McCain on working class

McCain on working class wages
by smintheus
Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 05:13:01 PM PDT
Since the nation is in the midst of John McCain's 'housing crisis', in which he tries to remember how many houses he owns, and we're all still trying to figure out why McCain thinks an income of $5,000,000/year is needed to be considered rich, it's worth revisiting McCain's opinion about the value of wages. In 2006 at an AFL-CIO convention, when asked about the effect of immigration in depressing wages, McCain declared that no Americans would be willing do agricultural work for as little as $50/hour. At that rate, a worker would make as much in 6 months as the average annual household income in the US.

McCain responded by saying immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted. He offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.

Shouts of protest rose from the crowd, with some accepting McCain’s job offer.

"I’ll take it!" one man shouted.

McCain insisted none of them would do such menial labor for a complete season. "You can’t do it, my friends."

Some in the crowd said they didn’t appreciate McCain questioning their work ethic.

A fake jobs program - the only kind Republicans favor. That's more than arrogant. McCain is totally out of touch with the realities of working Americans.

I'd love for voters to ask McCain at townhalls this summer and fall whether he still thinks nobody's willing to work for as little as $50/hour.

Of course they are. They're not the only ones, either.

The reaction to Maddow's show highlights just how suffocatingly narrow, and right-wing, the spectrum of mainstream political discourse in America is. Hiring Michael Savage, Joe Scarborough and Tucker Carlson to host their own shows didn't jeopardize NBC's news brand, just as giving Glenn Beck -- Glenn Beck -- his own show didn't jeopardize CNN's. Most mainstream political and media figures even continue to insist that Fox is a legitimate news organization because Brit Hume confines his overt right-wing talking points to the Sunday show. But the presence of a liberal on MSNBC instantaneously destroys traditional principles of Journalism.

How to take the people's eyes off the Dem Convention in four days, off the new timetable for a pull out of troops in Iraq, off the fact that McCain's real history of vast wealth and adultry is now out in the open, and put it right back where it McCain would like it: on the War on Terror?

Why, it must be time for an anthrax attack! Even though the US government scientist who sent American anthrax to Congressional and media figures in 2001 just killed himself and the FBI hurriedly closed the case, McCain was fortunate enough to have suspicious white powder sent to his campaign offices in New Hampshire and, of course, Denver today. Funny how that happens when you want to turn around a news cycle. I guess this is just John McCain's way of going Bush one better, Bush who fabricated more than a dozen terrorist alerts to take bad news for him off the front page.

http://www.cbsnews.com/...

Call me heartless. Tell Olbermann I know he also got white powder and it was wrong for the NY Post to mock him over hit. But this is just way to convenient to be believed.

I'm sure the government has their "top men" on it too. And I'm sure the Denver Police are ramping up security against "terrorists" and "protestors" even tighter as the Democrats arrive.

Someone with unauthorized access placed over 400 calls through FEMA's National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Md. to several countries in the Middle East.

A hacker hijacked the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) phone system over the weekend, leaving the agency with bill of about $12,000.

According to the Associated Press, someone placed over 400 calls through FEMA's National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Md., to several countries in the Middle East.

FEMA is a part of the Department of Homeland Security.

The hacker took advantage of a newly installed voice-mail system. FEMA's CIO, Jeanne Etzel, is investigating the incident, according to FEMA spokeswoman Debbie Wing.

The preliminary results of the investigation suggest that a contractor involved with the installation of the voice-mail system appears to have been responsible for the system's misconfiguration, Wing said.

Wing said that FEMA became aware of the unauthorized calls on Saturday, Aug. 16, and that technicians promptly made the necessary corrections. She said she didn't have any information about whether one person or several were responsible for the more than 400 unauthorized calls.

Wing said she too had seen the $12,000 cost figure reported but couldn't immediately confirm it. She also said that she was unsure about whether FEMA would end up paying for the calls. She said that she expected the agency would try to work something out with its telecom service provider.

Last year, hackers broke into dozens of computers at the Department of Homeland Security and spirited sensitive data to China. Government investigators blamed a government contractor, Unisys (NYSE: UIS), for failing to deploy intrusion detection systems.

Unisys issued a statement disputing the allegations, noting that it could not fully respond due to federal security regulations that "preclude public comment on specific incidents."

Suicide Bomber Kills 58 outside Munitions Plant;
Zardari Candidate for President

The Tehrik-i Taliban responded to Pakistani military operations against it at Bajaur by sending a suicide bomber to attack workers leaving a munitions factory. Some 57 are dead and 70 wounded.

The Pakistan People's Party, the largest party in parliament, has reportedly decided to seek to get its de facto leader, Asaf Ali Zardari, elected as the new president. Zardari, the widower of Benazir Bhutto, might be able to count on a sympathy vote in parliament.

