excellent
In addition to a general shift in the zietgiest to a "less is more" sensibility- with the oncoming economic disaster, I'm hoping to see a lot more of this :
An environmental activist tainted an auction of oil and gas drilling
leases Friday by bidding up parcels of land by hundreds of thousands of
dollars without any intention of paying for them, a federal official
said.

frist
happy holidays everyone.
i read about this. nice trick. perhaps the biggest tell-tale that this whole process is bullshit is that the activitist got figured out because the "regulars" said, he's not one of us. i guess that's a pretty exclusive club where the gubermint gives bush's cronys gas leases on the cheap.
FELIZ NAVIDAD!!!

On my way to get the tamales $8.50/doz
Tim DeChristopher was on DN the other day, Sam
When he realized no one else was going to stick their neck out and risk trouble to protect the environment he decided it would be him and he isn't afraid of going to jail for it...
...
AMY GOODMAN: And then there’s the land you actually bought. Now, that land—
TIM DeCHRISTOPHER: Right.
AMY GOODMAN: —can’t go up again until something like February, is that right? Which means a new administration, an administration who—we know at least the head of the transition team, John Podesta, has expressed concern about the sale of this land. The land whose price you upped just by bidding, though you didn’t win, that could be sold within this ten-day period?
TIM DeCHRISTOPHER: My impression of that is that those oil companies can give that back if they feel like they purchased it in any kind of way that’s not acceptable to them, because I happened to drive the cost of their oil up a little closer to what the actual cost of producing oil is and the actual external costs that all the rest of us are going to have to pay.
AMY GOODMAN: What are the charges you’re facing right now? And are you willing to go to jail?
TIM DeCHRISTOPHER: The charges haven’t been released yet, so I don’t know what charges I’m facing. There’s a good chance that they are going to be significant charges. And, you know, obviously, I’m going to fight those. And, of course, I don’t want to go to jail. And I’m willing to, if it comes to that, but, you know, I’m not looking to be a martyr or anything like that.
I’ve seen the need for more serious action by the environmental movement and to protect a livable future for all of us. I’ve seen that need for a long time. And frankly, I’ve been hoping that someone would step up and someone would come out and be the leader and someone would put themselves on the line and make the sacrifices necessary to get us on a path to a more livable future. And I guess I just couldn’t wait any longer for that someone to come out there and had to accept the fact that that someone might be me.

IMF's top economist warns of another Great Depression, urges government spending to replace consumer demand if necessary

AFP
The IMF's top economist, Olivier Blanchard, maintained that governments around the world should boost domestic demand in order to avoid another Great Depression similar to the global downturn that shook the world in the 1930s.
"Consumer and business confidence indexes have never fallen so far since they began. The coming months will be very bad," Blanchard said in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde.
"It is imperative to stifle this loss of confidence, to restart household consumption, if we want to prevent this recession developing into a Great Depression," he added.
Actually, I found the article in Le Monde, and I think the economist was even more vehement than the AFP translation. I'm also not convinced that AFP totally explained what the economist was suggesting - he wasn't just saying that we need to restart consumer demand, he was saying that governments have to consider boosting their own spending to REPLACE consumer demand, if necessary, even if it leads to larger deficits. Here is what Le Monde says:
What the economist appears to be saying is that governments need to consider REPLACING the loss of consumer spending with GOVERNMENT spending, if necessary, regardless of whether it leads to deficits.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the IMF, is pushing governments to increase their own spending in order to support growth. The IMF has always been a big enemy of deficits. Why the reversal?
We are facing a crisis of an exceptional breadth, the basis of which is a collapse of demand. The consumer and business confidence numbers have never fallen this much since they've first been recorded. We've NEVER seen this!...
It is imperative to curb the this loss of confidence, to relaunch it and, if necessary, replace private demand, if we want to avoid a recession that turns into a Great Depression. Of course, in normal times, we would recommend that Europe reduce its budget deficits. But these are not normal times.

