Bye Bayh

It's either a scandal or he's a massive dick- he gives Dems in IN only 4 days to find a replacement because of ballot requirements.

Evan Bayh!! Well, there it is!

Cue "Dems are fucked" hyperventilation in 3...2...1..

If all the hair-pulling about Bayh being a corporate douche was genuine, then this should be a good thing. Throw the corrupt bums out, and such! And if a Republican takes his place, at least we'll know our enemy, etc.

Here's an opportunity for Progressives to shine and prove they can provide a strong, honest populist candidate who can run an unbought grassroots campaign and win a Democratic or, even better, Third Party primary in a Red state rife with screeching Tea Partiers.

I can't wait to see who they pick! It's close enough for me to volunteer. I'd drive over in a heartbeat if she or he is worth it and hey it shouldn't be hard to get John Mellencamp to donate a concert or two.

Could someone give me a clear definition of

the main difference between a dem, a liberal and a progressive?

I'd say that 4 days until deadline...

Is a juicy incentive for Progressives to force a populist in there while the Party leaders are busy whining and before their machine plucks another ConservaDem from the mill!

Clinton/Bayh 2012?

I know this is going to sound insane, but look at the reason Bayh is giving for leaving office....very populist...and anti incumbent...

why risk burning bridges like that, especially if you are going to need your connections in the senate for things like getting projects funded...?

Remember who the front runner was for Hilary's veep?

Clinton is currently in the premium position to pit herself against Obama on foreign policy and play her hawkishness against one of the rights main myths about Obama, soft on international terrorism...

this is still half baked and cooking under my tinfoil hat, but it is at least plausible...the tell will be if Hilary starts pushing openly against Obama's foreign policy in a big way.....

...and look at the date of the announcement...Presidents Day.... BOO!!!

Imagine a slave labor camp in a town.

A progressive would do everything in her or his power to abolish the camp and set free the slaves.

A liberal would struggle to ensure that the inmates in the camp have a gymnasium and a decent coffee shop in order to make their lives better.

A dem would campaign to get elected administrator of the camp, on the enlightened ticket.

social security and medicare

when you look at the proposed budget:

its pretty clear that medicare and social security are a real big part of it, or are they?

last i recall, we all pay a seperate social security and medicare tax. i wonder how big those pie slices are if you reduce them by the targeted tax. next if you take the cap off the contribution, what happens.

its also not clear that the budget accounts for all the expenditures. why aren't the wars listed as seperate items?

===

then you read something like this:

During FY 2009, the federal government collected approximately $2.1 trillion in tax revenue. Primary receipt categories included individual income taxes (43%), Social Security/Social Insurance taxes (42%), and corporate taxes (7%).

it should be pretty obvious that corporations aren't paying their fair share.

My thoughts on Bahy

Wants to run for Governor in Indiana, then run for President in 2016.

Possibly change party. Long shot but possible.

I don't think Hillary will run for prez. She can't run against Obama in 12 and still be Sec of State although she could resign, but I doubt it.

I also think people will have second thoughts about him. Even though he fulfilled his term, he will be labeled a quitter. The people will want to know why he would not fight for them in the Senate.

Obama could turn it around and could get someone to run but he has to become very populist and demand that the Senate change the Finance laws, change trade policies so people don't lose jobs to outsourcing, and pressing Congress for a strong Labor Relations bill. Indiana lost alot of jobs to outsourcing and they want to see action to help bring jobs back.

WHAT BAYH IS THINKING....

WHAT BAYH IS THINKING.... Sen. Evan Bayh's (D-Ind.) retirement is a shocker, leading many to wonder what on earth a popular incumbent with plenty of money and a big lead in the polls is thinking. Bayh alluded to his frustrations on the Hill as part of his rationale.

"Two weeks ago, the Senate voted down a bipartisan commission to deal with one of the greatest threats facing our nation: our exploding deficits and debt. The measure would have passed, but seven members who had endorsed the idea instead voted 'no' for short-term political reasons," he said. "Just last week, a major piece of legislation to create jobs -- the public's top priority -- fell apart amid complaints from both the left and right. All of this and much more has led me to believe that there are better ways to serve my fellow citizens, my beloved state4 [sic] and our nation than continued service in Congress."

This sounds a bit like Bill Bradley's rationale in 1996 -- politics on Capitol Hill has become ugly and difficult, so I'm walking away.

But it's not exactly a compelling explanation. To hear Evan Bayh tell it, Republicans have made it impossible for Congress to work on issues important to him ... so he's decided to make it easier for the Republican caucus to have more power.

When the going gets tough, the conserva-Dems pack up and go home?

What's more, while I'm hardly familiar with Indiana's election procedures, reliable sources report that the filing deadline for candidates interested in the Senate race is this week, meaning Dems will have to scramble. If these reports are accurate, it would appear Bayh is hurting Democrats twice -- once by walking away when they need his vote, and again by making it extremely difficult for the party to find, recruit, and qualify a top-tier candidate to run in his stead.

For what it's worth, a great deal of the early talk -- and by "early," I mean "the last hour" -- is about the DSCC recruiting Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D), a Blue Dog and former county police sheriff from Indiana's Southwest corner.

Stay tuned.

Update: It appears that the signatures for a prospective candidate are due tomorrow, and it's extremely unlikely any Dem could pull this off in time. What's more likely, then, is that the Indiana Democratic Party will be responsible for selecting a candidate -- there would be no primary.

Don’t Let the Door Hit You in the Ass on the Way Out, Evan
By: Blue Texan Monday February 15, 2010 10:30 am

Here’s Steve Benen on Bayh’s weak ass excuse for quitting.

To hear Evan Bayh tell it, Republicans have made it impossible for Congress to work on issues important to him … so he’s decided to make it easier for the Republican caucus to have more power.

When the going gets tough, the conserva-Dems pack up and go home?

Pretty much. Except they “pack up and go home” while blaming both “left and right” and in a manner that screws the Democratic Party.

Why are people surprised? Let’s not forget who this guy is.

Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), who is now being mentioned as a strong candidate for Sen. Barack Obama’s running mate, co-sponsored the 2003 resolution authorizing the Iraq war.

Bayh not only voted for the war and embraced its neo-conservative rationale by chairing the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, as a New York Times profile noted this week. He went further, taking the single most aggressive, pro-war position possible. The few Democratic co-sponsors of the White House Iraq resolution provide context for the kind of senators who shared Bayh’s position at the time — they include Joseph I. Lieberman (Conn), Zell Miller (Ga.) and John Breaux (La.).

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Bayh questioned Dems' 'backbone'

From NBC's Ken Strickland
When President Obama addressed Senate Democrats at their policy retreat earlier this month, Sen. Evan Bayh asked Obama if Democrats can really be trusted to tackle the nation's fiscal problems. Was Bayh expressing frustration then that may have led in part to today's announcement?

He posed his question in a way "that I think is on the minds of people in my state, and perhaps in the minds of independents and moderate Republicans and conservative Democrats around the country?"

"I think many people across the country candidly look at us and say, 'I don't know if the Democrats are willing to take this on.' They think we want to tax too much and spend too much, and do we have the backbone to really stand up and make some of these hard decisions?"

Bayh credited Obama for taking some tough steps like freezing non-security discretionary spending and restraint on earmarks. "That's not always popular among our group, but to your credit, you've called for those things," Bayh said.

He ended his question specifically asking about trust: Did Americans really trust Democrats to get the country's fiscal house in order?

"So my question to you, Mr. President, is speaking to independents, conservative Democrats, moderate Republicans -- people who know we have to do this -- why should the Democratic Party be trusted?" Bayh asked. "And are we willing to make some of the tough decisions to actually head this country in a better direction?"

Obama's initial response: "Well, I'll tell you why the Democratic Party should be trusted -- because the last time this budget was balanced, it was under a Democratic President who made some very tough decisions."

