Barack Obama calls John McCain 'out of touch' on the economy
KANSAS CITY, MO. -- Democrat Barack Obama, focusing on the economy during a campaign stop at an airplane plant, said today that Republican rival John McCain was "out of touch" with voters on checkbook issues.
"If you didn't know how many homes you have, no wonder you think the economy is sound," Obama said, referring to McCain's recent confusion about how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own. "I don't think he gets it. He is out of touch. I don't think he realizes what ordinary Americans are going through. I don't think the Bush administration realizes what ordinary Americans are going through."
Obama vowed to end President Bush's rollback of constitutional curbs on government wiretapping and the denial of Geneva Convention protections for war-on-terror detainees. Obama promised that, if elected, he would instruct his staff to "go through every single executive order that George Bush issued" and restore protections.
"We're going to get our government back on track," he said.
The Illinois senator called for investment in the country's infrastructure, saying he hoped to shift some of the $10 billion a month spent in Iraq to highway, bridge and airplane construction at home.
"We need American taxpayer money rebuilding America and putting people back to work," Obama said...........

Judge Denies Stay; Miers
Judge Denies Stay; Miers Must Appear to Answer HJC's Subpoena
By Kate Klonick - August 26, 2008, 2:22PM
A district court judge denied Harriet Miers and Joshua Bolten's request for a stay on their Congressional testimony pending the appeal of the recent decision in HJC v. Harriet Miers et al. The decision means that Miers will have to appear in response to the House Judiciary Committee's subpoena for testimony.
From the ruling:
Accordingly, the Court will deny the Executive's request for a stay. Hence, the Executive should respond to the document aspect of the subpoenas by producing non-privileged material and identifying more specifically the materials it is withholding on a claim of executive privilege.
But it is on Ms. Miers's appearance that the dispute principally focuses. This decision should not, however, foreclose the parties' continuing attempts to reach a negotiated solution. Both sides indicated that discussions regarding an accommodation have resumed.
The judge, the Honorable John Bates, has mentioned before that he would really appreciate it if these two parties tried to keep every little squabble out of the court room, and that seemed to be the gist of his ruling:
Had the litigants indicated that a negotiated solution was foreseeable in the near future, the Court may have stayed its hand in the hope that further intervention in this dispute by the Article III branch would not be necessary.
As it stands, however, the Court must decide the questions presented to it. But there is still ample time for the parties to reach an accommodation. The Court's July 31, 2008 Order does not compel Ms. Miers to appear at any particular date.
Technically, this leaves open the possibility of continued negotiations, but considering this administration's history of fighting subpoenas, we're not holding our breath for an out-of-court resolution.
Late update: House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) has responded to the ruling:
"Today's ruling clearly rejects the White House's efforts to run out the clock on the Committee's investigation of DOJ politicization this Congress. I am heartened that Judge Bates recognized that the public interest in this matter is best served by the furtherance of the Committee's investigation," Conyers said. "The Committee intends to promptly schedule a hearing with Ms. Miers and stands ready as always to consider any reasonable offer of accommodation with the White House."

Sleep-Walking Through 3 AM
Sleep-Walking Through 3 AM Call?
From ABC ...
In a presidential race marked by references to preparedness in the face of the 3 a.m. call, the revelation that presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain has taken the sleeping pill Ambien during his travels raises concerns that the rare side effects of the medication could impair his judgment.
"Taking more than the recommended dosage of Ambien or combining it with other sedative-hypnotics for example, alcohol may result in amnesia, fugue states and sleep walking," said Dr. Peter A. Fotinakes, medical director of the St. Joseph Sleep Disorders Center in Orange, Calif. "Used appropriately, Ambien is a relatively safe medication."
Though rare, such side effects associated with Ambien have made headlines.