It's easy for the majority of people to stop buying anything but the necessities because they already have too much. And the poor have been living without so they are used to it, not happy about it, but used to it. The rich are having a hard time with this because they see no profits other than what they can grab before the hammer comes down.
I was at Borders

Hi nightbird.. !

Awww.....
When Dr. Carol Chomsky accompanies her husband on lecture tours, she often finds herself surrounded by “very young and breathless” women, who inevitably ask her the same question: “So what’s it like to be married to Noam Chomsky?’” Her response, which took her some time to work out: “I’ll tell you one thing—it’s never boring!”
A mixed compliment, perhaps, but no small achievement, given that she’s known him since they were children and has been married to him for more than half a century.
Back in the old country—Philadelphia—she was known as Carol Schatz. Her family and Noam’s belonged to the same synagogue.
...
It’s hardly surprising that it took some time before she became romantically interested in a boy she had known since she was five.

yumm - Alice!
Artichoke Jalepeno dip sounds good.
looks easy to make too:
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
4 pickled jalapeño peppers, seeded and finely chopped
1 (6-ounce) jar marinated artichoke hearts, drain, reserve marinade
2 teaspoons Tabasco green jalapeño sauce
Kosher or coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1. Use a food processor with metal blade to finely grate Parmesan cheese. Add the cream cheese, mixing well. Transfer cheese mixture to a mixing bowl
.
2. Chop jalapeño peppers in processor, add drained artichoke hearts and process just until coarsely chopped. Add artichoke/jalapeño mixture and the jalapeño sauce to cheese mixture. Mix well. If needed, add small amount of additional marinade to obtain desired consistency. Salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Thai economy to slow sharply in 2009, finance ministry says
Bangkok - A senior Thai finance ministry official Wednesday predicted the economy will grow by only 1 per cent next year.
Somchai Sajjapon, director-general of fiscal policy, said falling exports, declining service industries and weaker domestic spending will cause a sharp slowdown in business activity. - m&c Business

So who are we to believe: the experts who failed to predict the current crisis or the great American public? With due respect to my fellow dabblers in the dismal science, I share Joe the Plumber’s queasy feeling. Unless something miraculous happens in the next few weeks, the new inhabitant of the Oval Office will inherit an economy flailing under the weight of record debts and rising unemployment. If a depression is defined as a deep, extended recession of a severity that nobody under the age of 75 can recall, then it is quite likely that we are already in one.
(snip)
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the September financial earthquake was how rapidly it spread to places far from the epicenter, such as Iceland and Ireland, and how much damage it did there. Even now, the aftershocks are being felt in countries like Brazil, Hungary, and South Korea. Not since the collapse of the Viennese bank Creditanstalt in the spring of 1931, which unleashed a wave of instability that culminated in the decline of the gold standard, has the international monetary system seemed so fragile.
(snip)
Until the U.S. follows the example of the Swiss government, which recently took all of UBS’s toxic assets and shifted them into a separate “bad bank,” most big American banks will continue to hoard capital rather than lend, which means credit will remain hard to come by.

WSJ
Get Ready for a Lost Decade
It's already happening to our banking bailout. If injecting government capital to improve confidence in banks was a good idea, it did nothing to improve the banks' own confidence in their borrowers. Yet now that banks have government capital, they're being pressed to lend to politically favored constituents regardless of their own judgment about whether the borrower is good for the money.
Or take the gathering auto bailout: Taxpayer dollars are being thrown at Detroit auto makers to make them "viable," even as Congress imposes new fuel-mileage mandates requiring them to incur tens of billions in costs unlikely to be recouped from their customers -- the definition of "nonviable."
Mr. Obama's troops palpitate with excitement at the prospect of $1 trillion in "stimulus,"...Billions will be diverted from useful purposes to create "green jobs" that deliver no meaningful impact on climate or the accumulation of atmospheric carbon.

Mumia Abu Jamal Update
On Friday, December 19, 2008 Mumia filed his appeal to the United States Supreme Court asking it to consider his case for a new GUILT PHASE trial. That would mean a new trial that could lead to Mumia's release, rather than simply a SENTENCE trial that could only lead to life in prison or execution.
Last month, the Philadelphia District Attorney filed its appeal to have Mumia executed without even a new sentencing phase trial where he might be sentenced to life in prison.