Poverty is a huge issue I hold close to my heart. One third of Hoosiers live in poverty. In some pockets the rate of poverty is even higher. In Bloomington, Indiana, where I live, 41.6% of people live in poverty. I created www.thepoorclub.org to address the problems caused by privatization of services to poor Hoosiers. We must create and strengthen programs for job creation, low income housing, and legal and medical services to the poor.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

wracking my brains 60th...can't come up with anyone even close to progressive who could try for that seat....besides, after reading toni's post, it looks like the fix is in...

Indiana Democrats should raise hell over this...maybe even get a fraud investigation started against Bayh...something is definitely not right here....

60th

Don't know exactly what you can do with the campaign coffers but would think he's have to return the money if he intended to run for Governor or not run at all. That would be his Senate re-election monies. I think he has to use up the other money by giving it to the party or another Dem candidate.

May be good to find out those rules of campaign funds and how they can be used.

Josh Marshall --- Broken

Saying Washington is broken and getting a few shout-outs from the Broder gang is almost de rigueur for middle of the road senators, especially Democrats, when they retire. And it's hard to disagree with the judgment in general. Watching what's happened over the last year it's hard not to believe that something is fundamentally off-kilter in our national government -- just not, I think, what Bayh thinks it is. I think the most generous read of Bayh's decision is simply that he was bored. He just said that his decision was in part because he was "an executive at heart," which is probably a very honest explanation. He just preferred being governor. And that's fine. It's another way of saying he was bored.

But let's not paper over the fact that he says our national government is broken. And his decision is to walk away.

The article I posted from TPM said:

"D'Ippolito said she is about 1,000 signatures short of the overall goal of 4,500, and is especially short in the 8th Congressional District, the area represented by Democrat Brad Ellsworth. Ideally she would like to get a few thousand more than the 4,500, in order to avoid missing out because of individual signatures getting disqualified over the errors that can pop up in this process."

The news about Sen. Evan Bayh opting not to seek reelection had been out for an hour before Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid heard from him.

As we reported earlier, Bayh (D-IN) phoned President Obama this morning about his decision.

But an aide to Reid tells us that Bayh called the majority leader at about 11:45 a.m. to let him know.

There had been some rumors Bayh would pack it in a few months ago. But I'm told that the impression as late as the end of last week that everything was full-speed ahead for reelection was not just something people on the outside thought. That's how it looked to almost everyone on the inside too. One source tells me, "from what staff/campaign staff knew, it was full steam ahead. Bayh was doing everything someone who was running hard for re-election would be doing. That very effective attack on Coats was largely from the DSCC, but Bayh people were involved and active. Bayh had recently picked someone to manage his race, ads were in the works, etc."

Former Dem Governor Douglas Wilder: Democrats ‘Whistling by Their Graveyard’; Time for White House Political Shake-Up

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, D-Va., was an early supporter of President Obama -- and something of a trailblazer for him, as the nation’s first elected African-American governor.

Now, the 79-year-old Wilder is leading efforts to sound alarm bells about the state of the Democratic Party.

On ABC’s “Top Line” today, Wilder told us that the Obama White House still seems not to get how toxic the political environment is this year -- or how drastic the steps that need to be taken to change that are.

(Video at link)

“I think the problem that we have is that some people have been whistling by their graveyard, as if nothing is going on -- ‘Well, everything is fine,’ ” Wilder, who served as Virginia’s governor from 1990-1994, told me and ABC’s Jonathan Karl.

“And they keep talking about the president’s personal popularity. And we see in recent polls coming out in the last several days to show that that might not be the case. And so I think it’s anybody’s guess as to how bad it could be in terms of the House being taken over, in terms of the Senate even now.”

Wilder last week called for DNC Chairman Tim Kaine -- a fellow former Virginia governor -- to leave his post in the wake of a string of electoral setbacks.

He told us that, aside from replacing Kaine, the president needs to widen the circle of advisers he listens to.

“Why the people around the president -- if they’re advising him to stick with health care, stay with health care, give the kinds of monies for the stimulus package that were given with no strings attached, and then to come back and say ‘well, we’re going to get on jobs,’ – but when?” Wilder said. “And the confidence of the American people is dwindling on a steady basis.”

He continued: “Do you need to listen to other people? Do you need to reach out to other people who’ve had some experience in governing, rather than getting elected? He had the most brilliant team to assemble to get him elected. The question is: are these people capable of governance?”

Said Wilder: “I know that most of the American people want to see him do well. But you can’t do well the way you have been continuing. You’ve got to stop that and get a different direction.”

On Sen.Evan Bayh's surprise decision to retire rather than seek another term in 2010, Wilder said: “Wow… For the Democrats to lose him it’s big, big, big!”

Republicans, he said, are likely to make “substantial gains” in both the House and the Senate.

Wilder also pointed out that, even if Democrats do retain control of the Senate, they’re likely to have a considerably narrower majority than the one that’s produced so much frustration this year: “Let’s assume this -- if you can’t do it with 60 votes, and if you can’t do it with 59 votes, a single reduction will bring about a great deal of difficulty.”

Mike Pence declines again on

Mike Pence declines again on Evan Bayh seat

House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-Ind.) is out again.

After saying he was not running for Evan Bayh’s Senate seat a few weeks ago, Pence was beginning to reconsider with Bayh’s surprising retirement announcement Monday. But now Pence is out for good, even though the seat is now one of the strongest candidates for a Republican takeover.

After consulting with his political staff Pence announced Monday afternoon – for the second time this political season – that he is staying in the House.

There were several factors that Pence weighed in his potential run. First, he had already passed on the opportunity to run last month, citing the GOP's strong position in the House. Further, he's considered among the strongest candidates for governor of Indiana in 2012. Plus, Pence would need to gain thousands signatures by noon tomorrow for the Republican primary.

Privately, aides to Pence say he was also concerned about Bayh's $13 million in the bank, but now Pence is going to hope for a Republican takeover in the House, which could propel him into a top leadership position in that chamber. And then he could still run for governor in 2012.

5 Million, Big problem! BIG PROBLEM!

Five Million Workers to Exhaust Unemployment Benefits by June

Back in December, the qualification dates for existing tiers of unemployment benefits were extended for an additional two months. Time is up at the end of February.

Now another extension is needed or millions of workers will lose benefits over the next few months.

The National Employment Law Project (NELP) released a new report last week showing that ...

1.2 million jobless workers will become ineligible for federal unemployment benefits in March unless Congress extends the unemployment safety net programs from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). By June, this number will swell to nearly 5 million unemployed workers nationally who will be left without any jobless benefits.

Currently, 5.6 million people are accessing one of the federal extensions (34-53 weeks of Emergency Unemployment Compensation; 13-20 weeks of Extended Benefits, a program normally funded 50 percent by the states).

This table shows the NELP's projections:

Of the almost 1.2 million workers facing a cut off of benefits in March alone:

# 380,000 workers will exhaust their 26 weeks of state benefits without accessing the temporary EUC extension program or the permanent federal program of Extended Benefits.

# Another 814,000 workers will not be eligible to continue receiving EUC past their current tier of benefits.

Ken Starr named Baylor

Ken Starr named Baylor University President

Source: Waco Tribune Herald

Kenneth W. Starr, the former independent counsel whose work led to the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton, was named president of Baylor University this morning, sources said.

The 63-year-old Starr, who has been dean of Pepperdine University’s School of Law in Malibu, Calif. since April, 2004 will become Baylor’s 14th president.

Starr’s appointment as president of Baylor brings a nationally known, but highly controversial figure to the Waco campus at a time of prolonged and occasionally tumultuous transition from a teaching school to one focused on research and the pursuit of a top-tier ranking among colleges nationally. It ends a nearly 20-month-long search that began when former Baylor President John M. Lilley was fired in July of 2008.

Starr will always be recognized as the dogged independent prosecutor who relentlessly pursued Clinton’s role in a land deal called Whitewater and the president’s affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. But he brings to Baylor a deep resume filled with roles in public service that go back three decades, as well as a Rolodex filled with national contacts that may serve him well in the key areas of academia and fund-raising.