Although the wrangling over who will be president is being reported in the US press as a crisis, I don't see it that way. It is, rather, an ordinary political process in which eventually there will be a winner who will garner enough votes to be elected. No one is brandishing a gun over all this to my knowledge. You might as well call the current presidential campaign in the US to determine who will succeed George W. Bush a crisis. There is an interim president, and if the process takes a while, it will just give the prime minister a chance to garner more executive power, which would be all to the good. In the aftermath, I hope that the special prerogatives of the presidency, rooted in martial law amendments of the 1980s, can finally be gotten rid of.

Thanks for the reminder smcgee43

If anyone is in Colorado Springs this weekend..

War resistor, Robin Long, faces expedited court martial tomorrow, Friday, August 22

Last week, I told you about war resistor Robin Long, 25-year-old U.S. Army Private First Class who recently was deported from Canada and handed over to military authorities in the U.S. We recently learned that Robin faces court martial tomorrow at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs, CO. Robin could face three years confinement, forfeiture of pay, and a dishonorable discharge from the Army if found guilty. Regarding his decision to resist, Robin explains, “Regardless of what hardships I go through, I could have put Iraqi families through more hardships. I have no regrets.” IVAW members across Colorado will offer support by attending Robin’s court martial tomorrow. If you are in the Colorado Springs area and would like to show your support by attending, here are the details:

7:30 AM - Arrive at the Ft. Carson Main Gate at 7:30 AM to ensure you can get to Bldg. 6221 in time. You will need to provide a drivers license, registration, and proof of insurance if driving. Do not wear any political buttons, t-shirts, etc.

5:00 PM - Join Robin's lawyer, James Branum, and supporters for a vigil and press conference at the Main Gate to hear about the results of Robin’s hearing.

Other things you can do to support Robin:
1. Please take a few moments to write Robin a simple note of support today. Moral support is such an important way to support war resistors, who are taking serious risks and to stand up for their conscience and are role models for others. They need to know that they have not been forgotten, and that their sacrifice is recognized. You can send a letter to Robin by writing to:
Robin Long, CJC
2739 East Las Vegas
Colorado Springs CO 80906

Robin is allowed to receive hand-written or typed letters only. His letters will be reviewed, so please do not write anything inflammatory that might get him in trouble. Do NOT include postage stamps, drawings, stickers, copied photos or print articles. However, you may send Robin a money order for commissary items (postage stamps, toothbrush, shirts, paper, snacks, etc.). The money order should be in U.S. funds made out to "Robin Long, EPSO". The sender’s name must be written on the money order. Robin cannot receive packages of any type from private citizens. But, you may order a book for Robin from either Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble and have it shipped directly to him from either of these companies. They know the procedure for delivering books to inmates.
2. Donate to Robin's legal defense.

McCain’s POW Defense: Devaluing Our Service and His Own

By Lt. Gen Robert G. Gard Jr., USA (Ret.)

The McCain campaign has spent weeks trying to portray Obama as out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans. Today, an interviewer at Politico.com asked McCain how many homes he and his wife owned, to which he responded that he was not sure but would get someone from his staff to answer.

Contrary to what many will tell you, this does not make McCain out of touch with ordinary Americans, as many families today are in trouble with their banks and trying to figure out how many homes they have - zero or one.

Still, it’s the campaign’s defense we find deeply troubling:

“This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years — in prison.”

We obviously honor and respect McCain’s service and the five-and-a-half years of horror that he went through at the hands of the North Vietnamese; but it’s not an excuse for everything. He has already used it to explain away his infidelities in his first marriage. He’s used it to defend his healthcare plan. He just the other day used it to deflect accusations of having skirted the rules of the Saddleback forum.

It’s time for the Senator to stop cheapening the war experiences of thousands of vets and his fellow POWs, and his own as well, by stretching the boundaries of logic to make his POW status a wild-card rebuttal to all accusations or an answer to all difficult questions.

We are veterans who like John McCain, who served honorably, but and we continue to serve our country honorably by not using our military experiences as unjustifiable necessary shields or stepping stones. John McCain has faced and will continue to face many difficult questions that he does not have an answer for, and problems to which that he will provides no solutions to, in the 70 days between now and the election. When he uses his status as a veteran to deflect legitimate questions and concerns, it devalues not just his service to our country but ours as well.

So today, we ask not as Veterans for Obama, but as Veterans of America that Sen. McCain respect the service of his fellow POWs and combat veterans, and stop cheapening their service by hiding behind his own.

