CBS helps McCain cross the street
CBS has done it's best to earn a merit badge this week.
After all, when John McCain doesn't know the difference between Sunni and Shia, thinks Social Security is a disgrace, thinks 100 years in Iraq is just dandy, gets his econmic advice from the architect of our mortgage meltdown, thinks the Iraq government is strong but not strong enough to oust an occupier, doesn't know how to use even email.... why shouldn't CBS edit an interview with him to keep him from looking like a fool?
If his base doesn't help McCain .. the terra-rists will win!

Thanks Sam
I was just looking for that clip.

My email to evening@cbsnews.com
I am saddened and shocked by your decision to re-edit and whitewash Sen. McCain's response to Ms Couric's question, where he alters the 'Anbar Awakening' timeline to slam Sen Obama, thus further touting the success of the troop surge where little exists.
Are you still all so cowed by Dan Rather's unfortunate incident with the Bill Burkett documents that you will now violate ethics to do some kind of penance to the Republican Machine?
We need news, ethics and journalism. You are no longer in this business. I pains me. I grew up with Cronkhite. Now I agree with my mate when he says you should shutter your news division and just run and Associated Press feed like every other lame corporate sewer outlet does.
I am seldom moved to write this kind of thing. Today, I weep.

Amazing, since it is common knowledge that the corporate media "loves" Obama, and Obama's old friends like the Jesse Jackson and the Reverend Wright:
The Media Gets a Tingling Up Its Leg - John Kass, Chicago Tribune
"Meanwhile, the Democrat Obama is treated quite differently. He's the Mr. Tumnus of American politics, the gentle forest faun of Narnia, with throngs of reporters trembling to sit with him at tea and cakes, like the little girl in the C.S. Lewis story, as he plays the flute, chanting "We Are The Change We've Been Waiting For." And nobody laughs.
You don't laugh because you can't make fun of Obama. The ground would swallow you whole."

In S. Florida, Lieberman seeks votes for McCain
U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman spent two days courting South Florida voters by touting Republican presidential candidate John McCain's foreign policy record.
During his South Florida trip, Lieberman targeted Jewish and Hispanic voters, stumping for McCain at a town hall meeting Sunday at the Brigade 2506 in Miami, where he emphasized McCain's patriotism and commitment to continuing the embargo against Cuba.
McCain ''would like us to have better relations, but not by abandoning principles,'' Lieberman said.
Lieberman's visit coincides with Obama's multiday tour of the Middle East -- his first to Iraq since January 2006.
''I'm glad he's making this trip to Iraq and Afghanistan,'' Lieberman said while traveling from Hollywood to Surfside on McCain's Straight Talk Express bus. ``I'm wishing he had gone earlier because he was making decisions -- actual life and death decisions -- about what policies we should follow without talking to the generals.''

"Washington Madam" story still percolating
July 22, 2008 -- SPECIAL REPORT. "Washington Madam" story still percolating
Although a concerted effort by U.S. judge for the District of Columbia James Robertson, Justice Department prosecutors, and the office of Vice President Dick Cheney seeks to place a clamp on any further revelations about the late "Washington Madam" Deborah Jeane Palfrey and her Pamela Martin & Associates (PMA) escort service, WMR has obtained further details about the case.
Palfrey allegedly took her own life by hanging herself in a utility shed next to mother's Tarpon Springs, Florida home on May 1, 2008. However, according to informed sources, the official Tarpon Springs police report on Palfrey's death is incomplete and is still being written, almost three months after her reported "suicide."
WMR has also learned that Palfrey told some close associates that she attempted to kill herself at her Orlando condominium by overdosing on pills three weeks prior to her hanging death. However, there was no official report of the Orlando incident filed with authorities.
WMR has also learned additional details of the nature of the services offered by some of PMA's escorts. WMR has obtained information that two escorts, one based in Maryland and the other in Virginia, were highly-sought-after dominatrices who specialized in performing sexual acts for clients who suffered from forms of sexual dysfunction, including paralysis. WMR reported in the past that Dick Cheney, when the chief of Halliburton, availed himself of the services of PMA escorts and was particularly fond of "toilet sports." The dominatrices employed by PMA sexually performed for what can be described as masturbatory spectator clients. Counted among these were some of Washington's most powerful politicians and business elite.
From the beginning, according to WMR sources close to the case, the White House, Justice Department, and top lawyers in Washington tried everything possible to get Palfrey and her PMA escorts off the front pages of the papers to prevent any further collateral damage from her federal indictment for fraud-related charges. The move to quash any more revelations about the case, such as those that enmeshed Senator David Vitter (R-LA), former US Agency for International Development director Randall Tobias, and Cheney military strategy adviser Harlan Ullman, also involved having U.S. Judge Gladys Kessler removed from the case. Kessler, who preceded Robertson as trial judge in the Palfrey case, was reportedly the recipient of unprecedented pressure from the White House and other quarters after she made a couple of rulings that were favorable to Palfrey.

Palfrey's assets were frozen by the Justice Department but now, sources familiar with the case, report that a secret deal is being worked out between Judge Robertson, the Justice Department, and Palfrey's estate lawyer to unfreeze the financial assets, reported to be around $1.5 million and allot a portion of them to Palfrey's next-of-kin. All this, according to WMR's sources, is to ensure continued silence in the case by all parties. As witnessed in the criminal case against former Enron chief Ken Lay, because his death occurred before prison sentencing, the case against him was dismissed and his assets were retained by his family. Dismissal of the criminal case against Palfrey would permit the civil asset forfeiture case to proceed with much broader discovery options, including depositions of some of PMA's principal clients, named and unnamed. However, Robertson has prevented that from occurring by keeping the details of the disposition of Palfrey's assets secret.
The silence also reportedly extended to the U.S. Navy. After U.S. Naval Academy supply officer Lieutenant Commander Rebecca Dickinson was called to testify in the Palfrey trial in April, and revelations that Dickinson worked for Palfrey as an escort who used the name "Renee," the Navy placed the officer, who was mere months from being eligible to retire, on administrative leave. WMR has now learned from a reliable source that Dickinson has been permitted to quietly retire from the Navy. Perhaps that is because the phone number of retired Army Colonel Ronald Roughead, an official of the defense firm SAIC (Project Manager – Global Media Development; Director, Network Services, Iraq Media Network [Iraq wide]; Bureau Chief, Southern Bureau, Iraq, IMN; Instructor/Mentor, US Army CGSC (Command and General Staff College); US Defense Attache for Kenya and the Seychelles) appeared on Palfrey's December 2005 phone records that were released prior to her "suicide" and pursuant to a court order by Kessler that permitted their release. Roughead's brother happens to be Admiral Gary Roughead, the Chief of Naval Operations and member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
WMR can also report that at least one CIA agent, billed as a "private investigator," was involved in limiting further damage in the Palfrey case and trial.
Robertson decided to send the Palfrey case to the jury without calling any defense witnesses and after a series of e-mails between him, the prosecutors, and the defense team. Although he promised to make public those e-mails, Robertson has yet do do so.
The asset forfeiture case, separate from the criminal case against Palfrey, was about to get worrisome for certain quarters when Palfrey's former civil asset forfeiture attorney, Montgomery Blair Sibley, formally gave notice that he was going to subpoena convicted GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff, fired U.S. Attorney for Maryland Tom DiBiagio (fired because he was focusing on the role of Maryland Republican Governor Bob Ehrlich, Jr. and his senior staff as customers of PMA and their involvement with "poker parties" in Washington involving escorts and CIA officials, including Director Porter Goss and Executive Director Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, as well as defense contractors Brent Wilkes and Mitchell Wade and Representative Randy "Duke" Cunningham), and convicted former Baltimore Police Commissioner and Ehrlich Maryland State Police Superintendent Ed Norris.
Sibley was suspended by the DC bar and was removed from the Palfrey civil asset forfeiture case by Judge Robertson. Sibley recently appeared at a National Press Club news conference representing Larry Sinclair, a Minnesota man who claimed to have had two sexual encounters with Barack Obama. Sibley told WMR that his taking on of that case and the wearing of his trademark kilt is to stay as highly visible as possible. He said he has been followed by unknown individuals on a number of occasions since Palfrey's death, including when he has been with his young son, and fears that he could meet with foul play.
Sibley is now writing a book about the Palfrey case and the misconduct of the Justice Department in the matter. He wishes it to be known that he is placing the manuscript outside the United States and is soon going abroad to complete work on the book, which, he assures, will contain some explosive revelations about the Palfrey case.

