All trees and hedgerows should equal 'carbon credits'!
Why is it that each homeowner can't get 'carbon credits' for each tree on his/her property?
In my neighborhood there are folks who cut down perfectly healthy trees; then in the summer not only do I see those neighbors putting in giant air conditioners, but the WHOLE neighborhood suffers from less shade, less windbreak, resulting in dehydration of remaining plants and the soil, and less wildlife habitat. Would these neighbors be so unthinking about removing trees if each tree was acknowledged for its value in an energy credit system for homeowners.
Carbon credits for homeowners who nurture trees, please!
And go further:
Planting a natural interconnected web of green corridors all over America, a green habitat and fresh air generator that takes hedgerows to the nth power, complete with road bypasses -- this is how we can clean our air, reforest America and preserve wildlife habitats at the same time. And planting this would be a fantastic work program for youth who need to learn skills. And any property owner who participates in putting their land in this web should get carbon credits and/or other benefits too!

The value of Living, Breathing Trees!
New York City's 600,000 street trees are worth $122 million in environmental benefits.
Healthier Air.
Cleaner Water.
Lower Energy Costs.
Higher Property Values.

Pure Beauty.
A new science-based software called i-Tree, along with satellites, Internet and mathematics are being used by Ohio State University Extension to calculate and quantify the benefits of the green canopy of trees and emphasize the importance of trees in 'green' city planning.
The environmental benefits of just 673 maple trees at one test site was calculated $90,000 a year!

Israeli attack could impact
Israeli attack could impact Obama
I have a story up now looking at how the Israeli attack in Gaza may influence Obama's approach to the region:
Israel’s air strikes in Gaza end any faint hopes that President-elect Barack Obama will take office with a clear path toward Middle East peace laid out before him.
It may also strengthen the hand of more hawkish advisers who have argued that his first step toward Middle East peace should be attempting to weaken and isolate Iran, not negotiating with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, analysts said. With Israeli elections scheduled for February 10, the ongoing Gaza strike and its eventual aftermath may determine who Obama will choose as his Israeli interlocutor.
…
Within Obama’s transition, Democrats say there’s a subtle division between between advisers who hold out hope for a directly negotiated peace, culminating with a signing ceremony on the South Lawn, and those who have argued for a more oblique approach aimed at a negotiated peace between Israel and Syria, and weakening Syria’s ties with Iran. The latter group of advisers — which include former Clinton aides Dennis Ross and Martin Indyk — see weakening the role of Iran, which is closely tied to Hezbollah, as central to establishing an Israeli-Palestinian peace.
The hostilities between Israel and Hamas in Gaza may strengthen their case, analysts on both sides of the divide said Sunday. But the success of the attack may have the reverse consequence in Israeli politics, strengthening foreign minister and Kadima Party leader Tzipi Livni, who is seen as being somewhat more open to negotiations with Palestinian leaders than her main rival, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Why does the US tolerate female mutilation in Iraq?

Considering how obsessed the Bush administration has been for the failed abstinence programs that sucked up millions of taxpayer dollars, why have they tolerated mutilation? This is a brutal procedure that has no place in any government that the US is supporting. Spend money to educate and end this practice or tie it to foreign assistance received, but it has to eradicated. That it operates so openly in Iraq is disgraceful.
"This is the practice of the Kurdish people for as long as anyone can remember," said the mother, Aisha Hameed, 30, a housewife in this ethnically mixed town about 100 miles north of Baghdad. "We don't know why we do it, but we will never stop because Islam and our elders require it."
Kurdistan is the only known part of Iraq --and one of the few places in the world--where female circumcision is widespread. More than 60 percent of women in Kurdish areas of northern Iraq have been circumcised, according to a study conducted this year. In at least one Kurdish territory, 95 percent of women have undergone the practice, which human rights groups call female genital mutilation.
The practice, and the Kurdish parliament's refusal to outlaw it, highlight the plight of women in a region with a reputation for having a more progressive society than the rest of Iraq. Advocates for women point to the increasing frequency of honor killings against women and female self-immolations in Kurdistan this year as further evidence that women in the area still face significant obstacles, despite efforts to raise public awareness of circumcision and violence against women.