New Guidelines Would Give F.B.I. Broader Powers

By ERIC LICHTBLAU
Published: August 20, 2008
WASHINGTON — A Justice Department plan would loosen restrictions on the Federal Bureau of Investigation to allow agents to open a national security or criminal investigation against someone without any clear basis for suspicion, Democratic lawmakers briefed on the details said Wednesday.

The plan, which could be made public next month, has already generated intense interest and speculation. Little is known about its precise language, but civil liberties advocates say they fear it could give the government even broader license to open terrorism investigations.

Congressional staff members got a glimpse of some of the details in closed briefings this month, and four Democratic senators told Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey in a letter on Wednesday that they were troubled by what they heard.

The senators said the new guidelines would allow the F.B.I. to open an investigation of an American, conduct surveillance, pry into private records and take other investigative steps “without any basis for suspicion.” The plan “might permit an innocent American to be subjected to such intrusive surveillance based in part on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, or on protected First Amendment activities,” the letter said. It was signed by Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island.

As the end of the Bush administration nears, the White House has been seeking to formalize in law and regulation some of the aggressive counterterrorism steps it has already taken in practice since the Sept. 11 attacks.

Congress overhauled the federal wiretapping law in July, for instance, and President Bush issued an executive order this month ratifying new roles for intelligence agencies. Other pending changes would also authorize greater sharing of intelligence information with the local police, a major push in the last seven years.

The Justice Department is already expecting criticism over the F.B.I. guidelines. In an effort to pre-empt critics, Mr. Mukasey gave a speech last week in Portland, Ore., describing the unfinished plan as an effort to “integrate more completely and harmonize the standards that apply to the F.B.I.’s activities.” Differing standards, he said, have caused confusion for field agents.

Mr. Mukasey emphasized that the F.B.I. would still need a “valid purpose” for an investigation, and that it could not be “simply based on somebody’s race, religion, or exercise of First Amendment rights.”

Rather than expanding government power, he said, “this document clarifies the rules by which the F.B.I. conducts its intelligence mission.”

In 2002, John Ashcroft, then the attorney general, allowed F.B.I. agents to visit public sites like mosques or monitor Web sites in the course of national security investigations. The next year, Mr. Bush issued guidelines allowing officials to use ethnicity or race in “narrow” circumstances to detect a terrorist threat.

The Democratic senators said the draft plan appeared to allow the F.B.I. to go even further in collecting information on Americans connected to “foreign intelligence” without any factual predicate. They also said there appeared to be few constraints on how the information would be shared with other agencies.

I mean, I spent my formative years opening steel beer cans with a church key! Then...in the midst of Vietnam, Watergate and all the rest of the malaise associated with the 70s...BAM!!! Aluminum cans. And there were how many different types of openings for those new cans?

But who really wants to drink from cans, anyway? There used to be a day when you could buy a cold glass bottle of pop just about anywhere. I have a fond memories of the pop machines on the 6th and 15th tees at the golf course I caddied at in the early 70s. Not to mention the ones invariably at the Mom and Pop stores which used to populate the countryside...Today you have to really look for glass bottles and you certainly will pay for the luxury...Now if you want Coca-Cola in a 12 ounce glass bottle, you best look to Mexico. That's right, they don't even make that American icon, the 12 oz glass Coke bottle, in America. Even Fox News Refuses To Run Slime Ad Against Obama
By Eric Kleefeld - August 21, 2008, 7:37PM
How bad does a wingnut ad attacking Obama have to be for Fox News to refuse to run it?

The Associated Press reports that Fox News is declining to run the new ad from the "American Issues Project," a new right-wing swift-boating operation, connecting Obama to former 1960s radical William Ayers.

This may be because the ad accused Ayers of participating in a bombing of the U.S. Capitol, despite there being no evidence he ever did such a thing. So if Fox were to run it, they'd be open to a potential lawsuit for slander.

Looks like even Fox has its limits!

78% of Bush’s signing

78% of Bush’s signing statements “have raised constitutional or legal objections”
By: SilentPatriot @ 3:40 PM - PDT
When President Bush receives a bill he doesn’t like, instead of issuing a veto and challenging Congress to override him as School House Rock would have you believe, he issues a private “signing statement” setting forth how he plans on interpreting the new law. The House Armed Services Committee has just released a report on the practice and the conclusions are not encouraging.

From the report (.pdf)

The Bush Administration’s use of presidential signing statements to indicate disapproval of enacted legislation has generated confusion and has undermined congressional oversight of national defense policy, the House Armed Services Committee said in a report this week

“78 percent of President Bush’s more than 150 signing statements have raised constitutional or legal objections, compared with only 18% of all of President Clinton’s.”

“Signing statements may, if used appropriately, serve a legitimate function as a tool for continuing dialog between the President, Congress, and the public. On the other hand, signing statements may be a mechanism to expand executive authority at the expense of the legislature,” the Committee report said.