McCain's dubious fundraiser in Buffalo
July 23, 2008 -- McCain's dubious fundraiser in Buffalo
GOP presidential candidate John McCain attended two fundraisers in Buffalo on the evening of July 21. The affairs netted him some $1.3 million in contributions. The first was a $10,000 per plate dinner at the home of former U.S. ambassador to Malta Anthony Gioia. The second was a $1000 minimum reception at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
Attending the McCain events in Buffalo were ethics-tainted GOP Congressman Tom Reynolds, who played a role in the cover-up of the page scandal surrounding ex-Florida Republican Representative Mark Foley, and Lawrence Reger, a one-time partner of Buffalo-based James (Harry) Williams in ventures called Mader Capital Inc. and Envirosure, both waste management companies. Envirosure was charged with filing false waste disposal records. Williams was involved in a suspicious steel mill project in Connecticut with later-jailed Republican Governor John Rowland. Gioia is a funder of the neocon front group Freedom Watch, which supports a continued U.S. military occupation of Iraq.
Also feting McCain was Kathy Russert-Hughes, the sister of the late NBC News managing editor and Buffalo native Tim Russert.

Very glad to hear this. Remarkable how this story fell down the memory hole. Reminded of this last week while reading about the suspicious plane crash of U.S. Representative Nick Begich. I met Mark, his son, who looks to replace mad Ted Stevens, several times in Kodiak. Anyway, I'd guess half of the so-called reported accidents and suicides of politicians are in fact murders. From inside, however, most people can only imagine such things happening somewhere else.

Little-reported case points to more possible Israeli espionage
July 23, 2008 -- Little-reported case points to more possible Israeli espionage against the U.S.
As Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama finishes his trip to Israel, hardly one major media outlet, save for a usually predictable one, has reported on the case of Abraham Lesnik, a Boeing aerospace engineer in the Los Angeles area. Earlier this month, Lesnik pleaded to a single count of keeping classified defense information in his home. Lesnik specialized in anti-missile technology for Boeing. The Justice Department prosecutors indicated that they would seek a sixty-three month prison sentence for Lesnik. In a July 10 article by Josh Gerstein in the pro-Israeli newspaper, The Sun of New York, Robert Litt, a former Justice Department Criminal Division chief opined that the reported sentence for Lesnik was "ludicrous and . . . patently inconsistent." Lesnik, who received his doctorate in physics from the University of Chicago, the neocon citadel, is due to be sentenced on October 6, 2008.
Lesnick, a resident of Valley Village in Los Angeles, was accused of taking top secret and secret documents to his home on a thumb drive from a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) at the Boeing facility in El Segundo. Lesnik's work was reported to involve the super-secret National Reconnaissance Office, the agency that handles America's spy satellites. Lesnik admitted to possessing 11 classified documents in order to work on them at home.
Lesnik was charged with violating the Espionage Act, and, although his attorney claims he was not committing espionage form a foreign country, ABC News reported in 2006 that federal investigators were worried that classified information from Lesnik could have ended up in the hands of foreigners. Court documents also pointed to a foreign bank account held by Lesnik in an unnamed country.
The Sun article reports that Lesnik was a supporter of GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul and that he wrote on a website called Meetup.com that he speaks German and Yiddish.
The Sun article also mentions that similarities between the Lesnik case and that of former National Security Agency (NSA) analyst Ken Ford, Jr., convicted of taking two boxes of classified information home on his last day of work at NSA. However, the case against Ford, a vendetta conducted by neocons in the Justice Department and White House, for Ford's NSA signals intelligence reports indicating no proof that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction, never named a foreign intelligence agency and the entire case was based on perjury conducted by a dodgy FBI confidential informant and Assistant U.S. Attorney David Salem. Ford unjustifiably received six years in prison.
The Lesnik trial follows the recent indictment of another Israeli spy. On April 24, 2008, WMR reported: "The arrest of of former U.S. Army engineer Ben-Ami Kadish by the FBI on charges of providing classified information, including nuclear data, to Israeli spy Yosef Yagur is part of a wider Israeli espionage ring operating deep within the U.S. government for some four decades. The Israeli espionage and agent-of-influence ring has penetrated U.S. intelligence and the U.S. nuclear command-and-control chain of command. Kadish was a mechanical engineer who worked at the U.S. Army's Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center at the Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, New Jersey. Kadish's handler was Yosef Yagur, assigned as the Consul for Science Affairs at the Israeli Consulate General in Manhattan."
Lesnik's attorneys will ask for probation and no prison time for Lesnik. The government side is cautiously avoiding the name of the country that federal investigators believe is behind the operation: Israel.

Obama Faking It
By Maggie Gallagher
NBC's Andrea Mitchell was the one journalist with the courage to name what she was actually seeing happen: Obama faking even being interviewed by the press.
"Let me say something about the message management. He didn't have reporters with him, he didn't have a press pool, he didn't do a press conference," either in Afghanistan or Iraq, noted Mitchell on the air. Instead Obama manufactured "what some would call 'fake interviews,' because they are not interviews from a journalist," Mitchell went on.
Mitchell understands very well that this contrived image management is powerfully all to Obama's political advantage. He's shameless when it comes to managing his own image. "Politically it's as smart as can be," she conceded before noting the big obvious truth nobody else in the media was bothering to expose: "We've not seen a presidential candidate do this, in my recollection, ever before."
The whole Obama campaign is something we've never seen before -- at least not executed to this level of perfection with a media willing to go along because, well, so many of them want it to succeed.
Poor John McCain. He's so last-century. Still living in a world in which deeds matter, policies matter, what you would actually do with the power entrusted to you matters.
In the op ed the New York Times refused to print (which appeared in the New York Post this week instead), McCain lays out the facts in Iraq:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/07/obama_faking_it.html
I would like to repeat the fact that I hate the US MSMedia!
Did anyone catch ABC's interview with Obama on his trip to Iraq the other day?
The questions they ask... it makes me want to scream.
Possible link between top Democratic foreign policy adviser and
July 23, 2008 -- Possible link between top Democratic foreign policy adviser and Bosnian Serb war criminal?
Croatian journalist Domagoj Margetic is reporting that recently-captured Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, indicted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague for war crimes during the bloody Bosnian civil war, is the subject of a document purporting to lay out a 1996 secret agreement whereby Karadzic was paid $600,000 by Bill Clinton's chief Bosnia negotiator and later U.S. ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke.
Holbrooke has been mentioned as a possible Secretary of State or National Security Adviser in a Barack Obama administration.
The authenticity of the Karadzic-Holbrooke has not been verified but Margetic is known to obtain stories that result in severe repercussions, including a scandal involving Liechtenstein bank accounts of Hypo Alpe Adria Liechtenstein AG used to launder money for Croatian politicians and government leaders. The Austrian-based Hypo Alpe Adria Bank has also been accused of laundering funds for neo-Nazi causes in Croatia and Serbia.
Karadzic was arrested on July 21 in Belgrade. The wanted war criminal, who is charged with the massacre of 8,000 Bosnian men and boys in Srebrenica, changed his appearance to look like a Santa Claus-like figure. Karadzic practiced alternative medicine using the name Dr. Dragan Dabic and the nickname of "David."
If the document proves valid, it will serve as additional evidence of collusion by members of the Clinton and Bush 43 administrations in fomenting turmoil in the Balkans. Neocons Richard Perle and Douglas Feith were architects and principals of the Bosnian Defense Fund that was aiding the Sarajevo Muslim government at war with Karadzic's Bosnian Serbs. Perle and Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine Albright were major supporters of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), now in charge of independent Kosovo.

