China announces permissible levels of melamine in milk
...
Government officials say the melamine was added to milk products by suppliers to artificially boost protein count in milk that had been diluted. Babies and children who regularly drink the tainted milk can develop kidney stones after several months.

On Wednesday, Health Ministry officials said at a news conference that traces of melamine are found in many food products because melamine is used to make plastic, and can seep into food from packaging. A certain amount of melamine can be tolerated, they said.

Bomber attacks Iraqi courthouse
A suicide bomber has killed eleven people outside a court in the Iraqi city of Baquba.

More than 20 people were wounded in the attack in the provincial capital of Diyala on Wednesday morning.

Hoshyar Zebari, the foreign minister, said Washington and Baghdad are now "very close" to an agreement on the presence of American troops in the country beyond 2008.

"There have been new ideas and new language that could be acceptable, but no final decision has been made. This needs some bold political decisions now," Zebari said on Tuesday.

Zebari was speaking at a news conference with John Negroponte, the visiting US deputy secretary of state, shortly after two bombs went off just outside the Green Zone, leaving at least seven people, including an Iraqi soldier, injured.

Give the McCain camp credit. They're pretty upfront with what McCain's new mortgage-buy-up plan is really all about.

From the McCain campaign website:

John McCain will direct his Treasury Secretary to implement an American Homeownership Resurgence Plan (McCain Resurgence Plan) to keep families in their homes, avoid foreclosures, save failing neighborhoods, stabilize the housing market and attack the roots of our financial crisis.
Incidentally, isn't this the third different mortgage relief "plan" McCain has announced this year?

Pakistan has ordered the deportation of about 50,000 Afghan refugees from a troubled tribal region amid a major military offensive against al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

Biden calls Palin's criticism 'mildly dangerous'

Biden says Palin's criticism of Obama ties to '60s radical an effort to inject fear into race

Staff

Oct 08, 2008 07:33 EST

Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said Wednesday that Republican rival Sarah Palin is injecting fear and loathing into their campaign with her criticism that Barack Obama is friends with a terrorist. He called the effort "mildly dangerous."

Palin began last weekend telling supporters that Obama is close to '60s-era radical William Ayers, a founder of the violent group the Weather Underground. After first claiming that Obama had been "palling around with terrorists," she changed the thrust of the attack to say that Obama's ties to Ayers showed bad judgment.

Obama and Ayers live in the same Chicago neighborhood and have served together on community boards. The Illinois senator, who was a young child when the Weathermen were planting bombs in protest of the Vietnam War, has denounced Ayers' radical views and actions. His campaign has said that Obama didn't know of Ayers' past when they first met.

In Florida on Monday, Palin's remarks about Obama and Ayers elicited waves of booing from supporters. One person at a rally shouted "Kill him!" according to a Washington Post report. A sheriff who introduced Palin at a rally referred to the Democratic candidate as "Barack Hussein Obama."

Biden, appearing Wednesday on CBS' "The Early Show," called Palin's remarks about Obama and Ayers "over the top."

"You know, the idea here that somehow these guys are once again injecting fear and loathing into this campaign is ... I think it's mildly dangerous. I mean, here you have out there these kinds of, you know, incitements out there — guy introducing Barack using his middle name as if it's some epitaph or something," Biden said, apparently confusing the words "epitaph" and "epithet."

"It's just malarkey, flat malarkey," Biden said of the Ayers criticism. "The guy Barack Obama is going to turn and ask opinion to is me, not that guy."

Biden returned to the campaign trail on Wednesday after spending the last few days mourning the death of his mother-in-law.

Did McCain suggest he was going to reduce Social Security benefits?

If McCain thinks Treasury should buy all bad mortgages, then why didn't he say so last week? What is a bad mortgage? If that refers to homes whose value is less than the mortgage debt, then that may amount to as many as 10 to 20 million homes before prices hit bottom. So does McCain imagine that Treasury will spend another two to four trillion dollars -- perhaps what it would take to fulfill his commitment? And would Treasury then be the creditor of millions of Americans, forcing foreclosures and auctioning houses? Does Paulson support this plan? Does anyone? Will McCain support or explain it tomorrow?

Does McCain really not have any prioritization of his goals?