Update on the Greek Uprising
Update on the Greek Uprising
An interview...
December 24, 2008 By Nikos Raptis
and Chris Spannos
Simmering social and material tensions in Greece were detonated by the police killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Gregoropoulos earlier this month on December 6th. The past three weeks have seen daily and nightly tumultuous clashes between those rising up and the Greek state. Demonstrations, protests, barricades, and riots have rocked the streets. TV stations, universities, high schools, workplaces, and city halls---overall hundreds of institutions---have been occupied.
Last Saturday was an international day of solidarity with the Greek uprising. Labor and student demonstrations are scheduled to continue early in the new-year.
Nikos Raptis is a resident of Athens and also a long-time contributor to Z, which happens to be named for the Costa-Gavras film, also titled Z, that is about resistance and repression in post-war Greece. Raptis's article, "Greek Teenagers," provides background to the uprising. Z collective member Chris Spannos interviewed Nikos for an update on the current status of the revolt. The interview took place between December 17-23.
The Greek Populace
Chris: First, moving into the third week of rebellion, can you give an overview of events this week and into the foreseeable future? What is the mood of those protesting and of broader society more generally?
Nikos: Chris, allow me, before we go ahead with the interview, to make a few comments on the mood that I [or any other person] find myself in these days. For example, in the morning of December 18 I read in the news:
First: In the New York Times of December 17 we read: "Jose and his brother Romel [two Ecuadorian immigrants] appear to have been misidentified as gay as they walked home, arms around each other, on a predawn morning in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Romel managed to escape the three men who emerged from a passing car wielding a baseball bat and shouting anti-gay and anti-Latino epithets.
Jose was struck on the head with a bottle, then kicked and beaten into unconsciousness... and expired last Friday night, one day before his mother, who was traveling from Ecuador, could reach him".
Second: In today's Greek press we read: Alexis Gregoropoulos, the 15-year-old Greek, was murdered by a Greek policeman on December 6. Yesterday, 12 days after the murder of Alexis, around 11 am, a group of about 10 high school kids, members of the Coordinating Committee of their school, were assembled at an open public space at Peristeri [a rather downgraded part of Athens] discussing the program for the demonstrations of the next day. A shot was fired from some distance and a 17-year-old kid was hit on the palm of his right hand. The kid was operated upon this morning and a 38-caliber revolver bullet was extracted. According to the other kids a second shot was fired 10 minutes later from a closer distance.

Bush withdraws 1 of 19 pardons he issued Tuesday
By JENNIFER LOVEN, AP
WASHINGTON – President George W. Bush on Wednesday revoked a pardon he had granted only a day before — a step unheard of in recent memory — after learning in news reports of political contributions to Republicans by the man's father and other information.
Bush pardoned 19 people on Tuesday, including Isaac Robert Toussie of Brooklyn, N.Y., who had been convicted of making false statements to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and of mail fraud. On Wednesday, the White House issued an extraordinary statement saying the president was reversing his decision in Toussie's case.
White House press secretary Dana Perino said the new decision was "based on information that has subsequently come to light," including on the extent and nature of Toussie's prior criminal offenses. She also said that neither the White House counsel's office nor the president had been aware of a political contribution by Toussie's father that "might create an appearance of impropriety."

Thrills, chills and exploding psyches. The antidote to mainstream Christmas twaddle. Remember, shoot 'em in the head.