GOP Senate Leader Mitch
GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell obstructs Obama's stimulus package

Note from John: This is Mitch McConnel's Hurricane Katrina moment. The economic disaster has already been forecast, the storm has begun, and McConnell, like his mentor George Bush, is out to lunch, acting like it's just another day. We're going to name this next Depression after the Republicans who dawdled while our economy fell off the cliff. Politics is more important to the Republicans than our very survival.
-----
The GOP Senators, led by Mitch McConnell, have enabled the Bush administration's domestic and international disasters for the past eight years. McConnell is trying to further destroy the already fragile U.S. economy by continuing the same obstructionist games:
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) voiced skepticism today about the emerging economic stimulus plan, applying a brake to Democratic plans to quickly pass up to $850 billion in spending and tax cuts soon after President-elect Barack Obama's Jan. 20 inauguration.
"As of right now, Americans are left with more questions than answers about this unprecedented government spending, and I believe the taxpayers deserve to know a lot more about where it will be spent before we consider passing it," McConnell said in a statement, which will be publicly issued later today.
Obama's advisers and congressional Democrats have been huddling in the Capitol trying to craft a massive stimulus plan that could cost anywhere from $675 billion to $850 billion, while some economists are pushing for a total package worth more than $1 trillion.
McConnell -- the most powerful Republican in Washington, based on the filibuster-proof level of 41 GOP Senate seats -- called for many congressional hearings on the stimulus plan and some undetermined safeguards to assure the money is being spent wisely.
The Senate Republicans have been the most destructive political force in the country. They're not changing the way they do business. And, for some reason, despite the loss of 25% of the GOP Senate caucus over the past two years, McConnell thinks the same strategy will work now.
Seems that Mitch McConnell didn't get the memo about the new post-partisan era in which we're living. The symbolism of homophobe Rick Warren delivering the invocation at the inauguration was supposed to show McConnell that D.C. is a different place now and we all have to get along. Apparently not. (But, surely Warren will call McConnell and the other Republican Senators to get them on board with Obama's agenda, right?)
Post-partisanship only works when both sides do it and we're seeing that isn't going to happen.

Science: 'We do it for humanity'. Say what?
By now the Human Race should have figured out there is a DIFFERENCE between SICK, INSANE CURIOSITY and a workable ideal of furthering knowledge of the material world via the scientific method.
The Jan. 2009 SMITHSONIAN Magazine has a "nature" news note about "Scientists from Carnegie Mellon and Cornell" who ripped the the hindwings off butterflies for the sake of seeing if the delicate creatures could still fly.
Excuse me, but isn't pulling the wings off flies one of the hallmark cliches describing someone with a SICK MIND?!
Yet, SMITHSONIAN prints this as a newsworthy tidbit, as if it is the most normal thing in the world to dismember our fellow creatures in the noble pursuit of science.
SMITHSONIAN's defense probably would be, 'It's Science and the Intellectual Freedom of Scientists is for Humanity' since that is the usual reply, the usual twisted rationale. The longtime myth and public relations scam that Science exists in a Privileged Amoral Realm which means that all that Science does, no matter how heinous, must be excused and reported free from any taint of judgement, conscience, morality or ethics. (This Privileged Amoral Realm is the same place you can find George W. Bush, Alberto Gonzales, John Yoo, and Cheney and Company, as they go about their Policymaking of Torture and No-Bid Contract Profiteering Theft. Note how cozily Theft dwells with Torture in the Privileged Amoral Realm, and it is the same when it comes to Bad Science: Someone with a truly needed and sane science proposal was turned away so that funds could be spent tearing the wings off butterflies!)
And when Bad Scientists claim they are doing their heinous experiments 'for the sake of humanity', well, isn't that spoken just like soulless folks who haven't an inkling what the real value of humanity's humanity is?

What a scam.
This is another giveaway to Bush's corporate friends.
1. Even if you only wanted one, they sent you TWO coupons -- meaning the government was subsidizing two, even if the corporations only delivered one to a consumer!
2. Many coupons expired before the converter boxes were on store shelves.
3. Plus, no matter how many folks, units, apartments, households exist at any street address, that street address only was allowed two discount offers. So, this means, as indicated in 1. & 2., the manufacturers were paid for boxes they never sold at a discount AND ALSO, no offers were being made to people living in mutliple unit properties -- that is, a great many tax-paying Americans who could use a discount.
It appears the program was not created to help out American taxpayers, but rather to provide SEED MONEY UP-FRONT for the corporate manufacturers of the digital technology. Now that they are on their feet, the corporations will charge whatever they want of the public who funded their front-end costs. Disgusting.
Yet another taxpayer rip-off. We have the Corporatists (Rep and Dem corporatists alike) to thank for this nightmare.

But there still hope for Ayla, she's so young she can be forgiven her naivete, and what the heck at least she got a good song out of it.