Op-Ed: Disorder Out of Chaos

The American Psychiatric Association, with its release this week of proposed revisions to its authoritative Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, is recommending that Asperger’s be dropped. If this revision is adopted, the condition will be folded into the category of “autism spectrum disorder,” which will no longer contain any categories for distinct subtypes of autism like Asperger’s and “pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified” (a category for children with some traits of autism but not enough to warrant a diagnosis).

The change is welcome, because careful study of people with Asperger’s has demonstrated that the diagnosis is misleading and invalid, and there are clear benefits to understanding autism as one condition that runs along a spectrum.

Ingeteam will build plant in Milwaukee

Ingeteam, a Spanish manufacturer of wind-turbine generators, will locate its new factory in the Menomonee Valley, Gale Klappa, co-chairman of the Milwaukee 7 economic development coalition, announced Monday.

The plant will create about 270 jobs, said Julia Taylor, president of the Greater Milwaukee Committee.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, also a Milwaukee 7 co-chairman, said the plant will be located near the western end of the valley. The exact site will be announced Tuesday, said Patrick Curley, Barrett's chief of staff.

Ingeteam chose the valley because of its proximity to workers, I-94 and Spanish-speaking neighborhoods, as well as Milwaukee's "great reputation for manufacturing," Barrett said. This will be Ingeteam's first manufacturing facility in North America, Klappa said.

Could someone give me a clear definition of

the main difference between a dem, a liberal and a progressive?

» ======================================

These are the definitions I am making up in an effort to bring clarity about what I am seeing.

A Progressive is the vanguard of change, working to communicate ideas for making social/economic/ecological existence better, more fair, closer to an ideal goal.

A Liberal accepts the Progressive's ideas or at least some of them and is willing to incorporate them in his/her worldview, actions, voting choices, etc.

The Dem is an idea sold by the Political Establishment, its marketed benefits include support for certain ideas put forward by Progressives and accepted by Liberals. A Dem is also a sort of political opportunist who is willing to either 1) run with some of these ideas for a number of reasons that reflect personal choices of each separate Dem, or 2) FAKE running with Progressive Ideas and a Liberal Worldview.

At this time, I'd say Barack Obomber is a 2) Dem who co-opted the CHANGE meme of Progressives and now thumbs his nose at ACTIVE Progressive concerns!

Now I'd say Howard Dean is a Liberal.

And Ralph Nader is a Progressive.

And Dianne Fienstein? A sewer dweller.

I thought you already saw it coming... It's called NO jobs.

The desperation of many Americans will parallel the desperation of Haiti's compounded poverty+quake victims if Obama doesn't put forward a Government JOBS PROGRAM now. What is he waiting for? And why is he waiting for it?

I'm surprised people don't see this coming. So what if there are two or three more extensions of unemployment benefits; such stop-gap measures are meaningless if there are no jobs for them to transition into. AND THERE ARE NO JOBS FOR THEM TO TRANSITION INTO BECAUSE THE FEDS (the Feds are the ones with most of our tax money, remember!) ARE NOT MAKING ANY JOBS PROGRAMS!

Searched all morning for a new hood latch cable and finally ended up looking at the ford dealership [the one that used to be close by closed] and found that I now have a mega ford parts warehouse across town. Got the cable and on a hunch also replaced the mass airflow sensor [I don't usually replace sensors unless I can first verify that they are bad.] This solved a long standing problem with a lag that would occur when I stepped on the gas. Bet my mileage improves too. Also bought a ROUSH hat at the performance counter.

Since I was on the west side I stopped at my favorite Mexican restaurant, La Canasta, and got two of my favorite red burritos. The workmans special is also a fav, red sauce beef, beans and rice. Love their red sauce, just thick enough that it clings a bit. Was going to save the other one, but I'm going to eat it now.

Fox News Scolds WellPoint

Fox News Scolds WellPoint Rate Hike, Not For Hurting Consumers, But For Energizing Health Reform Advocates

California Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, a subsidiary of health insurance giant WellPoint, announced recently that it would be hiking premiums for customers in the individual market by up to 39 percent. The looming hike unleashed a firestorm of criticism, and provoked two Democratic lawmakers to launch congressional probes into the matter. Even a spokesman for Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) was compelled to feign concern, telling reporters, “If the argument is that the WellPoint hike means we need reform, well, ‘duh.’”

Earlier today on Fox Business, WellPoint VP Brad Fluegel appeared to discuss the hikes. Fox hosts Charles Payne and and Stu Varney lashed out at WellPoint for increasing rates just when “it was safe to get out of the healthcare debate.” The hosts were uninterested with how the increasing rates would affect customers and struggling families in California. Instead, the pair attacked Fluegel for re-energizing advocates for health reform. Payne groaned, asking Fluegel why he didn’t “take Wall Street’s lead” and “wait for this to blow over and maybe a year from now try to hike rates”:

PAYNE: But Brad this is like Jaws 2, just when you thought it was safe to get out of the healthcare debate, you brought everybody back into it. [...] Didn’t someone though, wasn’t there a committee that said listen, let’s take Wall Street’s lead, do the minimum we can, wait for this to blow over and maybe a year from now try to hike rates?

VARNEY: You handed the politicians red meat at a time when healthcare is being discussed. You gave it to them! [...] You couldn’t see this coming? I mean really, you couldn’t see this coming? [...]

VARNEY: You actually did make a net in that quarter in twleve weeks, you made what, $500 million net profit didn’t you? You tell that to a politician and they’re going to say, ‘you made a half billion dollars in twelve weeks and now you put the price up 25%.’

Watch it: at link

HCAN has responded to the WellPoint rate hike by releasing a report demonstrating how premium increases have been feeding insurer profits, not paying for health care costs. “The report finds that the top five largest for-profit insurance companies increased their profits by $12.2 billion last year while dropping coverage for 2.7 million Americans.“ Pending the investigation and a review from the California Insurance Commissioner, WellPoint has postponed the hikes until May 1, 2010.

At the end of the interview, the Fox hosts chuckled with the WellPoint VP. They apologized for being so harsh and warmly reminded Fluegel that their criticism of insurer profits was only meant to be “warm up” for Rep. Henry Waxman’s (D-CA) investigation. “You did very good,” cooed one of the cohosts.

Secret Joint Raid Captures

Secret Joint Raid Captures Taliban’s Top Commander
By MARK MAZZETTI and DEXTER FILKINS

WASHINGTON — The Taliban’s top military commander was captured several days ago in Karachi, Pakistan, in a secret joint operation by Pakistani and American intelligence forces, according to American government officials.

The commander, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, is an Afghan described by American officials as the most significant Taliban figure to be detained since the American-led war in Afghanistan started more than eight years ago. He ranks second in influence only to Mullah Muhammad Omar, the Taliban’s founder and a close associate of Osama bin Laden before the Sept. 11 attacks.

Mullah Baradar has been in Pakistani custody for several days, with American and Pakistani intelligence officials both taking part in interrogations, according to the officials.

It was unclear whether he was talking, but the officials said his capture had provided a window into the Taliban and could lead to other senior officials. Most immediately, they hope he will provide the whereabouts of Mullah Omar, the one-eyed cleric who is the group’s spiritual leader.

Disclosure of Mullah Baradar’s capture came as American and Afghan forces were in the midst of a major offensive in southern Afghanistan.

His capture could cripple the Taliban’s military operations, at least in the short term, said Bruce O. Riedel, a C.I.A. veteran who last spring led the Obama administration’s Afghanistan and Pakistan policy review.

Details of the raid remain murky, but officials said that it had been carried out by Pakistan’s military spy agency, the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, and that C.I.A. operatives had accompanied the Pakistanis.

Dr. Gabor Maté: “When the Body Says No: Understanding the Stress-Disease Connection”

The Vancouver-based Dr. Gabor Maté argues that too many doctors seem to have forgotten what was once a commonplace assumption—that emotions are deeply implicated in both the development of illness and in the restoration of health. Based on medical studies and his own experience with chronically ill patients at the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital, where he was the medical coordinator for seven years, Dr. Gabor Maté makes the case that there are important links between the mind and the immune system. He found that stress and individual emotional makeup play critical roles in an array of diseases. [includes rush transcript]

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - A newly resurfaced 1996 video shows the convicted killer of a Kansas abortion doctor discussing his anti-government militia views with an Iowa anti-abortion activist.