Christmas At Rock-Away Rest
'Twas the night before Christmas at Rock-Away Rest,
and all of us seniors were looking our best.
Our glasses, how sparkly, our wrinkles, how merry;
Our punchbowl held prune juice plus three drops of sherry.
A bedsock was taped to each walker, in hope That Santa would bring us soft candy and soap.
We surely were lucky to be there with friends,
Secure in this residence and in our Depends.
Our grandkids had sent us some Christmasy crafts,
Like angels in snowsuits and penguins on rafts.
The dental assistant had borrowed our teeth,
And from them she'd crafted a holiday wreath.
The bed pans, so shiny, all stood in a row,
Reflecting our candle's magnificent glow.
Our supper so festive -- the joy wouldn't stop
-- Was creamy warm oatmeal with sprinkles on top.
Our salad was Jell-O, so jiggly and great,
Then puree of fruitcake was spooned on each plate.
The social director then had us play games,
Like "Where Are You Living?" and "What Are Your Names?"
Old Grandfather Looper was feeling his oats,
Proclaiming that reindeer were nothing but goats.
Our resident wand'rer was tied to her chair,
In hopes that at bedtime she still would be there.
Security lights on the new fallen snow
Made outdoors seem noon to the old folks below.
Then out on the porch there arose quite a clatter
(But we are so deaf that it just didn't matter).
A strange little fellow flew in through the door,
Then tripped on the sill and fell flat on the floor.
'Twas just our director, all togged out in red.
He jiggled and chuckled and patted each head.
We knew from the way that he strutted and jived
Our social- security checks had arrived.
We sang -- how we sang -- in our monotone croak,
Till the clock tinkled out its soft eight-p.m. stroke.
And soon we were snuggling deep in our beds.
While nurses distributed nocturnal meds.
And so ends our Christmas at Rock-Away Rest.
'fore long you'll be with us,
We wish you the best!

"Mr. Turkey Was A Linebacker In The NFL
Submitted by Crank Bait on Mon, 12/24/2007 - 9:57pm.
Tomorrow, if I decide to substitute a turkey dinner for the rum dinner which requires far less preparation, I will cook the largest bird of my kitchen career.
Usually I go with a twelve-ish pound turkey for no particular reason. This time around I made a snap in-store decision based on unreasoned logic, "Would the bones be proportionately larger in a humongous fowl? Probably not."
Some background is in order. Ever since I discovered that bachelorhood requires far less effort than the alternative, I have deboned the hot bird (note thinly-veiled allegory) and packaged and frozen the excess for future enjoyment. Every time that I have done this, I have eaten the meat in the fridge like a starving refugee, then dragged-out the packages of meat from the freezer, one after the other, until I have eaten everything in less than a week. Turkey, ready-to-eat, is my Siren Song.
This time I decided to go for broke. I have a turkey thawing in my frige that is big enough to frighten a German Shepherd. During the week that it has been thawing, my refrigerator hasn't cycled even once. It's as if Lake Huron were shedding its winter ice in there.
A few days ago I measured the monster (a mechanical mind is an enfant terrible thing to waste). It exceeds any container on hand except for the 55 gallon drum I burn my trash in. Briefly I considered the option of killing two birds with one stone, but decided to find a roasting pan that could double as a hot tub instead.
At this point I was into Christmas dinner and its leftovers to the tune of big bucks not counting the kilowatts but, hey, be of good cheer, right? Who cares if I purchased a turkey so heavy that the drumsticks will chew like Lance Armstrong's calves?
I have a roasting bag big enough to please a coroner. I have a pan I could bathe in. I measured the oven (Phew! It was close). I have a machete and a chainsaw. I probably have a turkey neck that would make a stallion proud.
What I need now is a cook who knows what the fuck she is doing."