Tin Foil Mecca
Despite the success, 2008 was an annus horribilis for the company. While Suzlon should have been reaping the benefits of a world hungry for clean energy, it has been hit by a triple whammy: the credit crunch sent its stock plummeting; cracks appeared in its rotor blades used by US customers, raising doubts over its technology, and the $1.6bn acquisition of Germany's Repower, a turbine maker that produces giant offshore rigs, stalled.
The turbulence has hit the company hard. Suzlon's stock price has crashed 90% since January to end up trading at just 56 rupees (80p) in December - valuing the Tanti family's 66% stake at £830m. - G online

Gaza - Where the Bible says David met Goliath...
Who's 'David' now?
Big brute bully Israel is plummetting a million Palestinians packed into a small space (no larger than Washington D.C.) with the highest tech weapons imagineable in retribution for the acts of a few.
Is this how Bush plans to stay in office and enact martial law, by letting Israel cause a Mideast flare-up in response to a handful of attacks triggered by Israel's genocidal siege against Gaza (cutting off Gaza's life-sustaining supplies including hospital necessities, etc.)? When 80 percent of Palestinian children are malnourished, how can this be called anything but Genocide?
Is Israel merely following Usurper Bush's lead since Bush refused to recognize the democraticly-elected Hamas government and Bush cut all aid to Palestine?
When Israel wages Destabilization to the point of Genocide in Palestine, are the Israelis just imitating Big Brother Bush's policy in Iraq?

Transnational Corporations killing another segment of economy
The Evil Transnational Corporations killed the American Economy segment made up of individual farmers by squeezing them out of sensible production and forcing them to play subsidized commodity games they couldn't afford to play. Now American food production is under the control of Giant Agricultural Corporate Business.
Who's next on the list? How about the small business sector? Obama's seems to be going along with the planned scenario: Squeeze small business people with some cost that is prohibitive -- MANDATORY HEALTHCARE FINANCING. Obama has turned his back on Medicare For All, which is proven to work in other countries. Instead he is playing the squash small business plan so similar to the squash individual farmers method: Present costs SO great, the small businesses disappear, only to be replaced by Wal-Marts.
This is New World Order Corporatism: Only one source for food -- Corporate Agriculture. Only one source for consumer goods and services and everything else -- Giant Corporate suppliers.
BO's health plan stinks and serves only consolidated multinationals while keeping us citizens locked into the same BROKEN system Micheal Moore exposed in "SICKO" -- where the Healthcare Corporations take our PREMIUMS and DENY our claims!!!!!!!!!!! Obama, the SYSTEM is BROKEN! WHY SHORE IT UP??? WHO does it serve? Why make sure small businesses are destroyed while we continue to pay in good faith for services that we won't get? It serves only the corporations.

Bush Calls on Palestinians to 'Just Die Already'
Posted by Arun Gupta
AlterNet on December 29, 2008 at 5:00 AM.
Responding to the dramatic escalation of violence in the Middle East, President Bush said that the Palestinians' refusal to "just die already" was "the root cause of the crisis."
Talking to reporters at the White House, Bush said, "See, the Israelis are just retaliating against the Palestinians' continued existence, but it's very inefficient. I mean, the Israelis have killed less than 300 Palestinians in two days of bombing Gaza. All those bombs and missiles cost a lot of money, and it's barely making a dent in the population."
The president added, "It would help the peace process significantly if Palestinians throughout the region were to all quit living, such as by stopping eating and drinking completely. We think the conflict could be ended in mere weeks."
Israeli government spokesmen endorsed the White House's new peace initiative in principle, but questioned whether it was the most effective method.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel was prepared to "provide durable plastic bags to every Palestinian with instructions in Arabic how to seal it tightly over their head so they would suffocate in mere minutes, rather than the much slower process of starvation."
Barak cautioned that the Israeli government could not pay for such an ambitious program on its own and was preparing to submit an emergency request to the U.S. Congress for more than a billion dollars to fund the plan.
According to White House spokesperson Dana Perino, President Bush was "studying the Israeli proposal seriously."
When asked about the Palestinian reaction, Perino said the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority had responded "enthusiastically" to the idea, and forwarded its own proposal of Palestinians marching "en masse into the Dead Sea to drown immediately."
Perino said, "We are pleased that our friends in the Palestinian Authority are ready to stand with the West and Israel against terrorism and act in the best interests of peace by committing mass suicide, but now is not the time to bog down the process with competing proposals."
"Having millions of decomposing corpses floating in the Dead Sea, while poetic, would require a lengthy environmental review that would mean an unacceptable delay in the plan. The President emphasizes that he is committed to a quick resolution of the conflict, but one that minimizes the costs for all parties involved. President Bush feels starvation is the best solution because it would allow maggots, dogs, vultures and other scavengers of carrion to consume the dead in a timely and thorough manner."