The Associated Press has obtained a copy of the nearly 50-minute interview with Scott Roeder that aired in October 1996 on a Des Moines cable show.

In it, Roeder talks with Iowa abortion opponent Dave Leach about his Freemen philosophy. He also discusses his appeal of a 1996 conviction for carrying bomb-making materials in his unlicensed vehicle.

Leach plans to post a preview of the interview on YouTube and sell copies of the entire tape.

You're poor, so it's your fault! How dare you be poor!

In hard times, Americans blame the poor

By Alfred Lubrano
Inquirer Staff Writer

Last month, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer of South Carolina said that when the government helps the poor, it's like people feeding stray animals that continually "breed." And just last week, Colorado state legislator Spencer Swalm said poor people in single-family homes are "dysfunctional." Both statements riled some Americans from the Piedmont to the Rockies and underscored a widely held belief: In tough times, people are tough on the poor.

In an April 2009 poll by the Pew Research Center in Washington, 72 percent agreed with the statement that "poor people have become too dependent on government assistance programs." That's up from 69 percent in 2007.

"The economic downturn has made the middle class less generous toward others," said Guy Molyneux, a partner at Hart Research Associates, a Washington firm that researches attitudes toward the poor. "People are less supportive of the government helping the poor, because they feel they're not getting enough help themselves. "It's a divided country, splitting on a fault line: those who think the poor are poor because they don't try enough, and those who think the poor simply need help."

Matt Wray, a sociologist at Temple University, agreed: "Hatred of the poor is fueled by the middle class's fear of falling during hard times." Americans don't understand how the poor are victimized by a lack of jobs, inefficient schools, and unsafe neighborhoods, experts say. "People ignore the structural issues - jobs leaving, industry becoming more mechanized," said Yale sociologist Elijah Anderson, renowned for his study of the Philadelphia poor. "Then they point to the poor and ask, 'Why aren't you making it?' "

Malloy going over Robert Parry article

wherein Parry indicates Cheney's repeated confessions of illegality are disregarded yet again.

http://www.consortiumnews.com/2010/021410.html

[excerpt]

On Sunday, Cheney pronounced himself “a big supporter of waterboarding,” a near-drowning technique that has been regarded as torture back to the Spanish Inquisition and that has long been treated by U.S. authorities as a serious war crime, such as when Japanese commanders were prosecuted for using it on American prisoners during World War II.

Cheney was unrepentant about his support for the technique. He answered with an emphatic "yes" when asked if he had opposed the Bush administration’s decision to suspend the use of waterboarding – after it was employed against three “high-value detainees” sometimes in repetitive sequences. He added that waterboarding should still be “on the table” today.

Cheney then went further. Speaking with a sense of impunity, he casually negated a key line of defense that senior Bush officials had hidden behind for years – that the brutal interrogations were approved by independent Justice Department legal experts who thus gave the administration a legitimate reason to believe the actions were within the law.

However, on Sunday, Cheney acknowledged that the White House had told the Justice Department lawyers what legal opinions to render. In other words, the opinions amounted to ordered-up lawyering to permit the administration to do whatever it wanted.

Yesterday I was puzzled by Bob Schieffer of Face The Nation spending so much time questioning current V.P. Why give Cheney's twisted torture arguments and Global War on Terror Chicken Little tantrums any more validity than they have already garnered in America?, as if torture were just an opinion and not an obvious crime. Was Schieffer trying to clarify whether or not there are differences between the the Obama Adminstration and the Bush Administration? Whatever the overall goal of that line of questions, it was sickening to see Cheney and his sick words given any more exposure.

Hmmm. What's that supposed to mean? Is that the worst way to insult a man in your 'sexist' world?

Does GENDER determine whether one's comments are acceptable?

By the way, Fernando, in case you didn't know it, both males and females have rights in this country.

Einstein's brain

This is CREEPY. Who needs horror movies and spooky novels?

Just how did that guy have the right to OWN and SELL Einstein's brain?

[excerpt]

1985
Feb. 14: The woman who cut up Albert Einstein's brain said yesterday that Al had exactly 73 percent more upstairs than the average guy. Marian Diamond, a professor at UC Berkeley, has been slicing and dicing the physicist's brain and peeking at it through a microscope. What she found, she said, was exciting. There are two kinds of brain cells - glial cells and neurons. The neurons do the thinking and the glial cells are "support cells," doing the more mundane chores of running a cerebrum. Back in the left portion of Section 39 of Einstein's brain, Diamond said, there were a whole lot more glial cells for every neuron than there were in Section 39 of the average brain. Seventy-three percent more. Which may be the reason why Einstein was so smart, although Diamond said she could not be sure. "No one knows how cells think," she said. Diamond said she dreamed up the project after seeing a picture of Einstein's pickled brain in a magazine. The brain was owned by a Missouri pathologist, one of the doctors who conducted the autopsy on Einstein in 1955. It took three years of phone calls and letters before the man in Missouri could be persuaded to mail off small chunks to Diamond last spring. Where is the great man's brain now? Diamond strolled down the hall to her laboratory where the walls were covered with bottles full of human and rat brains. "Somewhere in there," she said, "I'm not exactly sure what we did with it."

"In late January, an Al Qaeda operative headed from Pakistan on his way to Yemen was arrested in the Persian Gulf country of Oman, a U.S. counter-terrorism official confirmed.

There has been no public announcement of the arrest. But in a possible indication of the operative's importance, just a few days later, two postings on a jihadi web forum suggested that Al Qaeda leaders were worried and wanted their "commanders" to take immediate precautions.

The postings stated that the "captured brother" -- identified as a "field commander" named Abdullah Saleh al-Eidan who went by the name of "Barud"- - was "on his way back from Afghanistan" and had been turned over to Saudi authorities.

Even more noteworthy, the postings -written by a fellow Al Qaeda "brother" - reported that Al Eidan had with him 300 "important phone numbers" as well as pictures, names and documents from Afghanistan."

And, what the probability of that having led to the offensive of the past week and Mullah Baradar's capture.

That would pretty much incinerate a host of right wing talking points and memes on "keeping us safe"

USA should break GAZA bockade, says WA congressman

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/02/15/world/AP-ML-Palestinians-US.h...

[excerpt]

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) -- The United States should break Israel's blockade of Gaza and deliver badly needed supplies by sea, a U.S. congressman told Gaza students.

Rep. Brian Baird, a Democrat from Washington state, also urged President Barack Obama's Mideast envoy to visit the Hamas-ruled territory to get a firsthand look at the destruction caused by Israeli's military offensive last year.

The Obama administration, like its predecessor, shuns Hamas because the Islamic militant group refuses to recognize Israel or renounce violence.

Israel and Egypt have restricted access to Gaza since Hamas' victory in parliament elections in 2006 and tightened the blockade after Hamas seized Gaza by force in 2007.

Israel allows humanitarian supplies and food into Gaza, but has kept out cement and other building supplies needed for reconstruction. Israel argues such materials could be diverted by Hamas for military use.

Baird, who has announced his retirement from Congress, told a group of Gaza students Sunday evening that the U.S. should not condone the blockade.

''We ought to bring roll-on, roll-off ships and roll them right to the beach and bring the relief supplies in, in our version of the Berlin airlift,'' he said, adding that the supplies could be delivered to U.N. aid agencies.

It's pretty funny from where I'm sitting.

Most people on the blog know that cent is a sexist who uses faggoty and girly insults straight out of an eighth grade locker room. His language implies that manliness is next to godliness.

Fernando made a joke directed at the heart of cent's sexism by intimating that male cent might actually be female cent (an insult taken directly from cent's catalog of insults, second only to being called a queer).

The irony flew over the top of nora's head causing her to accuse Fernando of sexism. nora loves -isms.