DENVER — Bill Clinton appeared to undermine Sen. Barack Obama again Tuesday.
The former president, speaking in Denver, posed a hypothetical question in which he seemed to suggest that that the Democratic Party was making a mistake in choosing Obama as its presidential nominee.
He said: "Suppose you're a voter, and you've got candidate X and candidate Y. Candidate X agrees with you on everything, but you don't think that candidate can deliver on anything at all. Candidate Y you agree with on about half the issues, but he can deliver. Which candidate are you going to vote for?"
Then, perhaps mindful of how his off-the-cuff remarks might be taken, Clinton added after a pause: "This has nothing to do with what's going on now."TheHill

Romney, Pawlenty on attack
Romney, Pawlenty on attack in GOP V.P. tryouts
Romney, Pawlenty play attack roles in Denver this week as McCain weighs running mate choice
LIZ SIDOTI
AP News
Aug 26, 2008 12:36 EST
Final auditions for Republican John McCain's running mate, perhaps? Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was in Denver on Tuesday to criticize Democrat Barack Obama on behalf of the GOP nominee-in-waiting. And another Republican said to be in serious contention for the No. 2 slot, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, was scheduled to play attack dog in the Democratic convention city on Thursday.
The Arizona senator is expected to name his vice presidential pick in the coming days, maybe even while Obama is holding court in Denver. Rallies in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan, perhaps involving the complete GOP ticket, are planned for the run-up to the GOP convention that starts Monday in St. Paul, Minn.
Romney, a former McCain rival, would bring economic credentials and a battle-honed pitch from the rough-and-tumble GOP primary to the team, while Pawlenty, a longtime McCain ally, would bring a solid conservative resume and blue-collar roots.
But both men also present drawbacks for the GOP ticket.
Romney's enormous wealth could exacerbate Democratic attacks on McCain's gaffe over not knowing how many houses he owns. Romney also made unflattering comments against McCain in the primary that the opposition certainly would use against the ticket. Pawlenty's relative youth, at age 47, could highlight McCain's distinction of potentially being the oldest first-term elected president; he turns 72 on Friday. And Pawlenty isn't as seasoned as others, including Democratic vice presidential pick Joe Biden, in the attack role a running mate typically plays.
Yet, both Romney and Pawlenty are said to be under serious consideration.
However, it's possible that McCain could make a nontraditional selection for the GOP ticket, such as abortion-rights backers Tom Ridge, the former Pennsylvania governor, or Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. Both are close friends of the candidate.
Either of those options, however, would inflame the GOP's conservative base and risk party-splitting acrimony at the Republican convention next week. Either move also would give Democrats a ready opening to attack the GOP for being divided, much like the story line McCain's campaign is stoking in Denver by openly courting Hillary Rodham Clinton's supporters.
On the other hand, such an out-of-the-box choice could send a message to the public at large — I'm no George W. Bush, and I'm no partisan — as McCain seeks to shake the association with the unpopular GOP president and bolster his argument that he would put "country first," ahead of politics.

Obama Response Ad Ties Ayers
Obama Response Ad Ties Ayers Swift-Boating Spot Directly To McCain
By Greg Sargent - August 25, 2008, 3:43PM
Here's video of the ad we reported on below that the Obama campaign is running in Ohio responding to the earlier Swift-Boating spot tying Obama to former Weatherman Bill Ayers...
Video at link
"With all our problems, why is John McCain talking about the sixties, trying to link Barack Obama to radical Bill Ayers?" the spot says, suggesting that McCain himself is behind the Ayers spot. "McCain knows Obama denounced Ayers' crimes, committed when Obama was just eight years old."
As we noted below, the Swift-Boating group airing the initial Ayers spot, the American Issues Project, has made good on its vow to spend nearly $3 million to run the spot. And it's running in Ohio, Pennslyvania, Wisconsin, and Virginia. It's unclear as of yet whether the ad is running in the other three states where the Ayers spot is up.
The Ayers spot and the size of the expenditure make it tougher to dismiss the Obama camp's warnings about the coming Swift-Boat campaign as mere wolf-crying. And Obama's response ad is another sign of the Obama camp's determination to signal that he won't be Swift-Boated -- both because the Obama camp wants to avoid John Kerry's fate, and because Obama advisers want to signal to jittery Democrats that they're poised to respond aggressively.

An article from this past May re: McCain
With friends like these ...
McCain finds his own radical friend
Steve Chapman
Chicago Tribune
May 4, 2008
...
How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns -- including $1,000 this year.
Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."
Which principles would those be? The ones that told Liddy it was fine to break into the office of the Democratic National Committee to plant bugs and photograph documents? The ones that made him propose to kidnap anti-war activists so they couldn't disrupt the 1972 Republican National Convention? The ones that inspired him to plan the murder (never carried out) of an unfriendly newspaper columnist?
...
In 1994, after the disastrous federal raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, he gave some advice to his listeners: "Now if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. ... Kill the sons of bitches."