New details emerge about GOP-linked child kidnapping and prostit
July 23, 2008 -- UPDATE 1X. New details emerge about GOP-linked child kidnapping and prostitution ring
Evidence continues to surface that Omaha, Nebraska was "ground zero" for a child kidnapping and prostitution ring that had its tentacles extending into the top echelons of the Republican Party in Nebraska and the Bush 41 White House.
Noreen Gosch, the mother of 12-year old Johnny Gosch, who was kidnapped from his West Des Moines paper route in 1982 and enslaved by the child abduction cult largely based in Omaha, said that in August 2005, she received a call from an older man who claimed that he knew about brutal things that took place with children in the Hummel Park area of Omaha. The man said that he was also aware of unmarked grave sites where the bodies of children had been buried.
In September 2005, a man showed up at an invitation-only meeting at which Mrs. Gosch spoke. The man later was identified as one of two photographers that GOP African American Franklin Credit Union chief Lawrence (Larry) King used to photograph abducted children. On July 23, 2007, WMR reported: "Lawrence King, a rising star in GOP politics, was sued in 1999 in federal court by Paul Bonacci, claiming compensatory damages. Bonacci charged that King was part of a network, with links to the Bush White House, that engaged in child sexual abuse, Satanic rituals, and mind control. King did not contest the charges and a federal judge awarded Bonacci $900,000 in damages. King was convicted and imprisoned on unrelated fraud charges related to Franklin Credit Union." King is now reportedly working in Fairfax County in northern Virginia.
WMR has written extensively about the role of U.S. diplomats and the State Department in procuring children for prostitution for VIP clients, especially in Southeast Asia. WMR can now report that based on information received from reliable sources, the State Department played a significant role in the procuring of children from Southeast Asia in the late 1980s and early 1990s for purposes of child prostitution in the United States. This was at the height of the "midnight tours" of the White House call boys scandal that rocked the Bush 41 White House and was extensively reported by The Washington Times. The Omaha/Franklin scandal also involved the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha and Boy's Town, the famous Catholic orphanage in Omaha.

New details emerge about GOP-linked child kidnapping and prostit
[cont'd.]
WMR's sources report that during the Bush 41 child prostitution scandal, aircraft contracted to the State Department, routinely flew children from Southeast Asia into Offutt Air Force Base outside of Omaha. The entire planes would be declared "diplomatic pouches," which meant that there were no records -- immigration, military, or otherwise -- with a record of the passengers being brought into the country. The State Department lawyer who oversaw the legal arrangements for the trafficking of children into the United States through the "diplomatic pouch" contrivance was described as a "Mr. Jones" by a source familiar with the operation.
From Offutt, groups of Asian children were dispatched to two locations, Washington, DC and New York City, for purposes of prostitution. WMR has learned that among the clients of these child prostitution services were some of America's top politicians, media celebrities, and Wall Street financiers.
UPDATE 1X: WMR has also learned that during the Bush 41 presidency, a luxurious home on Wyoming Avenue in northwest Washington, DC that belonged to GOP lobbyist and former ABC News correspondent Craig Spence, was used to bring together abducted children trafficked through Omaha with high-level politicians and other VIPs. A top GOP official in the Bush 41 administration, who used the moniker "Madam Pete," was involved in the liaison between Spence and Omaha's Lawrence King.

BREAKING: McCain LA Oil Rig Visit Cancelled, Huge Oil Spill Near
UPDATE: Could this have something to do with it?
The U.S. Coast Guard has closed 29 miles of the Mississippi River from New Orleans southward after a tanker and a barge collided, spilling more than 400,000 gallons of fuel oil into the river.
Tugboats hold up pieces of a barge after it collided with a tanker Wednesday in the Mississippi River in New Orleans.
The river, a major shipping route between the Midwest and Gulf of Mexico, could be closed for days during the cleanup, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.
More than 30 ships already are queued up along the river, waiting to pass through the closed zone, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jaclyn Young said.
The Coast Guard has deployed 45,000 feet of inflatable booms to contain the spill and is lining up another 29,000 feet, but it could be days before the river is reopened, she said.
The accident left a sheen over 90 percent of the area, she said.
Probably not the backdrop the Republicans wanted for McCain's offshore drilling speech.

But .. anyway .. How about 25 Signs of Banking Insolvency?? [Though I will only list a few here .. you can click the ink to read the rest ...]
1. Paulson appears on Face the Nation and says "Our banking system is a safe and a sound one." If the banking system were sound, everyone would know it (or at least believe it). There'd be no need to say it.
2. Paulson says the growing number of troubled banks "is a very manageable situation." Here's the reality: There are 90 banks on the list of problem banks. Indymac wasn't one of them - until a month before it collapsed. How many other banks will magically appear on the list a month before they collapse?
3. In a Northern Rock moment, depositors at Indymac pull out their cash. Police had to be called in to ensure order.
4. Washington Mutual (WM), another troubled bank, refused to honor Indymac cashier's checks. It's ironic that customers pulled insured deposits out of Indymac after it went into receivership. It's also ironic that they would then want to deposit those funds in Washington Mutual - the last place one would want to put them.
WaMu eventually decided it would take those checks, but with an 8-week hold. Will Washington Mutual even be around 8 weeks from now?
5. Paulson asked for "Congressional authority to buy unlimited stakes in and lend to Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE)" just days after saying "Financial institutions must be allowed to fail." Paulson's obviously reporting from the 5th dimension; only in some alternate universe would his statements make sense.
6. Former Fed Governor William Poole says Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac losses make them insolvent.
The rest are at the link above .. all are pretty scary. : /

Lesbians coming from everywhere now!
ATHENS (Reuters) - A Greek court has dismissed a request by residents of the Aegean island of Lesbos to ban the use of the word lesbian to describe gay women, according to a court ruling made public on Tuesday.

Afternoon all
Was back in the hospital over night. Got sharp pains in my stomach, like an ulcer pain. Called the Doctor and he said to go to emergency. They held me over night and put me on an IV with no food and just ice chips.
This morning they gave me a nuclear stress test. This was not fun. They give you medicine that brings your heart rate up to simulate an attack and take photos of it, similar to a cat scan. Scary stuff.
Good news is there is nothing wrong with my heart but I have more medicine to take for my stomach. And I am now back at my place!
Guess I missed quite a bit of news. Trying to catch up now.
Popping in to say HELLO

Novak’s victim in worse
Novak’s victim in worse condition than first thought.
After Robert Novak struck a pedestrian in his black convertible this morning, news outlets reported that the victim suffered only “very minor injuries.” But D.C.’s ABC affiliate WJLA now reports that the pedestrian “is in worse shape than first thought.” The 66-year-old male victim “appeared somewhat incoherent, said the source who had seen the victim. The man appeared to have casts on his neck and back. The victim was X-rayed and a surgical team plans to evaluate him, the source said.”

Bad Cable Phone!
Approximately a year ago, I switched to the phone and internet service- provided by my cable company. At first, the phone service was pretty great. However, about 4 months ago, my phone line was completely dead. It has happened several times since. Sometimes there is a CB radio on the line. Today, I was talking with a friend who also has the cable phone service. All at once, her phone went dead.
The cable company has been out twice. It's better for a while, then pop!

A string of erroneous word choices is helping opponents make his 71 years a matter of age, not experience.
Photo: AP
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said “Iraq” on Monday when he apparently meant “Afghanistan”, adding to a string of mixed-up word choices that is giving ammunition to the opposition.
Just in the past three weeks, McCain has also mistaken "Somalia" for "Sudan," and even football’s Green Bay Packers for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ironically, the errors have been concentrated in what should be his area of expertise: foreign affairs.

Friends at the front desk made sure to help me out and brought me a few cans of coke, and dinner right away since they are too busy to send the usual person to the supermarket to pick up a case of coke for me tonight. So, I have all I need for tonight... they even brought me some of those single serving sized little containers of vanilla ice cream since they know that sometimes thats all I can manage to eat...they take very good care of me... but I was able to eat a chicken sandwich no problem before things got out of hand.

"Shooting Back" Cameras instead of guns...more effective
In January 2007, B'Tselem launched "Shooting Back", a video advocacy project focusing on the Occupied Territories. We provide Palestinians living in high-conflict areas with video cameras, with the goal of bringing the reality of their lives under occupation to the attention of the Israeli and international public, exposing and seeking redress for violations of human rights.
To view a sample of the materials, click here.
http://www.btselem.org/english/Video/Shooting_Back_Index.asp
"Shooting Back" works with families who live in close proximity to settlements, to military bases or at the sites of frequent army incursions. Settlers daily harassing a family in Hebron or attacking farmers in the South Hebron Hills, soldiers invading Qalqilya, daily life in the village of Yanun… these are just some examples of the material filmed by over 100 cameras that we have distributed to families throughout the Occupied Territories. B'Tselem has succeeded in airing this material on major Israeli and international news networks, exposing global audiences to the previously unseen
Citizen journalism – a phenomenon that has garnered much attention of late – is particularly relevant in the context of the Israeli occupation, in which various types of abuse occur on a frequent basis and impact the daily lives of Palestinians. The ever-present violations of human rights constitute the mundane, ongoing reality of military occupation and settler enterprise, and are too often overlooked.
B'Tselem also uses this footage as a powerful tool for filing complaints with the army and the police, and as supporting evidence in court cases. In the West Bank, victims of abuse by settlers or soldiers are often discouraged from lodging complaints by weighty bureaucratic obstacles. B'Tselem now uses video as one way to promote accountability and seek legal redress for Palestinian complainants.