As the report makes clear, not all signing statements are bad. Sometimes they’re useful and entirely appropriate, and sometimes they’re used for naked power grabs that are nearly impossible to challenge. Well, it appears 78% of President Bush’s fall into the latter category.

That begs the obvious question: Which laws has Bush challenged?

1. A provision in the 2008 defense bill that would make it illegal to build permanent bases in Iraq. The White House is currently pushing for 58 bases.

2. A bill outlawing the use of torture on detainees. McCain did a lot of grandstanding on the day this law “passed,” but he hasn’t said anything since about Bush’s refusal to abide it.

3. A provision in the Patriot Act that requires the White House to inform Congress on how the FBI was using it’s new spying powers. This one naturally led to the FBI severely abusing their power.

etc. etc.

You know what happens after the President is called out on his lawbreaking, right? The White House should expect Congress’ Strongly Worded Letter™ any day now.

My letter to the editor... read it and weep. Or ridicule, what have you. ;-p

Dear Editor,

I marvel at the audacity of Republicans in congress. Before the August recess, Democrats offered four amendments addressing the energy crisis. All were rejected by Republicans even though they included expanded off-shore drilling, oil shale production, and nuclear power. This sit-in stunt that Republicans are pulling doesn’t hold water. Democrats capitulated on the very issue that Republicans are grandstanding about. Drill here! Drill now! But it's not enough; it’s never enough. Greed rules the day.

What Republicans don’t bother to tell you is this: The Bush administration's own energy advisory concluded that an increase in off-shore drilling or opening up ANWR would not effect gas prices for another 15 to 20 years, and that effect is projected to be around 5 cents a gallon. Why so little? Because we participate in a global oil market.

When the dollar value goes down, as it has under Bush, our oil prices inevitably go up. Speculation, better known as the “Enron loophole,” is also responsible for possibly 60% of current prices. The dollar has been declining for longer than the Democrats have had control of Congress, and speculation is still rampant thanks to Republicans rejecting these amendments.

I saw an ad that claims John McCain is “taking on Big Oil.” How exactly? By wanting to continue the billions of dollars in tax breaks they already have while they also reap record profits? Wanting to give them more leases to drill on when they don’t drill on half of the leases they already pay for? I’m sorry, John, that’s rolling over to, not taking on Big Oil.

The Republican meme this election year seems again to be: Lie. Lie often. Then lie again. Eventually the lie is accepted as truth. Similar is the lie McCain and now Brother Mitt are saying about the conflict in Georgia; that in the 21st century, nations don’t invade other sovereign nations.

Let me tell you a story about a sovereign nation named Iraq, guys. They might tell you a different story.

Affect/Effect

I teach that shit, GBC, and (much as I love this bastard language called English), I know this is one of the hardest sound-alike distinctions to get into the noggin:

"I lie in the sun naked all day, doctor, and I worry that it may affect my skin. What effect could it have?"

But what difference does it make, really? If people pretend not to get what you mean 'cause of this arcane distinction, they're just being assholes, I think.

Feingold for Attorney General

Feingold Joins Call Against FBI 'Surveillance' Proposal

WASHINGTON - Sen. Russ Feingold was among four U.S. senators to voice concern Wednesday about proposed guidelines for FBI investigations that may infringe on the rights of innocent American citizens.

In a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, the senators contend that the guidelines will allow the FBI to use "intrusive investigative techniques ... without any basis for suspicion" when conducting criminal, security and intelligence investigations.

The senators expressed concern that the proposed guidelines would permit FBI officials to subject innocent citizens to "intrusive surveillance" based on someone's race, ethnicity, nationality or religion.

"As you know, attorney general guidelines were first implemented in the wake of FBI abuses of the 1960s and 1970s and serve as one of the bulwarks against future abuses," the senators wrote.

The senators contend Mukasey told them they would be given adequate time to review the proposed guidelines so they could offer appropriate recommendations to the Department of Justice regarding the issue. According to the letter, Mukasey plans to finalize and sign the guidelines next week without any further input from members of Congress.

The senators ask Mukasey to delay giving his final approval to the guidelines until national security and civil liberties experts, the public and members of Congress have had the opportunity to fully analyze the proposed changes, ask questions and offer suggestions to the Department of Justice.