"Hello to our friends and fans in domestic surveillance."
Nice article about Rachel
In a year bursting with memorable moments in televised political punditry, the first may have come on January 8, when MSNBC commentator Rachel Maddow explained one of the quick-spreading theories behind Hillary Clinton's victory in New Hampshire, a surprise win that had knocked many of Maddow's on-air colleagues on their asses.
"You want to know who they're blaming for women voters breaking for Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama?" a delighted Maddow asked co-panelist Pat Buchanan and host Chris Matthews, her eyes flashing. "They're blaming Chris Matthews! People are citing specifically Chris ... not only for his own views but also as a symbol of what the mainstream media has done to Hillary Clinton."
Matthews sputtered dismissively, but Maddow wasn't done yet. "People feel the media is piling on Hillary Clinton," she said, "and they're coming to her defense with their votes." For Matthews, who'd been enjoying near rapturous pleasure over the presumptive early-season thumping of his personal hobgoblin, there could not have been worse news than that his own commentary might have paved the way for Clinton's triumph. Yet here was just this headline, delivered by Maddow, looking like Sylvester the Cat, practically licking yellow feathers from the corners of her mouth.
"I didn't mean it in a mean way at all," says Maddow over breakfast on a summer day many months and many MSNBC promotions away from that indelible January night. "But I knew that it was just going to blow his mind."
Matthews is far from the first talking head to get this treatment. Long before this primary season, clips of Maddow, an Air America host often invited on cable news shows as a ballsy gremlin of the left, zipped around the Internet. Her specialty was making Tucker Carlson's head explode, or getting under Buchanan's skin until all he could do was gibber at her about socialism. But presidential election cycles provide the hot klieg lights under which character actors mature into media leading ladies, and at 35, with fewer than five years of national broadcast experience under her belt, Rachel Maddow is the explosive star of the season. She's gone from being a popular guest analyst on MSNBC to an exclusive commentator to a regular guest host for the network's prize pig, Countdown With Keith Olbermann. Now there is increasing clang and clamor over the possibility that she will get her own show on MSNBC.
What's remarkable about Maddow's ascension is not its velocity-Hurricane Katrina made Anderson Cooper in less than a week-but the shifts in media it may demarcate. Maddow is one of the few left-liberal women to bust open the world of TV punditry, which has made icons of right-wing commentators like Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin. Unlike her beautiful, bilious conservative female counterparts or the cocksure boys-on-the-bus analysts, however, Maddow didn't get here by bluster and bravado but with a combination of crisp thinking and galumphing good cheer. Remarkably, this season's discovery isn't a glossy matinee idol or a smooth-talking partisan hack but a PhD Rhodes scholar lesbian policy wonk who started as a prison AIDS activist.

Hagan Grabs Lead Over Dole in North Carolina
A new Public Policy Polling survey in North Carolina shows Kay Hagan (D) leading Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), 42% to 39%, after trailing by as much as 14 points two months ago.
The poll is the third in the last week to show the race a dead heat.
Key findings: "There's not much doubt where the momentum is coming from. 69% of voters in the state have seen the television ads about Elizabeth Dole's #93 ranking for effectiveness in the US Senate, and among those folks Hagan has an even wider 45-39 lead. Dole's saving grace is voters who don't watch much tv- she leads 45-34 with those who have not seen the ad."

PPP Poll: Obama Stays
PPP Poll: Obama Stays Competitive in North Carolina
The latest Public Policy Polling survey in North Carolina finds Sen. John McCain just edging out Sen. Barack Obama, 45% to 42%.
Analysis: "One of two things is going to have to happen for Obama to win the state: he's going to have to up his share of the white vote, probably by bringing out voters under 30 in extreme record numbers, or he's going to need black voters to turn out at a rate disproportionate to their representation in the overall population, something that would be virtually unprecedented."

A new Harvard Institute of Politics poll of young voters shows Sen. Barack Obama with a huge 23 point lead over Sen. John McCain, 55% to 32% with 13% undecided.
This lead is virtually unchanged since the last poll in the spring before the Democratic nomination was settled.
Key finding: "Overall, 62% of young voters report that they are excited (23% very excited, 39% somewhat excited) about the upcoming election, including 69% of 18 to 24 year olds currently in college."

