Swiftboating Obama - Resources For Responding To Attacks

The thematic structure of the right-wing smear campaign against Barack Obama

The most striking feature of the 2008 election may be the sheer volume and variation of the attacks being directed at Sen. Barack Obama.

Though they come from many sources, arrive through a variety of media, and cover a wide range of subjects, a close examination reveals a unified thematic structure to these attacks.

Details at links with enlarged chart (with bubbles) and information on specific attacks and claims.

A Place Called Chiapas:

On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista National Liberation Army–made up of impoverished Mayan Indians from the state of Chiapas–took over five towns and 500 ranches in southern Mexico. The government deployed its troops, and at least 145 people died in the ensuing battle. Fighting for indigenous Mexicans to regain control over their lives and the land, the Zapatistas and their charismatic leader, guerilla poet Subcomandante Marcos, began sending their message to the world via the Internet. The result was what THE NEW YORK TIMES called “the world’s first postmodern revolution.” Years into the uprising, filmmaker Nettie Wild traveled to the jungle canyons of southern Mexico to film the elusive and fragile life of the rebellion. Her camera effectively and movingly captures the personal stories behind a very public clash of traditional culture and globalization.

Behind the panic:
Financial Warfare over future of global bank power

F. William Engdahl
www.engdahl.oilgeopolitics.net/
Oct 10, 2008

Stock market falls of 7 to 10% a day make for dramatic news headlines and serve to foster a broad sense of unease bordering on panic among ordinary citizens. The events of the last two weeks among EU banks since the dramatic state rescues of Hypo Real Estate, Dexia and Fortis banks, and the announcement by UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling of a radical shift in policy in dealing with troubled UK banks, have begun to reveal the outline of a distinctly different European response to what in effect is a crisis 'Made in USA.'

There is serious ground to believe that US Goldman Sachs ex CEO Henry Paulson, as Treasury Secretary, is not stupid. There is also serious ground to believe that he is actually moving according to a well-thought-out long-term strategy. Events as they are now unfolding in the EU tend to confirm that. As one senior European banker put it to me in a private discussion, 'There is an all-out war going on between the United States and the EU to define the future face of European banking.'

In this banker's view, the ongoing attempt of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and France's Nicolas Sarkozy to get an EU common 'fund', with perhaps upwards of $300 billion to rescue troubled banks, would de facto play directly into Paulson and the US establishment's long-term strategy, by in effect weakening the banks and repaying US-originated Asset Backed Securities held by EU banks.

2007 - Lendman flashback

Besides the Bush administration's imperial aims and permanent war on the world, add the one at home below the radar. Its weapons include the WTO, NAFTA, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), FBI, CIA, NSA, NORTHCOM, militarized state and local police, National Guard forces, paramilitary mercenaries like Blackwater USA, and all other repressive instruments of state power and control. They target the people of three nations slowly becoming one headquartered in Washington. That's the apparent aim of those in power here wanting one continent, "indivisible" minus old-fashioned ideas like "liberty and justice for all" we used to believe in when, as kids, we recited our "Pledge of Allegiance." They now have a whole new meaning. They're just words drummed into young minds hoping they'll still believe them when they're old enough to know better.

There may be a greater scheme for the planet ahead, but this article only focuses on what we know about and how it's unfolding so far. It has a name, in fact, several, but they all aim for the same thing - one nation, indivisible, where three sovereign ones once stood, headquartered in Washington.

Meditations in an Emergency, by Daniel Pinchbeck

Over the last few days, I have received several warnings from people that I consider more knowledgeable than most about the potential for a severe socio-economic disruption within the next week.

The Arlington Institute, a future trends think tank, has been doing a study of precognitive dreams. Of course, dreams are imprecise yardsticks, but based on past patterns, they do seem to reveal aspects of what may take place. John Peterson, the director of TAI, believes that this data, along with other indicators he tracks, reveals the potential for a severe crisis that could unfold this weekend or early next week. Possibilities include a “terrorist” event such as an electro-magnetic pulse weapon, detonated on the East Coast of the US. Such an explosion could lead to a temporary wipeout of electronic equipment and hard drives, forcing the financial system itself to "reset." Another option may be some development connected with Iran or Russia.