Hightower on the lowdown...
Jim Hightower made the point towards the end of that interview that I've been trying to formulate all day to respectfully respond to those who have been posting in the past 24 hours that neither candidate is worth supporting and it's time to pack up and move on. No pun intended. ( Neither was the run-on sentence.)
As Jim so clearly stated, Obama is not on the right track right now but neither was FDR at this point in the game. He had to be persuaded after being elected to push for the New Deal.
Let's let this thought percolate for a bit.

Afghanistan equals Pakistan. A country nine thousand miles away with 175 million people. We lose. Beyond, Kucinich, hardly anyone gets the lesson of 911. Most of the world is sick of our empire and energy needs. Most of our confused and ignorant population is even sick of our empire. When Barack said:"... but more than that,we have to change the mindset that led to Iraq in the first place..," I thought he got it. I'm not sure now. I expecting another pathetic pander speech to AIPAC from Barack tomorrow while his visits the land of the "chosen."

========================================
Ghettodefender, this is what is making me look deeper and deeper into the Cyber Warrens of Information and Speculation the last couple weeks.
All the taxmoney that's beeen sucked out of Americans all these years has gone into plans and materials for not one 'Shock & Awe', but many. Where are all the regular U.S. citizens that want that? During the primary the polls showed the preference for peace, bringing the troops home, and getting back to the OVERDUE work needed on everything here at home.
Obviously Obama is not promoting himself as a new 'War President' for the sake of those who want the troops home.
And it doesn't seem like he's doing this for those who backed him in the primary and gave million$ to his campaign so he could zip passed Clinton.
And it isn't for winning over the rest of the citizenry who are fence-sitting or even for cajoling Bush's base -- since this scenario of becoming embroiled in the CENTRAL ASIA THEATER for years to come is a totally new scenario in the mainstream media and not one of the Moderates' OR Rights' hot-button issues.
It's hard to believe Obama's market research and FOCUS GROUPS made him think this is what will sell across the U.S.A. (although it appears that most people resist questioning the 9/11 Myth that appeared instantaneously on the morning of 9/11 -- like a new cereal, FEAR, in a box to read at the breakfast table, selling us 9/11 as an event carried out by a handful of odd ducks. NO, it wasn't even a real CRIME worthy of real LAW ENFORCEMENT INVESTIGATION and the Rules of Evidence (you see, no evidence means Bush gets to substitute torture to the point of making the detainees "vegetables" and "insane" so they couldn't tell you the Truth even if they knew the Truth!)-- so maybe the focus groups DID tell Obama "Yeah, it's okay to pulverize Afghanistan and even Pakistan to find one man, that Osama bin Laden guy, and THEN EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY AND THAT WILL MEAN WE'RE WINNERS AGAIN AND THE WORLD WON'T CARE THAT WE ARE COLD-BLOODED MURDERERS, TORTURERS, THIEVES, and IMPERIALISTS." Maybe their market research IS telling them the 9/11 Myth is alive and well....)
Obama's salespitch for war (and letting domestic spying continue) has arrived so unexpectedly, it too seems part of 'Shock & Awe'!!! (I've considered him a corporatist all along, and yet, now, even I'm flabberghasted by his stance for more militaristic response to this so-called 'war' on terror that is better addressed by LAW ENFORCEMENT (like they did in Spain! In Spain the terrorist bombers have already been caught, indicted, tried and sentenced! And yet, with the Bush Militaristic approach which Obama is embracing, innocents are still being held and tortured, still awaiting sentence in bizarre kangaroo Military Commissions court trials!
It looks to me like the only folks Obama has to impress and to whom he has something to prove are the POWER ELITE, the War Crimes Industry who want to continue to make war and Empire and so further multinational corporations' control of key areas on the planet. He looks like he's proving something to THAT bunch of war-mongers, who, for all we know, may be the seat of power that controls the privatized electronic voting system in this nation. (Has there been any headway in correcting the electronic tabulators for tallying votes at the end of Election Day, no matter what kind of ballots are cast?)

You can see the Republican shills heads exploding all over the place after this week with the McCain gaffe machine and the stellar Obama overseas trip. Apparantly Joe Scarborough just couldn't take it any more. Here's what he had to say this morning:
"Look let me tell you....and I know a couple of hosts ran this last night and made a huge deal because some liberal blogger picked it up. I will guarantee you the host that ran it, were waving their arms, had no idea whether the Sunni Awakening, or, or or, the surge began at the same time. They also, anybody that would argue that the Sunni Awakening would have survived in Al Anbar Province, without the surge, anybody that would make that argument is so ignorant of the facts on the ground in Western Iraq, in Al Anbar Province, and what the Sunni sheiks were doing throughout 2007, that they are too stupid to be on TV. And I hope they don’t carry that argument much longer because it is laughable."

Obama as a new War President
Nora, thanks for the info. I'm afraid you're right, but I'm with Obama till the end now. My loyalty now to Obama is driven solely by my hatred for these corporate whores that run our media. Obviously, McCain must be more appealing to them or they wouldn't go to all ends to help McCain. This CBS thing has really got me pissed. I remember also 24/7 coverage of Wright for literally six weeks. I don't have a lot of hope with Obama; but he is an academic and the media must fear him some(i.e. they are afraid of higher taxes.)

9/11 myth-building seemingly instantaneous...
The morning of 9/11, I watched the TV. At one point I remember walking back into the l.r. and the tidy rows of photos of the "Muslim" hijackers was being shown, and, in disbelief all I could say was -- How did they get all those pictures so quickly? If these were suspects, why weren't they being tailed? What's going on here?
So when I saw this video, I was excited that somebody else got the psy-ops quality of the information flow the morning of 9/11.

And, even though there is no proof of any kind, we still have the meme floating everywhere about those BOX-CUTTERS. Amazing how they did this to us. And now you can't even take a necessity of life - like water - onto a plane with you. Amazing progression of insanity flowing from a myth.

Air Force says no survivors of B-52 crash off Guam
HONOLULU (AP) - All six crew members aboard a B-52 bomber that crashed off Guam were killed, the Air Force said Wednesday as the search effort shifted focus from rescue to recovery of the crew and pieces of the wreckage.
The unarmed bomber crashed Monday during a swing around the island as part of Guam Liberation Day celebrations, marking the day when the U.S. military arrived to retake control of the island from Japan during World War II. The B-52 had been scheduled to conduct a flyover in a parade.
Monday's crash is the third for the military this year on Guam, a U.S. territory 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.