The joke continued flying over the top of Ms_Anthrope's head causing her to postulate that cent's birthplace indicates that cent is male. (Don't ask. Whatever her reasoning process is, you don't want to know.)

Then cent showed up and instantly wrote "in your ass" imagery followed by indelicate commentary on mothers and whores.

It doesn't get any funnier nor more predictable than this.

sorry cat chew...

I couldn't get through it. Not my cup of tea...wifey's neither...

There was another one that came out around the same time, same type of genre, about a folk singing group, like Peter Paul and Mary...well, that one sucked too...they are all spinal tap knock offs. Christopher Guest is a good writer and all, but there is only on Rob Reiner...

couth? well, yeah, I could probably use a refill now and again.

I am someone who cares about and has a high regard for each of you and I don‘t think I‘m alone.

Sunday’s thread was a pretty tough read; and, as I did so, I remembered my father telling my three brothers as youngsters, who frequently used the living room as a wrestling mat to settle whatever they were fighting about, “take it outside.”

I enjoy a spirited debate. I even appreciate that there are times when someone just needs to get something off their chest or make a particular observation. So, may I suggest: if it's just impossible to scroll past a specific comment, as Sandy has suggested several times, and if the discussion will likely take several, and heated, rounds to resolve, it might be better to save the space on the current thread and take it to an “Open Mike.” If others want to mix it up, or give their two cents worth, they can wander over and participate in the fray, or just be a spectator or not get involved at all. And no matter how intense it gets, it's in separate forum and left there when it's done.

All of the posts, whether it is regarded as fact or fiction, are relevant and of value to some of us if not all. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again and again, I want to read everything you’ve got because it tells me where I want to draw the line for myself. For me, that line varies issue to issue, day to day, and the more information the better. I even appreciate the troll posts for it reiterates to me, there for the grace of God (or insert your preference), go I. Everyone’s contributions, whether it’s news, fact, theory, or, a seemingly pointless and/or over-the-top assertion, are random puzzle pieces of life that might fit somewhere to possibly make sense of it all. Or not.

Clearly, what we all have in common is our regard for Sam’s insight and sense of humor to say the least; and, he in turn favors us with his blog with so few restrictions, trusting us to do right by each other. IMHO, we are all intelligent enough to make our own assessment of the posts submitted and opinions expressed, and to respectfully respond whether we passionately agree or not.

Now with that said, do you want to take this outside?…

I have to draw the line somewhere. Otherwise, next thing you know, someone will call Stuart Saves His Family unmemorable, and some other philistine will claim Defending Your Life is poorly paced, and then, well... be warned, I cannot be held responsible for my actions!

re: Best in Show

both spinal tap & best in show were mockumentaries
both were co-written by christopher guest, who co-wrote both and is a comic genius

so you'd expect to see similarities...
so your criticism that best in show is second rate because it's in the same mould is ridiculous

just because christopher guess directed his gaze to dog shows
doesn't detract from it being a brilliant comedy

in conclusion, and if i may paraphrase you
Your rationale for dissing best in show is in your ass

oops...everybody quiet...the rage-aholic is back...

don't talk too loudly or you will upset him...the watch out... he will make you his "enemy" ...he can be sooo mean...

pfft...here's some more "faggotry" for you crank...why don't you blow me...and some more butt references for you...you are an anal retentive control freak...

I lost all respect for you yesterday crank...you are nothing more than an abusive asshole, know it all, who rages when someone disagrees with him. I am sure that has gone over with people in your world, but your raging does not bother me...just so much background noise...

You are sharp as a tack but you have the emotional depth and maturity of a raging 2 year old...

2 year old...anal-retentive...hmmmm...did we have potty training issues Crank? is that why you are so hung up on butt references? ...where is michele when you need her..

get help crank...or don't...but one thing is for sure...I will NEVER back down from you... for all your smarts you are too stupid to identify your opponent...the one sure way to get me to fight is to try to intimidate me... the more you bellow, the stronger and more determined I will become... so you are going to need to develop some emotional chops, and a different strategy if you want to go through me....

another thing...I have decided to make your picking on nora personal to me...why? because you are an asshole, thats why...so we will be going shot for shot until you knock it off...you may be smarter and better educated than I am, but I am tougher than you are Crank...and the better street fighter, so in the end you will lose...

sorry toni, and the rest of the blog, but this has got to end... you all need to understand that even if nora were to leave, it wouldn't be long before crank would target someone else...for some other bullshit reason, and do the same thing...he has a sick pattern going here, and no one else is standing up to him...

I know who you are crank...and I am not afraid of you...rage on asshole...

Defending Your Life

//what we all have in common is our regard for Sam’s insight and sense of humor//

we have much more i common...
we despise sweat shops
we despise the brutality that occurs in the congo
the rape of the planet
(etc)

but i have many personal problems with the blog
they're mostly of an aesthetic nature
and it is pathological
so it's essentially my problem
and i could harp on about it, as i used too
but i cram it

and i feel crank should cram his own pathological distaste of nora's posts
whom many here enjoy

i'm not defending nora's posts
i'm defending nora

she is one of the sweetest good-natured people i've ever known
and to have crank maul her will not be tolerated

Only cowards erase their posts

CeeCee, I agree and I also suggested that in the past.

But one has to wonder, can even that work?

Is it worth the effort discussing even the time of day with bullying cowards who do childish stuff like erasing their posts?

[To the Eraser: It was too incriminating to leave lying around, huh? Do REAL "men" scurry back up the thread and erase their posts in order to make challeges look pointless?
You must have been sooooo scared.]

:)

:(

the effect that nora's posts has on crank

forgive them, father
for they know not what they do
except for nora...
smite her

re: Only cowards erase their posts

i take umbrage with the truthiness of that post

i don't know which post nora is referring to...
is it nando's?

now if it is, and nando decided that on second thoughts
it was a little on the inflammatory side
that's fair enough
there's no cowardice in that
in fact, it's quite noble

i've been requested to remove some of my posts
i've also deleted some, of my own accord

yes bumpers of all cars on the road should have a common alignment. You couldn't have bumper cars, remember the amusement park with the metal floor and the pole that went to the metal roof to complete the circuit, unless the bumpers lined up.

Wasn't there some guy from Calif. that advocated that years ago.

abusive, yes...
like i said, it's more of an allergic reaction

I tried to plead with him about it too...but he is not having any...he just does not give a shit.

The trouble, also is, ono, he does it to a lot of different people, not just nora...he has a list of people he believes are inferior and therefore justify reception of his abuse.

Since I have been on the blog, he has always targeted at least one person like this...the targets vary, but it is always someone receiving his abuse, and always for different reasons...and mostly all female...which is another one of my triggers...but not for the reasons he thinks...I've definitely got my own personal shit going on here too...

and its not like it happens only occasionally, it happens every single day lately. my guess is, if we let it run, it will continue to happen, until he eventually gets around to everyone, and ends up alone. Which is not an uncommon pathology with narcissists. He just cant help it.

The DN! thing yesterday was about

stress FROM HOLDING YOU LEGITIMATE FEELINGS OF RAGE INSIDE taking a toll on the body. Don't have time to post a link now. Can't be late for work. You all know where it is.

toniD I do apologize, but part of being part the solution is not being part of the problem. Crank and Fernando distract from the discussion of possible solutions with abuse to cover their own asses and stay in their own comfort zones. That is a BIG part of the problem HERE.

When somebody is in a bar-room brawl, I got no problem with him acting like it if that is what comes naturally and he is on the the right side. And the rest of you boys in that 3 on 1 fight barely even give the respect that is supposed to be behind political correctness a nod--ever.

cent is not the one who talks about putting tape over women's mouths or "drilling down to it."

Fernando, you can't justify some wars (for your convenience)and then say "good people don't shoot people." Make up your goddamn mind and stop acting crazy! It's not going to protect you anymore. It's not going to protect you from having your insults and threats recognized for what they are...

and, jesusono,

where'd you read that hell was pomo?

I defer to you, I guess. (YOU are way smarter than me. Got no problem recognizing THAT.)

But from what I hear, pomo having no hell is what some people think is part of its problem.

