Brick TeeVee SOTU Wrap: Groundhog Day? - DC Beltway's Village Idiots are at once celebrating and panning Obama's first State Of The Union (SOTU) speech in their regular bombastic ways. The Brick TeeVee Crew's ears pricked up immediately when they heard the words "safe, clean nuclear power plants" and "clean coal". We felt like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day! We heard this speech before! We thought we were hallucinating but others noticed too. Harvey Wasserman reports "When Obama endorsed "safe, clean nuclear power plants" and "clean coal" in this year's State of the Union, more than 10,000 MoveOn.org members slammed that as the worst moment of the speech." . Wasserman lays out in Will Obama guarantee a new reactor war? (FreePress.org 1-30-10) Amidst utter chaos in the atomic reactor industry, Team Obama is poised to vastly expand a bitterly contested loan guarantee program that may cost far more than expected, both financially and politically. The long-stalled, much-hyped "Renaissance" in atomic power has failed to find private financing. New construction projects are opposed for financial reasons by fiscal conservatives such as the Heritage Foundation and National Taxpayers Union, and by a national grassroots safe energy campaign that has already beaten such loan guarantees three times. New reactor designs are being challenged by regulators in both the US and Europe. Key projects, new and old, are engulfed in political/financial uproars in Florida, Texas, Maryland, Vermont, New Jersey and elsewhere. And 53 years after the opening of the first commercial reactor at Shippingport, Pennsylvania, Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu is now convening a "Blue Ribbon" commission on managing radioactive waste, for which the industry still has no solution. Though stacked with reactor advocates, the commission may certify the death certificate for Nevada's failed Yucca Mountain dump. For more Wasserman see FreePress.org July 25, 2008 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the reactor revival is NOT ready for prime time AND June 18, 2009 Big Nuke's desperate radioactive hoax in impoverished Ohio featuring Rev. Gov. TED STRICKLAND and soon-to-be EX-senator GEORGE VOINOVICH. Ah yup. And then there's THIS from Project Censored's Top 25 Censored Stories for 2010: Censored Story #4. Nuclear Waste Pools in North Carolina: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has estimated that there is a 1:100 chance of pool fire happening under the best of scenarios. And the dossier on the Shearon Harris plant is far from the best. Congressman David Price of North Carolina sent the NRC a report by scientists at MIT and Princeton that pinpointed the waste pools as the biggest risk at the plant. “Spent fuel recently discharged from a reactor could heat up relatively rapidly and catch fire,” wrote Bob Alvarez, a former advisor to the Department of Energy and co-author of the report. “The fire could well spread to older fuel. The long-term land contamination consequences of such an event could be significantly worse than Chernobyl.. Don't EVEN get us started on the myth of "clean coal". Lobbying, global warming portend nuclear comeback
Judy Pasternak | Investigative Reporting Workshop
last updated: January 24, 2010 05:19:02 PM

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration soon may guarantee as much as $18.5 billion in loans to build new nuclear reactors to generate electricity, and Congress is considering whether to add billions more to support an expansion of nuclear power.

These actions come after an extensive decade-long campaign in which companies and unions related to the industry have spent more than $600 million on lobbying and nearly $63 million on campaign contributions, according to an analysis by the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University.

Not only does RahmObama and their ilk sell poison to America for the poison peddlers, they do it cheap. Give 'em a few millions and they'll give away BILLION$$$ in taxmonies to their bribers. It is just plain corrupt. Maybe technically the laws allow it. But how about ethically/morally? There's NO way to excuse "THE FIX IS IN".

No insurance company on Earth will cover 100+ new nuclear fission plants in the U.S. because every one is a potential CHERNOBYL!

So WHEN is Obama going to DISCLOSE TO the U.S. citizens how much it will cost the U.S. TAXPAYER to cover the new 100+ Nuclear Fission Plants' LIABILITIES???

WHEN, huh???

Oh, it is not in the bribe agreement he and Rahm have with the Nuclear Fission Industry?

After that Hell-on-Earth coal ash spill, I bet the same goes for all this so-called "clean" coal. WE TAXPAYERS will sign away our future to pay for future INEVITABLE LIABILITIES!

Absolutely nothing cost-effective about these deals when ALL the costs come out of our pockets and ALL the profits go into their pockets. In money terms, it is just a rip-off.