To: Secretary General of the United Nations, President of the United States of America. " We, the undersigned, oppose the fact that the people of Guam have not been included in the deliberations of the U.S. government and its elite partners regarding the scheduled transfer of 8,000 U.S. Marines from Okinawa to Guam as part of a major explosion of the U.S. military personnel population on Guam, now set at 35,000. This buildup will have enormous environmental, social, cultural, long-term economic and political consequences in our community. Currently, a host of issues i.e. radioactive contaminations that cause record-high rates of cancers and dementia-related illness have yet to be addressed by the same military now expanding its presence in Guam. The way in which the current military buildup is happening calls attention to a harmful power imbalance between the U.S. federal government and Guam, which must be addressed." Do Americans prefer myths to reality?
One answer is we need myths simply to hide reality. Thus, 'Manifest Destiny' isn't simply land theft or genocide. It is the creation of civilization. Or making passengers take off shoes, creates the myth of safety. In order to hide the fact, that there are easily a thousand ways a committed group could attack any US city any day.
Left, Right or Center...
[Time now for an editorial comment by a cranky old white guy....]
Too many people today are too polarized. I'm prolly among them, but I'm great at self deprecation so assume everything to follow is directed at myself as well. We villianize Obama for not being liberal enough, but we don't jump Naomi Wolfe when she works with the right at American Freedom Campaign or the whole mob at Stangebedfellows/Accountability Now Pac . I'm sure there are others.
The Center is not evil, it's just too fucking small. We all should be at the far left end of the Center and the reasonable Conservatives equi-distant on the right. Picture a 12" ruler. The first inch on the left should be navy blue. The last inch should be crimson red. The rest of us should be getting along in the middle. The very big middle.
Fuck a bunch of labels. All I want is peace and prosperity with equality.
The reality is either McCain or Obama will be the next President barring any bullshit.
The most profound statement to come from the mouth of Sam Seder is "Voting is a practical matter". It's best to heed those words.
Everyone wants to analyze, criticize, minimize, maximize, ostracize, categorize, demonize, idolize, etc. Fine, that's good, but save it for later. Let's get these fucking bastards out of the White House and ride Obama's ass to hell and back if we have to and turn this sinking ship around.
Amen. Now marvel at my first tomato to ripen.

To discover and assist grassroots movements in keeping threatened Progressive Talk stations on the air for their communities,
To assist grassroots efforts in re-establishing Progressive Talk stations where they have been canceled, or set up new Progressive Talk stations for markets not yet exposed to it, and
To act as a clearinghouse of information so that activists everywhere can come to the aid of threatened and canceled stations, and to also distribute tips and tricks so that any non-threatened station can be made less vulnerable by its supporters.

You are looking to forge a national community of Progressive Radio activists. You would like to come together and conspire with others who care just as much about securing the future of Progressive Talk as you do. You're not alone. Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Stephanie Miller, Rachel Maddow, Cenk Uygur, Richard Greene, Peter B. You've helped save Progressive Talk outlets.
Now give the Shows something to talk about!
NonStop Radio, together with your participation and support, promotes the continuation of the Progressive Talk format by saving and creating broadcast stations dedicated to Progressive Talk across the nation. But that's not the only way to promote the continuation of Progressive Talk. Give them something to talk about!
We all know that many of our favorite broadcasters can, in the words of Steve Earle, "talk the ears off the Statue of Liberty". What we need to do, however, is to make sure that what they say remains fresh and vibrant. Find a Progressive cause (or several), get involved with them and then CALL or EMAIL the Progressive Talk Shows you listen to and tell them all about it.
You can start by telling them about NonStop Radio, but DON'T stop there. NonStop Radio requires non-stop Progressive action, so take a look at the below list, pick one or more and get going! Be the radio you want to hear!

The Backbone Campaign
The Backbone Campaign is a grassroots effort to embolden citizens and elected officials to stand up for progressive values. We are expanding the political dialogue by providing creative tools for citizens and the progressive movement. Nero's fiddle is always played on McCain's birthday
Partying while the Katrina victims drown was revealing about the so called war hero John McCain. But in 2004 on his 69th birthday, his base came out to celebrate. And boy did they come out.
LET THEM EAT TARTS
By David Podvin

On August 30, John McCain hosted a lavish birthday party for himself at New York’s ritzy eatery La Goulue, a name that appropriately translates to “The Glutton”. Among the senator’s guests were General Electric employees Tom Brokaw, Tim Russert, Chris Matthews, and Gloria Borger; Disney’s Peter Jennings, Barbara Walters, Ted Koppel and George Stephanopoulos; and Viacom’s Mike Wallace, Dan Rather, Bob Schieffer, and Charlie Rose. Time Warner Chief Executive Richard Parsons attended, accompanied by his underlings Judy Woodruff and Jeff Greenfield. Also present were CBS News President Andrew Heyward, ABC News President David Westin, U.S. News & World Report publisher Mort Zuckerman, Washington Post Chairman Donald Graham, New York Times columnists William Safire and David Brooks, and USA Today columnist Walter Shapiro. The partygoers dined on lobster salad, loin of lamb, assorted wines, crème brûlée, lemon soufflé, and French tarts.
According to the Children’s Hunger Fund, eleven million American boys and girls go hungry each day, a tragic yet correctable situation that is entirely irrelevant to the well-fed aristocrats who decide what constitutes news. The attitude of this nation’s high profile journalists towards those who are less fortunate oscillates between indifference and contempt. Newscasts and investigative reports and opinion columns are larded with pompous superficiality designed to maximize attention on those who create them, while the plight of this nation’s lower class remains a topic considered to be largely unworthy of journalistic examination.

"Hear, hear"!
Hear hear
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hear hear is an expression that originated as hear ye, or hear him, usually repeated. This imperative was used to call attention to a speaker's words, and naturally developed the sense of a broad expression of favour. This is how it is still used today, although one can always vary one's tone to express different sentiments; the Oxford English Dictionary noted around the turn of the century that the phrase is now the regular form of cheering in the House of Commons, and expresses, according to intonation, admiration, acquiescence, indignation, derision, etc. It is often incorrectly spelled "here here".
As a parliamentary cheer, hear him, hear him! is first recorded in the late 17th century and continued into the 19th; the reduction to hear! or hear, hear! occurred by the late 18th century. However, the use of the verb hear as an imperative meaning listen! is older: a notable example is the parliamentary-sounding Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear (2 Samuel 20, verse 16) in the King James Bible, first published in 1611.
Aside from the interjection, a number of other grammatical forms are found, such as a hear, hear (originally, of course, a hear him or hear ye), meaning 'a cheer'; to hear-hear, meaning 'to shout "hear, hear!"'; and hear-hearer, meaning 'a person who shouts "hear, hear!"'.

Its not just about Obama.
And its not just about who is going to be the next president.
It is about where we are and how we got here. We are here because we were too quiet for too long. We saw what was happening and did not do enough to stop it.
Sit quietly and take it? Sorry dude. No sale. We do not need less outrage. We need more. Before, during and after the election.
As a matter of practicality, I will vote for obama, but I will be damned if I am going to watch him, or anyone else who represents me be complicit in this bullshit without at least hearing about it.
Naomi Wolf is a journalist, as are we all in our own way. Who the hell am I to hold her to account for anything? But, if she were running for office in my district you could bet your ass I would be screaming about her voting record too.
Hightower said a lot in that interview. But what stuck in my mind was Obama is not running far enough to the left and that IS OUR FAULT. I believe that to be true.
Is it not possible to criticize those representatives you are trying to help? Is it not in fact your responsibility to do so?
Pensions jeopardized

WASHINGTON (AP) _ About half of employers with defined-benefit pension plans have frozen one or more of those plans, putting the retirement incomes of millions at risk, according to a government report made public Tuesday.
The Government Accountability Office said more than 3 million people covered by its study, which represented about a fifth of all participants in single-employer defined-benefit plans, are affected by freezes.

I agree maggieboy. The situation is to dire to argue over Obama's liberalism. It's ridiculous! We simply don't have the time for this. Our main focus as Progressives should be to drive the foul, Devil 's dung- known as the Republican Party out of office. Believe me, they are planning to steal another election. Instead of Malloy pounding Obama's ass every night, he should take a few cues from Hannity and Rush. We need our own Operation Chaos. GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba, July 22 (Reuters) -
Osama bin Laden's driver knew the target of the fourth hijacked jetliner in the Sept. 11 attacks, a prosecutor said on Tuesday in an attempt to draw a link between Salim Hamdan and the al Qaeda leadership in the first Guantanamo war crimes trial.
Hamdan's lawyer said in opening statements that the Yemeni,
held for nearly seven years before his trial, was just a paid employee of the fugitive al Qaeda leader, a driver in the motor pool who never joined the militant group or plotted attacks on America.
But prosecutor Timothy Stone told the six-member jury of
U.S. military officers who will decide Hamdan's guilt or
innocence that Hamdan had inside knowledge of the 2001 attacks on the United States because he overheard a conversation between bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri.
"If they hadn't shot down the fourth plane
it would've hit the dome," Stone, a Navy officer, said in his opening remarks.
The tribunal's chief prosecutor, Col. Lawrence Morris,
later explained that Stone was quoting Hamdan in evidence that will be presented at trial. Morris declined to say if the "dome" was a reference to the U.S. Capitol.
"Virtually no one knew the intended target, but the accused
knew," Stone said.