Biden: Palin Must Condemn

Biden: Palin Must Condemn Ugly Slurs From Supporters
By Greg Sargent - October 8, 2008, 11:31AM
The Huffington Post catches the key moments from today's morning shows: Joe Biden threw down the gauntlet with Sarah Palin and demanded -- twice -- that she condemn the ugly slurs her supporters have been trafficking in at rallies.

"I watched the news and I heard a couple people hollering from the audience, semi-vile things about 'terrorists,' things like that," Biden said on NBC's Today Show. "The idea that a leading American politician who might be vice president of the United States would not just stop mid-sentence and turn and condemn that -- it's just a slippery slope, it's a place that we shouldn't be going."

On the other hand, it's pretty remarkable that she's a veep candidate at all, so we should hardly be expecting her to act like one. Meanwhile, here's Biden on Good Morning America:

"I mean, some of the stuff she's saying about Barack Obama and the stuff that people are yelling from the crowd, if she hears it, she should be at least be saying, whoa, whoa, whoa, that's overboard. But this is volatile stuff."

Of course, Palin herself is stoking such sentiments, so it seems unlikely that she'll suddenly demonstrate some decency and condemn them. Can't hurt for Biden to take on a leading role in pointing out Palin-McCain's daily descent to ever-lower depths of ugliness, though.

When melamine was killing my kitty kat -

and before the melamine-contaminated wheat gluten from China was identified as the culprit - i examined labels of all the cat foods i'd been feeding her over the previous months - the one common ingredient in all of them was 'wheat gluten'. (this was about two years ago)

the next piece of the puzzle was that nearly every american pet-food manufacturer bought their wheat gluten from Menu Foods, of Canada. Menu Foods bought their wheat gluten from China.

The addition of melamine to bulk wheat gluten is not accidental. The addition of melamine creates a false protein spike in the spectral analysis used in food product quality control.

In other words, the addition of melamine makes a food product appear to have greater nutritional value by the appearance of a higher protein content.

Melamine is a toxic 'additive'... an 'extender' that increases the volume/weight of a product without appearing to lower the nutritional (protein) content.

Trooper-Gate Probe Could Carry Weight, After All
By Zachary Roth - October 8, 2008, 11:01AM
It looked a couple weeks ago as if the McCain campaign's effort to shut down Trooper-Gate had largely succeeded.

But not so fast. Steve Branchflower, the independent investigator on the case, will release his report Friday, and, as the Anchorage Daily News notes, he will have heard from almost every key witness -- with the important exception of Governor Palin herself. As a result, says the paper, Branchflower "appears to have the makings of a fairly complete account."

Over the weekend, a judge ruled that seven witnesses, all government employees, must comply with subpoenas to testify. Those witnesses have made plans to answer Branchflower's questions this week, under oath. And it was announced Monday night that Todd Palin will, through his lawyer, provide written answers to questions.

Walt Monegan, the former public safety commissioner whose firing by Governor Palin is at the center of the inquiry, told the ADN that he spent nearly a day answering Branchflower's questions, and also handed over some documents.

A legislative panel will meet at 1pm EST Friday, to receive Branchflower's report. But the GOP effort to resist the probe has one more lifeline. Lawyers for a group of Republican legislators will try at 7pm EST today to convince the state Supreme Court to halt the probe, after a lower court rejected their suit last week. Stay tuned...

Lieberman: ‘I Worry

Lieberman: ‘I Worry About’ Whether Obama Has ‘The Right Stuff To Bomb Iran’
In an interview with the right-wing magazine Newsmax yesterday, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) called Sen. Barack Obama’s worldview “naive.” Asked if Obama had “the right stuff to bomb Iran if it came to that level,” Lieberman replied, “I worry about that“:

ASHLEY MARTELLA: Alirght, Iran has sworn to exterminate Israel as well as attack the United States. Does Barack Obama have the right stuff to bomb Iran if it came to that level?

SEN. JOE LIEBERMAN: Well, I worry about that. I worry that Sen. Obama’s world view is naive. Sen. McCain has been around awhile. He’s learned some things. I’ve traveled the world with him a lot. He’s, he will be the kind of president who our allies will trust, but who our enemies will fear. And in a dangerous world, al Qaeda, Iran, Iran trying to get a nuclear weapons, we want a president who our enemies will fear. I don’t believe that Sen. Obama will be that kind of president. I believe he’s naive to think that people like Ahmadinejad and Tehran Iran will somehow become America’s friend just by…

MARTELLA: Talking to them unilaterally.