Friends from within the financial world have contacted me to note that the panicked sell-off of stocks may indicate foreknowledge, on the part of some insiders, of an imminent announcement of even worse news than we have heard so far. This could be related to the banking system, or a military maneuver. One option that has been raised is that the banking system will be shut down next week. The officials may be waiting until after banks close on Friday to release this information, in order to limit panic, giving time for the information to be absorbed (Monday is a bank holiday).

Obama, Lincoln, JFK - VerDarLuz

Elections Astrology: Obama, Lincoln, JFK, Bailout Games, and Palin's Potency
VerDarLuz

I have recently received a few emails from people who are actively meditating and visualizing healing, protective light energy around Barack Obama and his family. It is my feeling that we must not only isolate our prayers and luminous meditations to Obama, but also to McCain, the other candidates, and to the bankers and all government officials at this crucial time. This national crisis is an invitation on a personal level to examine our souls. We have the power to flow unconditional love out in all directions, without prejudice or preference, but for the healing of the entire nation.

In some of my research over the last few months, I discovered powerful links in the charts of Abraham Lincoln, JFK, and Barack Obama. Interestingly, Obama wrote an article for Time magazine a few years ago about his connection with Lincoln. In this article, he stated, "And as Lincoln called once upon the better angels of our nature, I believe that he is calling still, across the ages, to summon some measure of that character, the American character, in each of us today."

Besides the similarities of their personal geographies (impoverished upbringing, Illinois), Obama's South Node, which represents our karmic traces, is on Lincoln's Sun. And the reverse is true: Obama's Sun is on Lincoln's South Node. This powerful reversal may suggest a major spiritual theme that has been circulating between these two souls, trying to be implemented in this country for some time. It very clearly could point to reincarnant energy of the same soul.

The Terrorist Barack Hussein

The Terrorist Barack Hussein Obama
By FRANK RICH
IF you think way back to the start of this marathon campaign, back when it seemed preposterous that any black man could be a serious presidential contender, then you remember the biggest fear about Barack Obama: a crazy person might take a shot at him.

Some voters told reporters that they didn’t want Obama to run, let alone win, should his very presence unleash the demons who have stalked America from Lincoln to King. After consultation with Congress, Michael Chertoff, the homeland security secretary, gave Obama a Secret Service detail earlier than any presidential candidate in our history — in May 2007, some eight months before the first Democratic primaries.

“I’ve got the best protection in the world, so stop worrying,” Obama reassured his supporters. Eventually the country got conditioned to his appearing in large arenas without incident (though I confess that the first loud burst of fireworks at the end of his convention stadium speech gave me a start). In America, nothing does succeed like success. The fear receded.

Until now. At McCain-Palin rallies, the raucous and insistent cries of “Treason!” and “Terrorist!” and “Kill him!” and “Off with his head!” as well as the uninhibited slinging of racial epithets, are actually something new in a campaign that has seen almost every conceivable twist. They are alarms. Doing nothing is not an option.

All’s fair in politics. John McCain and Sarah Palin have every right to bring up William Ayers, even if his connection to Obama is minor, even if Ayers’s Weather Underground history dates back to Obama’s childhood, even if establishment Republicans and Democrats alike have collaborated with the present-day Ayers in educational reform. But it’s not just the old Joe McCarthyesque guilt-by-association game, however spurious, that’s going on here. Don’t for an instant believe the many mindlessly “even-handed” journalists who keep saying that the McCain campaign’s use of Ayers is the moral or political equivalent of the Obama campaign’s hammering on Charles Keating.

What makes them different, and what has pumped up the Weimar-like rage at McCain-Palin rallies, is the violent escalation in rhetoric, especially (though not exclusively) by Palin. Obama “launched his political career in the living room of a domestic terrorist.” He is “palling around with terrorists” (note the plural noun). Obama is “not a man who sees America the way you and I see America.” Wielding a wildly out-of-context Obama quote, Palin slurs him as an enemy of American troops.