Flailing Attacks Hurt McCain
Flailing Attacks Hurt McCain More Than Intended Target
(Newser) – Attacking Barack Obama relentlessly and sloppily, John McCain has made himself an example of what voters “want change from,” John Dickerson writes in Slate. A good negative attack can be effective, but Mac is doing it “too much and indiscriminately”—making himself so untrustworthy the smart stuff doesn’t stick. He could go after Obama all the time—but he’s just not good at it.
Republicans are debating whether McCain should focus instead on his own positive message, and telling his own story, but Dickerson sees a problem there, too: “He's for the surge and remedying global warming, yes, and for allowing states to drill for oil off the country's coastlines. But those are data points, not an arc.”

Some Guardsmen, Reservists
Some Guardsmen, Reservists back from Iraq didn't get benefits
By Les Blumenthal | McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs failed to send benefit packages to nearly 37,000 National Guard and Reserve members who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan because it mistakenly thought they were ineligible.
Several senators raised the discovery Wednesday, detailed in a report by the VA's Office of Inspector General, as the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee held a hearing on whether Guard and Reserve members are being adequately informed of the benefits that are available to them.
"While the VA has targeted outreach programs in place to help service members, we still miss far too many veterans who need help and aren't aware of the services and benefits they have earned," said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., a senior member of the committee.
Murray and others have long criticized the VA and the Defense Department as not doing enough to ensure that the more than 488,000 members of the National Guard and Reserves who've been mobilized and deployed are notified of and receive the benefits they're entitled to.
VA and Pentagon officials defended their efforts and said that improvements have been made.
"I am pleased to report the VA and Defense Department are coordinating their efforts more closely than ever before," said retired Maj. Gen. Marianne Mathewson-Chapman, the coordinator of the VA's outreach programs for the National Guard and Reserves.
Murray said a recent Pentagon study found that National Guard members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan were 25 percent more likely to suffer from combat-related psychological problems than active-duty soldiers who've been deployed. In addition, Guard and Reserve members are twice as likely to have their VA claims denied as active-duty service members are, she said.

THE RED ANTS OF FERNANDO
[Gradual rise of sci-fi/suspense theme music]
Hey, Fernando!
I'll give you the end first. It's sort of like "War of Worlds" where the alien invaders were wiped out by [suspense theme music] THE COMMON COLD GERM.
So here's the end first: YOUR HOME WILL SMELL GOOOOD LIKE ORANGES.
Two things for ants:
FIRST suggestion:
AND IT WORKS!
Get a nice big sack of Valencia oranges. Cut in quarters and peel off rind in an easy motion. Put the quarter sections of orange flesh in a freezer container and freeze. Those are for YOU, Fernando; you can now throw a few in the blender with other frozen fruit (Mmmm, blueberries, or peaches, or, mmmm, bananas) and make ice cold smoothies!
Okay, now those lovely pointed ovoid-shaped pieces of rinds: Take a sharp knife and cut them into long narrow pieces. Now put these around the outside of your house, anywhere you see the ant trails or entrance points. Ants hate the citrus oil.
OR you can pay out $$ for a bottle of Citri-Solv citrus peel solvent and use as directed, spraying a solution around in areas (be careful not to harm fine woods, etc.!)
Smells GREAT! But the ants hate it and REPELLED!
(I feed my cats and dog on the porch and the ants discovered this, but after I put the dried peels around the edges and sort of under the porch, NO MORE ANTS.)
ANOTHER possibility -- BUT THIS MUST BE USED WHERE PETS AND PEOPLE WON'T BREATHE THE DUST -- is diatomaceous earth (ground shells) which kills the ants (and other bugs) by getting into their ectoskeleton and dehydrates them. (When we and mammals, birds breathe this stuff it can cause lung damage, so use with caution). Can be purchased in garden nurseries.
Night all
Getting sleepy.
Later
Thank you nora
That sounds like the right thing to do. I was thinking about adding barrier layers with boric acid right next to the foundation and weep holes. What do you think? That dehydrates them.

Keep thinking the Supreme Court...
University of Illinois law professor says he has offered to represent Iran if it decides to sue the United States over threatened nuclear program sanctions.
Iran's Press TV reported Tuesday that Francis Boyle, an international law expert, is urging Iranian leaders to sue Israel and the United States through the International Court of Justice in The Hague (OTCBB:HGUE) over their ultimatum that Iran freeze its nuclear enrichment program in a matter of weeks or face further sanctions.
If Iran decides to sue, he told the broadcaster, he would represent the country.
"My proposal was that Iran should sue these states immediately, convene an emergency hearing by the World Court, and ask the court to indicate provisional measures of protection on behalf of Iran against the United States, Israel and the EU-3 -- basically a temporary restraining order," Boyle said.
He told Press TV such a lawsuit would discourage a military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and prevent the imposition of new sanctions by the U.N. Security Council.

Francis A. Boyle on the case against Bush and potential war with Iran
George W. Bush could be indicted at the state level for murder with malice aforethought, that according to internationally recognized legal expert Francis A. Boyle of the School of Law at the University of Illinois.
According to Boyle, President Bush deceived US soldiers about the reason for sending them to Iraq. Thus, he argues, the 4100 US soldiers who have died in Iraq thus far were murdered. Professor Boyle sees a variety of cases that could be brought and he believes it would take just one indictment and the whole house of cards would fall.
We also discuss the latest foreboding headlines on Iran. During his visit to Europe President George W. Bush met with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the two leaders outlined plans for sanctions on a leading Iranian bank plus possible limits on Iran's ability to ship oil. While in Europe President George W. Bush has referred to a desire for diplomacy with Iran while adding all options are still on the table. Bush announced a new plan to prevent Iran from shipping oil. Shortly after that George Bush and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced a plan to sanction Iran's largest bank.
The Washington Post and CNN reported this week that Pakistani nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan provided a Swiss smuggling ring with blueprints for an advanced warhead. The reports specifically mentioned that Iran, North Korea, and other countries, could have acquired these plans. A.Q. Khan, Abdul Qadeer Khan, was arrested in 2003, and these and similar stories appear to trace back to a computer and other equipment seized then.
The source for this story was former top U.N. arms inspector David Albright. David Albright has been controversial since 2003 when he continued to argue that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction programs long after others gave up that argument. Albright maintained they may have been smaller than the White House alleged.
The Associated Press has now interviewed A.Q. Khan by phone to Islamabad where he is under house arrest. He told A.P. that David Albright's report is quote: "All concoction" and "a pack of lies". He argued that Albright is working for the CIA, and claimed the latest reports are part of a campaign to pressure Pakistan.
The U.S. is of course applying pressure in the form of air attacks in Pakistan near the Afghan border. Tensions are rising and Jane Perlez reported in the International Herald Tribune that Pakistani soldiers and others in the country are enraged about the US air strike that killed 11 soldiers from the Frontier Corps, a paramilitary force Washington has been spending $400 million to train.
Francis A. Boyle is highly skeptical about the report from David Albright.
This is part one of a two part special on the case against George W. Bush and the potential for war with Iran.

FBI Backs Off From Secret Order for Data After Lawsuit
By Ellen Nakashima
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, May 8, 2008; D01
The FBI has withdrawn a secret administrative order seeking the name, address and online activity of a patron of the Internet Archive after the San Francisco-based digital library filed suit to block the action.
It is one of only three known instances in which the FBI has backed off from such a data demand, known as a "national security letter," or NSL, which is not subject to judicial approval and whose recipient is barred from disclosing the order's existence.
NSLs are served on phone companies, Internet service providers and other electronic communications service providers, but because of the gag order provision, the public has little way to know about them. Their use soared after the September 2001 terrorist attacks, when Congress relaxed the standard for their issuance. FBI officials now issue about 50,000 such orders a year.
The order against the Internet Archive was served Nov. 26, and the nonprofit challenged it based on a provision of the reauthorized USA Patriot Act, which protects libraries from such requests. The privacy advocacy group Electronic Frontier Foundation represented the archive in the suit, which was joined by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The archive also alleged that the gag order that accompanied the data demand violated the Constitution.
As part of their settlement, the FBI agreed to drop the gag order and the archive agreed to withdraw the complaint. The case was unsealed Monday. Yesterday, redacted versions of key documents were filed, allowing the parties to discuss the case.
"We see this as an unqualified success," said Brewster Kahle, the archive's co-founder and digital librarian. "The goal here was to help other recipients of NSLs to understand that you can push back."
Every time an NSL has been challenged in court, the FBI has backed off, said Melissa Goodman, an ACLU staff attorney. "That calls into question how much the FBI needed the information in the first place, and finally, whether the FBI needs this kind of sweeping and unchecked surveillance power."
The two other instances of NSL withdrawals involved a library and an Internet consulting business. In February 2004, the FBI served an NSL on the Internet firm. In November 2006, the FBI withdrew the letter, after a lawsuit by the ACLU, but maintained the gag order, which is why the firm has not been publicly identified. The lawsuit, which challenges the constitutionality of the law authorizing NSLs, is still pending.