So now I am going to be late. Drat.

I can deal or ignore all said, including Crank B.'s words.

but I can... I am working on projects, so I do not have time for useless banter - although tempting... but I am glad there are "more" "SederFolks" that see thru his "frustrated rhetoric" and are speaking out...for Crank B is an adorable curmudgeon- to us Warriors of Truth. Besides "toxic-bitch'n" & toxic banter here, what else has he done? He is good "practice" for the Fangs. mwah haha ;)

Almost time for a M.G. Parade -- "B4 The Parade Passes By..." :):( ooxx

what's a "pomo"

and i'm not smarter than you
i'm just cooler than you

He is good "practice" for the Fangs

fucking-a, ms-a
: )

Oh yeah - Happy Fat Tuesday

Hello my love (air-ono)

LET THE DOOR KICK YOU IN THE ASS EVAN BAHY!

Not only is Bahy a member of the DLC, but he is the founder of the very conservative New Democrat Movement. If you read below, you will see that groups like this ,and the DLC, conspired to defeat Howard Dean.

-------------

New Democrat Movement

GROUP

The right wing current of the Democratic party, characterized by its neoliberal economic policies, support of Israel, desire to increase defense spending, and links to heavy donors and fundraisers.

Believes that "left-wing" positions are not politically viable. Describes itself as "moderate and pro-growth". Probably responsible for erosion of the Democratic Party's historical labor and minority base due to support of treaties like NAFTA, lack of support for affirmative action and poverty programs, and their siphoning away of campaign funds from minority groups.

At the national level, the movement was founded by the Democratic Leadership Council (501c4 educational non-profit, founded 1984) and includes the House New Democrat Coalition (founded 1997), the Senate New Democrat Coalition (founded 2000), the New Democrat Network PAC (founded 1996), the misnamed Progressive Policy Institute (501c4 think tank, "Bill Clinton's idea mill", founded 1989), and the umbrella funding group The Third Way Foundation (501c3 non-profit, founded 1996).

Since coming to power within the Democratic Party with Bill Clinton's presidency, the New Democrats/DLC have worked towards "essentially the same purpose as the Christian Coalition... to pull a broad political party dramatically to the right" according to John Nichols of The Progressive.

DLC operatives actively worked to sabotage Howard Dean's candidacy for the US Presidency in 2004, claiming that the "far-left" Democrat was wrong to attack George W. Bush's tax cuts and national security policies.

Corporate contributors to the DLC and New Democratic Network include Bank One, Citigroup, Dow Chemical, DuPont, General Electric, Health Insurance Corporation of America, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, Philip Morris, RJR Nabisco, Chevron, Prudential Foundation, Amoco Foundation, AT&T, Morgan Stanley, Occidental Petroleum, Raytheon, and many other Fortune 500 companies.

"[Democrats should] shift the primary focus from racism, the traditional enemy without, to self-defeating patterns of behavior [among blacks]" --Chuck Robb, 2nd DLC Chairman, Governor & Senator of the Great State of Virginia, White Man, 1986.

"I'm from the democratic wing of the Democrat Party" --Paul Wellstone, progressive Democrat, criticizing the New Democrat Movement.

"Democrats for the Leadership Class" --Jesse Jackson, progressive black Democrat, describing the DLC.

alls I'm saying msa is

violence does happen on the rhetorical and verbal level. it may not be as serious or damaging as actual physical violence all other things being equal.

then again, no things are ever all equal.

if I got punched in the mouth once in my adult/adolescent life, or even ten times, with no serious/permanent physical damage resulting I'd probably still be better off than somebody who got repeatedly verbally insulted in their home during their formative years.

what goes to the "battle" b4 Yule is this. i appreciated what you said about different people's dna and compromise and how everybody still has a moral responsibility to come correct and at least believe/support the "right" thing(s) even when it's not convenient.

all the rest of us ask of you (i.e, you-all, which includes the "you" that you have portrayed here) is that you don't talk about not talking but instead doing. if you are going to do, go do. don't talk about doing and not talking to delegitimate other people's concerns.

and either appreciate/acknowledge diversity or don't.

there's going to have to be some kind of barter arrangement

worked out between you and me then, mr. infringement officer sir.

which is gonna hurt you more than it does me.

I suppose I could pay you in beads. And you wouldn't even have to show me nuthin. Curses.

btw, bbk : P is based on a concept stolen from a/o, so I already owe you royalties.

Oy! You may as well be Citi.

I think Glory & Me & Cent & Crank Bait

are all a certain sign & we "take sides" {kinda hahaha} (unless Crank B is the same as my "distant" husband's hahaha)
{yet we all have MANY signs & planets & stars within, so that & a "cup of coffee" will buy you a cup of coffee {or tea giggle}

BUT We are here in Sederville, so oneday we should get along... 4 we r brilliant {kinda} :D

World Focus

I have suggested that we pull back from our myopic view of the world and think globally.

I try to read everyone's posts or at least the links that they post. I am dissapointed that Tonid doesn't read Nora's posts. I think That some people need to take a rest and stop bombarding this open forum with useless local politics.

There is a game going here about who is more valid or on the money. I have posted what I thought was current and politically acceptable and gotten no response. Why don't we all change our nics and start fresh and prove our worth with a discussion based on a desire to be good citizens?
In the Mean times (lately the town seems awfully mean) I I give up on trying to be part of this circular firing squad . I will miss some of those that are coming from a vulnerable point of love and friendship.
I do know that when one is not flexible intellectually they get physical manifestations of that stiffness.
Now there is one less player and those that need to dominate can feel more powerful and give themselves a better grade on their imaginary score card.

Glory, I see what you mean EXCEPT I DID DO & NOW AM

ASKING ALL OF YOU TO "DO SOMETHING!" -- whether just E-PETITIONING...
WE ARE ALL NEEDED! I HAVE DECIDED TO DO & DID SINCE I WAS 13/14 ... BUT I SAID THAT HERE MANY TIMES B4.
TIME IS FLEETING ... THIS IS CODE 3 FOR THE EARTH ... this was said in the 60s/70s to the 80s so just say'n NO MORE TIME. NOW WHAT? I DID. YOUR TURN. Tag You're It!

I have TOOK over things, wrote many other things, lead MANY ISSUES in The 80s in LA ... B4 The Massive Kewl NET!!!!
One does not have to get as "physical" as I did and as was done to me! ... WE ARE ALL NEEDED - IN ALL WAYS ... To Save Our Planet & to be kind to other oneday planet visits...

Would you suggest everyone have plastic surgery in a "real world" political group when there are internecine conflicts?

I hear ya, but still.

Besides, the differences going on here are real AND political.

Don't leave. Don't get involved if you don't want to. Just post the kind of stuff you want to read. If enough people do that, you will all drown us, and them, out.

Creative political protest done right, by Allison Kilkenny

It’s difficult to grab the public’s attention during a political protest because most such gatherings are uninspired. Oftentimes, participants hoist cardboard signs. There may be a chant or two. Penned inside city-approved cages, citizens rarely slow their gait when passing such a non-spectacle.

Then, there are the times protesters use brilliant displays of creativity and passion– not just to make a point in that moment — but to take a stand for all time and become legends.

The End of Obama’s Vision of a Nuke Free World

By Scott Ritter

...
Fears about a phantom Iranian nuclear weapon would have dissipated, and with it the illogical U.S. insistence on ballistic missile defense initiatives that have fatally undermined the current round of U.S.-Russian arms control negotiations. Had the Obama administration remained consistent with its September 2009 decision to terminate the controversial Bush-era missile defense plan involving the stationing of interceptor missiles and radar systems in Poland and the Czech Republic, there would be a START treaty today. But the sleight-of-hand approach, in which one program was terminated only to be replaced by another, triggered concerns among Russian military leaders about the real policy objectives of the Obama administration.