more from MN
n what may very well be the death knell for Norm Coleman's time in the U.S. Senate, the Minnesota Supreme Court on Wednesday unanimously dismissed one of his last legal objections to the recount process.
In a five-to-zero decision, the court rejected a Coleman campaign lawsuit that sought to block the course of the recount due to concerns that some ballots had been counted twice. It was the Minnesota Republican's last legal angle for making up the 47-vote deficit he currently faces against Al Franken.
Coleman had argued that in the process of recounting, some precincts had accidentally counted both the original ballots and duplicates that were used for those original ballots that couldn't be properly scanned. But the campaign asked only for the state to look at 25 specific counties, suggesting that the argument was politically and not legally motivated. Moreover, it couldn't provide evidence that voting tallies during the recount exceeded those on Election Day -- which would have been the obvious result of duplicates being counted.
With this issue, seemingly, out of the way, the recount process will come to an end once the state and both campaigns decide what to do about improperly rejected absentee ballots. That should come in early January. And while it would be foolish to predict how the counting and disbursement of these 1,600 ballots would proceed -- the two camps have agreed on principles by which the process will be conducted -- it seems likely that the results will favor Franken.
Franken's campaign has been pining to have these wrongfully rejected absentee ballots counted from the beginning of the recount process, suggesting that they believe the votes will favor Franken. It is more common for Democratic voters to make clerical errors on their absentee ballots than it is for Republicans.
All told, the window through which Coleman was looking to hold unto his Senate seat just became measurably narrower.
UPDATE: Not entirely surprising, the Coleman campaign says a lawsuit challenging the results of the election is now a near certainty. According to the Hill:
The Coleman campaign had claimed [duplicate] ballots, created by local election officials to mirror original ballots that were somehow damaged, were sometimes counted twice by accident, and should not be included.
"We are deeply disappointed in that result. The Supreme Court decision virtually guarantees this election will be decided with an election contest," Fritz Knaak told reporters on a conference call on Christmas Eve. "There's no question, I mean no question in our minds that [a lawsuit] will happen now."
Should the Coleman campaign file a contest, which it must do within seven days of the end of ballots being counted, the election results cannot be certified and no one will be sworn in when the 111th Congress meets January 5

The gifted storyteller and former radio broadcaster John Henry Faulk recorded his Christmas story in 1974 for the program Voices in the Wind.
There are links to listen and and download.
Looking forward to this one, zeek...
He was blacklisted in 1957, but with support from Edward R. Murrow, won a libel suit against the corporation that branded him a Communist. Faulk's book, Fear on Trial, published in 1963, chronicles this experience.

"To experience the true Italy, one must be a little daring! Eschew the Baedeker, dismiss the Cicerone, and venture out alone..."
— Miss Lavish in A Room With A View
Lucy Honeychurch and her nervous chaperone embark on a grand tour of Italy. Alongside sweeping landscapes, Lucy encounters a suspect group of characters — socialist Mr. Emerson and his working-class son George, in particular — who both surprise and intrigue her. When piqued interest turns to potential romance, Lucy is whisked home to England, where her attention turns to Cecil Vyse. But now, with a well-developed appetite for adventure, will Lucy make the daring choice when it comes to love? Andrew Davies offers a new adaptation of the E.M. Forster classic.

PEACE ON EARTH
Peace on Earth is a one-reel 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon short directed by Hugh Harman, about a post-apocalyptic world populated only by animals.
Two young squirrels ask their grandfather on Christmas Eve who the "men" are in the lyric "Peace on Earth, good will to men." The grandfather squirrel then tells them a rotoscoped history of the human race, focusing on the neverending wars men waged. Ultimately the wars do end, with the death of the last man on Earth, a soldier. The cartoon features an original song written to the tune of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" - Wiki
that is an amazing cartoon Nando
I cannot remember where I first saw it, probably pbs.

Wife says Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter dies at 78
Dec. 25, 2008, 9:32 AM EST
LONDON (AP) -- Harold Pinter, praised as the most influential British playwright of his generation and a longtime voice of political protest, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 78.
Pinter, whose distinctive contribution to the stage was recognized with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005, died on Wednesday, according to his second wife, Lady Antonia Fraser.
Harold Pinter in 2005 (©AP)
"Pinter restored theater to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of each other and pretense crumbles," the Nobel Academy said when it announced Pinter's award. "With a minimum of plot, drama emerges from the power struggle and hide-and-seek of interlocution."
The Nobel Prize gave Pinter a global platform which he seized enthusiastically to denounce U.S. President George W. Bush and then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
"The invasion of Iraq was a bandit act, an act of blatant state terrorism, demonstrating absolute contempt for the concept of international law," Pinter said in his Nobel lecture, which he recorded rather than traveling to Stockholm.
"How many people do you have to kill before you qualify to be described as a mass murderer and a war criminal? One hundred thousand?" he asked, in a hoarse voice.
Weakened by cancer and bandaged from a fall on a slippery pavement, Pinter seemed a vulnerable old man when he emerged from his London home to speak about the Nobel Award.