The automatic parallel-parking system is due to be unveiled next month at the North American Auto Show in Detroit, offered as an option on the Lincoln MKS sedan and MKT crossover-utility vehicle, according to the report. Ford will also show a hybrid version of the Ford Fusion sedan, which gets 8 more miles a gallon in city driving than Toyota's Camry hybrid.

13ben that image of the table-boat evokes such memories
childhood memories, i must have been around 5 or 6, we had just moved into a new public housing (talking about rome italy in the 50s rebuilding after the war) and we had a beautiful veranda/balcony which had a slight design fault; it would be corrected later but in the meantime, every time it rained water would pour in from the arched openings (large open unshuttered windows) and collect on the terrace floor with no place to drain out of (it would have to be mopped up) for us kids it was great fun. I remember one time, after a particularly heavy storm we had like about 5 or six inches of water (this terrace was set a little lower from the rest of the house, so that the water would stay contained into this space) my mother had gone to the market for the day's errands and we children, three of us all younger than 6 yrs - left home alone unsupervised - not unheard of in those days in that god-forsaken country - we thought it would be a good idea to do just like in 13ben picture above, we overturned the kitchen the table and turned it into a floating device, ah it was an amazing amount of gret fun until my mother returned from her outing and punished us severely i am sure, spanking and worse but to be honest i don't remember the punishment at all, just the great fun we had and the look on my mother's face (you would call that a scowl) yeah i must have been around 5 because we had just moved into the new lodgings; shortly after that they sent somebody from the public housing administration to install proper windows and enclose (rainproof) the place; me and my siblings were not very happy about this "improvement"
have a good day toni
i should get moving soon too, brand new day

Israel accused of ramming Gaza aid ship
Israel accused of ramming Gaza aid ship
Mark Tran
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 30 December 2008
Activists trying to bring aid to Gaza today claimed their boat had been rammed by Israeli gunboats in a "criminal attack" in international waters.
The Free Gaza Movement said its vessel, the Dignity, was intercepted by several Israeli vessels as it was heading to the Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli aerial bombardment since Saturday.
One gunboat rammed the Dignity on the port bow side, causing heavy damage, although no one was hurt, the group said.
"The Dignity is taking on water and appears to have engine problems," the movement said on its website. "When attacked, the Dignity was clearly in international waters, 90 miles off the coast of Gaza.

CNN Journalists were on board.
Here is the Israeli version of the story
Early Tuesday morning navy ships were called to stop a ship belonging to the International Solidarity Movement, which is recognized in Israel as a pro-Palestinian organization.
The Israelis contacted the ship's captain through the radio and ordered the ship to turn back.
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the captain of the aid boat carrying several journalists attempted to evade one of the Israeli missile ships. The Israeli ship stopped, but a collision could not be avoided.
Immediately after the incident the aid ship turned back. The Israeli naval ship offered to assist the passengers of the aid ship, who declined the offer. Israel then escorted the damaged ship until it exited the State's territorial waters.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yigal Palmor said, "While it was just another one of the kind of ships that we have already seen, the situation in Gaza is different now. The area was declared a closed military zone.
"The fact that the ship was carrying journalists, including a CNN crew that has already broadcasted live three times, proves that this was a provocation on the part of the media."

America's Crimes "Never Happened"
May We No Longer Be Silent
By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
December 30, 2008
Excerpt:
In his 2005 Nobel Lecture, British playwright Harold Pinter held the United States and its British puppet state accountable for “the systematic brutality, the widespread atrocities, the ruthless suppression of independent thought.”
Pinter presents a long list of American crimes and comes to Iraq: “The invasion of Iraq was a bandit act, an act of blatant state terrorism, demonstrating absolute contempt for the concept of international law. The invasion was . . . an act intended to consolidate American military and economic control of the Middle East masquerading--as a last resort--all other justifications having failed to justify themselves--as liberation.” Americans and their British puppets “have brought torture, cluster bombs, depleted uranium, innumerable acts of random murder, misery, degradation and death to the Iraqi people and call it ‘bringing freedom and democracy to the Middle East.”
“How many people do you have to kill before you qualify to be described as a mass murderer and a war criminal?” Pinter’s question can also be asked of Israel. Israel has been in violation of international law since 1967, protected by the United States’ veto of UN Resolutions condemning Israel for its violent, inhumane, barbaric, and illegal acts.
American evangelical Christians, who are degenerating into Zionists, are Israel’s greatest allies. Jesus is forsaken as Christians swallow whole the Israeli lies. A couple of years ago the US Presbyterian Church was so distressed by Israel’s immorality toward Palestinians that the church attempted to disinvest its investment portfolio from assets tainted with Israel. But the Israel Lobby was stronger. The Presbyterian Church was unable to stand up for Christian principles and knuckled under to the Israel Lobby’s pressure.
This is hardly surprising considering that the US government doesn’t stand for Christian principles either.