The administration has demonstrated that, for all the noble intent and objectives in the arena of arms control and nonproliferation exhibited at its inception, it too is susceptible to the addiction to nuclear weapons that has plagued America since 1945. This addiction, which feeds the notion of the United States’ self-appointed status of global savior and policeman, prevents any policy formulation that is perceived to weaken or undermine America’s nuclear supremacy. At a time when the world needed American leadership in the field of disarmament and nonproliferation, it instead got nothing but a replay of past policy, wrapped in the paranoid delusions of a nation that is unable or unwilling to come to grips with reality. Genuine international security is derived not from any nation, even the United States, seeking to impose deterrence-based policies through nuclear supremacy. True security comes from a world free of nuclear weapons.

To secure America, a president must have the courage to dismantle what, in the past, has been proclaimed as the foundation of our survival, but in reality presents us with the seeds of our destruction—nuclear weapons. President Obama had articulated such a vision in his groundbreaking speech in Prague back in April 2009. Since that time the United States has embarked on arms control and nonproliferation policies that have not only failed to move America and the world further down the path of peace and security, but actually made matters worse.

Policies must be judged not by their intent but their results. In this, the Obama administration’s policies represent an abysmal failure. The administration seeks to place the blame for these failures elsewhere, on Iran, China, Russia and North Korea. But the root cause of such failure lies with the utter lack of courage and conviction on the part of Barack Obama. He claimed to possess a vision of a world free of nuclear weapons, only to succumb to the same hubris and avarice that afflicted past U.S. presidents when tempted by the world supremacy that nuclear weapons promise.

Scott Ritter

Didn't Ritter get popped (entrapped!) recently for soliciting a young girl?

Leah...

Yes. It's happened before (of course you probably know). Entrapment is a relative term. Still sad.

I wouldn't say "sad" if the girls were any younger. Or if we learned he was doing it in the place that it was going to get the girl stoned to death (or whatever).

And yes, he does certainly seem to know his shit in the relevant area.

how about this

we only post things on-thread-subject like all the other blogs

"Bye, Bye Baby" by Janis Jopli....-

I often feel ignored, that I have no impact etc. I know it is an illusion [ I forgot to check if my surf wave - roof collapse - nora as cia plant - post caught anything ] [there really is a nora.cia facebook page] [no it's not an illusion a tells me, I am ignored][well that was two years ago]

The medium is not set up for that kind of response to everything that catches ones thought. I do make an effort to respond when someone makes the effort to write original words. [taozen, nice post above]

An interesting observation is that I don't see nora asking for any help, or engaging in endless repartee. She just does what she does. [gender is hard to tell just from the words]

I could go on there is lots of interesting dynamics going on here, and everywhere.

China Dumps US Asset Backeds and Corporates

February 9th, 2010
By David Goldman

Dollar-denominated risk assets, including asset-backed securities and corporates, are no longer wanted at the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), nor at China’s large commercial banks. The Chinese government has ordered its reserve managers to divest itself of riskier securities and hold only Treasuries and US agency debt with an implicit or explicit government guarantee. This already has been communicated to American securities dealers, according to market participants with direct knowledge of the events.

http://blog.atimes.net/?p=1352

The thing is, I have read the coverage

and as far as I've seen, he never denies the charges--just points out their convenient timing.

That's my impression--something I noticed particularly while I was looking. I will of course now look for links and I will be happy to admit it if I am wrong.

It's a remarkable phenomenon, gloryoski, which may astonish you to learn, but what you consider "calling out" is predicated (wholly) upon your fervent perspectivalist belief that you're right.

Self-righteous justification, like yours, finds no better outlet than scolding. You prefer to label it "calling out". Makes you feel better about yourself, go for it.

It sounds like scolding to anyone else that don't happen to agree w/you. (Perhaps you've yet to consider the possibility that not everyone agrees w/you?)

Also, as long as we're on the subject, it may also astonish you to learn that cent uses homophobic terms such as "butt boy" (and don't forget the misogynistic terms of "abuse" he's also fond of when mad!) to describe Crank and Fernando. (B/c cent reverts, apparently, to junior high when he's angry and imbalanced.)

And you, gloryoski, deign not to notice, but rather scold, er, (excuse me) "call out" whomever it is you are calling out about "drilling down to it". By your rules, you see, I'ma calling you out, tho' I'm quite comfortable if you wish to call it scolding when someone else does it. It seems appropriate from you.

Look, I get that you heart cent. What'd be nice is if you'd be a little consistent. If you wanna scold, er, call out whomever the taping mouths person is, perhaps the least you could do is not use cent as the poster boy of yer "at least cent doesn't" antithesis.

cent, when mad, often resembles yer most scold-worthy remarks.

I guess you ain't noticed.

Also, for the record, not that you or anyone is axed or wants to know, but I personally think Crank has been rude to nora. Often. I don't pretend to know or unnerstand why nora sends him over the rainbow like she do. I also think, fwiw, that nora is wrong a lot. I mean a whole lot.

One don't justify the other, but then, by your rules, Crank is merely calling out nora, ain't he?

I thought this was really good

Cheney -- international criminal on the lose
Submitted by nora on Mon, 02/15/2010 - 10:57pm.

Yesterday I was puzzled by Bob Schieffer of Face The Nation spending so much time questioning current V.P. Biden about ex-president-of-vice Cheney's opinions/confessions(!) on torture and Cheney's charges against the Dem administration.

Why doesn't Cheney get grilled in that way.

re: cent

Trying not to be uncharitable here. Is you saying so long's cent uses misogynistic and homophobic slurs to insult *other people* (i.e. not you), you're fine w/it? Is that what you're saying? B/c you (pointedly) didn't address the issue apart from saying that cent does not say those slurs to you. (Yay you!) But he pointedly does say those slurs to other people. You gotta problem w/it w/other peoples but not w/cent b/c he don't direct his fire at you?

Do you see any inconsistency there? (Maybe you can call yerself out!)

Far's "my buddy" referenced above, I don't know who or what yer talking about. Will sez this: you are making assumptions about who "my buddy" is.

Just as you made assumptions about the supposed 3-on-1 "fight" (which is rather a juvenile way of looking at it, imo).

Look, I speak for myself. Crank speaks for himself. Fernando speaks for himself. You speak for yourself. And cent speaks for himself.

People disagree. We is all big boys and big girls (just not both at the same time) and we oughtta be accountable for our own statements w/o trying to implicate, say, gloryoski for, say, cent's language, unless you, gloryoski, after bein' extended the courtesy of having been axed (what I'ma doin' right now!) whether you endorse it or not.

Then you can feel free to league peoples together in yer little cliques you got establisht in yer mind.

I don't like that language.

It IS also important to me who is using it, to whom and why (or with what provocation).

That's a more nuanced way of looking at language one might "scold" about. (This is not a concept that originates with me. I am sure if you rack your brain you can think of some other examples.)

It's also more nuanced than stereotyping your enemies in a facile way.

It's also less disingenuous than bullshitting about who ones friends are and are not. (Although, of course, it's strategically "brilliant" to do so.)

I am still done now if you are done. There ARE more important things going on the world.

The Phylomon Project

Well 2010 is here, a.k.a. the International Year of Biodiversity, and to us at the SCQ, it means that we're finally ready to go ahead with our long awaited phylomon project. “What is this?” you ask? Well, it's an online initiative aimed at creating a Pokemon card type resource but with real creatures on display in full “character design” wonder. Not only that - but we plan to have the scientific community weigh in to determine the content on such cards (note that the cards above are only a mock-up of what that content might be), as well as folks who love gaming to try and design interesting ways to use the cards. Then to top it all off, members of the teacher community will participate to see whether these cards have educational merit. Best of all, the hope is that this will all occur in a non-commercial-open-access-open-source-because-basically-this-is-good-for-you-your-children-and-your-planet sort of way.

Why are we doing this?

Well, it was conservationist Andrew Balmford's letter (Why Conservationists Should Heed Pokemon, Science. 2002 Mar 29;295(5564):2367.), published in Science, that provided the proverbial kick in the pants. Essentially, he did this eye opening study to show that children as young as eight had the remarkable ability to identify and characterize upwards of 120 different Pokemon characters. However, when the same rubric was applied using photos of “real” flora and fauna (animals and plants that lived in the children's back yards) the results were simply horrendous.

re: "my buddy"

Can you cut the bullshit? For just a moment? Is that possible?