In addition to Feingold, the letter was signed by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.; and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I. All four are members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

EUROPEAN MEETING IN DEFENSE AND IN STRUGGLE WITH THE ZAPATISTAS
ATHENS, 9-10-11 MAY 2008

Companer@s,
Fourteen years after the public appearance of the Zapatista Army for
National Liberation (EZLN), fourteen years after the process of
recuperating land and territory with blood and fire in favor of the
indigenous peoples, zapatista or not, fourteen years after the Fire and
the Word, the zapatista peoples are faced with a new attack from the
Mexican state: legal takeovers of land, forced displacements, threats of
displacement, reactivation of paramilitary groups, attacks against the
integrity of zapatista families, damages to their possessions, political
prisoners and hostages, manufactured offences, are, amongst others, some
of the distinct facts which the zapatista peoples are faced with once
again.

The escalating level of the attacks obliged the EZLNs Sixth Commission to
suspend the tour that had been prepared for last October to pass through
the central and south part of the country in the framework of the Other
Campaign.

This led various organizations in Mexico and in the world to react against
the escalation of repression against the zapatista peoples.

Fire and Word means 12 days of fire and 14 years of honoring the word. If
there is an indigenous movement that has proven in practice one and the
Other, are the zapatista peoples and the EZLN. Through meetings with the
national and international civil society, using dialogue, to build with
everyone a country and a world that are different, where a lot of worlds
can fit (respecting difference), where democracy, freedom and justice will
be a reality for all.

McCain made Charles Keating

McCain made Charles Keating part of his campaign team today
Joe Sudbay (DC) · 8/21/2008 09:07:00 PM ET · Link

Jed posted an excerpt of John King's paean to John McCain last night. We've heard King really, really likes McCain personally, but he actually dealt with one of McCain's biggest controversies -- The Charles Keating Scandal:

Video at link

Perfect timing because Keating is back big time -- and McCain did it himself through his weak attacks on Obama about Rezko. McCain shouldn't have gone there, but he did. Jonathan Singer reviews the history:

The Keating Five is an old story, so many reporters have shied away from saying much about it because it isn't new -- there aren't a whole lot of new developments in the story.

But with McCain talking about allegedly shady relationships, the opportunity is there to go back over McCain's ties to Keating -- whose nefarious activities, which were at least in part aided by his relationship with McCain, ended up costing the American taxpayer $3.4 billion (a whole lot more than the $14 million Rezko was alleged to have received).

Just how close was McCain to Keating? Take a look at this rundown I posted back in January:

Though McCain might try to downplay his involvement, his campaigns received $124,000 from Keating and his associates during the 1980s (AP, 3/2/91), and McCain was described as being personally closer to Keating than any of the other members of the Keating Five (Roll Call, 1/20/92). What's more, McCain accepted more than $15,000 in free trips from Keating, including vacations to Keating's resort in the Bahamas -- trips that McCain failed to disclose at the time (New York Times, 2/28/91; San Francisco Chronicle, 12/3/90).
In the end, the crash of Keating's savings and loan -- which had been shielded by some of his best friends in the United States Senate -- cost billions to the American taxpayer, as mentioned above, and all told the federal government ended up on the hook for close to $125 billion in the fallout of the crisis that befell the underregulated industry in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Does McCain really want to have to talk about all of this? About the Bahaman vacations he took paid for by Keating? Probably not. But he may soon have to as a result of the shortsightedness of his campaign advisors. Nice move team McCain!

Nice move indeed. Keating is back. It's an ugly story. Lots of taxpayer money wasted. And, I didn't know Cindy was right in the thick of it.

Some glory in their birth, some in their skill,
Some in their wealth, some in their body's force,
Some in their garments though new-fangled ill,
Some in their hawks and hounds, some in their horse;
And every humour hath his adjunct pleasure,
Wherein it finds a joy above the rest,
But these particulars are not my measure;
All these I better in one general best.
Thy love is better than high birth to me,
Richer than wealth, prouder than garments' costs,
Of more delight than hawks and horses be;
And having thee, of all men's pride I boast—
Wretched in this alone, that thou mayst take,
All this away and me most wretched make.

Chinese gymnasts dilemma

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/IO...

Officials wanted the Olympics to be a coming out party for a new China. But while the Games have been a huge success, there is a legitimate possibility that China's legacy from Beijing '08 will be that of a massive government cover-up, not the magical Opening Ceremony or the transformation of Beijing or anything else positive.

All the good work China did to put on these Olympics could be forgotten because of an unnecessary, arrogant move by the government. Why risk everything to put a 14-year old in the competition when they could have replaced her with an of-age 16-year old gymnast? Sure, He is a better gymnast than the Chinese gymnasts who were eligible to compete, but with the judges they had at the Olympics, would it really have mattered?...

Think Progress: Krugman Reveals the NYT Urged Him to ‘Lay Off’ the Bush Administration (7/22/08) by Amanda Terkel
The New York Times columnist tells last month's Netroots convention of an experience not unlike that of journalists at several other corporate outlets:

I was never told to stop writing what I was writing. It was, however, made known to me that I was making management nervous. There were occasional, “Couldn’t you do more straight economics writing?” Pretty much the last time I heard that was in 2005, when I was sort of urged to lay off a bit. The words that stuck in my mind were, “The election settled some of these things.” Basically that all stopped with Katrina, actually.