a very happy christmas
have been caught in a whirlwindy frenzy and out of the loop for the last week or so, missed you guys and thought about you, just not enough time to actively participate in the festive chats around here
here is the only contribution that i can come up with to the christmasy atmosphere on the quick, i apologize for the low quality of the video but it was really dark, though there were a lot of cheery lights, (I have a very lousy low-def camera) my two grandaughters walking through a path in the park in this New Orleans thing called "Christmas in the oaks" a festival of lights and music and disneysh type staff for kids and grownups alike, it was a lot of fun, but being nighttime this is the best i could do with my cheapy camera

hi all, i haven't been out of the loop totally been sporadically

it's warm fernando
we only had one cold day in the last 15-day stretch, that was on monday, around 35, then it climbed back up; its in the 75-80 range right now; we picked a good time to do the christmas in the oak thing, perfect weather, we had to use the air conditioning that day
didn't wanna mention the weather because of toni :)

On CNN they are covering the supposed life of Jesus and how he died.
The scholar says that the Romans inflicted terror and torture on the
population through whipping and crowns of thorns and crucifixions to
those people who dissented to the power of the state.

Former British Foreign Secretary: Al Qaeda is Not a Real Group, Just a U.S. Propaganda Campaign
Global Research, December 24, 2008
georgewashington2.blogspot.com
Former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook says:
The truth is, there is no Islamic army or terrorist group called Al Qaida. And any informed intelligence officer knows this. But there is a propaganda campaign to make the public believe in the presence of an identified entity representing the 'devil' only in order to drive the TV watcher to accept a unified international leadership for a war against terrorism. The country behind this propaganda is the US. Cook has previously written:
Al-Qaida, literally "the database", was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians. Cook is merely confirming what others have said. Former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski told the Senate that the war on terror is "a mythical historical narrative".

Eartha Kitt, Singer And Dancer, Dies At 81
NEW YORK — Eartha Kitt, a sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died, a family spokesman said. She was 81.
Andrew Freedman said Kitt, who was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, died Thursday in Connecticut of colon cancer.
Kitt, a self-proclaimed "sex kitten" famous for her catlike purr, was one of America's most versatile performers, winning two Emmys and nabbing a third nomination. She also was nominated for several Tonys and two Grammys.

Her career spanned six decades, from her start as a dancer with the famed Katherine Dunham troupe to cabarets and acting and singing on stage, in movies and on television. She persevered through an unhappy childhood as a mixed-race daughter of the South and made headlines in the 1960s for denouncing the Vietnam War during a visit to the White House.
Through the years, Kitt remained a picture of vitality and attracted fans less than half her age even as she neared 80.
When her book "Rejuvenate," a guide to staying physically fit, was published in 2001, Kitt was featured on the cover in a long, curve-hugging black dress with a figure that some 20-year-old women would envy. Kitt also wrote three autobiographies.
Once dubbed the "most exciting woman in the world" by Orson Welles, she spent much of her life single, though brief romances with the rich and famous peppered her younger years.
After becoming a hit singing "Monotonous" in the Broadway revue "New Faces of 1952," Kitt appeared in "Mrs. Patterson" in 1954-55. (Some references say she earned a Tony nomination for "Mrs. Patterson," but only winners were publicly announced at that time.) She also made appearances in "Shinbone Alley" and "The Owl and the Pussycat."

We had snow in SW Louisiana this month
On December 11 we had 1 to 6 inches in the Acadiana area (metro Lafayette). My town only had about an inch but a few miles north had four inches and about 15 miles north had six inches, which is incredible for this place. The snow was all gone by lunch that day, and it was 70 degrees the next day. I know you folks up north are already sick of snow by now, but for the gulf coast it's a special once a decade treat.