I'm not a mind-reader and I don't know who you are claiming "my buddy" is. I also don't know the nature of the "taping" or "drill down" charges (nor its blessed "nuance", if any).

I could, if I were of your apparent ilk, gloryoski, *assume* you meant either Crank or Fernando, tho' I still couldn't be sure who it was you meant.

It'd be greatly appreciated if you could find it in yer heart to do that.

Good Morning

Man, Fernando, that looks fucking delicious. Me wantee!

This blog is fun. It's why I come. This recent kerfluffle is, frankly, hilarious. The animosity makes it even more comical.

Did all this really start over a nora post? Or, did it start over a Crank Bait reaction to a nora post? Does it matter?

No.

Is far as I'm concerned, those occurrences are like battles between immortals: so established, timeless and irreconcilable, so as to be beyond my ability to process as a mere human meatsack.

When I'm on my deathbed Crank and nora will be somewhere up in the ether making thunder and lightning, causing earthquakes and floods and scattering the tiny villagers every now and then in the turmoil.

So it is written. In the unwritten blog rules.

We can only chronicle such wonders, we can never affect them.

Now yer cookin'. Thank you.

Won't disavow that I like Crank. I do. I think he's funny and intelligent and as much as a person can know another w/o never meetin', I expect he's prolly a purty good shit.

Now, that said, I will repeat:

I think Crank's been rude to nora. Can say it w/o qualification. Don't know why nora sends him over the deep end but she do.

Again, I will repeat: The fact that nora is annoyingly wrong and/or talking about things she hasn't the first clue about don't make Crank's rudeness right, and it ain't a justification.

But will also sez: I ain't the one to scold or call out here, b/c, based on yer rules, glory, Crank definitely is calling out nora. That's what he's doin'. In the process, he has, at times, devolved into rudeness.

What I don't get about the rudeness (i.e. labels like "moron", etc.) by Crank is it don't appear to be inspired by any reciprocity from nora. She just kinda flits about and does her thing. Personally, I ignore her posts. Some people find my bullshit folksy writin' style annoying. I get it. I find her EMPHATIC shouting off-putting, but that's my problem.

Now there are peoples who can get under yer skin if you let them, but what surprises me in the Crank case (ha-ha, pun, oh, never mind) is, unless I is missed it, which is entirely possible, I ain't aware of any barbs comin' from nora that would inspire the rudeness.

So that's what I gots to sez on that.

re: the "taping" and "drilling down" bit

Hope you'll forgive me, but I ain't exactly disposed to take yer word for things. It's possible you have mischaracterized things (either inadvertently or b/c blinded by dislike for Crank), it's possible the bits were said in jokes and you are being humorless b/c you dislike Crank. It's possible, but unlikely, imo, that Crank said something truly misogynistic w/malice in his heart.

Now, you can axe yerself at this point, gloryoski -- if you care to exercise some fairness inna similar parallel -- does cent have malice in his heart b/c he uses misogynistic and homophobic slurs in his epithets? (But against people you don't like!)

fwiw, no, I don't think cent is either misogynistic or homophobic just b/c cent uses the slurs he does when he's mad. I suspect cent is just yer garden-variety unreconstructed epithet-hurler who posts before he thinks when he's spitting mad.

These slurs is the kinda thing many of us learn when yer an impressionable kid and spend the rest of yer life unlearning, but they slips when a person w/poor impulse-control (go Janeane!) is vulnerable (like, say, when yer inna blind rage!)

Now that's the most charitable, and imo, accurate estimation for why cent uses the slurs he does when he does.

So.

If you wanna go to the trouble of actually dredging up what Crank wrote, I will give you my impression w/o restraint and let you know whether I think you are being fair or not (as will everyone else, so I think it'sa valuable exercise).

If you don't, then don't. But as for me, given what I've seen of yer performance on this blog, you can calls me *purty* skeptical of the charge till proven.

(And you might review yer bit on "nuanced". It might prove useful should you elect to undertake the assignment. Unless of course "nuance" only works when you use it.)

On you, now.

Senate Quartet Urges Reid To Pass Public Plan Via Reconciliation

Four senators have signed a letter urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to pass a public option for insurance coverage through the use of reconciliation.

The list of signatories includes both usual and somewhat unusual suspects, from the progressive wing of the party -- Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) -- to less ideological lawmakers who find themselves in primary election contests -- Sens. Michael Bennet (D-Col.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).

"Dear Leader Reid," the letter says:

We respectfully ask that you bring for a vote before the full Senate a public health insurance option under budget reconciliation rules.

There are four fundamental reasons why we support this approach - its potential for billions of dollars in cost savings; the growing need to increase competition and lower costs for the consumer; the history of using reconciliation for significant pieces of health care legislation; and the continued public support for a public option.

The petition is part of a larger effort by a coalition of progressive groups to rally Democratic lawmakers around the idea of passing a government run health insurance option through a parliamentary maneuver that would allow an up-or-down vote.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America and Credo -- a socially-conscious business -- have already secured the signatures of 119 House Democratic lawmakers for the late-stage public option push. The progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org also has emailed constituents asking them to push their representatives to co-sign the petition.

The effort is an uphill one. There is little reported willingness among Democratic leadership to reenter the public option battle. And while using reconciliation would allow the policy to be made law by majority vote, there is an open debate as to how strong of a public plan can be passed this way.
Story continues below

"Senator Reid remains a strong supporter of the public option, but it's always a question of where the votes are," said Reid spokesman Jim Manley in a statement to HuffPost.

The popularity of the idea, nevertheless, remains relatively high. As the letter to Reid notes, the most recent CBS/New York Times poll shows that the public option is supported by 59 percent of respondents and opposed by just 29 percent.

Former Liberian dictator, on

Former Liberian dictator, on trial for war crimes, implicates U.S. con man Pat Robertson.

As reported by Foreign Policy, former Liberian dictator Charles Taylor has implicated U.S. con man Pat Robertson as being complicit in war crimes carried out by Taylor.

Former Liberian President Charles Taylor, testifying in his own war crimes trial today, said that the American conservative evangelist Pat Robertson was awarded a Liberian gold-mining concession in 1999 and subsequently offered to lobby the Bush administration to support his government.

The revelations came in the midst of a U.N.-backed trial of Taylor at The Hague on 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity during Sierra Leone’s 1990s civil war. Taylor is accused of directing a Sierra Leone rebel group, the United Revolutionary Front (RUF), in a campaign aimed at securing access to the country’s diamond mines. The rebel movement stands accused of committing mass atrocities in the late 1990s in the West African country, including the mutilation of thousands of civilians.

The international prosecutors contend that Taylor offered concessions to Western individuals in exchange for lobbying work aimed at enhancing his image in the United States. The prosecution maintains that Taylor also spent $2.6 million on lobbying firms and public relations outfits in the hopes of influencing the policies of former President Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. more...

How the drug lobby snared Obama

Big Pharma's firing of Billy Tauzin hardly seems fair, after all the damage he did to Obama and healthcare reform

By Joe Conason

Billy Tauzin, Washington's epitome of the legislator-turned-lobbyist, resigned from his job as PhRMA’s chief hustler this week. According to the New York Times, Tauzin surrendered his lavish expense account and $2 million salary because his bosses in the pharmaceutical industry believed he had somehow failed to safeguard their interests sufficiently while killing real healthcare reform. So he has gone off to pursue other interests, as they always say, but let us note that his firing reeks of ingratitude. Not only did Tauzin protect the industry from hundreds of billions of dollars in potential cost savings for consumers and taxpayers, but he managed to draw the Obama White House (meaning chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and his deputy Jim Messina) into a deal that discredited the reform effort -- and damaged the president's own reputation.

Have a stop on the way. A man I worked with died of cancer and I'm stopping at the funeral home. Wonderful man. Great to work with. He was 77.

Try to have a great afternoon.