Congress Should Demand Answers from Attorney General
WASHINGTON, DC - The American Civil Liberties Union urges the House Judiciary Committee to demand accountability from Attorney General Michael Mukasey during the Department of Justice oversight hearing scheduled for today.
"Mukasey was supposed to come in and clean up the Justice Department, but instead he seems to be intent on burying any evidence of wrongdoing by the Bush administration," said Caroline Fredrickson, director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office, "In addition to asking Congress to rubberstamp failed administration policies on torture and wiretapping, he's offered at least one new bad policy of his own by paving the way for the FBI to use racial and ethnic profiling as a factor in deciding whether to open up investigations," she said.
The Associated Press revealed that new FBI guidelines allowing racial profiling are scheduled to be implemented later this summer. The ACLU has urged that Congress ask Mukasey for more information including a copy of the proposed guidelines. The ACLU urges members to ask Mukasey how new guidelines would help, not hurt, intelligence gathering when it would damage trust with Arab and Muslim communities?
The oversight hearing also comes days after Attorney General Mukasey called on Congress to enact the Bush administration's scheme for undermining the recent Supreme Court decision restoring constitutional habeas corpus protections to the detainees at Guantanamo.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan's intelligence agencies and police have disappeared hundreds of Pakistanis, including children as young as 9, as part of the U.S.-led war on terrorism, Amnesty International charged Wednesday.
The missing Pakistanis frequently were tortured and have been moved among secret detention centers regularly so that they become impossible to trace, the human rights group said.
Amnesty said that allied countries, primarily the United States, had "benefited from this activity," which began under the regime of President Pervez Musharraf. Some citizens were handed over to foreign intelligence agents for questioning in Pakistan or abroad, it said.
The human rights group was highly critical of Pakistan's newly elected government for not taking firm steps to recover the apparent terrorism suspects, some of whom have been missing for up to seven years and never been charged.
Amnesty didn't give a number of those missing but backed the claims of relatives groups' that at least 563 people remain unaccounted for.

But what I write causes extreme anger for the very simple reason that I use the U.S. government's official definition of terrorism from the official U.S. code of laws. If you use that definition, it follows very quickly that the U.S. is the leading terrorist state and a major sponsor of terrorism and since that conclusion is unacceptable, it arouses furious anger. But the problem lies in the unwillingness to recognize that your own terrorism is terrorism. This is not just true of the United States, it's true quite generally. Terrorism is something that they do to us. In both cases, it's terrorism and we have to get over that if we're serious about the question.

Who's whining now...
Today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is introducing
the The Advance America’s Priorities Act,
which is “a package of about 40 bills that have in many cases been single-handedly stalled by one of the Senate’s more conservative members,” Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK).
But Coburn and other conservatives are not happy about Reid’s efforts to pass the bundle of popular, bipartisan legislation. Coburn took to the Senate floor last night to “protest” the upcoming bill “for more than an hour.”
Bitter about Reid’s tactics, some conservatives have taken to referring to the bill as the “Reid vengeance bill.”

McCain..... Hey, pull my finger my friend.

Screw'em
I hope Reid finally grows a pair and crams it down their obstructionist throats.
Make Coburn filibuster, see if he can't get the Republican co-sponsors to vote it down.

inefficient utopias
...
One of the most inefficient utopias I have ever seen was that of a humble Zapatista village in the mountains of Southeastern Mexico. I kid you not, the entire village sits down and takes days to make a single decision! Everyone gets a chance to hear and be heard, and some questions take eons of time, but everyone is patient and respectful. Things actually get done. It’s as if time was suddenly transformed from the ticking of a Newtonian clock to something that revolved around ordinary folks.
Mexican peasants, under the constant threat of government extermination, take time to decide everything by consensus. It isn’t strange to them to discuss problems and issues until everyone can agree on a decision. I hope to live in a society where we can take time to show each other how we all really do matter. Instead of reaching only for meetings with thousands of people in the U.S., we can replicate this process with small groups of friends. Consensus is not a two-hour meeting with everything decided beforehand! It’s the time spent to discuss and understand issues of real importance, a tactical method for building networks that are stronger than anything hierarchy could ever offer. With enough time, we will accomplish things with “villages” of hundreds, even thousands. This will produce consensus that doesn’t seek to impose uniformity, but foster and create alliances which celebrate differences. I can only imagine the possibilities.

anarchist adventurer and professional amateur
True, but at least they can get SOMETHING out of it.
Instead of just wimping out, Reid should smack them upside the head with it. He has yet to even challenge the threat of a filibuster. Even a filibuster here pits Republican against Republican.

Ever wonder why this country we were born in (or not) are called 'free' and yet blood filled and blood less coups occur in other countries and not here?
"Hey, wait a minute..."
If you use that definition, it follows very quickly that the U.S. is the leading terrorist state and a major sponsor of terrorism and since that conclusion is unacceptable, it arouses furious anger. But the problem lies in the unwillingness to recognize that your own terrorism is terrorism.
...sometimes when listening to our "homegrown terrorists" talking about other terrorists, or who they define as terrorists, you can pick up an ever so slight inflection, hesitation, or pause as they realize they could be or are talking about themselves.
And some of those coups by the people weren't even instigated
by your elected government...
You are perceptive, CeeCee...
Iranian autoworkers strike against precarious work
Thousands of workers at the Iran Khodro car manufacturing plant are protesting the exploitation of precarious workers and demanding better wages and conditions.
What began as a hunger strike launched on June 28 has grown to a full-scale strike as thousands of workers at Iran Khodro, the country's largest auto manufacturer, walked off the job to win wage and conditions improvements.
Workers' demands include:
1) Prohibited entry of security guards to workstations;
2) An end to mandatory over-time;
3) Increases in productivity benefits;
4) Wage increases in line with cost of living adjustments;
5) An end to temporary contracts allowing for the hiring of workers on a permanent basis;
6) An end to the expansion of subcontracting companies; and
7) Participation of workers' representatives in key decision making committees.
Workers are protesting the company's use of contracts and temporary work agencies to deny workers basic labour rights and decent working conditions. Many contract and temporary employees of Iran Khodro have worked there for as long as 10 years and are often forced to work overtime.

2008 Convergence Reportback Teaser
July 23, 2008
Here’s a brief summary of this past week’s convergence, until someone completes a lengthier report. You’ll have to read about it here, if not in the minutes of the next FBI witch hunt (see supporteric.org), since neither the New York Times nor Fox News succeeded in getting their stooges on site and the local media could only string together the usual clichés.
This year’s CrimethInc. Convergence occurred 40 miles outside of Milwaukee, WI, on the outskirts of the tiny town of Waldo. It began with appropriate theatrics. As participants descended upon the campsite on the first day, so did a massive supercell—spawning a tornado touchdown a mere 15 miles away—and with it, 70 mph horizontal winds and rain that threatened to carry everyone off. The early arrivals lucky enough to experience the storm had to hold on for dear life to prevent the temporary structures from blowing away. Despite this challenge, everything was cleaned up and reconstructed in time for the opening circle at dusk.