And that's not even getting into the INEVITABLE, irreversible environmental damage nuclear and coal entail. When one of these plants takes land, it takes it FOREVER, because that land becomes a DEAD ZONE. Do we need anymore DEAD ZONES?

Pro-Nuclear Fission folks say France proves it works
Submitted by nora on Sun, 01/31/2010 - 9:46pm.
If nukes work for France, then WHY is France scrambling to get rid of its waste?

France cannot handle all its waste, as they claim, by "recycling" it. France is sending its nuclear power plant radioactive waste to a South Carolina radioactive waste repository! And why is France hiring Mafioso waste handlers to take it away, and why is the waste turning up dumped in the Mediterranean Ocean?

It works for France? What a joke.

Obama pushes nuclear energy to boost climate bill

President Barack Obama is endorsing nuclear energy like never before, trying to win over Republicans and moderate Democrats on climate and energy legislation.

"I see an evolving attitude on energy by the president," said Sen. Lamar Alexander, who has called for 100 plants to be built in the next 20 years. Alexander, R-Tenn., said Obama's mention of nuclear energy in the address Wednesday night was the most important statement that the president has made on nuclear power.

"Up until now, the administration has been pursuing a national windmill policy instead of a national energy policy, which is the military equivalent of going to war in sailboats," he said.

Graham, in an Associated Press interview, said Obama's speech was an opening that he hoped to take advantage of to court more GOP support. But he said some pro-nuclear Republicans, while pleased with the president's remarks, are nervous about the other part of the bill — a plan to limit heat-trapping pollution, which will raise energy costs.

"The president did a great job putting nuclear on the table in a robust way, as well as offshore drilling for oil and natural gas," said Graham. "I hope Republicans understand we have a once in lifetime chance, but in return we have to come up with emissions standards."

Lieberman praised Obama for "reaching out beyond the Democratic Party base," but said it may not be enough to win the support of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. McCain criticized Obama's stance on nuclear power during the 2008 campaign, but has backed efforts to reduce global warming.

The nuclear energy industry is waiting to see what else the administration will deliver. Its wish list includes more financing for loan guarantees, as well as tax incentives for nuclear energy manufacturing and production facilities.

"The turnaround in the last year has just been astounding and welcome," said Jim Connaughton, the former chairman of the White House Council of Environmental Quality under President George W. Bush. Connaughton now works for Constellation Energy, the Baltimore-based energy company that owns a stake in five nuclear reactors and is seeking to build more.

=================================

RahmObama are prostitutes to Coal and Nuclear Industries.

I posted a bunch of stuff on climate change (what is real about it and what is questionable about it); that was a number of weeks back. And the thread running through much of it was predictive of this HARD SELL of nuclear power by the Corporatists.

The beginning of the link between global warming and using global warming as the way to sell waning Nuclear Fission for energy was MARGARET THATCHER. She pushed two threads -- carbon dioxide research and nuclear fission energy as the claimed counterpoint (since -- after 18 years or so when a reactor finally is up and running, the proponents claim it can perform and make no carbon dioxide -- although in its production and construction and waste removal/containment the process relies intensely on carbon-based energy.) So realize, when you hear Obama selling nuclear energy and DOUBLING its use, he's selling a Thatcher Product.

Now the argument for the Thatcher Product is worthless without accepting lock, stock and barrel the THEORY that CARBON DIOXIDE causes global warming, which has NOT been proved, and has been countered by numerous scientists (scientists who do not doubt global temperature change, but contend it is not a result of carbon dioxide specifically; some indicate that carbon dioxide increases are a post-temperature-rise after-effect).

So it looks like we are being sold a bill of goods here. And, notice, too, that Obama is not selling nuclear fission energy and so-called "clean" coal to us with any FACT-BASED information WHATSOEVER. Obama is selling nuclear and coal using ONLY the force of his personality and speaking style. Indeed, he is announcing it as a DONE DEAL. Is that the proper behavior? But it will mean BILLION$$$ to the Nuclear and Coal Industries! Obama has already been paid handsomely via donations by these industries. So, he is DELIVERING right now to his backers. This is the wrong way to go about spending our limited energy development monies. In truth it is corrupt.