Why was Cheney aide in Georgia before the conflict?
The LA Times reports that Joseph R. Wood, Vice President Cheney’s deputy assistant for national security affairs, “was in Georgia shortly before the war began.” James Gerstenzang wonders what Wood was doing there. Sergei Markov — a senior political scientist who is close to Vladimir Putin — claimed recently that the war was “part of a plot by Dick Cheney” to help John McCain. But media reports indicate that a “parade” of U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, had warned Georgia President Mikheil Saakashvili not to instigate the conflict with Russia.

In my own travels--and travails--of getting lost and drunk and the like, the only issue that keeps coming up is this "Hillary question." Personally, I think that people who are "still angry" about Hillary Clinton and are considering "withholding their support" from Obama are moral and political idiots in exactly the same vein as those people who voted for Ralph Nader in swing states in 2000 were. More so, actually. The Democrats had a primary, and Obama won it fair and square. He didn't cheat. He didn't do any of the things that Hillary Clinton diehards are are so angry about. He just won and she lost. That's how these things are supposed to work.
These Hillary diehards act as if they are making some sort of point, but the only point they are making is that they would prefer to see John McCain be President--and run a government that is opposed to everything they say they favor (here's where the Nader comparison comes in) because they think politics is a form of therapy rather than a matter of compromise, coalition and, ultimately, victorious combination.
If you talk to one of these people for more than two minutes, they immediately cease to make any sense. But the press doesn't talk to them for more than two minutes at a time because all they need is that one self-serving, conflict-building quote to give them what they need to support their big--and, right now, virtually only--story line. What's more, the Obama people are under orders--quite understandably--not to anger these nut cases, because, sad to say, you can't win an election without stupid people voting for you. So nobody says it aloud, but everyone says it privately. And that, rather than what you hear on your TVs all day, is the real news of this place, so far. And so the charade continues until we have some real news. In the meantime, I'm off to the HuffPo "Oasis" for a massage and a facial. Perhaps there's a story there...

Hon,
I am so sorry to hear about your mom and what you are going through right now.
Hospice is a wonderful gift and working with them is going to be the hardest but most rewarding experience for you and your family during this most difficult time.
I went through it 2 years ago this month, and I will never forget how much they were able to help me give my mom the one thing I promised I would make sure she had - dignity and peace.
Know that you and your family will be in my thoughts and that I am sending you the inner strength that I found to help you through what you are facing. Know that you will find your way, and that you are doing the right thing for your mom, and she will forever be grateful for your choice.
Take good care of yourself, and remember to try and get a few minutes each day for YOU, so you can continue to give of yourself in the way that you wish to.
Hang in there and take each day as it comes for all that it brings to you.

But the poll at the onset of the Democratic National Convention shows Florida voters want a Democrat in the White House by a 44 to 39 percent margin and consider the economy the most important election issue.
On those issues, Floridians say they trust Obama 46 to 42 percent to handle the energy crisis and 46 to 44 percent to handle the economy.
"In a nation ruled by swine, all pigs are upwardly mobile—and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. We owe that to ourselves and our crippled self-image as something better than a nation of panicked sheep."
With the polls looking so screwy and not jibing with the general
consensus, I am beginning to think EEP is right. The MSMs are tweaking the polls and setting us up for the Diebold shuffle.
I know it sounds stupid, but I still say the betting line is far more representative of the way the people will vote.
Right now its about 60-40 Obama at worst.
I just got back from the dentist
She's a Republican and her answer to everything is drill here drill now pay me. She can't wait to vote for McCain because he's pro-life. Not real smart dentists here but she's a fine person albeit a brain washed one.
She's eleven weeks pregnant. I told her that when I met her she was voting for George last time and since then he has laid a huge debt for her unborn baby. Don't you regret that vote. She agreed and called him a mistake but that Republicans still stand for good things because they are pro-life. That's when I busted out, the line that the GOP had a lock on the presidency and the congress for six years and didn't touch the subject. Then I told her that they won't do a thing but they will use it as a wedge issue just to get the vote. She had no answer but boy did she scrub my teeth hard.
They probably poll in Fla with the same method ...
...they let people vote.

