooked up the week before last.)
AND I got Sam's DVDs! (Like everybody else.)
I had to leave rather suddenly when my recently strained neck started to spasm. Got home in time to prevent a headache.
Sam attracts great people! Thanks for the meetup! Thanks for the nachos!

I thought that was you. You only gave me your real name, not your blog name.
The Prince of Darkness was walking out when I was and was very helpful in backing me up when I got down right rude to Charlie and Phillipe shortly after meeting them. He's a good guy to have on your side :)