By the time McCain asks the crowd “Who is the real Barack Obama?” it’s no surprise that someone cries out “Terrorist!” The rhetorical conflation of Obama with terrorism is complete. It is stoked further by the repeated invocation of Obama’s middle name by surrogates introducing McCain and Palin at these rallies. This sleight of hand at once synchronizes with the poisonous Obama-is-a-Muslim e-mail blasts and shifts the brand of terrorism from Ayers’s Vietnam-era variety to the radical Islamic threats of today.

That’s a far cry from simply accusing Obama of being a guilty-by-association radical leftist. Obama is being branded as a potential killer and an accessory to past attempts at murder. “Barack Obama’s friend tried to kill my family” was how a McCain press release last week packaged the remembrance of a Weather Underground incident from 1970 — when Obama was 8.

We all know what punishment fits the crime of murder, or even potential murder, if the security of post-9/11 America is at stake. We all know how self-appointed “patriotic” martyrs always justify taking the law into their own hands.

Obama can hardly be held accountable for Ayers’s behavior 40 years ago, but at least McCain and Palin can try to take some responsibility for the behavior of their own supporters in 2008. What’s troubling here is not only the candidates’ loose inflammatory talk but also their refusal to step in promptly and strongly when someone responds to it with bloodthirsty threats in a crowded arena. Joe Biden had it exactly right when he expressed concern last week that “a leading American politician who might be vice president of the United States would not just stop midsentence and turn and condemn that.” To stay silent is to pour gas on the fires.

Oppose Privatization of Social Security ! -- Action --

Some People Get a Golden Parachute..

For Everyone Else,
There's the Golden Promise: Social Security

Americans have lost nearly $2 trillion from their retirement accounts in the last 15 months* while Wall Street's financial elites are making away with billions.

Social Security is a golden promise guaranteeing Americans that if we work hard and play by the rules, we will earn the right to retire with dignity. We must not gamble this promise away on risky privatization schemes that guarantee only massive benefits cuts and turn our life's work into a chip for Wall Street’s elites to bet.

Therefore, I pledge to oppose privatization of Social Security -- the diversion of payroll taxes into private accounts -- by any name.

Take The Pledge

I guess you believe attempts to rob you of any retirement are wildly exaggerated. Good luck with that Alice. I really hope you are right.

I think the plan is to put us all in shackles until we are dust.

What is needed?

Flashback!

Difference?

Difference

[A]fter the dismantling of the postwar system, democracy is restricted. It has therefore become necessary to control and marginalize the public in some fashion, processes particularly evident in the more business-run societies like the United States. The management of electoral extravaganzas by the public relations industry is one illustration.

"Politics is the shadow cast on society by big business," concluded America's leading 20th century social philosopher John Dewey, and will remain so as long as power resides in "business for private profit through private control of banking, land, industry, reinforced by command of the press, press agents and other means of publicity and propaganda".

The United States effectively has a one-party system, the business party, with two factions, Republicans and Democrats. There are differences between them. In his study Unequal Democracy: The Political Economy of the New Gilded Age, Larry Bartels shows that during the past six decades "real incomes of middle-class families have grown twice as fast under Democrats as they have under Republicans, while the real incomes of working-poor families have grown six times as fast under Democrats as they have under Republicans".

Differences can be detected in the current election as well. Voters should consider them, but without illusions about the political parties, and with the recognition that consistently over the centuries, progressive legislation and social welfare have been won by popular struggles, not gifts from above.

Those struggles follow a cycle of success and setback. They must be waged every day, not just once every four years, always with the goal of creating a genuinely responsive democratic society, from the voting booth to the workplace.

Morning everybody.....

Another beautiful day here in IL.

Reagan Palled Around with Terrorists, Too
Now that McCain and Palin are doing everything they can to wrap themselves in the legacy of Ronald Reagan, it’s worth noting who was “palling around with terrorists” when the Gipper was at the height of his powers after his 1984 reelection and before the Iran-Contra scandal. It was back in 1985 that McCain’s and Palin’s hero hosted Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, then a key Mujahadin leader (and major Islamo-fascist, as some might call him), at the White House. (Hekmatyar is in the foreground on the far left in the photo.)