LIEBERMAN: Talking to them in a warm embrace and a cup of tea. It’s not going to work that way. Sen. McCain knows there’s evil as well good in the world and he’ll confront evil directly in order to protect our security and that of our allies.

Watch it (starts around 4:45): at link

Lieberman has never been shy about how the prospect of bombing Iran is a major issue for him. In June 2007, he declared that “we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians.” In May 2008, he said that airstrikes against Iran were “a distinct possibility.”

As for McCain, in April 2007, he sang, “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.”

David Petraeus, who has objected to using the word “victory” for war in Iraq.

McCain Lobbies For Taiwan

McCain Lobbies For Taiwan Arms Sales After Taiwan Signs Lobbying Contract With His Adviser’s Firm
The Bush administration is currently in discussions to send $6 billion in arms to Taiwan. Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) sent a letter to President Bush, urging him to “add more submarines and new fighter jets to the package” as Taiwan had requested:

“The package will not include submarines or new F-16 aircraft. I urge the administration to reconsider this decision, in light of its previous commitment to provide submarines and America’s previous sales of F-16s,” McCain said. “These sales — which could translate into tens of thousands of jobs here at home — would help retain America’s edge in the production of advanced weaponry and represent a positive sign in these difficult economic times.”

McCain’s desire to increase arms sales to Taiwan, however, raises questions about yet another conflict of interest involving his chief foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann, who previously lobbied for the Taiwanese government. The Washington Post reports:

In 2005, Scheunemann signed the contract between his firm, Orion Strategies LLC, and Taiwan’s Washington office. On June 4 of this year, his partner, Mike Mitchell, signed a renewal of the contract, which calls for quarterly payments of 50,000.

Scheunemann represented Taiwan from 2003 to March at Orion. The LA Times reported that McCain has pushed for pro-Taiwan legislation, as Orion’s lobbying forms cite “bills benefiting Orion’s other foreign clients: Latvia, Macedonia, Romania and Taiwan.”

Scheunemann introduced McCain to a representative of Taiwan as it lobbied for free trade. In all, Scheunemann’s firm has lobbied McCain or his aides on at least 47 occasions since 2001 on behalf of the governments of Taiwan, Macedonia, Romania and Latvia.

Matt Duss notes that Scheunemann has lobbied for Lockheed-Martin, the world’s largest defense contractor, which manufactures the F-16s that McCain is demanding the U.S. give to Taiwan. Scheunemann had also been employed as a lobbyist for Georgia at the same time he was providing foreign policy advice to McCain, lobbying McCain himself nearly 50 times between 2004 and 2007.

The Cheney Shotgun Experiment

The Experiment

Vice President Cheney's February 11 hunting accident has raised a lot of questions. Sketchy details released after a delay are bound to raise suspicions. And given the chaos of the moment and other factors, we’re not sure even those present could give a fully accurate account. So we’re using science to try to clear things up. That means, of course, getting a 28-gauge shotgun and shooting stuff.

We wanted to find out what happens when you fire a 28-gauge shotgun at various distances – 5 yards, 10 yards, 20 yards, and 30 yards – to see what results were most consistent with the damage reported in the Cheney-Whittington accident. Our intention was to establish with some accuracy the distance at which the shotgun was fired. And also to see what happens when you blast a watermelon with a shotgun at close range.

We obtained a Remington 870 Express 28-gauge shotgun for this experiment. While this reasonably priced model is a far cry from Cheney's high-end Perazzi-Brescia over-under 28-gauge, it is a fair enough facsimile for our purposes. We used shells loaded with ¾ oz. of No. 7 ½ shot, the identical size of shot that Cheney was using.

But where's he gonna get the cash? Same way 99.99% of all home buyers get it: A loan. And who's going to be giving/guaranteeing the loan? It has to come from somewhere out of the loop, otherwise we wouldn't be in this mess.

Basically McCain wants to sell our homes to China.... How can Republicans possibly support McCain? He wants to authorize the takeover of millions of American homes to COMMUNISTS!!!!