Nice Nando.....
You are a brave man. I see many root canals in your future....
Republican's need to define "pro-life"
They may be "pro-prebirth-life", but once those feet hit the ground they are fair game for electric chairs, lethal injections, busted levees, enemies bullets, no access to health-care and on and on....
If they eliminated abortions they'd lose the wedge and they can't have that now can they?

yesterday started slow too but really got going later. I'm so worried about Hillary speaking.
I still say the betting line is far more representative
That's the only point of optimism I still have. Thankfully, the betting line isn't following the "polls."
Still I expect defeat. Months ago I anticipated McLiar would have firm lead over Hillary by now. Barack surprised me though.
I don't know what's up the polls. Supposedly, they are close here Michigan. But, I live in the 2nd most conservative part of the state. I drive over eight hundred miles a week and yet I only know of 2 (yea 2) McLiar yard signs. Obama signs are everywhere. Same with bumper stickers. Obama stickers everywhere-- all classes of vehicles. You might see 1 McLiar sticker a day. Maybe, the Rethugs won't change their vote, but are afraid to brag about their candidate. I don't know.
If McLiar does win-- I can't imagine-- I bet his approval ratings will be lower than Bush's in eighteen months. By then the PUMAS and the racist working class voters will realize what an incredible mistake they made.

Lobbyists are good for America. Many Texans are "special" that way.
Ed Rendell
Doing a good job of blaming Bush/Cheney for the Oil problem and said McCain would do the same!
All of these speakers
Yea, they even managed to muzzel Boxer.
"Sisters are doing for themselves?"
If I'm laughing, I know the Rethugs are.
Rachel made the best point re: Hillary's speech tonight
Her line of thinking was:
1. McCain hijacked her message
2. McCain is falsely sending the message Hillary supports him
Rachel said there is no other alternative for Hillary than to open the XXX-Large Can O' Whup Ass on McCain. The other's on the panel were too cowardly to jump in and agree.
Yes Fernando I do to. If Hillary comes out and plays "firm but civil" she's dead to me forever. This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no time to kiss their ass again.

SEIU taking on unfaithful Democrats after election
DENVER - The head of a powerful service workers union threatened Tuesday to unleash money from a $10 million "accountability" fund to defeat any political figure - Democrats included - who breaks promises to organized labor.
"Any Democrat - or Republican - who said they were going to support us on health care or free choice and turns against us is going to paint a target" on their backs, Andy Stern, president of the powerful Service Employees International Union, told The Associated Press in an interview. "...We're not going to just win this election and hope Barack Obama does well. People want something to happen."
The SEIU intends to keep a close watch on candidates to make promises to support changes in health care and accessibility to union representation in the workplace. It already has helped unseat one moderate Democrat, former Rep. Al Wynn of Maryland, by supporting his Democratic primary opponent - Donna Edwards.
"Our members are sick and tired of politicians who are after their votes the day before the election and after their throats" later, Stern said........

"McCain is falsely sending the message Hillary supports him"
How long will it be before Republican lizard brains start popping synapses?
The woman that was supposed to mobilize the Republican base to the polls in Novemeber out of the sheer unadulterated hatred for her, is now being purported as a positive for the McCain campaign...I'm sure the base is loving having that vision in their living rooms...

Kinda funny, how we've known for over five years that most of the Gitmo detainess are "no threat." And yet, there they are. In cages. We all know it. And there they stay. And remember how we almost overthrown by those hapless, Haitain, Rostafarian, al Queda killers in FLA. I bet the're cages too. We're toast. Face it.

There is too much talk about Republicans
There is too much talk about Republicans and McCain during the DEMOCRATIC convention! Damn that Hillary and the media that is making the story even bigger. Obama should be flooding the airways with his message. But it's all about McCain and the Clintons. I think I have seen it all now!

The mainstream media is advocating on behalf of the Republican Party. Unless we are willing to take a strong stand against these tactics, we will have another psychopath for president. I think we should designate a day-and call the cable & satellite companies. Inform them that we will cancel our subscriptions.

My one and only fan weighs a few laughs against weeks of caring for her very sick mom.
I will include impeachnow's testimonial on the jacket of my next book: "Bait is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick."
I wish that impeachnow did not have such an emotionally gut-wrenching task. The only thing worse than the end is having to be the responsible person with no hope of accomplishing more than the least of the worst until the end.
My bad tD...
They still just seemed "plastic" in their demeanor like, uh, uh, uh Oh! Now I know, just like Republicans! If I'd been a POW I'd have an excuse for my behavior but I wasn't so admit my mistake and try to do better next time.