Five killed in U.S. missile attack in Pakistan

By Haji Mujtaba

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (Reuters) - Suspected U.S. drones fired two missile on Saturday into a Pakistani region regarded as an al Qaeda and Taliban safe haven, killing at least five militants, residents and an intelligence official said.

It was the second such attack in North Waziristan tribal region on the Afghan border this week.

"The missiles were fired with a gap of a minute," a Reuters witness said from Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan. "They caused huge blasts. I saw flames rising toward the sky after the explosions."

An intelligence official said five militants were killed in the attack on a house in a shanty neighborhood known as Machis Colony. There were foreigners also among those killed and their number and nationality had not yet been ascertained, he said.

"The mud-walled house has long been used by the guests as their abode," he said, referring to the term used for the militants in the tribal areas.

Residents said the drones had been flying over Miranshah for hours and tribesmen also fired shots in the air before they struck.

The Pentagon had no comment on the report.

Six people, including three Arab fighters linked to al Qaeda, were killed in a similar attack near Miranshah on Thursday night.

Private sector loans, not Fannie or Freddie, triggered crisis
By David Goldstein and Kevin G. Hall | McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON — As the economy worsens and Election Day approaches, a conservative campaign that blames the global financial crisis on a government push to make housing more affordable to lower-class Americans has taken off on talk radio and e-mail.

Commentators say that's what triggered the stock market meltdown and the freeze on credit. They've specifically targeted the mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which the federal government seized on Sept. 6, contending that lending to poor and minority Americans caused Fannie's and Freddie's financial problems.

Federal housing data reveal that the charges aren't true, and that the private sector, not the government or government-backed companies, was behind the soaring subprime lending at the core of the crisis.

Subprime lending offered high-cost loans to the weakest borrowers during the housing boom that lasted from 2001 to 2007. Subprime lending was at its height vrom 2004 to 2006.

Federal Reserve Board data show that:

_ More than 84 percent of the subprime mortgages in 2006 were issued by private lending institutions.

_ Private firms made nearly 83 percent of the subprime loans to low- and moderate-income borrowers that year.

_ Only one of the top 25 subprime lenders in 2006 was directly subject to the housing law that's being lambasted by conservative critics.

The "turmoil in financial markets clearly was triggered by a dramatic weakening of underwriting standards for U.S. subprime mortgages, beginning in late 2004 and extending into 2007," the President's Working Group on Financial Markets reported Friday.

Conservative critics claim that the Clinton administration pushed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to make home ownership more available to riskier borrowers with little concern for their ability to pay the mortgages.

HAHAHAHA

James Baker is a COMMUNIST!

Economic problems too big for private sector and the government needs to bail him out.

He's a communist and a hypocrite I guess....

this from the I am not a crook party.

Heck of a job Baker!

He says the government shouldn't overreact to corporate scandals. He watched the September 11 attacks at the Ritz-Carlton with the Bin Laden family. He's defending the Saudi's against a trillion-dollar lawsuit brought forth by the September 11 families. He led the campaigns of the last four Republican presidents. Now he's been chosen as Bush's personal envoy in charge of restructuring Iraq's $132 billion in debt. Some say he's the most powerful lawyer in the world. He may be one of the busiest. Who is he? He's Sr. Counsel to the Carlyle Group and Secretary of the Treasury during the last Banking debacle! - Here In Reality

Wow

did Roy Blunt put on a penis suit or is that what he really looks like?

Republicans are dumping

Republicans are dumping McCcain -- and dumping on him
Joe Sudbay (DC) · 10/11/2008 10:04:00 PM ET · Link

There is so much information in this article from the top political writers at the New York Times that the whole thing is worth a read.

First and foremost, this is another in the burgeoning number of articles where leading Republicans say sure McCain can win (wink, wink) -- as they go on to trash him and his campaign. The GOPers are dumping McCain en masse.