KUCINICH CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT INQUIRY
KUCINICH CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT UNITED NATIONS INQUIRY ON GAZA
Israeli government attacks civilians in violation of international law
Washington, Dec 29 -
U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich today released the following statement as Israeli attacks on Gaza have gone into a third day with a pending ground invasion of Gaza by Israel:
“Today I sent a letter to Secretary General Ban ki-Moon urging the United Nations to establish an independent inquiry of Israel's war against Gaza. The attacks on civilians represent collective punishment, which is a violation of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention (http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/92.htm ). The perpetrators of attacks against Israel must also be brought to justice, but Israel cannot create a war against an entire people in order to attempt to bring to justice the few who are responsible. The Israeli leaders know better. The world community, which has been very supportive of Israel's right to security and its right to survive, also has a right to expect Israel to conduct itself in adherence to the very laws which support the survival of Israel and every other nation,” Kucinich said.
“Israel is leveling Gaza to strike at Hamas, just as they pulverized south Lebanon to strike at Hezbollah. Yet in both cases civilian populations were attacked, countless innocents killed or injured, infrastructure targeted and destroyed, and civil law enforcement negated. All this was, and is, disproportionate, indiscriminate mass violence in violation of international law. Israel is not exempt from international law and must be held accountable. It is time for the UN to not just call for a cease-fire, but for an inquiry as to Israel's actions.”
According to published news reports, since the commencement of aerial strikes, over 300 Palestinians have been killed and approximately 1,400 have been wounded. The dead include 20 children under the age of 16--nearly half of them killed while on a school bus, according to the United Nations--and 9 women. The attack aggravated a humanitarian crisis wrought by the Israeli-imposed blockade of food, fuel, and medical supplies. With a population of 1.5 million people, the Gaza Strip is among the most densely populated territories in the world.

KUCINICH CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT UNITED NATIONS INQUIRY ON GAZA
Isn't this the clown who tried to Impeach President Bush...
Then went on to get 3% of the vote in the Dem Primary...??
I guess he provides the Comic Relief in Congress...!!
I wonder if Kucinich and Cindy...
I wonder if Kucinich and Cindy will try to Impeach President Obama....
After all, Obama has kept the Bush War Plan (The War Dog Plan) in place...
And Barack sure as hell plans on winning the War on Terror...!!
I guess Dennis and Cindy are in for a long pull..!!!
"we want a safe, efficient..."
Yeah but if it could parallel park itself as well, that would be pretty cool! :)
There's got to be a way we can get Moonface out!!
How about a dead _boy_?
Do you suppose we could we get some patriotic male escort to take one for the team?
Maybe three or four would be better.
I'd volunteer but, ya' know, no penis. Pity.
Like Eisenhower, each of us
Like Eisenhower, each of us bears witness to anyone and everyone who would deny these unspeakable crimes, or ever speak of repeating them. We must mean what we say when we speak the words "never again."
It was just a few years after the liberation of the camps that David Ben-Gurion declared the founding of the Jewish State of Israel. We know that the establishment of Israel was just and necessary, rooted in centuries of struggle and decades of patient work.
But 60 years later, we know that we cannot relent, we cannot yield, and as president I will never compromise when it comes to Israel's security.
Not when there are still voices that deny the Holocaust. Not when there are terrorist groups and political leaders committed to Israel's destruction. Not when there are maps across the Middle East that don't even acknowledge Israel's existence, and government-funded textbooks filled with hatred toward Jews. Not when there are rockets raining down on Sderot, and Israeli children have to take a deep breath and summon uncommon courage every time they board a bus or walk to school.
I have long understood Israel's quest for peace and need for security. But never more so than during my travels there two years ago. Flying in an [Israeli Defense Forces] helicopter, I saw a narrow and beautiful strip of land nestled against the Mediterranean. On the ground, I met a family who saw their house destroyed by a Katyusha rocket. I spoke to Israeli troops who faced daily threats as they maintained security near the blue line. I talked to people who wanted nothing more simple, or elusive, than a secure future for their children.
I have been proud to be a part of a strong, bipartisan consensus that has stood by Israel in the face of all threats. That is a commitment that both John McCain and I share, because support for Israel in this country goes beyond party.