Senator Robert F. Kennedy with Cesar Chávez and Helen Chávez

Cannonfire on Cheney: Oil + Impeachment = RICO

Oil + Impeachment
By Joseph Cannon | Cannonfire

Some people -- anti-Semites, mostly -- deny that oil theft motivated the decision to invade Iraq. All such "alternative" theories face one problem: The oil was, in fact, stolen -- and Cheney planned the theft well in advance.

Previously undisclosed Halliburton documents obtained by The Public Record confirm that controlling the world's second largest oil reserves was a top priority for the Bush administration. Additionally, the deal between the Department of Defense and Halliburton unit Kellogg, Brown & Root to operate Iraq's oil industry saved Halliburton from imminent bankruptcy.

The bankruptcy threat came from lawsuits over asbestos poisoning, which led to a form of cancer called mesothelioma. Those ultra-lucrative big money suits are the reason why lawyers have littered the landscape with so many ads trolling for mesothelioma sufferers. At one time, certain law firms would pay as much as ten dollars whenever someone clicked on a Google ad dealing with mesothelioma. (Most Google ads bring in pennies per click.) For a while, some bloggers went out of their way to mention the word "mesothelioma" in their posts, since Google's software automatically matches ads to certain key words. Words like "mesothelioma." Mesothelioma, mesothelioma, mesothelioma.

(Kidding. I don't even get the Google checks anymore, which were always quite miniscule, and I couldn't care less if they canceled the Adsense program on me. Let's get back to our story.)

A March 6, 2003 internal Pentagon e-mail sent by an Army Corps of Engineers official says "action" on a multibillion-dollar Halliburton contract was "coordinated" within Cheney's office.

The e-mail says Douglas Feith, the former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, received authorization from then Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz to “execute” the Restore Iraqi Oil contract to Halliburton in 2002.

Feith was one of the architects of the Iraq war who operated the Pentagon’s Office of Special Plans that exaggerated the Iraqi threat and provided the White House with bogus information about links between Iraq and al Qaeda.

Right there, you have sufficient grounds for immediate impeachment of Dick Cheney. Not just impeachment: A RICO suit.

George W. Bush to be impeached ?
Dennis Kucinich posts online impeachment petition

Senator (sic) Kucinich is at it again. This time he wants to deliver one million US signatures supporting the impeachment of George W. Bush to Nancy Pelosi by September 10.

US Representative Dennis Kucinich: "The decision before us is whether to demand accountability for one of the gravest injustices imaginable."

Ohio Senator (sic) Dennis Kucinich is not giving up his fight to have George W. Bush impeached during his last days in office. He has posted an online petition and invited U.S. citizens to assist in the collection of one million signatures by September 10 2008.

Speaker for the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has remained firm on her resolution that impeachment is "off the table." In August she told Time Magazine: "You can't talk about impeachment unless you have the facts, and you can't have the facts unless you have cooperation from the Administration. I think the Republicans would like nothing better than for us to focus on impeachment and take our eye off the ball of a progressive economic agenda."

But the possibility of confusing voters in the run-up to the Presidential elections has not detered Kucinich. Among his reasons for the campaign he lists that there should be a new standard set for the incoming administration and that the Bush Administration should be held accountable as soon as possible for the poor response to the catastrophe following Hurricane Katrina as well as the deaths in Iraq, both of American soldiers and Iraqi citizens that he estimates as being well over one million.

Now, 37 years later, the U.S. economy is on a similar perilous course, and Fed officials, gathering for their annual retreat at the base of the Tetons, are watching with their hearts in their throats -- aware of all the possible avalanches, crevices and cliffs that could send the economy dangerously off course.

the only problem is that the fed and neocons are the ones that put us where we are with their disastorous policies.

PETA And Homeland Security At The Border Fence

Can PETA get worse? Yes, yes they can!

Advertising on the border fence with offensive and racist ads is not a better way to promote animal rights.

Ironically, the Department of Homeland Security will not partner with PETA. The government will not allow the ads on the border fence.

Promoting animal rights with racism and sexism is not social justice for all.

Sex sells! is a poor excuse and not the way to promote animal rights and justice.

PETA can do better with their campaigns.

How about supporting animal rights and human rights?

---------

Excerpts:

While many view the contentious border fence as a government fiasco, an animal rights group sees a rare opportunity.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans today to announce an unusual marketing pitch to the U.S. government:

Rent us space on the fence for billboards warning illegal border crossers there is more to fear than the Border Patrol.