There are a few highlights to this article. For example, leading Republicans think McCain can turn around the election in the "next 30 days." Okay, election day is in 23 days (the article is for the Sunday paper) -- and people in many states are already voting. I had to read this paragraph a couple times to make sure it said "30 days," and it does:

Again and again, party leaders said in interviews that while they still believed that Mr. McCain could win over voters in the next 30 days, they were concerned that he and his advisers seemed to be adrift in dealing with an extraordinarily challenging political battleground and a crisis on Wall Street.

Here's one top GOPer making that "30 days" claim:
“The main thing he needs to do,” said Vin Weber, a former Republican congressman from Minnesota, “is focus on a single message — a single, concise or clear-cut message, and stick with that over the next 30 days, regardless of what happens. He’s had a lot of attack lines. But it’s time to choose.”

So, leading Republicans think McCain might win the election in 30 days or on November 11th. Okay, but by then Obama will be the president-elect.

Another classic passage comes from the Pennsylvania GOP Chair:

In Pennsylvania, Robert A. Gleason Jr., the state Republican chairman, said he was concerned that Mr. McCain’s increasingly aggressive tone was not working with moderate voters and women in the important southeastern part of a state that is at the top of Mr. McCain’s must-win list.

“They’re not as susceptible to attack ads,” Mr. Gleason said. “I worry about the southeast. Obama is making inroads.”

Funny that Mr. Gleason is so worried about the "aggressive tone." Last week, as Will Bunch reported, that same Mr. Gleason sent out a press release calling Obama "a terrorist's best friend." Gleason is clearly an idiot. He's got only himself (and McCain and Palin) to blame for the ugliness that's turning off voters in his state.

I'll conclude with a comment from former Bush cabinet secretary Tommy Thompson who was pretty blunt:
Tommy Thompson, a Republican who is a former governor of Wisconsin, said it would be difficult for Mr. McCain to win in his state but not impossible, particularly if he campaigned in conservative Democratic parts of the state. Asked if he was happy with Mr. McCain’s campaign, Mr. Thompson replied, “No,” and he added, “I don’t know who is.”
Yes, the GOP rats are jumping off the McCain ship. Those same rats were all on the Bush ship that destroyed America.

This election is going to be a total repudiation of the Republican party.

Precognition dreams (Pinchbeck above)

My opinion: People who are having "precognitive" disaster dreams are really just dreaming about the present.

maggiesboy

that rant on the last hr about Malloy was great. I'm glad you said that.

AREN'T PIT BULLS...

breed to be the STUPIDEST breed of dog ever???

The Secret Service needs to shut this reckless bitch down now!!!

Who calls American Presidents "terrorists"? Al-Qaeda? Secessionists?

Who does she think she is??? Michelle Vick? She's a sorry excuse for a human.

She's gonna make William Ayers look like Mr. Rogers...

And please... can we know more about who this JOE VOGLER guy is????....... I heard she addressed his followers at a convention this year....

Is Palin only trying to call out Obama to hide her own ties to extremism?

Again. The Secret Service needs to shut Sarah Palin down now!!!

Free speech is only free when it doesn't incite violence.

Thanks Fernando..

I'm going to have the Oct 10, 2008 Mike Malloy Show bronzed!

Thanks for bringing it to my attention as I prolly would have missed that one.

Roy Blunt and the Penis Suit..

Nah, he didn't have to put on a suit, he was born a dickhead. ;-)

</bluerootsradio>

Like I said on an earlier post

Palin has her own agenda. McCain can't even control her let alone his "base". Which isn't even HIS base. Many are backing him because of Palin now. All the crazies, the evangelical crazies he couldn't get before Palin.

The republican base is now breaking apart. The true conservatives are seeing this problem and breaking away from what they see as a dangerous situation.

The evangelicals have been trying to take over the repubs for years. This may cause a real skism. Time will tell.

Palin is playing McCain for a chump

Each has the same goal

Screw their running-mate

Either way the poor/working/middleclass gets fucked.

Two shout outs within hours!

Wow!

And a big shout out to all of the diligent bloggers who add links and sourcing to their posts so we can all see complete articles and contexts and spread the information.

I assume any post not so credited is probably manipulated and dishonestly clipped information.

Or maybe just lazy and inconsiderate.

There is a new thread, btw.