Really. I gotta ZZZZZZZZ
Of Ideals, Idealism, Principles, Ideology...
just to add athought to augment your statement MB
Submitted by mhappenow on Wed, 07/23/2008 - 9:45pm.
compromising ideals is not the same as compromising principles. THis is no time to be idealogical...it is time to be practical in a principled way.
=======================================
These words need to clarified before anyone decides to compromise any of them.
Ideals:
1. A conception of something in its highest perfection
2. A standard of perfection or excellence
Idealism:
The cherishing or pursuing of ideals
Ideology:
1. The body of MYTH, DOCTRINE, DOGMA, AND SYMBOLS of a social movement, institution, class or large group.
2. Such a body of doctrine, etc., with reference to some political or cultural plan, as that of fascism, along with the devices for putting it into operation.
(I'd say Straussian Neocons and Republicans pursue ideology. In contrast, Progressives are seeking to improve the world through their idealism. But I'm biased, of course.)
Principle:
1. An accepted or professed rule of action or conduct (a man of good principles).
2. A fundamental, primary, or general truth, on which other truths depend (the principles of government).
3. A fundamental doctrine or tenet; a distinctive ruling opinion (the principles of the Stoics).
4. (plural) Right rules of conduct.
5. Guiding sense of the requirements and obligations of right conduct (a man of principles).
6. Fixed rule or adopted method as to action.
AND SO ON to 7. through 15. pertaining to natural phenomenon and science, etc.
I never want to compromise my ideals. To do so is to lose part of myself.
Ideology is manmade stuff. Useful, but changeable with us Progressives anyway, right?
Principles. I can change those, too, as I grow and change and expand and progress and learn to choose more and more often "DO NO HARM" and expand my ability to Love.
Goodnight, ellwort.. pleasant dreams to you two too...

Hey cent, have you heard of Manly Hall? The vet couldn't figure out what Homer ate. His liver just flat failed. He came home one night and barffed up something that looked like part of a black snake. We figured he would be okay, this was not the first time he had gotten a hold of the local wild life and it didn't agree with him. The next morning he was unconscious. The vet kept him alive till the following morning, but had no idea what the nature of the toxin was. He wanted $1500 for a post mortem. In addition to the 500 I had just given him. I told him forget it.
Mystery, his pair bond, still wanders around the house at night meowing for him. She pretty much sleep with me now.

Impeach Bush for Iraq Lies
On 7/15/08, Rep. Dennis Kucinich introduced H.Res. 1345, one Article of Impeachment Against President Bush.
H.Res. 1345 says Bush should be impeached because he "deceived Congress with fabricated threats of Iraq Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) to fraudulently obtain support for an authorization for the use of force against Iraq and used that fraudulently obtained authorization, then acting in his capacity under Article II, Section II of the Constitution as Commander in Chief, to commit US troops to combat in Iraq."
The evidence that Rep. Kucinich has presented for this charge is overwhelming. It is imperative to impeach George Bush both to hold him accountable for his crimes and to deter future Presidents from committing similar crimes.

Excerpt:
Old John McCain said “Iraq” on Monday when he apparently meant “Afghanistan”,
adding to a string of mixed-up word choices that is giving ammunition to the opposition.
Just in the past three weeks, McCain has also mistaken "Somalia" for "Sudan,"
and even football’s Green Bay Packers for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ironically,
the errors have been concentrated in what should be his area of expertise: foreign affairs.
McCain will turn 72 in a few weeks, calling new attention to the sensitive issue
of McCain’s advanced age three days before the start of his own convention.
Are the gaffes the result of his age?
And what could that mean in the Oval Office?

John Nicholos on Carter, Obama and the middle east peace
When I interviewed former President Carter about how to pursue and achieve peace in the Middle East, he made two essential points.
First: "It is possible for an American President to advance the peace process, to achieve meaningful progress. It is also necessary--more necessary now than it has ever been."
Second: To achieve meaningful progress, however, a president must start immediately.
"As you know, it is not generally expected that they will do this in the first year or two of their administration," Carter said of the work of prodding Israel and its neighbors not merely to negotiate but to make the compromises necessary to achieve a lasting peace. "President Clinton did not do it until his last year in office, and President Bush now is saying that he is going to try and do something. I'm not bragging about myself, but I started in the first two months of my administration. We finished it the second year I was in office. It is possible to achieve progress, if you start early enough and make it clear that peace is a priority of the administration."
Carter is, of course, correct.
Despite the battering he takes from those who do not know the Middle East, and from those who for reasons of politics do not want to see peace between Israel and Palestine, Carter is the only member of the fraternity of current and former presidents who has any useful advice to offer an incoming American leader with regard to advancing a peace process.
That is why, when we sort through all of the statements that Barack Obama made during his recent visit to the Middle East, the only one that really matters is this: ''My goal is to make sure that we work starting from the minute I'm sworn in to office to try to find some breakthroughs."
It is the commitment to engage from Day 1 that is critical.
As Carter explained to me, this has less to do with timing than with priorities.
Israeli and Palestinian leaders have grown accustomed to American Presidents who do not pay serious attention to the region until they are in the legacy-building stage of their tenures. Only when a president is thinking about how he might win a Nobel Prize for Peace does he decide to try and skip across the minefields of the Middle East.
By then, as Clinton learned and as Bush is learning, it is too late. A lame-duck president is not in a position to make progress in a part of the world that, for better or worse, responds best to strength and stability.
Obama, whose world tour was sufficiently successful to stir serious discussion of what his presidency might entail, will be in a unique position to promote peace in the region. Unlike Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who refused to meet with the Palestinians, Obama has held the right meetings with right players and begun to make the connections that will be necessary to promoting peace in the region.
More importantly, Obama has got the timeline right.
A president who is serious about Middle East peace must start working to achieve it on Day 1 -- not on that day, late in a failed administration, when he starts to think about how history will consider him.

Happe Talk
and
Obama's Wrong Turn in Afghanistan
posted by John Nichols on 07/19/2008 @ 5:57pm
Running for president is a perilous endeavor. Candidates make mistakes.
And Barack Obama is making a serious mistake this weekend.
As he tours Afghanistan, the senator from Illinois says he is "more interested in listening than doing a lot of talking."
That would be good if it were the case.
Unfortunately, Obama is busy making promises.
After meeting with the Democratic presidential candidate inside the US base in Jalalabad, Afghan warlord turned provincial governor Gul Agha Sherzai told reporters, "Obama promised us that if he becomes a president in the future, he will support and help Afghanistan not only in its security sector but also in reconstruction, development and economic sector."
Translation: Obama is not listening. He is making commitments.
Specific commitments.
Despite the fact that there are more foreign troops in Afghanistan today than at any time since the 2001 invasion -- roughly 60,000 total, including 36,000 Americans – Obama is proposing to dispatch two more US combat brigades (comprising more than 7,000 soldiers) to Afghanistan. That will give the United States even greater responsibility for a technically NATO-led ooccupation.
The Democrat's send-more-troops proposal is precisely the same as that of Republican John McCain.
And it is precisely wrong.
Dramatic increases in the US troop presence in Afghanistan in the past year have done nothing to stabilize the situation on the ground in the country. In fact, US military officials acknowledge that attacks in eastern Afghanistan -- the sector of the country where the majority of US forces currently operate -- are up by 40 percent so far in 2008.
So, too, as recent events remind us, are US and Afghan death tolls.
More troops will not cure what ails Afghanistan.
That's because, even though the cover of the latest edition of Time magazine refers to the fight in Afghanistan as "The Right War," and even though Obama seems to have bought into this particularly dangerous variation Washington-insider spin, there is nothing right or smart about deepening the US troop commitment in a country that has a long history of thwarting the best-laid plans of great military powers.

Fernando,
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about advertising on progressive radio. I have forwarded your comment to our marketing team for their consideration. It is important to note, though, that we spend much less than most companies on marketing and advertising. Instead we choose to spend our dollars within the communities that we do business. For example, each store holds a 5% day four times per year where 5% of that day’s sales are donated to a local charity.
Thank you for sharing your concern about the world in which we live.

Claims – Today’s weekly initial unemployment claims report is expected to show a +14,000 increase to 380,000, adding to last week’s increase of +18,000 to 366,000. Continuing claims are expected to rise +38,000 to 3.160 million, reversing part of last week’s –81,000 decline to 3.122 million. The claims series has been volatile in the past two weeks due to the Fourth of July holiday. Nevertheless, initial claims and particularly continuing claims remain near multi-year highs as businesses continue to lay off employees at a relatively high rate and as the number of people on the unemployment rolls piles up. Next Friday’s July unemployment report is expected to show continued labor market weakness with a –68,000 decline in payrolls (which would be the seventh consecutive monthly decline) and a +0.1 point increase in the July unemployment rate to 5.6% (which would be a new 4-year high).