The billboards, in English and Spanish, would offer the caution:

"If the Border Patrol Doesn't Get You, the Chicken and Burgers Will — Go Vegan."

[along with the offensive ad graphic]

The Department of Homeland Security is working to meet a deadline to complete 670 miles of fencing and other barriers on the Southwest border by Dec. 31...

But a government spokesman in Washington said the request [from PETA] will be rejected because it would limit visibility through the fence. And Border Patrol does not allow advertising on its property or installations, the officials added.

"The fencing being put in place is, in many cases, mesh fencing to allow our officers to see what's happening on the other side and to better secure the border," said Michael Friel, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

fec gives mccain a pass on election financing

just saw an article in the paper that the fec unanimously gave mccain a pass on breaking finance laws.

aren't there any dems on the fec?

Morning

c-span is showing the meeting of the FEC now, arguing the loan to McCain.
Ellen Weintraub (D) is speaking now and she seems against it

just more spineless democrats

But, the F.E.C.’s lawyers, on a unanimous basis, recommended to the full commission that the Democratic position be rejected. Today, as the full commission met, it unanimously followed its lawyers’ advice. And the commission did not pass judgment on the underlying terms of the loan.

Two Democrats on the commission voiced concerns about the terms of the loan agreement. Commissioner Cynthia Bauerly called it “murky.” But, in the end, the two voted to support the F.E.C.’s advisory opinion issued by its lawyers.

Well she pooped out

and voted for. It was unanimous. Damn

It was unanimous. Damn

all i can figure is that they thought they might be keeping an option open for a future dem since they just converted rule breaking into a valid financing strategery.

Your Own Private Ohio: Seven

Your Own Private Ohio: Seven Ways Your Vote Might Not Count This November

By Steven Rosenfeld, AlterNet. Posted August 22, 2008.

Some of the most serious election protection problems can be discovered and fixed before the presidential voting begins.

While many voting rights activists are focused on stopping potential problems on Election Day, there are several milestones between now and the 2008 presidential vote that would preview problems with voting on Nov. 4.

What voters often do not know is that long lines or delays in polling place voting can result from many factors -- some administrative, some technical, some partisan. Many of the problems that arise on Election Day not only can be identified before voting in November, they can be resolved by election officials. The following issues will directly impact how voters are accommodated.

Voter Purges

According to the federal law that governs how people may be removed from voter lists, the last day that most registered voters can be purged is 90 days before an election, which would have been Aug. 5 for the presidential election. However, some states are not following the process in the National Voter Registration Act, according to voting rights attorneys. Moreover, because purges are often conducted secretly, people who do not call local election offices to confirm their registration status may discover later this fall that they cannot vote.

Solution: Voters, particularly those who have not voted in recent years, should call their local election office to confirm they are registered at their current address. If they are not properly registered, they should update their voter registration. This must be done before registration closes, which is the first week in October in 27 states. Advocacy groups can facilitate this by accessing a voter registration list and reviewing it with community activists. (Editor's note: Web sites and experts to help voters are listed below.)

Unprocessed Voter Registrations

After the Democratic Convention, the Obama campaign will launch a national voter registration drive to bring millions of new voters to the polls in November, according to top campaign officials. This could be the largest voter drive in decades. In previous years, local election officials have complained about receiving too many registration forms at the last minute to verify before Election Day. In two Ohio cities in 2004, Cleveland and Toledo, boxes of registrations went unprocessed by Election Day.

After criticizing Obama for wanting a timetable, Bush agrees to a timetable

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iraq and the U.S. pushed close to a deal Thursday setting a course for American combat troops to pull out of major Iraqi cities by next June, with a broader withdrawal from the long and costly war by 2011.

Analysis: Iraq deal hovers

Analysis: Iraq deal hovers over campaign By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 40 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate John McCain prides himself on being gung-ho about pursuing the Iraq war even if it hurts him politically. Recent events in Baghdad threaten to put him still farther out on a limb, however, as the Bush administration works toward a troop withdrawal schedule that is more aggressive than McCain envisions.

Democrat Barack Obama says a McCain presidency would amount to a third term for President Bush, whose popularity approaches historic lows. If the Baghdad negotiations appear headed to fruition while Iraq remains relatively stable — big ifs — some say Obama may be able to push even harder, saying McCain would out-Bush Bush if he had his way.

On the other hand, if Americans believe the war is winding down in an acceptable way, it could significantly reduce the importance of an issue central to Obama's rise to political prominence.

Iraq and the Bush administration have reached a preliminary agreement to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraqi cities, where most of the fighting has taken place, by next June. It would link troop reductions to achievement of certain undisclosed security milestones. The deal also would require the endorsement of top Iraqi leaders and the Iraqi parliament, which is far from certain.

McCain repeatedly has said that events on the ground in Iraq should dictate any pullout schedule. He once suggested, however, that troops would come home, victorious, by the end of his first term, in early 2013.

Obama has set a goal of removing most U.S. combat troops within 16 months of taking office, or by the spring of 2010. He says he would listen to advice from military leaders before deciding.

U.S. warned Georgia about

U.S. warned Georgia about Russia
Posted: 06:21 AM ET
MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) — The United States urged Georgia “not to do this” before it sent troops into its breakaway region of South Ossetia — an action that triggered a Russian invasion of Georgia, the U.S. ambassador to Russia told a Russian newspaper.

Ambassador John Beryle also told the business daily Kommersant that Russia responded in a “legitimate” way to Georgia’s initial attack on Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia, though he went on to say that Russia went too far in its military incursion into Georgia.

His comments represent a public acknowledgment from a senior U.S. official that Russia had some justification for its initial response to Georgia’s attack on South Ossetia. CNN confirmed the ambassador’s response with the U.S. Embassy in Russia.

Up to the last minute, Beryle said, the United States “urged Georgia not to do this,” not to resort to force in its breakaway region of South Ossetia.

The Shiite-run Iraqi government “is driving out many leaders of Sunni citizen patrols” that have allied with the U.S., known as the Awakening. “In restive Diyala Province, United States and Iraqi military officials say there were orders to arrest hundreds of members” of the Awakening “as part of large security operations by the Iraqi military.” “The state cannot accept the Awakening,” one Parliament member said.

Finally waking up..... 20% increase....good!

A new Pew study finds that 50 percent of conservatives “think churches and other places of worship should stay out of social and political matters, up from 30 percent four years ago.” For the first time since Pew started this survey 12 years ago, a majority of Americans — 52 percent — also hold that view.

The Bush administration

The Bush administration “proposed stronger job protections for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions because of religious or moral objections.” Jessica Arons of the Center for American Progress writes that the regulation could be used to block access to contraception.

Got to change your evil ways, baby....

Tackling the “unsexy topic of our soaring national debt,” a new movie called I.O.U.S.A. warns: “America must mend its spendthrift ways or face an economic disaster of epic proportions.” The New York Times reports that it’s “yet another documentary that everyone should see but most will not.”

Kill the good programs, pay for the bad...

Despite President Bush’s promise to double the size of the Peace Corps, officials say the agency “is preparing to cut back on new volunteers and consolidate recruiting offices as it pares other costs amid an increasingly tight budget.” The budget shortfall “can be attributed to the declining value of the dollar overseas and the rising cost of energy and other commodities.”

What can we do to save the Polar Bears?

“Federal wildlife monitors spotted nine polar bears in one day swimming in open ocean off Alaska’s northwest coast, and environmental groups say the event is a strong signal that diminished sea ice brought on by warming has put U.S. bears at risk of drowning or dying from effects of fatigue.”

This list is bogus anyway. It's just to keep us afraid!

The government’s terror watch list system “is hobbled by technology challenges, and the $500 million program designed to upgrade it is on the verge of collapse, according to a preliminary congressional investigation.” The report finds that the system, which includes as many as 1 million names, also “has problems identifying true potential terrorists.”

Norm Coleman: "I hava da buyer's remorse"

Coleman wouldn't attend convention either

"Among Republican senators, an invitation to the party's convention next month in Minneapolis might just be the easiest ticket to score in town.

Amid news several Senate Republicans have already backed out of attending the quadannual event, Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman made clear Monday he wouldn't attend either — if the convention was anywhere else but his backyard."

"Coleman's comments come only days after Pat Roberts, the two-term senator from Kansas and former Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, announced he's skipping the convention to instead focus on his tougher-than-expected reelection bid."

Sounds like Normy doesn't like the idea that the Dream Team has been invited to speak at his barbecue. So much for party solidarity. Reaping what you sow 101, my friendsssszz. Home field advantage DENIED. Hope Franken is smart enough to jump on Coleman with both feet and underscore Normy's quandry in an ad or two.

McCain Veep Pick Leaked to Time Mag?

Interesting move form Warry McSame.

McCain camp: A leak might just create enough smoke to quell the hornets still stinging our Grampy about his property woes.

Public perception: It makes his campaign look even further disorganized and, well, leaky, while Obama's ship is looking mighty tight.

I've noticed the news anchors (on CNN, at least) are getting increasingly testy about having to fly their holding pattern blind. Watching the media squirm is the best part of this whole text message idea!

Meanwhile the Mccain camp has to play the VP card to counter the heat he's taking for being a bazillionaire.

Happy Friday!
